Having never seen this series before, I loved the first 2 episodes and am hooked. So hard not to jump ahead to the next episodes, but I'll manage to go at your pace so I can enjoy them along with you for the first time. :)

Brent Petty

I enjoyed the chess parts, but these people are miserable human beings for the most part.

I can already tell this is gonna be one of those reaction series that I'll end up watching multiple times. Love the show, and love how much you're already into it!

Stephen Malloy

The movie they were watching was The Robe.

Thomas Schmid

It's a great show. I remember binging it in one shot when it was released.

David Woodbridge

I love this series, and I look forward to seeing the rest of your reactions to it! Regarding your question about chess openings, high level chess players do memorize chess openings, including the strongest responses to them. Chess moves that follow well-known opening theory are called book moves. They're the standard moves for a given opening. Eventually, players will deviate from the book moves, but by playing book moves during the opening, players generally secure a solid position for their pieces during the middlegame.

$5 then is roughly $50 now.

Okay, I’m hooked! I had no idea this show was this good. I learned to play chess from my grandfather when I was about 11 years old, but it seems to me that this show is still enjoyable even to those that don’t know chess. I think that’s a testament to good writing and directing. Having said that, this show DOES NOT work without this phenomenal actress Anya Taylor-Joy (Beth Harmon) and the rest of this cast. Wow! ….and yes cinematography is ridiculously inventive.

Mike Melfa

Cassie… did you notice that her last opponent (Beltik) is played by the same actor that portrayed evil Cousin Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter? He looks very different as a young man, I barely recognized him when I watched this originally.

The story was written by Walter Tevis, who also wrote The Hustler. That became a movie in the early 60s with Paul Newman in the lead. Just as you don't need to know chess to enjoy The Queen's Gambit, The Hustler is about a lot more than just pool. Martin Scorcese loved The Hustler so much that he made its sequel, The Color of Money.

Having not seen the HP series, I recognized him from the excellent movie Devil All The Time. He killed it in a supporting role in that one! He has such a unique look and makes for a good character actor in smaller roles that leave an impression.

Terry Yelmene

The trials of Beth... The compassion of Cassie... This has all the makings... Ya... This has all the makings! What Cassie doesn't understand is that the first two of the four players, Townes and Baltic, have already come onto the board.

This Witch is such a fantastic spooky movie. The atmosphere is just perfection.

Oh yeah! So good in that! I thought she was great in Soho. The girl from JoJo Rabbit was excellent in that as well!

Wes Stewart

ATJ captures that “Patrician beauty” that describes Princess Irulan in Frank Herbert’s Dune and was a top pick among fans. I do like Florence Pugh though who won the role. I’m sure either would make a great Irulan.

Great movie imo. Two actors she lines too, Tom Cruise and Paul Newman from the Sting.

Martin Skouboe

This post does a great job of crushing my hopes every time I reload the page looking for episode 3 and 4.

Scott Macaulay

If Anna Taylor Joy doesn't play an elf or a fairy in a movie it would be a crime. I made her one with AI art and it just works. Her wide set eyes really give her an ethereal quality. One of those flaws that's really a blessing.

ditto. I thought that it would be at least a weekly post. I only subbed this month for this show as I love it. Should have waited till next month so I wouldn't have to pay 28 bucks (2 months) for one show.
