Never watch Casualties of War. Ever. Others have said it but I second the suggestion to watch Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. Very funny and unlike the ones you’ve seen so far.

Jason Dolan

On a scale of easy to difficult, where About Time is a 1 and Full Metal Jacket is a 10, this is one of the hardest movies you'll ever watch. It is important to see, but also, important not to dwell on it. I felt your pain watching this movie with you. I think if you ask people to put movies on that kind of scale though, it might make it easier for you to layer them in, so you don't go hardcore back to back, like 1 of these every two months at most.

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely tuning in for the premiere and live chat because I am fascinated to see how the YouTubers react to this reaction.

Celeste McAllister

With the YT edit this is still a hard watch movie, rough, crude and mean spirited, understanding that's what a Marine has to be to go through hell on earth and make it home alive..Vietnam vets didn't get the welcome home respect they deserved they got tagged as baby killers and imperialists..they were just hometown boys who chose to enlist or got drafted,I learned that one should never ask a VN vet "what was it like?" and expect a quick answer,no words can describe it to a civilian you had to be there "in the shit" as they say, what we know as PTSD used to be called "Shell Shock" Vietnam vets would be the focal point for PTSD research studies and treatment.

Ken Hylbert

I like this movie. I am a big fan of R Lee Ermey. However, I think it was not a good choice for Cassie to react to. We were soldiers or the Great escape would have been more enjoyable to watch

Miguel

This is always an incredibly difficult watch, which is why I've only seen it a handful of times, if that. This movie is actually incredibly realistic, especially the boot camp. The instructor, R. Lee Ermey, was a real drill instructor who was largely allowed to write his own dialogue due to his real-life experience

nick bell

Al Pacino would've made a good Hartman

Ria Grix

It was all filmed in the UK amazingly. Kubrick didn’t like leaving the country apparently. He imported a load of big tropical trees to make the east end of London look like Vietnam. The Beckton Gas Works was already partly demolished at the time of filming, so already looked war torn. Nowadays that stand in for Vietnam spends its time being a shopping precinct.

Robert Jewell

Dear Cassie, you're absolutely right to feel the way you do because although this is an excellent film, it is NOT a Memorial Day film and celebrates nothing about valor and frankly the folks who voted for this one completely disregarded the theme you were going for and frankly I find their whatever for you to watch this on Memorial Day kind of sadistic. Like I say I didn't vote for it because it's not a celebratory. I voted for the best Memorial Day film.on your list so go watch that if you want to unravel from this because it really does memorialize with a tremendous story The Best Years of Our Lives.

Eddie

Hard watch, but it is important to watch this movie at least once. Cassie's reaction is exactly how people should react to a movie like this. I'm just glad she watched it before the elementary school shooting. Seeing kids shot is all too real now and days.

Steven Ashford

We’ll I’m glad this is behind you. It’s a tough watch. My buddy, who was a Marine, just got in town, and I asked him how real was the beginning. I hate to tell you he said was not exaggerated. Matter fact he said it was watered down compared to his basic training. But like other patreons have said hessid they do build you up. One for the Viet Congs best snipers was a woman, sent to kill our best sniper Carlos Hathcock. Ultimately her saw her first.

David

A terrible movie for Memorial day.

David Crabtree

I'm glad you can now put this garbage film behind you.

'Pappy' Johnston
>>84855062

100% agree. Those would have been better choices for her to watch, and what I voted for. Face it guys, (...and some girls), to us old Devil-Dawgs who have been through the meat grinder and "in the shit" it's bad enough to think about. But for a sweet and innocent kid like Cassie....well, I KNEW that, although it would expand her horizons, it would also scar her for life. Hope she shakes it off and can put a smile back on her face soon.

'Pappy' Johnston
>>84855390

Truth. 100% guaranteed and verified. The machine gunner in the helicopter shooting the women and children by not "...leading them as much..." was the actor originally slated to play Hartman. Ermey was hired as a technical advisor and was supposed to teach him how to be a drill instructor but the actor had a hard time picking it up. So they 'plugged and played, Ermey into the role.

GamerGal8684
>>84855062

Why wouldn't people stop and listen when I said that this was not the right movie for her. People who care for her and her wellbeing would not want her to watch this. This is not a movie that is easy to put behind you. There are many other movies people could see with R Lee in it. It does not have to be this one. I would have to say that We Were Soldiers is very well done and is very good and grabbing the heart. It is still a war film but one that can be stomached. We love you Cassie,

Michael Threapleton
>>84856107

Knowing this was always a problem for me as it would often take me out of the moment. In particular, pay attention to the traffic circle in the first Vietnam scene (before the camera theft).

Josh Link

I’m of the opinion that the only war movies worth watching (or making) are the ones that make war painful to watch. I’d put Come and See, The Battle of Algiers, and All Quiet on the Western Front in that category.

Godzilla Jones

You're not supposed to feel good about war. It is ugly and horrible and we should only ever engage in it for the absolute best reasons. Reducing depictions of war to tales of heroes and villains is comforting and it certainly makes for good recruitment material for young men looking for direction, but war isn't black and white. It is red in tooth and claw. It destroys lives and the only thing it does more than that is line the pockets of rich old men. You want to honor our fallen dead? Work to build a world where their sacrifice is unnecessary. A world without soldiers. A world that does not glorify their deaths in a bid to create more willing victims to the death machine that is US foreign policy. Personally, I'm tired of good men being sent to die for terrible reasons. The real battle we should be fighting is inside ourselves, every day, to become the sort of person who, if everyone were to do it, would make war obsolete. We are all humans, earthlings if you like, and we're in this together and we absolutely *must* stop killing each other over resources and petty cultural differences and see each other for what we really are. Each other. Each other one and the same. Brothers and sisters and mothers and fathers and daughters and sons and each of them another iteration of the ones before and everything you do unto them you do also unto yourself. For they are you and you are them and how can you kill another when you also are killing yourself? And how could any of this killing, even when it is a tragic necessity, ever be looked on and seen as good? This is the perfect memorial day movie. You'll never convince me otherwise.

David Woodbridge

It seems Kubrick films may not be your cup of tea, Cassie. The only Kubrick film that I think you’d possibly like is “Dr. Strangelove,” a comedy that satirizes Cold War fears and policies. Despite its high stakes, it is genuinely funny and has a light-hearted tone. However, my guess is that Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” will win a sci-fi poll one of these days. It will be interesting to see your reaction to that film.

Jay
>>84863345

I don't think the more painful or bleak depictions of war are the only ones worth watching. But I did find it strange that Cassie was surprised a film could have such a strong anti war sentiment, so I think it's good she's watched this for a different perspective. I know there's complaints about it not being appropriate for Memorial Day, but that's another issue. Come and See makes FMJ look like Pixar. I was in a much worse state watching that than Cassie was watching this:)

Roger Banks

I really wish you had been able to watch some other Kubrick movies like Dr Strangelove or 2001 before getting to this one.

RocktSurgeon
>>84863345

It doesn't really surprise me at all, I think its pretty common for people to think any war movie is just going to be a big dumb action movie meant to make war look cool and heroic and if you only know FMJ from pop culture references at best easy to file it away as just another. Totally understandable, especially since realistically most war movies are heavy enough on action (and many really don't bother much with nuance) that even when they do have anti war themes, some miss them or ignore them. A great (in some ways) example would be Starship Troopers (the film, themes definitely differ from the book). Granted in that case, it goes -so- all in on the action and satirizes all the tropes so much that lots of people come away thinking it really is just a dumb action movie about making space war look cool.

Phillip Ribbink

I'll be honest I have mixed feelings about this movie. I think the first half is masterfully done, in terms of portraying the harsh reality of boot camp. R. Lee Ermey did a great job as Hartman. The whole second act is FUBAR, even for a film about the Vietnam War it's too damn grim. Even Fury which I know you hated, had it's light moments. And as an Anti-War film, I find it heavy handed in its execution. The difference between this and something like Saving Private Ryan. Is that at least in Saving Private Ryan, is that in Private Ryan the characters are actually human beings. They talk about their mothers, their wives, home, we get to know them. In Fullmetal Jacket, the only things we learn about the Marines are their sexual proclivities and their desire to kill Viet-Cong. None of them are particularly likeable, if you met any of them in real life, you'd avoid them. The only one close to a human being with emotions is Joker. And he's honestly kind of an asshole. Overall not a great choice for Memorial Day. Which I think would've been better served by something portraying, war in its misery, but also it's humanity and it's nobility. (I know there's not a lot noble about it, I mean things like acts of bravery, that sort of thing). Hacksaw Ridge would be a good example of the kind of film I'm talking about.

RocktSurgeon
>>84864908

2001 is... a great, super influential movie but also just a very strange one. Granted, really strange aspects are probably fitting given the subject of.. that part of the movie... but it's one of the best examples of a movie I think is great but just can't really enjoy enough to ever actually want to watch it again and that's as a life long hard sci-fi space geek who grew up on Clarke, Asimov etc. It might work as a reaction, I'd certainly be curious, but no idea if she'd like it.

RocktSurgeon
>>84864908

But if anybody suggests Clockwork... admittedly doubt it would be suggested much less chosen, but wow that would probably not work!

Darren Hill

Cassie, you won't react to too many movies as intense and confronting as this. Your editor did a great job for the YT edit. The Nth Vietnamese overriding motivation was the reunification of their country and freeing the south from what they viewed as foreign occupation. The Sth Vietnamese government was corrupt to the core. Ho Chi Minh the leader of the North was more of a nationalist than a communist. Every emotion you experienced was justified. Your obvious deep confliction about the fate of the sniper moved both me and Suzie "everything is wrong, nothing right about this situation". That comment summed the movie and the Vietnam war up perfectly. So ironic wasn't it that after all the degrading misogynist dialogue. The local women being treated like meat for sale. That their greatest nightmare ended up being a teenage girl. Stanley Kubrick's intention was to paint a bleak picture. That's why 'Paint it Black' is played over the closing credits. Hats off to you Cassie for your courage in reacting to this movie.

Darren Hill
>>84863345

@Jay...I had to take a break during Come and See. But I'm glad I watched it.

GamerGal8684
>>84860798

Saying I told you doesn't do anything to calm her. Don't do that. You can be better then that.

pineapplvampire

I really hope you watch The Great Escape, which almost won this poll. It’s really good, with a fair amount of humor spread throughout (that doesn’t take away from the seriousness of other moments) and genuinely cool characters. A very different tone from this movie.

Michael Threapleton
>>84863345

Darren & Jay, Come and See is definitely harrowing. I think it is important to not shy away from difficult films. Come and See is found on many "best films of all time" lists for good reason.

Andy

A really good Memorial Day movie(whether you film reaction to it, or just watch it on your own) would be “Taking Chance” with Kevin Bacon.

David Woodbridge
>>84864908

I agree, Josh. "2001" is a very difficult film to understand, much less enjoy, on a single viewing. But I'd be curious to see Cassie's reaction to it. And compared to "The Shining," "Full Metal Jacket," and "A Clock Work Orange," "2001" is almost a family film!

Rose
>>84875376

Taking Chance is the one I hope Cassie considers for next year’s Memorial Day reaction.

Patrick Flanagan
>>84863345

I feel like some of the more, ah, "overprotective" Patrons here (trying to be charitable) would probably call the FBI and report a hate crime if our host watched COME AND SEE.

Alex Villarreal

Matthew Modine (Private Joker) and Vincent D'Onofrio (Private Pyle) were friends before making this movie; when he was cast, Modine was the one who recommended to Kubrick that he consider auditioning D'Onofrio. Modine and D'Onofrio are still good friends and frequently tweet each other messages on twitter, which is sweet to see.

David Crabtree
>>84875376

She doesn't even need to wait until next Memorial Day to watch it. Honoring our fallen heroes doesn't need to happen just once a year.

Jason Harris

I recommend movies to my sister all the time - but I don't recommend movies that I know she won't like. I think most of us knew that Cassie would not like this film and we could have chosen better on her behalf. A VERY good Vietnam War movie is Oliver Stone's Platoon, and while it too is difficult to watch at times, the overall arc and story are one that I think Cassie would enjoy much more than she did this film.

nick bell

Maybe Cassie needs to ok her movie choices with everyone before she starts a poll. We can have a poll on what movies are not acceptable for polls. This way Cassie will be protected from the horrors of a film some people don't like. And never mind the others that like the movie. They dont matter. We need to not only insult any movie we don't think is acceptable, we need to insult those who vote for it as well. I mean what are some people thinking voting for a movie just because Cassie offered it as a choice. We should know better than Cassie or those close to her. I'm still amazed she has the channel up after her harrowing experience with FMJ. Maybe it's time to proactively ban movies from PIB. I'll start. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Sorry but Cassie can't be made to watch this. Mental illness is no joke. And zero redeeming qualities. This will not make her happy so....gotta go

Darren Hill
>>84891576

I noticed she has already racked up 70K in views in just 13hrs. That says it all. Most of Cassie's fans want to see her occasionally react to content that pushes the boundaries. Or by today's standards something that occasionally breaks them. I would like to see Cassie's channel flourish and reach it's full potential. Not be restricted by puritanical wowsers who think they know what's best.

nick bell
>>84891576

Sure. If getting YouTube views is the goal then Cassie would keep watching these types of movies. But I'm not sure thats the goal anymore. More romantic comedies and feel good films are the way to go. Forget all that other noise. Lol

David
>>84891576

Thinking that this movie isn't a good Memorial day movie doesn't make one 'puritanical.' It reflects the fact that the men who actually served aren't portrayed well in this film. Memorial day is a real day of remembrance to those who lost brothers, this does nothing for that cause.

nick bell
>>84891576

Then the movie shouldn't have been included on the list David. Why make hundreds of voters feel bad for their choice? Like I said....maybe time for a poll on what movies belong in a poll. Or a poll on what movies some of you think are inappropriate for Cassie or this channel. I thought these kinds of inappropriate movies were obvious to everyone. But I was wrong evidently. One man's treasure is obviously another's trash.

Jake McNulty
>>84891576

According to Letterboxd and the Popcorn Requests app Cassie has already seen 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'.

Darren Hill
>>84891576

For someone who puts so much effort into her channel I think she deserves the financial reward that comes with more views. I just want occasional variety. She reacts to plenty of feel good, romantic and franchise stuff. What about some genuine thrillers like Misery, Pacific Heights, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, Seven, No Country for Old Men....just suggestions.

Darren Hill
>>84891576

@Dave ....That's where your and my opinions differ. War isn't all medals and saluting the flag, it's damn ugly. Does Platoon or Apocalypse Now portray US servicemen in Vietnam in a better light.....No. We've akready seen Cassie react to plenty of stuff from other historical theatres of war. A Vietnam movie was way overdue.

nick bell
>>84891576

I dunno Darren. Some of those movies will most likely be considered unsuitable for Cassie. I don't make the rules. Fatal Attraction was slammed by some in here. Not appropriate for mothers day, Cassie won't like this, blah blah blah....forget that Cassies mom picked it. That doesn't matter evidently. This won't change unfortunately because no one actually knows if Cassie wants everyone to screen these movies upfront for images or language that may be inappropriate for her and then warn her. I edit my thoughts way too much here.

Happy Hanukkah

I have yet to watch the full reaction. Did Cassie eventually figure out that Animal Mother is played by Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb from Firefly)? (And is there a statue of Animal Mother in some Vietnamese town?)

Jake McNulty
>>84891576

She seems fine to me. Cassie is an adult, I think she can handle mature content, and I'm pretty sure she doesn't need someone else's permission to 'let' her watch any film.

Darren Hill
>>84891576

@ nick Bell...I agree Fatal Attraction isn't a Mothets Day movie. But that's not a reason to put a line through it completely. And there is no logical reason why Cassie shouldn't react to the others.

Future Boy
>>84855062

Scarred for life. Okay. It was a group of actors reading lines while a camera pointed at them.

Future Boy
>>84858470

300 kids die every day in war zones. There's no optimal time to watch violence.

Rose
>>84875376

Ofc not. But it would be nice to have Cassie save it as a reaction so that it gets more exposure. The film flies under the radar and doesn't get the air time it deserves.

Armchair Wizard
>>84891576

Nick, why are you so salty lmao? We get it, you're upset about some people's comments regarding Full Metal Jacket. How long are you going to whine about this? She saw the movie. Mission accomplished. We can move on now.

nick bell
>>84891576

Lol..salty? Nah...it's all in fun. And I just respond to what I read. We cool?

Damien beatty

Like many have said before Cassie is an adult. There are too many patrons on here that seem to think she will be corrupted, or her faith will diminish because of these movies! Ridiculous, she puts movies into polls that she wants to, she has mentioned that there are family members that look out for her and weed out movies they don't think she would be traumatized by in the past. She herself has said that she wants to break the barriers that held her back before. People need to stop treating like a child!

Robert Jewell
>>84857841

Think about it. There is a major schism between celebrating Memorial Day and recommending FMJ and if those people I don't know just thought she was asking for a good war film so be it, maybe it went over their heads. That's something people with popular YouTube/Patreon channels have to deal with, but Cassie's definitely asking for her viewers' recommendations and recommending what is completely the opposite of what she's interested in is if not sadistic it's oblivious. So you're right I'm calling people I never met kind of sadistic.

nick bell
>>84857841

Then your problem is with the list Cassie put up. She asked us all to pick one from the list. It's a movie. It's a fairly popular and well known movie. She didnt ask us to only pick a nice war movie. If you think people that like it and want to see Cassies reaction to it are sadistic then I'm sorry, but you're the one with the issue. You're reading far more into this channel than most people.

Jay

Just a little tidbit from the shoot, a family of rabbits were killed by one of the explosions in the Vietnam scenes. Kubrick was a big animal mother, sorry, lover and was very upset about it. So much so that he called off the rest of the day's shoot. Cassie probably thinks Kubrick is some sort of inhumane, bloodthirsty maniac after watching this and The Shining so just wanted to drop that bit of info in:)

Jay
>>84891576

Wasn't Fatal Attraction the highest grossing movie in the world the year it came out? Sorry, but anyone who believes a movie with that kind of mass appeal could be unsuitable for our host needs their head checked.

nick bell
>>84891576

You remember the mother's day poll Jay. The group that always wants happier reactions seems to stick together. Less interested in YT views and and more interested in good time feelings.

Stick Figure Studios
>>84853495

Good for her! That's terrific! I love it when her YT videos do well. She deserves all the success she can get. Really couldn't happen to a nicer person. :-)

Jay
>>84863345

@Patrick+Michael, I wouldn't veto Come and See for this channel, purely because of the WWII subject matter. Despite the surreal, nightmarish tone, it's regarded as a highly accurate depiction of what went on in Eastern Europe. But if Cassie read this exchange and said "I don't ever want to watch that movie", I'd be fine with it. It's not for everyone, even the Cinema Rules guys were upset by it and I've seen them laugh their way through some horrific stuff:)

Robert Jewell
>>84857841

Well, I appreciate your thoughts. I saw all the choices etc. I just think FMJ as a recommended MDay movie is inappropriate. Do you think it is? To me it's like choosing Audition as an Easter movie.

Happy Hanukkah
>>84895999

1. Thanks, Bjorn. (I doubt that anyone is interested, but for the record: Q-17:45, A-23:29.) 2. I humbly apologize for so inexplicably overlooking the opportunity to coin the moniker "Animal Mudder."

Raj K. Dixit
>>84859939

This movie, like all Kubrick films, is a masterpiece. Not the most user-friendly flick, I grant, but hardly garbage. It's well made, well acted, thought provoking, and stirs the emotions - in short, it does everything a great film should.

Raj K. Dixit
>>84863345

Come and See is incredible. It would be a tough watch for Cassie, but she handled Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, so she could do it - but there would be a LOT of tears during her reaction.

nick bell
>>84857841

I like almost all these movies and I'm sure they all mean different things to different people on Memorial day. Right? I'm sure there are plenty of vets who have no issue with that movie. On Memorial day or any other.

Raj K. Dixit
>>84864908

I love 2001 and consider it the greatest movie ever made (I know why Citizen Kane usually is considered #1 and I understand, but I'd pick 2001), but Cassie might find it too cold and bizarre and off-putting. Still, I'd love to see her react to it. Dr. Strangelove would probably be perfect for her, as it is pretty approachable. That film has you laughing and feeling guilty, thinking "I shouldn't laugh at this - this is horrible!" - yet you can't sop laughing at the sheer madness/absurdity of the situations on screen. She would also like Barry Lyndon (it has a love story!) and it's so beautifully filmed. Just my 2 cents.

Raj K. Dixit
>>84901555

Well said. I try to offer Cassie my opinion on whether she'd enjoy a movie, and even sometimes give warnings that movie XYZ would be very tough for her, but I would never flat out tell her that she CAN'T watch a given movie. An example would be John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece "The Thing." I'd love to see her react to it, but have stated to her that it would be a very difficult watch for her, and I would totally understand if she passed on it. It's more violent and gory than Alien and Aliens, both of which she reacted to and, shall we say, respected & appreciated, if not enjoyed. But Cassie is an adult woman, and she is fully capable of deciding what she wants to watch / react to! Some commenters seem to think she's a little girl. Cassie, just know that your supporters stand behind you no matter what you decide to watch or not watch. Take care.

People vote for the film they like the most, regardless of the theme of the poll, and they're not wrong to do it. If it's put in a poll then it's fair game. The Godfather would win most polls it was in, even if the theme was comedy. (I love Full Metal Jacket but voted for The Great Escape. But no one who voted for FMJ was wrong, and they certainly aren't sadistic.)

I think you could be right, Raj, about "Barry Lyndon." The one thing that could hold "Barry Lyndon" back is the remoteness of the main character himself. Now that I think about it, "Paths of Glory" and "Spartacus" might also be good options. Yes, they cover dark subjects, but they have actual heroic characters. And they're not hard-R-rated films like "Full-Metal-Jacket" and "The Shining." But you're right that "Barry Lyndon" would also be a potentially good option.

I mean it. I'm not being disingenuous. I like to see Cassie do well no matter what she's watching. I've never felt or said otherwise.

Nick, original comment is a First ballot Hall of famer. You cut through the burgeoning strain of covert misogyny, infantilization, and soft bigotry of low expectations with a light saber.

You may be happy her reaction to FMJ is doing well but you were dead set against her watching it. And in your own subtle way did what you could to influence the poll result. All because you think she's a delicate sensitive little flower who will wilt when confronted with certain edgy or controversial content. I give her more credit and believe she's made of sturdy stuff. Some of the other reasons thrown up like the movie has 'no hope' or feel good angle to it, please ! At last check she has 92K views in 24 hrs. Looks like it's going to be her most watched reaction in months. Do you think she is stronger and more educated after watching FMJ ?... I think so.

Exactly! And besides even something like 'Full Metal Jacket' isn't that extreme. It's not like anyone's going to recommend any Lars von Trier or Michael Haneke films any time soon.

Remember, Darren, that I said I wasn't going to discuss this particular subject with you anymore. Would you like to talk about something else? :-)

Darren Hill
>>84891576

@Christopher Bowman....maybe because the 'Dudley Do-Rights' will be at it again the next time something confronting, edgey or not to their particular taste is on a poll. They're the ones who need to get over it.

Darren Hill

I missed that reply however I agree. Our opinions are poles apart on this . So not much point discussing it further. We'll just go around in circles.

Stick Figure Studios
>>84853495

Right. That's why I wrote that lengthy response on the other thread essentially saying all I really wanted to say on the topic: because it seemed clear to me that our constantly rehashing it was just not productive. I am, however, more than happy to discuss other movie-related things with you. :-)

There are so many great movies I never see get suggested here and I'm not talking war movies or thrillers. Cassie would just adore Terms of Endearment. I am sure you would agree the interactions between Shirley MacClaine and Jack Nicholson are cinema gold. Cassie may actually like him for a change. An Officer and a Gentleman or Urban Cowboy. Yes I'm a Debra Winger fan. Or the occasional cult classic like The Warriors or Blues Brothers. I see she has more franchise movies programmed this week which is fine. But it's nice when she sometimes throws a crumb to us boomers.

Well, I'm Gen-X myself, but yeah, the direction I personally would love to see the channel move in is away from a lot of the recent franchise/IP stuff (although I know they get views) and more towards truly great classic films. The really fine works of cinema tend to not do so well in this community (the really low numbers for CHINATOWN in the most recent poll demonstrate this). In another comment someone pulled out the old chestnut of CITIZEN KANE being "boring." Now, I know that is not an uncommon perspective among the younger, less cinematically literate Internet movie buffs, but it is still discouraging to find in this community (especially since I actually sent Cassie a DVD copy of that title in the hopes she'll actually get around to watching it at some point). Im sure she would love TERMS OF ENDEARMENT (I am also a big Debra winger fan; she's in one of my all-time favorite films SHADOWLANDS with Anthony Hopkins). Even films that aren't great but are still significant pop culture products, like BLUES BROTHERS, would be good. She outright said that when she approaches an old, black and white or period film, she has that little bias in the back of her mind that tells her it's not going to be as good until she watches it and thinks it's amazing. I'd love to see her venturing out of her comfort zone into more classic movies (by the likes of Frank Capra, John Ford and Orson Welles), more silent movies (like Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd), more foreign movies (like Kurosawa, Fellini and Truffaut) and more arthouse movies (like Malick, Allen and Cassavetes). I think Cassie has the makings of a great cinephile. ;-)

I thought this was an interesting pick for Memorial Day because it is anti-war. It seems slightly accurate the first half besides a soldier getting a magazine into a barrack. The whole first half is to shoe the dehumanizing of kids into killers. Then the 2nd half is about dehumanizing soldiers into killers. Cassie should watch a marines reaction to the first half of movie to better understand why boot camp is like that. I don’t think Kubrick cared to show why marines do what they do only to say everything about war is wrong. Everything about war is a failure but humans are called to fight in them and they should remembered .

Kubrick had incredible range as a director, but Cassie has happened upon two of his three grimmest films for her first taste. (The only bit of his output even deeper in the deep end is A Clockwork Orange.) I'd love to see reactions to Strangelove, or 2001, or Spartacus or Barry Lyndon next.

You're presuming a lot about that crazy guy that said Citizen Kane is boring.

Mike Lemon
>>84853495

Since I am that crazy guy, I can tell you this- "not an uncommon perspective among the younger, less cinematically literate Internet movie buffs"- is wrong on a few counts. But in fairness it is a general statement and not specific to me.

Stick Figure Studios
>>84853495

I worded that statement very carefully as I was not suggesting that it necessarily applied to this specific individual who called KANE "boring." It is, however, something that I have absolutely observed as an online phenomenon in the past couple decades ("Overrated" is another little chestnut often bandied about by that same demographic). Is it true of everyone? No, of course not. It's a generalization. If the shoe fits, wear it.

Mike Lemon
>>84853495

"to this specific individual"- Why do you keep doing that (just curious) when I told you I am the "specific individual" that said it? It's weird reading you talk to me about me in a generic third person. Like I said, just curious.

Stick Figure Studios
>>84853495

I did not know that it was you we were talking about. I guess I either missed that little tidbit in your last response or maybe it was edited after I had read it to include that fact. At any rate, it certainly sounded like you at least knew the person, but it did not occur to me that you were the person... not that it would have changed the content of my comments. When discussing other people, I always compose my thoughts as if those I am referring to can read them.

Mike Lemon

I don't edit anything without noting it with an "edit- X", excepting something very minor (missing period, a/an, and the like) in the first minute or so of posting.

THANK YOU! 👆 nailed it. I have favorites. But I blend my favorites into, ok what would she like to. ET is not my fav movie of all time for me. But when I think, "1) OK I liked it, 2) and its a classic, 3) I think she would really like it." I'll suggest it then.

Kubrick liked living in the UK and he was afraid of flying. The scenes in Hue were filmed in an area near London that that had been built by expatriates from French Indochina and so it had all the right kind of architecture (square buildings, lots of concrete, etc.). It was scheduled to be demolished, so Kubrick got permission to use basically a whole section of a city as a movie set before they tore it all down. Far from being a tropical hell-hole, it was actually very cold during filming and there are several shots where you can see an actor's breath because it was so cold.

Dr. Strangelove, maybe. I would not recommend 2001: A Space Odyssey on the uninitiated. I'm not saying anybody needs to give spoilers, but I think people do need to be prepped for it. Personally, it's in my top 5 of all time, but to someone going into it with no idea what it's about it's just going to be incredibly long and boring. (Or maybe I'm being a condescending jerk. 🙁)

Brandon Dague

No offense but this was the worst movie to watch on Memorial Day. I respect the community but Memorial Day is to remember Veterans...not highlight the bad parts of war....We Were Soldiers or Taking Chance were the best options to remember Memorial Day.

Orcagirl78

TBH, I've never seen the full version of this movie. Was never really on my radar. After watching this reaction, I honestly have no desire to see the full movie. Really doesn't seem like my cup of tea.

If they were going to watch a movie about Vietnam they should have watched "We Were Soldiers" on Memorial Day.
