Hey guys! Here is our reaction to E.T., we had a lot of fun! This was different than I thought it was going to be, I thought it was going to be like "Signs"  with a scary vibe! I feel like this was a 15 year old's dream movie and I loved the coming of age feel. It had that 80's movie magic that I've only felt in those movies. Glad to have crossed this classic off the list!!

[Full Reaction] E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Comments

Ramah Mustangs

Thanks to your reactions, I felt like I was watching E.T. For the first time. As always you did a great job. And thank you for pointing out that the older brother had no idea what he was talking about when he said those were coyote tracks.

JohnnyUtah

Not sure if you realized this watching Hill House but the dad, in the past, is the boy I'm E.T. Henry Thomas!

David RedEagle

Oh wow, I think the last time I watched this I was a kid and we watched it on a VHS lol

Sam Fuller

If you ever make it to Universal Studios, you should go on the ET ride

Celeste McAllister

At first I got the vibe from Elliott that all he truly wanted was his father to come home.

Sahitya

Wow, havnt seen this in 20 yrs. Let's see how this goes

Alex Villarreal

This was great to watch growing up, but I think I cry even more now when I watch it as an adult.

Jyn Jilly

Carly!? I thought you did this one alone, I can't wait to check this out! Also I do like your solo reactions too haha

Alex Villarreal
>>87224493

I remember having this on VHS! I remember part of the tape was green, which was so weird to see.

Marty McGee

Can't wait to watch this one again with you. It's been so long. I mentioned in another thread that I was Elliot's age when this came out, but it's earlier than I thought. So I was probably closer to Gertie's age. Still I remember it being a huge part of my kid-life! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. It's been a hard week though, and I've got to get some shut-eye. So it'll have to wait until this weekend before I see it. Something heartwarming to look forward to though. Thanks!!

Robin T

Oh wow, is that why you hadn't seen it yet, you thought it was a scary movie? Well no wonder 😂 Though the beginning did scare my kids, I had to convince them to stay, that it wasn't really that kind of movie. E.T. is THE definitive Spielberg movie, his masterpiece which best defines him as an artist and is his most personal film. Though he didn't write it, much of the family dynamic and Elliott's character is drawn from his own experience. For that reason, it's also often the fault line which divides Spielberg's fans from his critics. Either this is a transformative work of genius or a bunch of manipulative hooey. Either way, I think we all agree the music is fantastic.

DarthChef

Favorite fun movie fact: Spielberg wanted the audience to feel as if they were in the movie within Elliott's perspective, so he shot every camera angle low, at about the same height as Elliott.

tiny baby kitty man

24 minutes in and had to comment at just how good "it's like a sloth meets a ninja turtle" was. Literal LOL at that.

Yann Laliberté

One of the greatest movie experience of my life when I saw it in theater at 5 years old

nick bell

So iconic growing up. ET was everywhere

Zane From Canada

I'll...Be...Right...Here. 👉❤️ 🥲😭 It's pure happy magic.

James Payne

I haven’t seen this one in years.

Brad P

Members of E.T.'s race make a cameo appearance as delegates during the Senate scene in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace so there's a possibility that E.T. really did know Yoda.

Jeff Milcheck

I’m just starting this reaction so I’ll give my thoughts later… just wanted to mention, you should totally check out Elliot’s audition video for this on YouTube. That kids amazing! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tA5giyG8E7g Also, I second the recommendation for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Another Spielberg classic!

Jeff Milcheck
>>87228035

Which means E.T. Is in the same universe as Star Wars… and E.T. had powers of the mind… which means?!….. E.T. Was a Jedi!

Joon S

Elliott was played by Henry Thomas, who played youngest brother Samuel in Legend of the Fall

Texas Anla'Shok

According to supplementary materials, ET's species has a kind of low-level hive mind, in that they're all connected and can't survive without that connection. When ET is left behind, he loses that connection and begins to deteriorate, until he meets Elliot. He connects to Elliot to buy himself time, but his failing health begins to kill Elliot as well. When the end comes, he breaks the connection to save Elliot. Now as for the government officials, if they have determined there's a possible threat to national security (and make no mistake that the US government, or any other government for that matter, would identify an extraterrestrial as a possible threat) in that house, they have the authority to enter and contain it. The nods to Star Wars (and the appearance of ET's species in Episode I) are an informal agreement between Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Spielberg was about the only one who knew from the start that Star Wars was going to be a hit. Even Lucas thought it would be a flop, so much that rather than wait for the returns, he decided to go on vacation. Spielberg went too, and on the beach Lucas started telling him about a new character, a fedora wearing, bullwhip wielding adventurous archaeologist.

djKENTO

Can anyone confirm which version was watched?

Ryan

Great reaction vid. Thanks as always. Great movie.

Tara

Hey Cassie, yep the little sister is Drew Barrymore. I think you guys just figured it out. I haven’t seen this movie in about 25 years, but it still gets me and the music is just magical. I first saw this movie when I was 12 in the theater and like you mentioned, it was a blockbuster and Elliott became a very well known character played by Henry Thomas, so when I saw Legends of The Fall for the first time and saw Samuel, the youngest brother, I said “It’s Elliott!” John Williams did the music for Raiders of the Lost Ark and ET which came out within a couple years of each other and both by Spielberg. Now when you see the logo for Amblin Entertainment before a movie with Elliott and ET on the bike in front of the full moon, you will know where it is from. Thank you for watching this. I’m still smiling and I also love the scene where all of boys started flying and the music started and I watched it again. 🍿

Robert Snyder

I remember my parents took me to see this the night before I had surgery #19 when I was 9. We always did something before my operations. I loved it so much and wanted to see it again but wasn’t able. I had to wait for the video. (6 yrs later) Not really straight to video back then. :) The best memories! ❤️

Philip Herman

The girl that Elliot kissed is Erica Eleniak, best known for being on the tv show Baywatch.

Jason Mangen

Thats how we were as kids back then

Stick Figure Studios
>>87227553

That final sentiment from ET is so profound. It's probably more than Elliott ever got from his own father when he left.

Caomhan84

Still makes me cry all these years later.

Stick Figure Studios

As a friend of mine aptly put it, this is one of the best things ever made by a human. I was six when this movie came out and I saw it in multiple times in the theater. I think ET, along with STAR WARS and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, is responsible for stimulating my young imagination and sense of wonder as well as igniting my love for movies in the first place (not to mention a big part of why Steven Spielberg is my favorite director to this day). This film is truly something special. It is pure magic. Made for the young and old alike. There's a reason why it became the highest grossing film of all time when it was released in the summer of 1982. I cannot wait to watch your reaction.

Peter Guertin

I don’t want it to be lost on Cassie and Carly that ET was the highest grossing movie of all time until Jurassic park surpassed it. It was a truly iconic film.

Philip G.

Ah yes. The cheap knock off of the masterpiece Mac and Me

N M

Let me know when it’s on Netflix or Amazon Prime. I’m not paying more money to watch this.

Tinkerbell

Glad you guys liked it. You mentioned the Easter eggs from Star Wars-Spielberg and Lucas are buddies so the references make sense. Some fun trivia: ET was the highest grossing movie of the 80s and it was the top grossing movie of all time until it was dethroned by Jurassic Park a little over 10 years later. It was nominated for best picture and I’ve read that people were pretty surprised when it lost. Also, the boy who played Elliot is the same actor who played the youngest brother in Legends of the Fall-take another look. I was 3 when the movie came out, so I just remember ET being everywhere when I was a kid. I watch it a lot even as an adult-I pull it out every time I need a good cry because it never fails! I agree with the suggestions on here that exploring Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a good next Spielberg film. I don’t think it pulls on your emotions the way this one does, but it really is so good.

TinCan Cosmanaut

34m in. I was waiting for the moment you guys recognized Drew Barrymore! I was happy when it happened

JC762

Watching the confused looks when the speak and spell first appeared……priceless. :)

Jeff Milcheck

Finished the reaction. Knew you’d love it. And the nostalgia slapped me right in the face! I mentioned earlier in another thread this was my first time seeing a movie in the theaters. I was 5. I actually think it might have been my first memory. I remember I saw it with my neighbors family. They brought their own snacks. It was fruit... yeah, fruit..... took awhile before I acquainted junk food as part of the theater experience. Now the only fruit I eat at the theater might be Raisnettes. Dumped into my large, extra buttered popcorn.

Patrick Egan

This movie was a huge part of my childhood, I still get choked up at the end. Not when E.T. says good-bye, but for some reason the rainbow contrail gets me every time.

TinCan Cosmanaut

You guys must be recording on July 4th cuz it sounds like attack on Pearl Harbor in the background

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Great watch party. Many thanks PiB duo. E.T. defined the early 80's generation, myself included. There's something magical about it. And John Williams did it again with a wonderful classical score (which he won an Oscar for I believe). IMHO, I think this one, along with "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) and "Jaws" (1975) showcased a particular style of filmmaking by Steven Spielberg, which I consider to be a signature style of his late 70's and early 80's work. Point in fact, he produced and shadow directed a supernatural horror film that same year called "Poltergeist" (1982), and you can clearly see the similarities in the filming style and production atmosphere between it, E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Another one is "The Goonies" (1985), one of my all time favorites. Ah, good times. Incredible talents in front of and behind the camera. A true pop cultural phenomena of its time. They do not make them like they used to, that's for sure. Cheers!

Robert da Spruce

Wow! That brings back some memories! It’s probably been decades since I’ve watched E.T. I enjoyed the reaction ladies! You guys are funny with your “eat from the box or put the Reese’s Pieces in a bowl” banter! 😂 Also, I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed. The Logo for Amblin Entertainment (Steven Spielberg’s company), is a silhouette of Elliot and E.T. on a bike flying in front of the moon. You will also see this at the beginning of Spielberg movies. Anyways, a nice walk down memory lane! Nice work!

JiminyMac

I'm an 80s kid and I love this movie! The musical score has that classic John Williams style too.

Brent Petty

IIRC, this was the #1 box office film of all time until Jurassic Park passed it.

Shawn Kildal

Dee Wallace Stone plays a great sympathetic mom here. I loved her in Cujo as well. Most of her roles were probably in scary movies.

Brent Petty

Per Wikipedia: Mars, Incorporated refused to allow M&M's to be used in the film, believing that E.T. would frighten children. The Hershey Company was asked if Reese's Pieces could be used, and it agreed. This product placement resulted in a large increase in Reese's Pieces sales.

Caomhan84

I have a feeling that everyone who saw this back in the day has particular memories of it, be it in the theater or at home. For me, I think it was 1989 or 1990. I distinctly remember Reese's Pieces, and I remember the shag carpeting we had in our old house because I started the movie lying on the ground, and finished the movie with my head in my mom's lap on the couch, crying. I also remember the plastic tubing and the zipper thing around the beds when they were working on ET and Elliott because I had been in the hospital the year before and I remember the SMELL of the plastic. And also, how gray ET was when he was dying...that's burned into my memory. These days when I watch it, I'm also reminded how much season 1 of Stranger Things borrows from it, too.

Michael Weiner

The screenplay was written by Melissa Mathison who was Harrison Ford’s second wife.

Uncle 'Traveling' Matt

"This is reality, Greg!" I always wanted to know someone named Greg so I could say this to them constantly. Alas... "And I think, uhm, the alien-nice-guy and the mom do get together." You guys make me laugh :) What a wonderful reaction.

Stick Figure Studios
>>87239506

You recall correctly. Spielberg took the #1 spot three times throughout his career: JAWS, E.T. and JURASSIC PARK

Stick Figure Studios
>>87235385

I get choked up at the weirdest parts... like when all the boys make absolutely perfect landings on their bikes. Always gets me.

Stick Figure Studios
>>87229485

That was also the trip where the two of them agreed to swap "points" on their movies being released that year: Spielberg took STAR WARS and Lucas took CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (which he thought would be the bigger hit). Spielberg has said to this day that he got the better end of the deal.

Stick Figure Studios
>>87240116

I think that implication is intentional. Spielberg clearly frames them together in every shot in the third act.

Stick Figure Studios
>>87234716

I find CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND to be a slightly less emotional but actually more spiritual.experience. ET is joyous. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS is awe-inspiring.

Prof. Writhms

Edit: My mistake. I didn't realize she reacted to Starman already.

Stick Figure Studios
>>87235153

It was my wife's first big screen movie too. She's 5 years younger than me. My first theatergoing experience was 1979's THE MUPPET MOVIE at age 7.

Patrick Gibbs

Hearing you say “penis breath” made my night 🤣😂

LMrcs

Steven and George Lucas are like 2 peas in a pod especially in the 80's so yea the Star Wars references were intentional

Prof. Writhms

Just watched the reaction! A lot of fun... ! But now I have that John Williams government/authorities theme stuck in my head. Maybe I'll play this theme the next time I fill out my tax report. 😏

Prof. Writhms

Oh, here is a fun(?) fact: Spielberg originally wanted to use M&Ms for the candy E.T. eats but the company turned him down. So they used Reese's Pieces, and the sales shot up when the movie released. Idiot M&M ad department. 😜

Steven Ashford

Had another bout with my neck, overdid it the 4th still haven’t recovered woke up at 230am and knew this had dropped. As always great reaction and you all were pleased with the movie. Wasn’t what you “thought it would be” Then I went back to sleep and had a nightmare. I dreamed I met Cassie at an Equine event that her daughter was in but Cassie was mean !!OMG I woke up sick. But Cassie’s daughter won and was on a big jumbo screen riding her horse. But her face was whited out like on Instagram 😂 phew this medicine does a number on brain sometimes!!

Ike

I am grateful you missed the decade-long “Phone Home” imitations by anyone and everyone that had to actually call home.

Stick Figure Studios

More fun E.T. trivia: for the actor playing Michael (Robert McNaughton), the moment he sees E.T. onscreen was his first time seeing E.T. in real life, so his reaction is genuine. Henry Thomas (Elliott) had already had several scenes with the alien and Robert pressed him for details but Henry wouldn't reveal anything. This was because Spielberg did something rarely done in filmmaking: he shot the film in continuity, so the children's performances were emotionally authentic.

Jay

E.T. didn't enchant me as a kid like it did with most people. I saw it not long after seeing Jurassic Park and it may have been the first time I was aware of the director going into a movie. I knew E.T. was made by the same guy who did Jurassic Park so I was very excited, but it just didn't make the same impression on my young self. I've come to appreciate it more as I've gotten older though, looking forward to watching along later:)

MikeLL
>>87236418

Yes, took me awhile to realize it must be fireworks in the background. They couldn't have had another killer thunderstorm so soon!

MikeLL

The Wonder. The Music. The Feels. I fell like I just overdosed on sugar, that was quite a lot of wholesomeness watching along with the ladies! I was extra gratified seeing Cassie recognizing the scene from the Quiet Man! I've been waiting for this ever since her Quiet Man reaction!

MikeLL
>>87236891

I really remember the Summer of '82 at the movie theater. It was mind blowing. Not just E. T., but Wrath of Khan and Poltergiest came out the same week, then E. T. the next week, then Blade Runner a couple of weeks later. Not only Tron and The Thing, but so many other films I have fond memories of like The Beastmaster, Young Doctors In Love, The World According to Garp, Rocky III, Conan The Barbarian and . . . Night Shift! "Loooove Brokers!" Such a magical summer at the movies!

David Williams

The beautiful simplicity of the story, love and friendship, makes it timeless, the music is SO amazing too, so pleased you enjoyed it Cassie and Carly

Stick Figure Studios
>>87266780

It did enchant me when I saw it in the theater at age 6, but when I became a teenager, I got a little too "hip" and "cool" for its simplicity and emotional directness. In my late 20s, I came around again and realized I was right the first time. It's brilliant

Ben Livingstone

Drew Barrymore's great-uncle was Lionel Barrymore. He played Mr. Potter in "It's a Wonderful Life."

Jay

I love that yous were half expecting cute, little E.T. to go all xenomorph and kill someone for the first 30-40 minutes😂😂. Cassie, your main man Harrison Ford had a small role as Elliot's principal, but the scene didn't make the final cut. Just two weeks after this came out, another big budget American movie about extraterrestrials was unleashed on the world. They couldn't be more different but I hope we get it in October (I'm guessing it's been requested many times). Us horror nerds are owed one after Speed won the 'scary' poll:)

Pickupthepieces76

Some mentioned already that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are good buddies, hence the easter eggs referencing each other movies. Like the Star Wars costume in ET and ET showing up in the prequels. Another fun one is that some of the hieroglyphics in Indiana Jones portray C-3PO and R2-D2.

Johnny
>>87292386

The Thing has been requested many times, so I know it's on her radar.

zynjams

I was in the Army during the 80s and never watched ET , and still havent watched it figuring its a kids movie

Ry Jo

Love this movie, if you are looking for other movies kind of like this, I would say "short circuit " and "Harry and the Henderson's" are also two other movies that are fun. Even if you dont watch them on the Channel they are worth watching

Ry Jo

also the movie Starman is good (love story and has aliens) it is also worth watching

Ry Jo

so above link is a commercial but is is E.T. 2 it is very cute and sweet worth watching

hockeywitch

PLEASE! Could you put these movies on some of your polls? 1. Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine and Donnie Darko? The first two are quirky comedies while Donnie Darko is somewhat dark and is somewhat a psychological mystery but not scary. If you could give them a chance in your polls, that would be great! Take care!

hockeywitch

PLEASE, PLEASE?! EASE! Could you put these movies on some of your polls? Maybe a poll for cult classics? LOL 1. Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine and Donnie Darko? The first two are quirky comedies while Donnie Darko is somewhat dark and is somewhat a psychological mystery but not scary. If you could give them a chance in your polls, that would be great! Take care!

Steve Mercier

This goddamn movie...it makes me cry every time. "I'll. Be. Right. Here."

London Davis

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is another must see Spielberg gem. Rewatched it recently and it still holds up. Thanks for all that you do.

TommyJ.

Cassie you didn't notice Henry Thomas who played Elliott was Samuel in Legends of the Fall.

Terry Yelmene

Thank you, Cassie and thank you, Carly. Watching the enchanted faces of the two women watching one of the most enchanting movies of all time was.... well... absolutely perfect! Reactions just don't come better than PiB for E.T! BTW, the only flaw was me thinking that these two weren't going to realize that Gurdy was a very young Drew in her first big role. It did take a while though!

Scott

Wow that bought back some memories

Wade Watts

One of my favorite reactions so far❤️🍿🛏
