Oh boy oh boy. This was a lot. I know a lot of the message and underlying themes were in there trying to teach me something but I think I was just distracted with the over the top violence, greed and horrible people-ness? Except for Lewis, TEAM LEWIS!  It had a lot of that 80's cheesiness and I can't pinpoint why sometimes I don't mind that and it feels nostalgic and sometimes I don't like it and it just feels cheesy.  Still glad to have seen a classic in the sci-fi/action realm!

Sorry for the slow uploads this week! We also had some issues with ROTK on YT, so those will come tomorrow evening. Hope you guys have a great rest of your weekend!! Thanks for sticking around!

[Full Reaction] Robocop (1987)

Comments

Jonathan Hall

I enjoyed the reaction and I prefer an honest opinion even if you don't like it. It makes the ones you actually do like much more special.

Stephen

I first watched this when I was 11 or 12 years old, and it's been one of my all-time favorites ever since, I've watched it countless times, and I enjoyed seeing your first experience with it.

Night King01

The over the top violence is very much one of the most satirical elements in its criticism of action movies at the time being overly violent, funny enough the movie was correct because people loved the over the top violence

brooke atkins

Haven’t watched this reaction yet but I think I already know how this is gonna go lol Im not a fan of this movie myself. Just saw it a couple years ago and thought eh that was kinda a bad movie but only in my opinion. I knew a lot of people like it. Maybe I’ll watch this reaction one day when I’m bored at home. Can’t wait to see what’s coming next week. It’s been awhile since I watched one of your reactions Cassie. Just not much lately I’ve been interested in but I’m patiently waiting for a great one to pop up. Have a great weekend Cassie and all!!

Brian McGovern

POSSEIBLE SPOLIER ALERTI suspected this would be a tough one for you. It is over the top violence, but I felt it was necessary at the start for Murthy’s fate since you don’t get to spend much time with him at the start, so you need to sympathise for him and what he ended up losing. The director is not one for shying away from violence or sex. He is Dutch and was raised during the Second World War and saw his country being bombed by German forces, so his early life has shaped his cinematic world. I still love his movies and miss his voice in mainstream cinema. He has gone back to making movies back in Europe now. He made 6 American movies: Robocop was his first, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Hollow Man, Starship Troopers, Showgirls.

Night King01

It’s very much a satire. It’s intentional that in the boardroom scene they immediately forget about the body and talk about loss of profits. It’s a satire of corporate America. And also the director has come out and said this is a Jesus story in its main characters arc with the whole crucifiction of Murphy by boddicker and his resurrection as Robocop. If you look at the scene again when Robocop saves Lewis towards the end he even walks on water. The director confirmed it as well.

Andrew Ramos

Finally got this one out of the way. Upward and onward

Patrick Gibbs

I’ll buy that [reaction] for a dollar!

Dustin Nelson

The violence is to underline the frailty of humanity iirc

Jay SMARTASS

Hey Cassie I got an idea for ya, how about a poll for True story movie/documentary reactions? My pick would be for the documentary movie "Tread" about the 2004 "Killdozer" incident. I think you and Carly would luv those 🤗

Andrew Rose

If you're looking for some redeeming 80's cheesiness you should really watch 16 Candles!!

Just Plain Bob

I’ll take ‘80s cheese over 2020’s sanctimony any day.

Philip Alan

Dick: "The city will be full of drugs, gambling & prostitution!" Cassie: "Oh, Joy!" hahahaha!!

Night King01

Speaking about Lewis being ok at the end. They had a scene originally where the end would be a news update again with Lewis being in it. Director Paul Verhoeven felt it was better to end it with Murphy giving his name because the ark came full circle and people cheered at the test screenings the most at that scene.

djKENTO

After this reaction… you know what… I think Cassie would actually prefer the remake of Robocop from 2014. It’s definitely a flawed and unnecessary film, but I do really like the fact that they deal with Murphy’s family and what that would be like… Here’s hoping we get Starship Troopers this year.

Yaisu

Is this the director's cut or theatrical?

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Great reaction as always, Cassie. Now you've seen "Robocop". Growing up in the 80's, watching it on VHS was a profound and out-of-this world experience. I personally think it still holds up pretty well to this day. I can't remember how many times I've watched it as a teenager and as an adult. One of my all-time favorites. So much work and dedication went into making this movie. Unlike some of today's flicks, the violence here serves the story. Although it wasn't your cup of tea, it still got you engaged and that's a testament to how good of a movie it really is. The depiction of the future in the 80's is nowadays referred to as "retro future", and Robocop embodies this concept to its fullest. Thanks again; I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this classic gem. Along with "Die Hard", "Aliens", and "Ghostbusters", it is included as one of those movies that made us (Netflix series).

Lana Gorgeous

Great movie, it portrayed some of the seedy parts of American society. but then again you don't live in the worst parts of urban America, places like Baltimore or Philadelphia or Memphis, where crime is rampant and governmental institutions such as the Baltimore police force that has a terrible history of corruption. Violence isn't exaggerated if it is realistic. Unfortunately there are some areas in American and Mexico and around the world that are extremely violent and corrupt and this movie was a metaphor.

Shawn Kildal

I had very little doubt on how Cassie would feel about this movie. Violence and gore were way over the top, but that's how the director wanted it. Most of it was filmed here in Dallas. A Nancy Allen movie I think Cassie would enjoy more is Blow Out with John Travolta and directed by her then husband Brian DePalma.

Todzilla

Cassie! This was 18 months and counting for me to see you react to this film! So glad you wore your baby blue Robocop shirt 💙 Of course I wish you would have liked it more, but that's what makes you, you. There was a deleted scene where they show Anne Lewis recovering in the hospital so she did live. Or, you know you could watch Robocop 2 where you see more of Lewis' and Murphy's relationship 😉

Dioskur

Cassie noone takes offence if you dislike this movie :) I'm born 1980 so when I was a young boy and we tried to watch "the craziest sickest movies" this one was on the list. And yeah we liked it somewhat but even at that time everyone knew it was trash. But trash in a somewhat positive way. I don't think it is a good movie. It has way too many flaws. But it impacted pop culture and it was a huge topic so It is one of the all-time classics. You watched it, you didn't like it, like most people. BTW be glad you didn't watch Robocop2, and you never should! It is INSANELY cruel. They show people in so much pain and suffering... you can't have any empathy in you AND enjoy it. As a kid I didn't understand how evil it was, but when I watched it later on it was realy bad!

Ben Livingstone

Really apt satire on the dangers of privatizing essential services (among other meanings). Really got me laughing a few times!

Todzilla

On a side note: those of us who've seen Robocop BEFORE "That 70s Show" had much more fear of "Red Foreman" than those who didn't.

Darren Gibson

Ha! Indeed. Kurtwood Smith will always be Clarence "can you fly Bobby?" Boddicker to me. I can't disassociate him from that role. He is so good at being thoroughly nasty. The dipping his fingers in the wine and the spitting blood at the precinct scenes are two bits of genius in a Fantastic performance.

Todzilla

That precinct scene is one of my favorites! Robocop says "book em" and they say what's the charge? "He's a cop killer" 🎤👇..

Darren Gibson

I like this comment. "That's what makes you, you" is spot on. There will be a lot of us here who love Robocop and who don't mind one jot that you didn't like it Cassie and who absolutely expected you not to, and in a way we kinda like that you didn't because we expected it because have come to know you so well now. We love that you watched it though 🙌

Stick Figure Studios

@Shawn: I also live in Dallas. I recognize Reunion Tower (which is very close to where I work) and other landmarks in certain shots.

Mike Lemon

Cassie's shock and then smile when the guy got shot in the junk is kind of terrifying, but weirdly wholesome.

Ike

Although this is a classic of the 80’s dystopian genre, I’m still baffled that this was on the list. I can appreciate the desire from some of wanting to push you beyond a particular comfort zone, but when the boundaries of that zone was the Great Circle of RomCom only a few years ago, it’s hard to know where those frayed edges of “too much” reside - even though I think you can handle anything. Kudos for checking this off the list like a Boss tho!

Biggman83

I’ll watch this later on. I love Robocop as a character and grew up with the toys and cartoons that spawned off the back of the franchise in the late 80s, early 90s. I thought you might find it a hard watch, but I’m happy you ticked it off the list!

Walter

She should absolutely never watch The Exorcist. A fantastic, classic movie, but the poster child for all things she does not enjoy.

Walter

I love this movie, but I would never have picked it for Cassie to watch. I have tremendous respect for the way she will go out of her comfort zone with films like these. Thank you for another great reaction!

Damon

And the sequel was filmed in Houston. I worked in downtown Houston at the time and it was interesting to see the sets and areas where they filmed.

John Cranberry

When the guy in the boardroom got shot 100 times by the rogue Bot, I cracked up laughing because Cassie was like "oh my gosh" She really had no idea about the violence. Typical for the 80's babe.

Richard Maurer

Everybody "knew" she wouldn't like 300 either, which of course she did like. So don't pat yourself the on the back too hard.

Yaisu

Thank you. That's the version I have. Was worried it was another dances with wolves scenario for me lol

James1035

I enjoy this movie, but totally understand why you wouldn’t. Action movie violence has never been an issue for me. In fact I miss the over the top, violent action movies from the 80’s and 90’s.

Jesse K Kirk

Paul Verhoeven relocated from Amsterdam in the early 80's to become a big time Hollywood movie director, but he experienced some pretty severe culture shock. American gun culture, violent movies, television, gigantic corporations, tv commercials, and even our news was truly shocking to him, and when he directed Robocop he did not hold back. He threw it all in there and that is what made Robocop the glorious masterpiece that it is.

PickettsChargingPort

ROBOCOP???? We voted to have her watch ROBOCOP?? Wow. We suck. She's gonna throw up and hate us.

Dave

Ok, onward and upward! Glad to see "The Right Stuff" next on your schedule. Kudos for making it through this one.

JL_83

Robocop? That takes me back…must say I’m very surprised to see this one on the list though

Greg S.

FYI this isn't available on any subscription-based streaming service in the US. Can only rent or buy here, so better pony up the dough or hope you already own it if you want to follow along for the whole movie.

Rick Williams

I agree. Over the top in violence and gore.

RJ MacReady

Hahaha this was excellent, thank you Cassie!

Just Plain Bob

I’m not usually a fan of filmmakers inserting politics into their movies. If I want politics, I’ll watch a Presidential debate. But Robocop is a perfect example of the exception to that rule. The satire is perfectly incorporated into the movie and becomes that special extra ingredient that makes an otherwise average sci-if action film into a great movie. George Romero was also very successful at incorporating his political worldview into his Dead movies (the original trilogy, at least; after that it got a bit heavy handed).

Catherine LW

Blech. Saw it once, never again.

Art of Free Speech

For some reason, there are some in here who vote for films even knowing full well Cassie won't enjoy them. It's especially disturbing when it's a sequel to a film where she didn't like the FIRST one, so why on earth vote for her to see the second? Ugh... oh well.

brooke atkins

I kinda figured she would e reacted to that a long time ago. Im patiently waiting for John Hughes films to make their return to the channel.

Richard Maurer

Yes, we should only vote for movies we're sure Cassie will love, won't that make for fun reactions! Seriously, If we followed that advise we would have never got that great 300 reaction, for example.

James Payne

Yeah. We should have had her watch something like The Last Starfighter or Galaxy Quest

Stick Figure Studios

I was hopeful that you might end up enjoying ROBOCOP but I admit I was not optimistic. It is certainly a very bleak movie that depicts a dystopian society consumed by crime and greed (and, unfortunately, very prescient for its time on many topics including the out-of-control corporatization of American culture and the militarization of the police) with a pitch black sense of humor and cynical tone, but it is all so over the top and exaggerated that I find It comes off as pretty comical (and that includes the gory ultraviolence). What was so brilliant about ROBOCOP was that it took what could have been a schlocky, B-movie conceit, but through intelligence, wit, panache and top-shelf production values (that Phil Tippett stop-motion animation is spectacular and that Rob Bottin-designed Robocop suit -- that Peter Weller had a very difficult time moving in -- is still an incredible creation) elevated it to the level of art and that goes down to the vision of its insane genius director Paul Verhoven who saw it as not just an exhilarating sci-fi action thriller/comic book movie but as a hilarious dark comedy, cultural satire, existential drama and even a religious metaphor (with Murphy's death, resurrection, dual nature and eventual "walking on water" being inspired by Jesus). Ultimately, like all films, it's not gonna be for everyone and that's fine, but as always I am glad you are open to watching movies that aren't necessarily your cup of tea... including such classics as this blockbuster masterpiece, truly one of the best films of the 1980s.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, all us fans of the film were obviously interested in her reaction to that boardroom meeting (which was and is a very funny scene).

Hannah Mather

This and the Terminator movies are equally on my "just plain BAD" list, for many of the same reasons. But I agree at least on the "glad to have seen a classic" point. Thats really the only reason to sit through them. I truly think these are a had to be there type experience

Roger Wayne Alms

I knew this was not a movie for you or your sister. I don't like all the gore either. Without all the gore it was a good movie. So, I want to take another opportunity to suggest two action movies with love stories that I know you and your sister would love. Shining Through and Timeline with Timeline having two love stories incorporated. Shining Through is a WW II spy movie with the heroine as the main character. Timeline has time travel and one love story across time as well as an epic battle scene without much blood. Please consider them for this coming year. Thanks.

David Crabtree

This is the beauty of all films being subjective. It's all personal taste and opinion. Not everything is for everyone, nor should it be. I've adored this movie since I was like 8. But I loved this reaction, and it's pretty much the reaction I expected.

Mike LL

Oh, this movie absolutely did not "expand her boundaries" as some like to say. It was clearly beyond her boundaries. But she was not as uncomfortable as during something like District 9, had sympathy for the cops and hated the bad guys. In other words, she reacted, and it is a very entertaining reaction.

'Pappy' Johnston

I actually remember going to see this movie in the theater back in the day. LOL The cute little scrinchy-face-wrinkled-nose thing throughout! Reminged me of a thing one of my daughters used to do when she was little and didn't want to eat her peas! LOL Just ADORABLE!

Odd Thomas

I'm guessing this is 2 hours of Cassie going 'Ew, WHY?'

Mike LL

We absolutely never voted for RoboCop. Cassie watched it because it was one of her most requested films. It was a Christmas present from her to some of us.

Bill Hayden

I was hoping this was "The Right Stuff" reaction. "Who's the best pilot you ever saw"?

Bridget

@Popcorn In Bed, "Berry Gordy`s `The Last Dragon'(1985)!!!"

Grad

Next up, Starship Troopers?

Rick Williams

Good reaction to a difficult movie for you. They actually did two more of these movies and a TV series.

Richard Bourne

Huge amounts of violence, which go from scary to stupid at the end. This is a total gun nerd movie, all the great guns of the time where in there. Many at the time probably didn't realize the giant rifle cannon was real, it is a Barrett M82. RoboCop's gun was a highly modified Berretta 93R. Here are the guns in this movie... https://www.imfdb.org/wiki/RoboCop_%281987%29

Richard Bourne

Classic ending... "Dick, you're fired!" ... "Thank you." Dick didn't plan for that contingency.

Kyle Brandon Sanger

I'm sorry to say this Cassie but you'll likely going to be roasted because of your response. IMO it is okay that you didn't like it but please understand that this is an iconic film from the 80s. Although with your response I'll give you points due to picking up on the topic of satire.

Todzilla

I've been reading through all the comments and I'm still perplexed by the "gore" comments 🤷 Cassie has watched many more gory films than Robocop. Saving private Ryan and the Pacific has much more worse Gore. 300 alone had more limbs and stabbings than 100 Robocop films. She watched Prey which makes Robocop look like Toy Story. Cassie's seen John Wick, how many people were killed by gunfire in that film?🤷 I just think Robocop gets a bad rap when it comes to Gore. Maybe by 1987 standards it was gory, but by they standards today and out of the films she has seen, this was pretty mediocre.

Brian McGovern

I am not going to provide advice on what movies she should or should not watch anymore ( except on this and a few other movies). Did that before with FMJ and that comments section really turned into a s%#t show. People did not understand what I was trying to do. Having said that, I don’t think you can’t compare Robocop ultra violence with the horror aspects of The Exorcist. They are 2 different movies. The things that happen in The Exorcist are pro longed over the entire running time and they are happening to a 12 year old child. That is something that will upset Cassie to no end, and it is one of a few movies that I will always advise her never to watch. She has already said it will never happen, so I would suggest that people should give up suggesting it.

Gábor Árki

I haven't seen this movie in ages. Despite appreciating it, it just somehow never fully worked for me to make it into my favorites. Originally, I expected Murphy's story arc might be enough to counterbalance the gruesome violence for Cassie, but I admit I kind of forgot how graphic this movie is, especially the director's cut. After reading Cassie's post-game comments I was a bit worried about the reaction, but now finishing it and thinking about it, I think this is kind of among the reactions the creators were aiming for. It is depicting a very bleak and dystopian "future" without any redeeming qualities. Apart from Murphy and Lewis, basically all other characters are just despicable. Yet even after 35 years it still has some relevant messages to make you think about on numerous topics: the power and influence of big corporations and corporate greed, crime and gun violence, privatization of public services, militarization of police, etc. Paul Verhoeven definitely has his own unique style that is recognizable in most of his work. If I would have to recommend other movies from him, I think I would suggest the following two to continue with: Starship Troopers (1997) Probably my favorite Verhoeven film. I think this would be an easier watch for Cassie. Still has graphic violence and gore, but overall it would be a more relatable/enjoyable story for her. Black Book (2006) A more traditional movie from him, but still with violence, gore and nudity. It is a WW2 story about a Jewish singer infiltrating a Gestapo headquarters for the Dutch resistance in the Nazi occupied Netherlands. Often credited to be among the best Dutch movies. Could be a good candidate to include if there will be a foreign movie poll.

Cole Jennett

Maybe your definition of “gory” is different then others? Gory to me is the excessive amount of bullets the guy in the board room took from the giant robot, or when Murphy is “killed”. Saving Private Ryan and the Pacific were depicting real life. How was Prey worse then Robocop? John Wick has way more killings but “one shot” deaths are not gory, imo. I just think you have blinders on for Robocop

Todzilla

Violent Gore in real life such as in war movies should be even more offensive. The majority of the kills in Robocop we're one shot kills like in the warehouse scene. Prey had scenes where the predator killed several of the trappers in various gory ways. Robocop in by no means is a perfect film, but to say it is more gory than anything Cassie has seen just isn't a true statement.

Cole Jennett

I didn’t say it was more gory then anything she has seen🤷‍♂️. Some of the October movies she’s watched were more gory imo

Mike Lemon

Keep it up. Maybe some day you'll get The Last Dragon, Björn will get that movie he is always pushing (I can't believe I'm blanking on the name), and I'll get Indictment: The McMartin Trial. If we're lucky she'll watch them just to shut us up. :-)

Coleton B.

CJ, I think you have blinders on for any/every movie you don't like or agree with. SPR and PREY were DEFINITELY gorier than Robocop. Less than 2 onscreen minutes of blood VS. Saving Private Ryan? That's blinders, my friend. No offense.

Brian Jones

I've said it before and I'll say it again, out of all the reactors out there Cassie's following is easily the most parasocial of the bunch. Not only is it kind of ridiculous at times, but it's downright creepy at others. Many people not even treating her like an adult and acting like gatekeepers or handlers with kid gloves. Truly the weirdest thing I've ever seen. You want a really entertaining read, go back through the comment section for Full Metal Jacket. Talk about some insanity....lol

Godzilla Jones

RoboCop is fun and all but it's not for everyone. For something great from the same actor, you gotta see Buckaroo Banzai. You'd love Buckaroo Banzai.

Greg S.

Yes, it's wrong. I have Paramount+ with Showtime add-on and it's not on either of them. I reported the error on JustWatch.

Sindre Kristiansen

Thank you, Cassie for reacting to this. Despite it not being your cup of tea I think you did a wonderful open-minded reaction to it. Although I did grow up watching this and still enjoy it, I think it's really nice to see a new perspective through "reaction eyes". I was hesitant to watch this as Robocop has a nostalgic and childhood reminiscent feel for me (I was way too young when I first saw this). However, the big "fear" often lies in that we often identify with what we like and have a personal and emotional connection to. Thus when people either dislike or do not find it to their taste it's easy to subconsciously take it personal. But once self awareness kicks in it's easier to appreciate the effort of other people having different opinions and taste. It's actually quite refreshing as you learn more about people. Which is beautiful in its own right! Challenging yourself to go out of your comfort zone is commendable and something I think we all ought to do more often. We don't have to enjoy everything, but I really like that you respect the variety of genres and pop culture classics. I actually love romantic comedies, action, drama, arthouse etc. Genre is less important as long as the story is well made and has a good heart. The art of storytelling can be quite remarkable. Thank you once again for posting this and for sharing with us your thoughts and sincerity. Wishing you a positive 2023! <3

Coleton B.

Totally agree, Brian. Like what is the point of all this "No, see you were wrong, she didn't like it. Why did you think she'd like it. Why. Tell me why you thought she'd like it". It's absolutely exhausting.

kaiielle

Brian, you have described that better than I could. I fully agree with you.

JC762

StArship troopers and total recall now… might as well get through them. 🤷‍♂️

Avastrasza

Starship Troopers and Total Recall have the violence and "gore" as well, but less than Robocop I believe. Starship Troopers was my fave movie growing up. About RoboCop, I loved RoboCop when I was growing up. Though I found the gorey scenes tough to watch, I mostly watched the cartoon (Yes, they made a cartoon out of this) and tv series which were much more tame. The movie also got a remake about 5 years ago. That one follows the same story mostly, but it has more what you wanted to see. If you want to see a version of RoboCop where there is no gore and its more about the story and wanting to see Murphy come back to his family and such, the remake might be right up your alley. But since it was much more tame, the remake didn't do that well and they tried to make it too cool or slick in a way with a shiny black suit. :P

Avastrasza

I'd buy that for a dollar! Galaxy Quest is great, if you know Star Trek. :P You'd miss a lot of jokes if you dont know Star Trek i.m.o.

Avastrasza

I miss the ultra violence satire. I mean, you get it in some horror movies now. Upgrade, Evil Dead (2013), Ready or Not, and so on. But good action movies? It's been a while. I think Atomic Blonde was the last really good action flick I watched of that 80's caliber. The rest is very tame and takes itself either to serious, or not serious at all like the Fast and the Furious movies.

Björn Karlsson

(Oh noo, it's him again 🫣) Hmmm you are from Norway right?? Crazy swede here 😬😬😬 Maybe you can help me with my project that will make Cassie to take a biiiiig step out of her Comfort zone? Do you have popcorn request?? 🤔

Godzilla Jones

Agree to disagree. It's a great flick with a great cast with clear heroes and villains, a cute little love story, and a nice happy ending. It's silly sci-fi super hero fun.

Colin Gutierrez

It looks like she watched the director's cut, which is mostly just extra gore that had to be cut out of the theatrical release to avoid an NC-17 rating.

Bridget

@Colin Gutierrez, @Tim Raths, @Mike Lemon, "Maybe Cassie will react too all our requests, Eventually!!!"

Diiirk706

This movie is still *phenomenal* and SO Fkn important!!

Jason Dolan

Woohoo Britta is watching Rowboatcop!

Richard Maurer

@Brian - Agree, but I have to say some of Ashleigh Burton's patrons are close to being just as bad, In fact I'd say that creepy faction you're talking can be found in every reactor's patreon comment section, or the female ones anyway. The jealousy that sometimes occurs can be creepy too. I'm talking about several occasions where reactors (including Cassie) have responded positively to my posts, only to have commenters attack and try to discredit said post it the most nitpicking way possible to the point that jealousy became my only reasonable conclusion as to why I was being attacked.

Jon Jon the Milkshake Man

The 80s was my favorite decade to be alive. That being said; you can say this movie looked amazing, but it never looked real. That was one of the things I didn't like about movies when I was a kid, they always pushed the special effects way too far in the 80s (not just the 80s but film makers seemed particularly delusional about their capabilities at the time) and it looked as fake then as it does now. Maybe they made it SO bad as a joke and I'm not in on it.

Richard Maurer

The only thing worse than the people who are sure a reactor won't (or will) like a movie is all the self-congratulations afterward when they happen to get one right.

MatthewBrown74m

Now you have to watch total recall and starship troopers lol

nick bell

Clarence was a favorite villain of mine growing up. Every line of his was a classic. Such fun movie. Verhovens view of America back then was wild.

Brian Jones

@Richard Maurer - I can't speak to Ashleigh as I'm not personally a patron of hers and have only seen a few YouTube vids, but I certainly see some of it with Nat's channel, as well as Mary. It just seems far more predominate here. I just thought this was supposed to be about a love for a variety of film, and the joy of seeing someone reacting to it (positively or negatively) for the first time. Although I do notice there isn't nearly as much of it on You, Me, & The Movies. Maybe because her husband actually joins her for the reactions. But it's not like Cassie, Nat, Mary, and even Ashleigh (if I remember correctly) don't make it perfectly clear they are married and in some cases have children. So I guess I just don't quite get the possessiveness factor, or what people think they're going to gain with the whole white knighting/gatekeeping thing. Just seems really weird to me. But, enough on that. Even discussing it is kind of strange and uncomfortable. I guess the internet does tend bring out all sorts, and maybe I'm just too long in the tooth to understand the behavior.

Robert da Spruce

I was curious how you would feel about this movie when you announced it earlier Cassie. I was concerned about the graphic nature of the film. On the other hand, you seemed to do pretty well with some of the movies with very graphic violence that you reacted to lately. Like 300 and District 9. I actually thought you were becoming “Battle hardened” to explicit violence. You rarely covered your eyes during those films. Much less than your earlier reactions. I thought you were in danger of becoming a badass. I’m sorry, forgive my language. As you and Carly like to say, “B.A.” 😉 Your reaction is about what I expected. I didn’t really think this would be one of your favorites. But, you gave it the old college try. Personally, I remember liking it quite a lot when I saw it in my youth. But it hasn’t aged very well IMO. Effects are pretty dated. And the jokes aren’t as funny as I remember. Oh well. Looking forward to the Right Stuff.

Craig Russell

Don't feel bad, I wasn't crazy about it when it came out andit's now in my top 5 worst films ever made.

granny_goodness

You really need to watch more movies if this 80's masterpiece is in your top 5 worst lol. Also, only someone who's never seen any episode of MST3K could possibly come to this conclusion.

Robert Haynes

What are the other 4? It sounds like you and I have opposite tastes, so there might be some good stuff for me to watch in there.

Jason Chirevas

Didn’t like ROBOCOP? DEFinitely gotta watch TOTAL RECALL and STARSHIP TROOPERS now fer sher. You guys never change…

Richard Maurer

@Charles - that's your opinion and not one I agree with. Robocop is slightly better than Terminator.

Richard Maurer

The fact that a lot of conservatives love that movie and totally miss the point amuses me to this day. In fact one of those conservatives is a friend of mine.

Yann Laliberté

"Are they gonna fall in love?".... Wrong movie!

Richard Maurer

@ Brian - totally agree. I thought about mentioning a specific creepy post I once read (and called creepy in a response) but maybe it's better to just let it go.

Richard Maurer

You mean recommend good movies for Cassie to watch? I hope no one changes that, I know I won't.

Richard Maurer

Funny thing is I've always considered Robocop the least cheesy 80's movie, considering that any cheese in it is purely intentional. This movie in fact is a satire of general cheesiness of all things 80's.

Sindre Kristiansen

Can’t say I’m particularly in favor of ‘making’ anyone going out of their comfort zone. It’s a choice they themselves should decide. I’m only here for the reactions. 🙂

Björn Karlsson

Well you mentioned comfort zone. 🙂 Nevermind 🙂 I'm trying to get Cassie to react to a swedish movie - "Fcuking Åmål" from 1998. It was a success in Norway as well back in the days. Promoting a swedish movie here on Patreon is not an easy task 😬😬😜🫨🫨

nick bell

Wow. Lots of comments gone.

Mike LL

Film makers have always made comments on society at large. Especially in sci-fi. See (the original TV) Star Trek, Planet of the Apes 68, even District 9. Even just regular dramas (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, the upcoming to this channel Selma). That is very different from "inserting politics into their movies".

Just Plain Bob

Yes it is. Which is why I made the distinction with movies such as Robocop and Romero’s Dead film. Perhaps I should have used the word “overtly” before “inserting politics.” If I feel as though I’m being preached to, I’m done with that film.

Popcorn In Bed

Hmm, from this post? I don't delete any comments on Patreon so if they are removed it must be from those that posted it?

Eric Wallace

Knowing this is commentary and satire going in would have been good for your viewing i think. Same if you ever watch starship troopers

Is this one of my favorite movies? Yes. But I'm old. Paul Verhoeven (Director) has a style all his own. One of the things you mentioned were (1) I'd buy that for a dollar, and (2) The Satellite that killed over 100 people in Santa Barbara. The "I'd buy that for a dollar" was a mention to a fictional reality/game show show playing on the TVs throughout the movie. The news segment about the satellite that killed over 100 in Santa Barbara referenced "two ex presidents retired in the area", which would insinuate that this was not a random accident. Both have noting to do with the plot of the movie, but like the "Nuke EM" game, just emphasize the dire state of the world and how in the future, morality becomes blurred, hence Detroit makes a robot/human hybrid. Paul Verhoeven blurs these same lines, and using commercials and propaganda in the same way as Eric's movie reference above, Starship Troopers, another great film.

Philip Alan

I believe every movie that's not a romantic comedy is a biiiiiig step outside her comfort zone. And I'm here for every morsel. Just saying. :)

Patreon has lost posts of mine as well - I think its from how they have it programmed. I didnt think you would like this one either,... I did enjoy it when I was younger, but even then - the graphics were trash,... and I think one reason there was so much gore in the late 70's-80's was that CGI was really just getting worked on and the special effects people were all trying to outdo each other and make things bigger, "better", gorier,... in every way,... I would never say this was a great movie,... and while I did enjoy Starship troopers - I thought the book was MUCH better,... that movie is satire as well. I mention this only because so many people talked about it in other posts.

Shawn Kildal

@Robert, you're right about the ending. When I first saw it I was crushed but I still kept my appreciation for it. Cassie probably won't feel the same but I think she'd have a memorable reaction to the movie as a whole though

Larry Darrell

I thought I heard Cassie call Miguel Ferrer's character Bob Morton a "D" Word at one point. When it was over I played that part back. She called him a "Dink." I had a pretty good laugh at that. Thanks Cassie.

Shawn Kildal

I saw Robocop a dozen or so times growing up and loved it, I didn't think Cassie would feel the same way about it that you and I did, but at least she did go in with an open mind, sporting a cool T-shirt giving it a chance. I wished she would have liked it more as well but that's okay too.

Richard Maurer

You know what irritates me about people in the comments section? if you guessed "a lot" you would be correct, but I'm going to mention one specific thing now. That is, the cowardly people who delete their comments when someone proves them wrong or even just get a lot of negative feedback. The only good reasons to delete a comment are if you made a defamatory statement or if the comment is a spoiler. I would also say if you have just posted a comment and you want to take it back it's okay to delete, as long as no one has commented already, I've done this several times myself. But if someone proves you wrong just admit you were wrong and move on - I've done this, the two times I was actually proven wrong. And if it's something that is a matter of opinion that a number people disagree with, either stand your ground or just let go and move on. But when I see a deleted comment with several comments listed under it, I will admit I assume that you probably just wimped out. If you did happen to delete a comment because of a defamatory statement or a spoiler you might want to make a new post explaining that if you don't want people to judge you.

Björn Karlsson

A swedish movie is definitely outside her comfort zone. 😄 Even if it's kind of a love story 😀

Wolf

Dunno who convinced her to watch robo cop but could you please come convince the lotto feller i did win the lottery. ty

Larry Darrell

Now that everybody’s had fun with Robocop. Who’s ready for The Thing (1982). Perfect Winter movie for when you get snowed in. Amma Right?

Richard Maurer

You're just asking for the White Knight Chorus to sing their favorite song 'It's too much for Cassie'.

Larry Darrell

Nahhhh. We’re past all that. ;) Honestly though, Perfect Winter film. (Words coming from someone who is not a huge fan of Robocop, by the way. I get it, but it never was my thing. The Thing is my thing, thing, thing, thing….)

Richard Maurer

I get it, I'd love for Cassie to watch The Thing. But you know the push back will be enormous. Maybe for Halloween?

Shawn Kildal

The Thing is actually is a possibility. It's in Planner's request app somewhere in the top 50 and Cassie is doing a drawing in that top 50. Usually, she draws around 5 movies and then does a poll of which one to watch.

Shawn Kildal

Total Recall was a great movie, Starship Troopers, at least for me, is a hard pass

Jason Chirevas

I’m not arguing the merits of either movie. Cassie made it clear she doesn’t enjoy Verhoeven’s sensibility in her ROBOCOP comments. So here, as usual, comes the “OK, you didn’t like that but you’ll LOVE this because -I- like it” crowd. That’s clockwork here. I love ROBOCOP. But now that I know Cassie doesn’t and why, I’m not going to waste both our time recommending similarly made and themed movies from the same director. There‘s way too much still out there to explore.

Larry Darrell

About the Planner app, earlier this year I was doing my derndest to keep it in the Top 50. It was skirting right on the edge. Now its safe in the Middle. When or If Cassie decides to Watch The Thing or She pulls it for a poll, I feel pretty good about her "Surviving" it. I've said before, my opinion is, its not as bad (scary/gory) as people make it out to be. Cassie has spent 2 Halloweens in the trenches and watched Predator, Poltergeist, Robocop and a number of graphic War films in her Dwell time. She's getting to be a seasoned Veteran by now. I'm Confident She's Ready. Carly on the other hand, is going to need a completely different Training Regimen. :->

Richard Maurer

I certainly think Cassie can handle The Thing. Unfortunately there are a lot of people here who don't think she will be able to handle the slightest bit of violence or gore, no matter how many times she proves them wrong. I'm just saying that no matter how The Thing comes up for viewing don't be surprised when certain people try to convince her not to watch it.

Richard Maurer

Just because she didn't like Robocop, you jump to to the conclusion that Cassie will hate Starship Troopers and Total Recall? First of all you don't know that - to use a recent example a lot people claimed she would hate 300, but she in fact liked it. Second, even if she doesn't like them, so what? I'd rather see her watch something challenging that she might, or might not, hate than some cute little movie that, while she's sure to like it, won't really be meaningful in any way. Stop trying to make people feel like they can only suggest movies we're sure that Cassie will love, because it's just not happening.

Jason Chirevas

It’s difficult to tell whether you just can’t help yourself with straw-man arguments or you legitimately can’t grasp what people say to you in these encounters. Pointless to respond further in either case, I suppose. 🤷‍♂️

BRT

WOOOOO!!!HAHAHA!!! Cassie You're a trooper!!! Robocop 2 is almost better...I think, if I remember right. More movies that I haven't seen in over 20 years, so it all kinda runs together.

BRT

She did Alien and Aliens. If she can handle those she can handle The Thing

Richard Maurer

Lol, don't hurt yourself patting your back about how great your arguments are. Not as great as you think. Do I think Cassie will like Starship Troopers or Total Recall - I don't know for sure, but neither do you, no matter how much you think you're in tune with Cassie. It doesn't really matter to me as I'd like for her to watch those movies, then let the chips fall where they may. Hopefully you can grasp what I'm saying in this encounter.

Nathan Bishop

I wasn't patting myself on the back. But when I do pat myself on the back, I'll be sure to let you know. And I'll be patting myself on the back as hard as I want.

Nathan Bishop

I bet people deleted their comments simply because they didn't want to talk to you anymore. You are being hostile and condescending with your replies to other people's posts.

Richard Maurer

If anybody deleted their comments because of my "attitude" it just goes to prove my point - this is the internet, grow a spine and stand up for yourself if you think you're right. And if you're wrong, admit it and people will respect you for it.. Also I wasn't necessarily talking about comments I had even replied to, And by the way if you think my comments here were hostile and condescending you should stay away from Youtube comments sections. I personally think I'm generally pretty easy going here, but I do get a little annoyed sometimes - with good reason.

Richard Maurer

lol. Take it easy, nobody is coming at you. If you read your op without any context you could see where it sounds a bit self-congratulatory.

Jason Mangen

Typical Paul Verhoven directed movie. Campy violence

Wolf

OH OH AHAHAHAHAAAAAHAAAHHA OH OH WHAT A REACTION! IT WAS LIKE WATCHING SOMEONE GETTING MUGGED FOR AN HOUR AND 30 MINUTES!!! Oh wow lmbo. That had to be in caps because her reaction when the "mugging" finally stopped was just so funny. Oh wow. I love that movie but there is bout 500 movies you shoulda watched before watching that. Geese people you gotta spoon feed the new movie fans. not smack them in the back of the head with a pick axe. Let me guess Natural born killers would be the next rec. NOT!!!! srsly do not watch that movie yet. you aint ready. and prolly never will be. Now i feel bad for laughing : ( "Bad Llama". oknotreallyahahaha. Oops. sorry. ~snicker~ stopit!
