Oh man this movie had everything I wanted.  It is crazy that two movies technically in the same genre (Heat and The Sting) could be in the same genre, have such different feelings but I could enjoy both. I was having so much fun in this one!

[Full Reaction] The Sting (1973)

Comments

Jane Harker

"The Color of Money", with Paul Newman and Tom Cruise should be next. More con men, pool hustlers, great movie.

Korny

Love this reaction! What I think about during this movie is Cool Hand Luke. It’s not scary, not romantic but super interesting.

bgb1975 (Brian)

The first time I saw this, my dad needed to explain horse racing to me - mainly the difference between a horse win (coming in 1st)/place (coming in 2nd)/and show (coming in 3rd). I had no idea.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

The legends joined forces once again on the big screen: Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Two master classes of charisma and talent. Glad you checked this one out, Cassie. Looking forward to your reaction. Cheers!

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

BTW, Robert Redford + Brad Pitt = Spy Game (2001). Highly recommended. Top Gun director, Tony Scott, helmed this picture. You'll enjoy it.

Darren Hill

How did he switch four 3s for fourJacks ? Most likely had them tucked somewhere inside his waistcoat. He was holding his cards very close to his chest. Also did you recognise Robert Shaw as Doyle Lonergan. He played Quint in JAWS.....loved your reaction Cassie. Would love to see you react to Robert Redford in THE NATURAL during this years World Series.

Alex Villarreal

Aw, well now Cassie has to watch Robert Redford and Paul Newman in BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. I don't make the rules. It must be done now. 🙂

tiny baby kitty man

Here's hoping this leads you down the Redford rabbit hole down to one of the greatest heist movies of all time: Sneakers.

Matthew Dunham

A truly excellent movie with two of the greatest actors to ever live.

Stick Figure Studios

"Have I seen anything with Robert Redford in it?" Well, you've seen CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER. He was in that. Also, if you've seen the new PETE'S DRAGON, he was in that too.

Prof. Writhms

The old man (Luther) that grifted with Johnny looked very familiar so I looked him up. He's Robert Earl Jones (James Earl Jones' father). His career was pretty long, mostly on stage, from 1945 to 1990. He actually worked with playwright Langston Hughes at some point. Now I see where James Earl Jones got his talent. 🙂

Future Boy

This is a perfect time to mention the film "Sneakers" (1992). It's another "heist" flavoured story, with a great cast (including Robert Redford again), a great fun story, some comedy, and a little romance. It's unknown to most people, but it's a little gem. It's got "Cassie" written all over it!

Shawn Kildal

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) is another great Newman and Redford pairing! One of my favorite movies of all time

Christian Yoder

In addition to the other suggestions, I would suggest you take a look at Paul Newman (Gondorf in this movie) when he was young in Cool Hand Luke.

Luis

Hope The Hustler is coming in the future. It's a good sports film and features one of the great movie nicknames in Minnesota Fats.

Michael Barootian

Spy Games…Robert Redford AND Brad Pitt!!! 😁

Michael Barootian

Also did you notice that Lonnegan was Quint from Jaws 😆

B.H. Hosford

I absolutely love The Sting! Back in the day I wore out a VHS copy I'd taped off cable. I'm in the process of moving but once I dust off my copy I'm looking forward to rewatching this with your reaction.

M4V3R1CK

The Color of Money Paul Newman teaching Tom Cruise to hustle pool

Ben Livingstone

You definitely need to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, too.

Stick Figure Studios

If you are in the mood for another terrific con movie, I recommend the one that I sent you the DVD for: DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS with Michael Caine and Steve Martin. It's smart, it's funny and it is full of surprises. Check it out. :-)

Whose limp wasn't an affectation. He was injured right before filming but they decided to use it. Somehow it actually makes him more menacing.

Stick Figure Studios

This movie is a delight from start to finish. The phenomenal cast, the smart script that surprises you but doesn't "cheat," the jaunty ragtime music, the painted chapter breaks... It's all top shelf. You can see why it won best picture. The only joy greater than watching this film for the first time is watching someone else watch it for the first time. Knew you'd love it. Next up for a Robert Redford reaction: THE NATURAL perhaps?

Matthew Dunham

Both wonderful movies she'll love in my opinion.

Johnny

Cassie would love The Natural for sure.

Brian Harris

Redford was a great star, but Paul Newman (Gondorff) was the GREATEST star. Ruled Hollywood for just about 50 years. Insane movie star charisma, and one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Verdict, Nobody’s Fool. Nobody played the charming rogue with a dark past like he did. An irreplaceable figure, now very much missed after a long and remarkable life. One great con man movie people don’t talk about much is Leap of Faith, starring Steve Martin. And it’s a Cassie Classic™️ if I’ve ever seen one, you’ll love it.

Darren Hill

Cassie....Newman and Redford loved to practical joke each other. Paul Newman often commented on wanting a Porsche. One morning he woke up and there was one in his driveway with a big red bow around it. Only problem was that it was a complete wreck. He suspected who was responsible so he got it towed to a scrap metal yard. Had it crushed down to the size of a tea chest. Then had it quietly placed in Redford's garage overnight.

Kat Farlowe

Next up, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid of course. The first pairing of Redford and Newman and it is fantastic!

Kat Farlowe

I agree! My mother LOVED Paul Newman. She had a huge poster of him in black and white with his blue eyes as the only color. This was living room art! Do you know that he was the founder of Newman's Own products where 100% of the proceeds go to charity? Specifically at the start to his "Hole in the Wall Gang" camp for seriously ill children in Connecticut. A great philanthropist as well as an incredible actor. Watch "The Verdict" to see him really shine.

Grinznmore

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is so fun.

nick bell

One of my alltime favorites. Saw this so many times growing up

Grinznmore

It was a gut punch when we lost Paul. A class act. A faithful husband, top-shelf actor and philanthropist. I thought of him while watching Ford vs Ferrari, he was passionate about car racing and an accomplished driver. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. RIP

3dbadboy1

And now you know why it got the Best Picture Oscar for 1973 (1974?).

William Russell

Fantastic reaction Cassie - one of your very best. Knew this would be right up your street, As per many others Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Cool Hand Luke would make natural and fantastic follow ups.

3dbadboy1

Watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with BOTH Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Also on a sentimental note, watch The Natural (the regular version) with Robert Redford as Roy Hobbs, quite the feelgood movie.

Grinznmore

1974. FYI "Dick" is slang for Detective. Not the current usage for jerk.

Jake McNulty

While we're recommending Robert Redford films, I think it's also worth mentioning that he's also directed some films worth watching. 'Ordinary People' and 'Quiz Show' are my personal favourites, but I also suspect that Cassie would certainly enjoy 'A River Runs Through It' and 'The Horse Whisperer'.

Jason Dolan

Cassie realizing Machine Gun Kelly is NOT an original name for Megan Fox's boyfriend, lol

Tobias Eiken

One of my favourite movies of all time. The way you think you're in on the sting, and in the end it turns out you're not... Brilliant. As many others say Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a must. As is Cool Hand Luke. And A River Runs Through It with both Robert Redford and Brad Pitt should be right up your alley. Beautiful movie.

Steven Ashford

Thomas Crown Affair Cassie! I know it did well on the poll but didn’t make it. You will flip your lid at the end. Got to see it.

Darren Hill
>>84295126

THE NATURAL is such an inspiring film. It certainly ticks all the boxes for Cassie. The cast is a who's who of Hollywood legends. It's a work of art. Won Oscars for best cinematography, original music score and best supporting actress. It has you hooked in the first 5 minutes. I reckon she would enjoy it just as much as Rocky, if not more

Vishnu

If you like this you might like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid like the other people have mentioned. It's just a little bit sadder though

Doug R

For Redford films I am partial to All the Presidents Men

Tara

Okay... I’m sorry, but I just have to say it. Paul Newman’s blue eyes... swoon... 😍 Like others have mentioned, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a great one with both Newman and Redford. Cassie, you may not be familiar with Paul Newman, but he was a very famous actor in his day. He was nominated 10 times for the Academy Award. He was nominated for playing Fast Eddie Felton in The Hustler (1961) and was nominated again for the same character in The Color Of Money (1986) with Tom Cruise. So I guess you’ll have the see The Hustler first... I would love to watch The Natural with you. It’s baseball and Robert Redford. You may have heard about The Sundance Film Festival. Redford established the institute for young filmmakers to share their work and the annual festival has become very influential. Both actors heavy into philanthropy with Newman giving close to $175 million to charity. You have seen Redford before in Captain America Winter Soldier as an older man who is basically Nick Fury’s boss and he was also in Avengers Endgame when they go back in time.

Jason Dolan

Can't wait for Cassie to react to BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID Other Paul Newman I am anticipating her watching include: THE HUSTLER THE COLOR OF MONEY COOL HAND LUKE NOBODY'S FOOL THE VERDICT Other Robert Redford: ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN OUT OF AFRICA THE NATURAL SPY GAME THE CANDIDATE

Tara

Cassie, I mentioned this before, but you really seem to like these type of “con” movies similar to this and the Oceans movies where there is a bad guy and a team trying to take them down using a con. You will really like the TV show Leverage. I thought of it during this movie when the guys pretended to be painters and conned a guy out of his office so they could use it as part of their con. The show does a lot of that stuff and similar to this movie, you don’t always know how it will work out in the end which is always fun as the viewer. Please watch the first couple of episodes, even post them if you’d like. I really think you’ll enjoy it. It’s right up this alley. 🍿

Mingo Wayama

My earliest recollection of Robert Redford was in Barefoot in the Park,.on Broadway in 1963, opposite Elizabeth Ashley . He reprised the role opposite Jane Fonda, in the movie with the same title in 1967. It's a pure rom-com, so perhaps you've already seen it.

Michael Threapleton
>>84288315

I'd tweak that to: One of the greatest actors to ever live, Robert Shaw. He did menace so well. Remember him as the Spectre assassin in the Bond movie From Russia with Love.

Grinznmore

Trivia. The scene where Hooker goes to the burlesque show to meet the exotic dancer, the standup comedian was correctly identified in the scene. He's Leonard Barr, Dean Martin's uncle on his mother's side. Barr was a fixture during the '70s (Love American Style, Little House on the Prarie, Odd Couple, and Late Night). His comedic style was similar to Rodney Dangerfield and Henny Youngman. Fast delivered one-liners.

Michael Threapleton

A lot of good suggestions for other Newman and Redford films. I'd add the following for Paul Newman: A brace of cold war thriller/mysteries The Prize (1963) in which Newman is the Nobel prize winner for literature and goes to Stockholm for the ceremony. While there he begins to suspect that the physics prize winner has been replaced with an imposter. It gets really good from there. Torn Curtain (1966) in which Newman is a world leading mathematician who decides to defect to the Soviets. His wife (a surprisingly good Julie Andrews) reluctantly decides to go with him. It's Hitchcock so some brilliance ensues. A brace of gritty '60s westerns in which it became clear that Newman is not just a pretty face but a talented actor: Hud (1963) is a modern 'western' drama addressing family conflicts and rivalries. Hombre (1967) is a western that confronts discrimination and bigotry and what it means to be a 'hero'.

MikeLL
>>84311557

I was also going to mention that scene because Cassie said she didn't know it was that risque in the 30's. Burlesque is a form of adult entertainment that just doesn't exist anymore. In the opening scene of the busy office and she asked if it was a bank, it was the mob's numbers racket - an illegal lottery. The horse races were accomplished by getting the same teletype information sent to bookies, and they just delayed the info for a few minutes and gave simulated horse races to cover. Was very entertaining to see this movie work its wiles with Cassie, especially making her think the fake FBI agents were real. Its great to see Cassie really enjoy a fun movie. My rec for a con man film would be The Flim Flam Man (1967) about a small time con man, a movie that has the same tone as The Sting, it s mostly comedy and features an old time grifter brilliantly played by George C. Scott.

Kathy Ice

Most of the music in this movie was originally written by Scott Joplin, a Black composer from the early 1900s. The arrangements of Joplin's music were done by Marvin Hamlisch. The style of music is called "Ragtime," and ragtime music enjoyed a brief surge in popularity in the mid-1970s because of this movie.

Michael Threapleton

If you like the world of con games, consider the early Mamet oeuvre House of Games (1987). Smooth-talking grifter Joe Mantegna leads psychiatrist Lindsay Crouse into the dark world of stings, scams, and con men. It's a great introduction to the iambic pentameter of Mamet dialogue---an acquired taste, like scotch, but once you get it, wow. In the same genre, a Mamet follow up is The Spanish Prisoner (1997). Steve Martin, in a non-comedic role, is surprisingly menacing. Once again, the unique Mamet dialogue style is delicious.

Christian Yoder
>>84312566

And just to add to that, Ragtime is actually out of place in this movie. Ragtime was popular from about 1900 to 1920. By the 30's the popular music was big band jazz (Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.). This isn't a criticism of the movie, though, because somehow the ragtime music just feels right with the story and style of the movie. It really was an inspired choice by Hamlisch, in my opinion.

Celeste McAllister

I was told The Sting was a best picture winner that really did deserve to win..what a cool movie and like Redford was such a good looking 70's heartthrob! Paul Newman and those bluer than blue eyes like yeeow! ...STILL WAITING ON JEREMIAH JOHNSON CASSIE! 😎💙

Mark Harrell

You would totally LOVE Butch CASSIDY and the Sundance Kid with Redford and Newman from 1968., based on true story , bank and train robbers but you just root for them no blood and gore just great fun movie as good as the Sting

Mark Harrell

The theme song The Entertainer was actually written in 1902 and because of the movie reached #3 in the country for a while in 1973

Stick Figure Studios

I love your observation about the similarities between Robert Shaw and Sean Connery. Coincidentally, those two actors engaged in a tense but thrilling duel on a train in the Bond movie FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. It was one of the best fist fights ever put on film.

Popcorn In Bed
>>84293314

wow, amazing, that gave me goosebumps just to read! i love that salad dressing haha! also dying at the living room art ❤️❤️

Popcorn In Bed
>>84305642

thank you Tara! yes, i actually live an hour away from Sundance film festival, i have been a few times, never to see any movies though, just to look for celebrities 🙈 i’m so interested in watching his other movies now

Michael Threapleton

Another Redford suggestion, The Hot Rock (1972). It's a heist movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. The tension when Redford utters the line "Afghanistan banana stand" is palpable. At the end of that sequence he portrays his emotions so well with body language, your face will hurt from smiling so widely.

Ian Cano

Watching this movie reminded me of eating at a Farrell's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlour.

Matthew Dunham

Robert Redford in the "Three Days of the Condor" is a underrated classic! "Butch and Sundance" "The Natural" Robert Shaw, "Jaws", "The Battle of the Bulge", "From Russia with Love" (James Bond)

JayF

I've suggested this one to all of my reactors and you're the only one that's done it so far. I knew you'd fall for both Redford and Newman. ;) I think you'll get to The Natural as it's a baseball film so my next pick for a Redford film for you would be Sneakers. For Paul Newman it would be Cool Hand Luke. Oh and you missed another actor you should know in The Sting. I'm not going to tell you where you saw Robert Shaw (Lonnegan) before but let's just say he loves swimmin' with bow legged women.

Stick Figure Studios

It's been a while since I last watched this film, so I forgot how much of it Redford spends just flat-out running. In addition to the Brad Pitt of his day maybe he was also the Tom Cruise

nick bell

If you like this "get the gang together and pull a scam " type of movie, you'll enjoy LOGAN LUCKY.

Michael Lynch

I thought for sure you were going to call Paul Newman (Gondorff) Gandalf. There's a lot of movies I'm sure other people are mentioning with Robert Redford but you can knock out two and one movie. A great baseball movie with Robert Redford called the natural.

Johnny
>>84290254

It's not a "movie nickname" - Minnesota Fats, played by Jackie Gleason, is actually a famous real life pool player.

Philip Alan

Cassie... you HAVE to WATCH "THE GAME" with Michael Douglas! ("Con" movie at its finest) I really enjoyed this reaction!

Philip Alan
>>84290875

I was waiting for her to recognize him, but wow does Shaw know how to bury himself in a character!

David Patterson

I haven't seen 'Three Days of the Condor' mentioned. Another great Redford pic. Also, another clever heist/con movie is 'Quick Change' with Bill Murray, Geena Davis, and Randy Quaid.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

I'm sorry but I found this practically unwatchable. If I pretended I was watching a stage play in the theatre, I found the movie tolerable at the start... but that didn't last very long :( *ducks incoming, thrown shoes*

zynjams

Paul Newman movies are great also , silent movie please ,cool hand luke, the Hustler , Cat on a hot tin roof

Scott Lindsey

If you like Paul Newman and Robert Redford together you should DEFINITELY watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.

Reece Coventree

I'm so glad you liked this movie! I knew the ending would get you. If you watched the marvel movies, you have seen Robert Redford. He was Secretary Pierce. He and Paul Newman were the Brad Pitt/George Clooney back in the day. There is a comedy heist called Quick Change that you might like.

peter spartz

Redford and Newman first co-starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The best Western Ever

Dave Hill

Wow, what an awesome movie! Had never seen it before and am so glad that it was a poll winner. Sortof reminded me of Maverick and the multiple cons that were going on all the way up to the very end! Usually I don't watch the credits, but I'm so glad I did as I noticed in the beginning that Luther looked very much like James Earl Jones, but just didn't have the amazing voice and was already too old looking for the time this movie was made. When I saw the actor that played Luther was listed as Robert Earl Jones it all made sense. Never knew he had a father that also acted and looked so much like him. What an extra treat to learn something cool like that in addition to a great movie! EDIT: Had to throw in a few suggestions of other heist style movies that I feel are really great: Hell or High Water (western themed too!), The Bank Job, Logan Lucky. All with great actors too. Cassie - You should watch the trailers for each. =)

Jamie van Brewen

OMG! OMG! OMG! ❤️❤️❤️ I haven't even watched your reaction yet and I'm giddy! I love this movie SO MUCH! Thank you! I know I'll love your reaction! ❤️

The Guy on the Couch
>>84335008

I 1st watched this in the late 1980's with my grandpa; it was one of his and is as well one of my favorite movies and I never made the connection to this being James Earl Jones' father and now knowing I wonder how I never saw it. thank you for this trivia, good sir :)

The Guy on the Couch

This was great reaction as usual Cass. This has been a favorite of mine since childhood and seeing others enjoy that moment at the end when you watch it the 1st time and the twist always gets people. I literally yelled "Why did you make me watch this stupid movie!?!?!" at my Grandpa when I thought Robert Redford got killed. He just smiled. And you seemed to enjoy the music and all the songs were from the composer Scott Joplin, a black composer known as "The King of Ragtime" which is the style of music he plays and made famous. I'm pretty sure everyone in America has heard the main theme of the movie, the entertainer, as a lot of ice cream carts that roam US city neighborhoods in summer will play that song. And at the end, the usual "Cassie forgets character names" during the end of movie discussion when its comes to Doyle Lonnegan was extra hilarious, ya follow ;) Thank you for this reaction; every time I watch it I remember fond memories my spending with my grandpa. Again thank you and I am glad you enjoyed it too :)

JarHead0351

I loved watching you thru this great movie with your shocked look as the sting was happening - Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid is another great movie starring both Robert Redford & Paul Newman western - You compare Robert Redford as the old time Brad Pitt, they both in a great spy movie together called Spy Games - good heist movie is Now You see Me

Tyler Foster

Trying to remember and answer some of Cassie's questions: Lonnegan runs the "rackets" in the city, which is classic gangster extortion. Someone goes around to all the local businesses and forces them to pay for "protection," which is essentially protection from the same mob bullying them into paying. A similar principle goes for Snyder. Since all of the people he interacts with criminals and he's a cop, if he extorts them for money to keep his mouth shut or let them go, they have no one to complain to. "I can probably only get two, three hundred guys." Gondorff is sarcastically saying he'll have no shortage of other con men volunteering for the job because they all loved Luther and want to get Lonnegan for killing him. You were correct about the man who furnishes the fake betting parlor. The option he doesn't take is a percentage of the score, which of course he'll only receive if they successfully con Lonnegan. The guy says he'd prefer to be paid in advance. When Hooker explains the scam to Lonnegan, he basically tells him the truth. The con man J.J. in the back has a machine that is printing out the real race results, and then he reads them as if the races haven't happened yet, so that when Lonnegan looks in the newspaper, the correct horses will be winning the races. Lonnegan thinks they're scamming it off of Western Union, but they're just fudging the results by about 10-20 minutes. I agree with everyone above who said Sneakers is another great Robert Redford movie, and echo the love for the previous team-up of Redford and Newman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I also saw one other person mention The Hot Rock, which is another heist/con movie, and the script was written by the same legendary screenwriter, William Goldman. In addition to Butch Cassidy and The Hot Rock, he wrote the screenplays for Misery and All the President's Men (with Redford), which I don't think you've seen, and The Princess Bride and Maverick. I also agree with everyone who mentioned The Hustler as a great Paul Newman drama, and The Hudsucker Proxy, which is one of my favorite comedies. Hudsucker Proxy features Charles Durning in a small role, who played Snyder in this.

Alex Villarreal

Given Cassie's love of Disney, she's likely run across Paul Newman before (or at least his voice) in Pixar's CARS as Doc Hudson, his last role.

Les Bird
>>84296578

Quiz Show is one of my favourite flicks. I also really think she'd like it. It's a little bit of a heist pic isn't it...? Redford, like Eastwood, became a really great director pretty early in his career. In that way, Ben Affleck has become the modern Redford, not Pitt (although he produces), with his directing.

Les Bird
>>84301311

Butch, written by the greatest of all time, William Goldman, is a classic. Can't believe it hasn't come to the top of a poll yet.

Jake McNulty

It occurred to me what might be another great Depression-era "con-man" film that Cassie might enjoy. "Paper Moon".

Mark M

Henry 'the steward of' Gondorf

Anthony Perez

Not sure if Cassie noticed but the actor who played Luther Coleman, the conman who gets killed in beginning of movie, is James Earl Jones father. James Earl Jones was the voice of Dearth Vader in Star Wars. If you listen to Coleman talk at table with Redford you can hear the same voice.

Anthony Perez

Also ...the actor who played Lonnegan, Robert Shaw, played Quint in JAWS. Very intense stare.

Alan Kobb

I had fun! I really enjoyed the music and I enjoyed watching Cassie being a sucker for a pretty face! I always love watching Robert Shaw. He's a great older actor who, unfortunately died too young. If you recall, Cassie, he was the captain of the boat in Jaws.

Michael Simpson

A good Redford movie I haven't seen mentioned is Three Days of the Condor, with Redford and Kathleen Dunaway. Spies and intrigue.

Ron

Here's a few I'd like to recommend starring the leading men in The Sting: Robert Redford * Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) * Sneakers (1992) * All the President's Men * Three Days of the Condor Redford Save for Valentine's: * The Electric Horseman (1979) * Barefoot in the Park (1967) -> both co-starring Jane Fonda. Paul Newman * The Hustler (1961) * The Color of Money (1986) * The Verdict (1982) * Absence of Malice (1981)

Grinznmore

I think I'm going to rewatch Redford in The Great Waldo Pepper. I watched it years ago. I see the ratings are so so but I remember it fondly. The flying alone is worth the price of admission—props to the great stunt pilot Frank Tallman. Sadly we lost Frank on 15 Apr 1978, doing what he loved, flying.

Grinznmore

If you enjoyed this genre of music, may I recommend the album Branch to Branch, Leon Redbone? Warning ⚠️ It will camp out in your upstairs closet for a while.

Phillip Ribbink

I'm gonna explain the whole Carousel/Brothel situation, since it seemed to catch Cassie's attention and thus kind of caught mine. I was kind of always under the impression that the Carousel was an added source of income for the brothel that Henry's girlfriend runs. Brothels usually operate at night, so they usually aren't generating income during the day. My guess is the Carousel was a way to bring in some extra money during daylight hours. Back in the day a Carousel would be a pretty big attraction. Remember this is before the really crazy rides we see at amusement parks today. A Carousel would be the closest you would get to that thrill in the 30s. They were enjoyed by children and adults alike. Which is why when the brothel has a slow night towards the end of the movie. The girlfriend asks Henry if he could fire up the carousel for the girls. It's more exciting than sitting around waiting on a night when you don't have any business.

Matt Mabry

So my friend, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid is another movie with Redford and Newman I hope it's your next one. It is one of my top ten all time. One of the best love stories, yes a really great love story and best song with Raindrops keep falling on my head. Also, the guy playing Lonagan in this movie is the shark fisherman from Jaws. The one who drew the Shark on the black board.

Terry Yelmene

What's endearing is that Cassie picks up on every story nuance and storyline, but she has no awareness of the history of the cinema - (given the example of... oh, I don't know.. say... Paul Newman and Robert Redford!!!) . I'm pretty certain the great Paul Newman would have loved Cassie. I also think Robert Redford would love her and this reaction too. And I would wager money that Cassie would love the humor and the adventure of Butch and Sundance. ALL I KNOW FOR SURE... is that I truly love The Sting as yet another absolute classic PiB reaction. There's been dozens of outstanding suggestions made in this thread of Redford movies... Newman movies..., some with love stories... (even to the classics of cinema history: 'The Way We Were'... for God’s sake!!!)... BUT I'm going to add a Paul Newman / Kevin Costner movie that is largely missed among this list and most lists, yet...is MOST APPROPRIATE FOR CASSIE (likely Carly too) - called; "Message In A Bottle-(1999)'... It's a movie that explores a man's love for a woman when it's most deeply held. I don't know that it would be another PiB classic reaction... but I think so.

Steve Mercier

Favorite Paul Newman movie...The Verdict. Fantastic movie, but also my favorite performance by Newman (and also by the great Jack Warden).

softshoes

Chicago and the 30s. Mob citiy Cass. Shooting up the streets and paying off the cops. You watched The Untouchables and that was Chicago in the 30s.

Jon Freezin-Rain

And having seen "The Sting" Cassie will now have the background for "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels'"

Isaac Reed

haha you may not know Paul Newman that well but I can almost guarantee you’ve used his condiments or drank his lemonade at some point in your life!

Michael Threapleton

Interesting to note how beloved Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid seems to be in this comments section. I'm on board with that. Yet I recall it getting lambasted in the western poll comments section. Has there been a popcorn population shift?

Johnny

Another Robert Redford movie that I don't think anyone has mentioned, is Legal Eagles. I haven't seen it in quite a while, but it's a good movie with a good cast, and I think Cassie would get into it.

Tyler Foster

Oh, also, I'm sure a couple of people mentioned it, but another great movie with Robert Shaw in it is The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. Possibly the most New York a New York movie has ever New Yorked. Also starring Walter Matthau and Ben Stiller's dad Jerry in a great role. Side note: do NOT, under any circumstances, watch the remake with Denzel Washington and John Travolta. One of the worst remakes I've ever seen.

Saw the original; great suggestion. The French Connection (1971) was very New York too. Thanks for the warning on the remake. One to avoid. There have been quite a few suggestions for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (itself a remake) but I warn against the dire remake The Hustle (2019). A black hole of a film where all humor goes to die. Painful to watch.

I don't think of it as a very good western movie, but it is a very good buddy action-adventure comedy, in my opinion.

Obsolyeet

I can't believe she didn't stick around for the after credit scenes!

Another Robert Redford one that I mentioned during some of your sports movie reactions is The Natural. Definitely an all time top sports movie.

Grumpy Old Man

Another great Robert Redford movie is Three Days of the Condor. It is kind of a spy thriller.

Trembling Colors

You have to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. A western with Robert Redford and Paul Newman together again this time as western outlaws.

Sam R.

That was great I also had never watched that movie and I loved your closing argument with your uncontrollable laughter 😄😄😄 that really felt like I knew you a little better and you saying don't put this in 🤣🤣🤣 good stuff Cassie that's why we love you . Yes Eve Arden played the principal in Grease great spot ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and the bar tender Murray Hamilton was the Mayor in Jaws

Something occurred to me watching it this time that I never realized before. While the movie cleverly gets us to sympathize with the con men at the beginning by showing us that the guy they are grifting would have kept the $5,000, they had no way of knowing that.. but then I realized that they did have a way of knowing that: when he moved out of the way to allow the "robber" to pass by with Luther's money (just like how Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker does in the first Spider-Man movie). Hooker doesn't throw his case tripping the robber until after that guy has demonstrated that he is not a stand-up guy. That he will not do the right thing. Hooker even points this out when he says "he didn't do s***." I suspect if the guy had actually tried to stop the robber, they wouldn't have gone through with the grift. Their code seems to only be to take it from people who have it coming.

That was one of my favorite movies, and I loved your reaction at the end. Another good con-man movie is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels from 1988. I think you would like that one too.

Matthew Scarth

Cassie, I know you have a ton of movies to get through but if you love this type of movie where a plan comes together you should watch The Brothers Bloom, it's one if the best of the genre but less well known.

❤❤❤ This has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it in the early 90s. The best reaction in the year I've been a patron, easily. You got rooked as bad as Lonegan!! Absolutely loved it and would watch it again with you bringing Carly into the fold...oh my gosh, I might even pay extra for that!! :D

Joshua James Wagoner

You should watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid if you enjoyed the Paul Newman Robert Redford dynamic.

Ragnar Miersch

Watching you fawn over Redford and Newman was my favorite part of the reaction. Growing up every female I knew over the age of 10 was in love with these guys. Last month it was Brad Pitt, same thing. And I remember you saying a few things about Bogart a few months ago. I'm not being critical by any means, just fascinated. It makes me wonder, however. Who in the current era of films to you find this attractive?

Jim Williams

I am a new Patron and I have spent 40 years in the broadcasting/TV as a producer, director, writer and executive. I find your reactions to films to be both fresh as well as entertaining. Redford and Newman are two of the most famous leading men in movie history. At the time Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid made news because the dream team of the two super stars - in this case two leading men wasn't done. But the duo got along so well they went on to do the Sting. I agree that you really must see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid b/c it a movie I really think you would enjoy plus I know your subscribers would love to see your reaction. Also, just glad to join the Pop Corn in Bed Family

I don't think Robert Redford and Brad Pitt are related. They spell and pronounce their names differently. 🤣🤣🤣

The music was the Entertainer by Scott Joplin and hit the top of the charts. Pretty good for a song written over a hundred years ago.

A “dick” is old time slang for police. Local police, railroad police. And Chicago, where this was set was and still is THE most corrupt city in the US. From the lowest neighborhood politicians to the mayor and most every civilian city worker and the police. Bribes, influence peddling, if there is any possible way for corruption it happens in Chicago and the state of Illinois

There’s another side to Redford, and it’s serious and impressive: his commitment to important social issues. “All the President’s Men” is the biggest example. (Screenwriter William Goldman, noting the huge impact it had on voters, said it might be one of the very few films to actually change the course of American history.) Then there is “Ordinary People” — the first film Redford directed. Such a beautiful story about family dynamics in the wake of a tragedy. And an intelligent, compassionate look at mental illness and psychiatric treatment. But the one that came to mind was “Brubaker”. I saw it again recently, and — wow. This one tackles prison reform. It’s based on a true story and Redford is wonderful in the title role. (There’s also a small part for a young Morgan Freeman.) Dramatic and inspiring film. But it’s also raw. The subject matter is not pretty, and the film doesn’t try to make it so. This was the right choice. Softened edges would have entirely undermined the film. As it stands, it’s excellent — and emotionally brutal.

OMG - when the movie was over, did you call Paul Newmans character gorfandorf!! too funny. Too many lord of the rings movies
