Ok can't stop thinking about this show since I watched it! If you have watched this before, did you binge it or take breaks? I like that it's detective work - like CSI kind of stuff - but with these two amazing actors. It's pretty heavy and pretty dark for sure but one I need to know what happens! Hope you enjoy the first 2 epi's!

Another great series is Justified with Tim Olyphant

AdrianF

Just a heads up for anyone watching this in the EU - HBO's streaming offering does not line up with Cassie's reaction. There's a few like this on PiB. However, the Blu Rays of Season 1 (I bought the UK one) match perfectly. Not tried UK iTunes version although I have it on there as well.

Clay F

Is excellent acting. My grandfather grew sugar cane in SE Texas near the Lousiana border, about an hour drive from Lake Charles. Marty: "She stuck her finger up my ass. Ruined me. Now I can't go without it."

Season 2 is excellent. Not as good as season one but awesome performances by Rachel McAdams and Colin Farrell. Rachel McAdams is raw -- excellent acting not just another pretty face. For me, season 2 is better than season 3.

Choof

Says it's still processing but worth the wait I'm sure, so excited for this

Matt

Watched it when it came out week to week but definitely could have binge watch it, amazing show for sure

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I had to binge this show, I had to know lol, it's dark and tragic but I'm a sucker for mysteries and true crime stuff, and McConaughey and Harrelson are truly awesome in this, Michelle Monaghan too.

Choof

For me the best seasons of a show ever are: The Wire (season 4, also my favorite TV show ever), Mad Men season 4, Breaking Bad season 4, Game of Thrones season 3

Riley

BINGED!!

nick bell

Watched it as it aired. Waiting a week was not easy

Brian Jones

Binged the hell out of this show (found out about it after the first season had already aired). And loved every minute of it. :)

Nathan Bishop

One of my favorite shows is Twin Peaks, which you might enjoy. It has a quirky FBI agent who goes to a small mountain town to solve a murder. It has a lot of unusual elements, though. I would say it's a mix between X-Files and a parody of a Soap Opera.

Wu Sha Ling

this single season might have the most pound for pound quality acting in each episode i've ever seen in a show. lots of shows have better plots or writing and are more popular, but this is concentrated gold.

Glenn Burns

Oh wow. Here we are! I'm so excited for this. Thanks, Cassie!

Jaccob Cortes

Didnt even know you were gonna watch this. This is one of the greats in terms of detective noirs.

William Bryan

Alexandra Daddario. God she's so gorgeous. 😍💗

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

I watched it as it aired so I had the break in between episodes. I have gone back and binged since then though. I love how true it is, how real it can be in terms of losing hope in humanity.

Brian Harris

Incredible season of television. Yes, certainly among the best ever produced. I’d say this, Season 4 of The Wire, Season 3 of The Sopranos, Season 5 of Mad Men, and Season 5 of The Shield are my top five TV drama seasons. Comedy is a whole other thing. Yes, Rust was taking drugs while undercover. Not only with his superiors’ permission, it was part of the job. In order to be convincing undercover, he needed to be able to do as other criminals did. Rust’s entire backstory is a fucking nightmare. It’s no wonder his philosophy develops as it does. The thing I think is so interesting is how a lot of folks are initially freaked out by Rust and his belief system. An awful lot of people who watch this show start out thinking Rust is the killer. They share Marty’s repulsion with his worldview. But inevitably, of course, Marty turns out to have a rageful nature, and he’s out running around on his wife. By midway through the second episode, society’s moral priorities seem screwed. And hang onto your hat, because these contradictions don’t get any easier. One of the the themes of the show, I think, is the impossibility of systems (tangible systems like law enforcement or intangible belief systems like religion or nihilism) to encompass and explain human behavior. In that sense, given what appears to be a deep cynicism about organized religion in particular, the show is asking us what we’re left with when there’s nothing there to hold back the dark anymore.

John Drake

Super! I've been meaning to watch this again - no better viewing partner to do it with! It'll be a harrowing and wild ride though, you best strap in....

Jon Johns

I watched as it aired. Both hard, and valuable 'processing' time kind of weekly wait. It's very existential. It's almost better on subsequent viewings. There are pretty good shorts about each episode, HBO has pretty good special features for it's shows...

aarswft

I was obsessed with this show when it aired. Basically spent every Monday in forums discussing theories and clues. Had a whole conspiracy web board ready for the finale lol.

Caomhan84

I too watched it when it aired. There aren't many TV shows and movies that I rank as "perfect," but this is one of them. If it's not perfect, it's pretty darn close to perfect. And I think the overwhelming feeling I got was how immersive the whole experience was. Yes, you were drawn into the story, but you were also drawn into the atmosphere. It was a total sensory and intellectual experience. Just a brilliant show.

Aaron Mann

Such a great show. I’m glad you’re finally watching it. Another great detective murder mystery I would recommend is Mare of Easttown. It was also an HBO based show. It stars Kate Winslet as a small town detective. I’m sure you would absolutely love it. It's only 7 episodes and one season, so not a huge time commitment.

Chris Bode

My favorite ever Anthology or single season of TV. Right here, True Detective Season 1. The show only gets better from here.

Matt Rose

We watched it as it aired here. Same with seasons 2 and 3. Great show, you're in for a treat.

Odd Thomas

I liked all three series, but 1 is the best. It set such a crazy high benchmark, people were underwhelmed with 2 and it got a lot of blowback.

Odd Thomas

I'd like to request The Haunting of Hill House series on Netflix. THAT would be a great reaction choice

softshoes

Nice job Cass. This is one terrific mind twister. At some point you need to delve into some of HBO's older series. You mentioned The Cord🤣in your opening, that's a great one. My favorite would be Deadwood, Six Feet Under...so many. Anyways looking forward to you're next watch of this.

Craig Russell

What happened to The Right Stuff??

Larry Darrell

Watched as it came out. Maybe the last series, I watched weekly. There was no waiting for it to finish. You couldn't wait. It was return to TV for Woody, but first series for McConaughey. They both blew it out of the park on this one. For a dark show, their exchanges in the car are pretty dog gone funny, too. Best Season of TV, other than this one, that sticks to mind, is the First Season of Lost (2004), which was of the Old School seasons, running from September - May with 25 or so episodes. Nowadays you binge a show in a day, and then its over. Then you wait a year and half, two years to see more. I kinda miss the Old Ways a little. It gave you something to look forward to all year long, instead of watching in a day and then forget about it. The World just moves too fast Nowadays. That's my Nostalgic moment for the day. I try to limit them. To become more familiar with Undercover Cops and how far they have to go to do their job and stay alive, recommend: for true story, Donnie Brasco (1997); for fictionalized, but realistic, The Departed (2006). Also, to understand the Anti-Religious nature that some of the higher ups were trying to place on the case, recommend: documentary, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996), & two sequels Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (2000) and Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (2011).

Gábor Árki

I binged it. By the time I heard about it through word of mouth, the entire season aired already. Despite being dark and grim and quite a slow burner, it is so intriguing at the same time that you just want to watch the next one. It is certainly one of those rare cases where everything just fell into place. Great writing, really good use of the multiple timelines format, a very unique location, and some stellar performances. Especially from Matthew McConaughey. The man can really act if he gets invested in a role. Hard to imagine he is the same guy doing one in a dozen rom-coms. Cassie, mentioning How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days made me remember something I discovered not long ago. Have you really not seen Fool's Gold (2008), the movie reuniting Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson on screen, or is it just an administrative flaw? If not, it could be a good way to cleanse after this series. I'm not suggesting it for a reaction, but simply for personal entertainment. PS: maybe not among the best season of TV, but season 1 of Prison Break was so great. Also season 2 of Sherlock.

nick bell

Great reaction!! Fun watching with you!! Never feel bad for not talking enough! Just means you're enthralled.

Rue

I LOOOOOOOVE the first season of True Detective. Honestly, I know so many people harp on and on about The Wire or Breaking Bad (which is really good, fair play!), but for me, this is probably one of the most perfect seasons of a show I've ever watched. Apart from, maybe, the first season of Hannibal but that one's a tough watch even for me in some places lol

Rue
>>99626833

Prison Breaaaaaaaak! Good gref, that show is amazing!

Code Monkey

Please please please pay attention; make mental notes of the surnames Tuttle, Childress and Fontenot ...

Theodore Donald 'Donny' Kerabatsos

The Wire is the best show in my opinion. All seasons are great but start with the 1st... you cant go wrong. First season of Deadwood is also excellent.

Sir_Dalagad

It's very hard not to binge lol The subject is hard to handle but the acting is brilliant. You can really see the effect of years and the toll of his cynicism and trauma on Cohle

Chris H

Generation Kill and The Wire, both on HBO

TinCan Cosmanaut

Wow what a pleasant surprise. Did this win a pole or something I’m not aware of?

William Bryan
>>99599775

Oh God yeah. Brunette hair and blue eyes are the best combination. Carmen Electra, Megan Fox, Tiffani Thiessen, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Blunt

Chip MC

I saw this back around when it came out and I still often think about specific scenes and quotes and moments. Really stuck with me. I think I binged it over 2 days. VERY excited to revisit this with you.

Celeste McAllister
>>99599775

Yeah brunette w/blue eyes, almost as good as redheads with blue eyes Jessica Chastain,Amy Adams,Maureen O'Hara the list goes on❤💙

Mike LL
>>99596393

I couldn't even begin to say what was the best season of TV ever, but have to say The Wire is the best TV show I've ever seen. Didn't ever think Cassie would watch a multi-season show here, but if she ever did, The Wire would be worth it. Season 4 was fantastic, but how do you beat season 1 or 3. They are all great. Basically the wire refers to the electronic surveillance of the criminal gangs the police were after in The Wire, but the exceptional character development and exploration and the social commentary can't be beat or equaled, IMHO.

Mike LL

I was not looking forward to this honestly, I just remembered how dark it was, but as I watch all the reactions I can, I plunged in and your reaction won me over. I was laughing hard while Hart was begging Cohle to shut up in the car. Can't wait to see the rest. Some of the abbreviations they used in the show The detectives work for the Louisiana State Police CID -Criminal Investigation Division CI - Criminal Informant KA - Known Associates DB - dead body Some of the best shows I've ever seen came from HBO, The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood. And some from AMC, Breaking Bad and Mad Men. And Downton Abbey from the BBC. But The Wire is the best in my book by far. Couldn't tell you what the best season of TV I've seen is though, would make my brain hurt to figure that out.

Rick Williams

This was a good show. Great Reaction Cassie. I knew it would be a little hard for you to watch. Hang in there. It is worth the ride.

Phillip Ribbink

Matthew McConaughey got really into the character of Rust, so much so he actually wrote a 450 page document outlining the entirety of Rust's life. That is dedication. Woody Harrelson on the other hand really liked the role of Marty because he was trying to break out of being typecast as "The funny, laid-back that guy everybody likes." Do Mini-Series count as a perfect Season of Television? Because if they do, the vote definitely goes to Lonesome Dove.

Jon Johns
>>99634832

I thought C.I. was confidential informant? I mean, they are usually criminals...

Jon Johns
>>99620301

Should be up Sunday, it's loooong, so, editing even for Patreon takes a little longer...

Stick Figure Studios

I think this is some of Matthew McConaughey's best work here.

Tara

Hey Cassie, I’ve never seen the show so I’m watching along with you, but now I want to binge the rest of the season. Woody and Matthew are AMAZING!! If you want to see another incredible transformation and performance by Matthew McConaughey, add Dallas Byers Club to your list. He won the Best Actor Oscar for that movie

Mega Reacts

Great show. Best season of a show was Westworld season 1.

Charlie Chap

This duo is probably the most dynamic of any episodic show I’ve ever seen, and absolutely 100% my all time favorite.

Evil Darth Carl

"Juice" is an old street term for PCP "Gaming" or "Running Game" is slang for prostitution/working as a prostitute "CI" is Confidential Informant

Evil Darth Carl

The Wire is showing it's age as far as technology goes, but it does show the real world side of big city policing from both the Police and the bad guys perspective. The same people who did the Wire also did Generation Kill. Both series are know for their attention to authenticity and realistic depictions of the subject matter/story being told. The last season of The Wire kind of jumps the shark though

Joon S

I binged it, but I can definitely see how the experience might have been better watching it as it aired. Sometimes I miss those days of only getting an episode a week, and spending the week coming up with and discussing theories online; last show I really had that experience for was the first few seasons of Lost. I've binged most of the shows I've watched since then, and I always feel a tiny bit like I'm spoiling the experience for myself. Also, this season has one of my favorite opening theme songs of any show ever.

tiny baby kitty man

Welp, looks like I now have the perfect excuse to do what I'm guessing is either my 5th or 6th watch of this season. I really didn't feel like I was ready to revisit it, but I was hooked again within the first 5 minutes. Toughest part is going to be waiting for Cassie to put these out because, honestly, I was SO ready to plow into the third episode immediately after this ended.

G

I'm a big fan of HBO, and this is another excellent series from them. I can't wait to see Cassie's reaction. HBO's The Last of Us premiere's tonight. Hopefully, someday Cassie will react to it as well.

Johnny Liu

Back when this show was first airing, I was in college and me and my roommates would watch it week to week, but we were so obsessed with it that when the season finished we pulled an all nighter watching the entire thing movie style in one sitting. I remember it was already morning when we finished and went out to breakfast afterwards, good times haha.

Tonio

Because of my profession I've never watched this series. Watching With You Is Fun. So in a joking way if you don't get more of these out and fast the police will find me drawing naked women with antlers on my walls, LOL and I will blame you in my Manifesto, LOL. I think this series is just the right level for you. By the way just kidding about the walls and Manifesto. I think you can handle it. What I would say to you is if you want to push the envelope just watch sicario and you can handle anything. Lol.

Joshua s. Jackson

I would definitely recommend " Stranger Things" on Netflix for another series.

Scott Macaulay

I wanted to re-watch this series anyway because I read a theory that it has Lovecraftian influences or themes. What a bonus I can watch it with Cassie!

Odd Thomas

One of the best series ever is Legion. It's so unique and creative but is also really all about mental health. Dan Stevens is the star and Aubrey Plaza is in it, which is reason enough to watch it!

Odd Thomas

Another obvious choice is Twin Peaks. The first series is iconic - the second series where David Lynch left the show, it kind of lost its mojo. But then he came BACK 20 years later for the 3rd series, which is even better than the first imo

Odd Thomas

Sharp Objects; brilliant murder mystery with Amy Adams. Only six episodes too!

AgentFalcon

True Detective S1 is def up there with the best of shows. The Wire is really good too, S1,3&4 especially. Personally, I'd add Person of Interest S3 and Black Sails S2&3 as my favorites.

granny_goodness

You'd probably enjoy Mr Robot if you like the dark tone of this show.

Christopher Gray

So this is a fantastic show, but I am not certain you are going to survive thru to the end.LOL

LuMarq

I watched it as it came out so I was forced to wait a whole week between episodes :( I'm glad you're starting this series. I think I may be in the minority but I actually really like season 2

Just Plain Bob
>>99703254

I think season 2 is the True Detective version of The Godfather Part 3. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s that it doesn’t measure up to what came before.

Jesus F Christ

I forgot how much I loved this show's theme song. And Alexandra Daddario's.. acting.

Just Plain Bob

If she’s gonna keep reacting to tv shows, I really think Cassie would love Pushing Daisies. It’s very underrated and its central relationship is a love story. Plus, it’s just creative as hell. Very different from anything else I’ve seen on tv, in the best possible way.

brooke atkins
>>99642260

Yes Dallas buyers club is a must for Cassie. Great performances by Matthew and Jared in that film.

Ramzi M. A. Ramzi

Suggestion: "The Sinner" on Netflix. 4 Seasons (2017 - 2021). I enjoyed the 1st, 3rd, and 4th seasons very much. 2nd season was not bad but the others were better IMHO. Like "True Detective", each season has an independent story, but share one main character; Detective Harry Ambrose, played exceptionally well by the wonderful Bill Pullman.

Christopher B.

Band of Brothers or True Detective Season 1 would be my top mini-series. Of my favorite anthologies/mini-series that you haven't yet watched, "From The Earth To The Moon" is by far my number one. The uplifting and inspiring story of the Apollo program would probably be a nice palate cleanser after the darkness that is True Detective.

Philip Alan

Never seen this series, but always wanted to. Just binged the hell out of it. OMGerrrrrr. So excellent. Woah.

Charlie Chap
>>99643876

It’s not that they’re bad. In fact they’re probably better than most stuff in the genre. The problem is that Season 1 was SO GOOD that the other seasons are a letdown in comparison, which you just can’t help but do.

N M

Northern Exposure Mad Men Downton Abbey

nick bell
>>99703254

I didn't hate it. On its own its not terrible. Compared to seaon one though, it's a step down.

Connor P

Game of Thrones Season 4 is the best - I'm guessing that was the one that was on the list you referenced

N M

I watched the first 15 minutes of this True Detective episode and couldn’t take anymore. Too morbid for my taste.

Rodger Johnson

The acting and writing in this show was amazing but its too much for me. The subject matter was way too dark to enjoy.

rakesh

Best Season 1 Lost. Best Tv show. Lost.

Grad

I highly recommend the Pride and Prejudice miniseries from 1995 with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

Albert

Finally I’ve been waiting for this

Robert da Spruce

Nice reaction Cassie! It’s funny how one’s opinion of Matthew and Woody’s characters shifts in just these two episodes. In the first episode. Rust seems very weird. And Marty is the family man. Then by the second episode. We begin to sympathize with Rust. Him losing his child. His marriage falling apart soon afterwards. At the same time, Marty, who seemed to be such a family man. Is cheating on his wife. Definitely a roller coaster ride. I’m glad you’re intrigued. It really is an excellent series. Looking forward to the next reaction!

Anthony Perez

Dang it Cassie...this is the first time watching this for me...and now I can't wait to watch the next episodes but I can't without you by my side...or on a screen in front of me. Gotta say that the line Rust said about him "not sleeping but he dreams all the time" is something I am familiar with. When I am undergoing stress I lay in bed for hours and dream...but when I get up it's not like waking. Hard to explain...very detailed weird dreams but my body doesn't seem to get any rest. Thankfully those episodes happen less and less often. ANd when I can't sleep I can always re-watch some of my favorite Popcorn in bed episodes. Now there's a poll to take...what are patrons favorite episodes ?
