[YT Edit] The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Triple 07, is what I'm mentally calling it to go with ole Bond.

Neill Shaughness

I really love that you put effort into watching Hollywood legacy series like this, Frankenstein, and 007.

Isaac

As a kid I always thought that Yul Brynner (Chris Adams) was playing the same character in Westworld (1973) as both characters dressed practically the same and of course were both played by Yul Brynner. I'm assuming they based his Westworld character on Chris Adams from The Magnificent Seven. So yeah kid self was confused and thought Westworld was a cool sequel to The Magnificent Seven lol A Westworld watch along now that would make for an interesting reaction.

Tringard

I've never tried watching these movies so close together, it's an interesting experience

Roger Banks

Charles Bronson was also in The Great Escape.

Chris

If you're looking for John Wayne movies, I would recommend Stagecoach from 1939, or Angel and the Bad Man from 1947 for earlier movies. From the '60s there's McClintock, El Dorado, Rio Lobo, or the Sons of Katie Elder.

Jacob Antony

After that John Wayne confusion I think we need a John Wayne poll/week. Some great ones are Red River, Big Jake, McLintock!, The Cowboys, El Dorado, Rainbow Valley, Hondo, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Sons of Katie Elder, The War Wagon, True Grit, and The Shootist. And so many more.

Christopher Carr

Alright Cassie you are becoming quite the cinephile. Two points: John Wayne was in the Quiet MAN not place. He's not in TM7. If you want to see John Wayne at his western best see what some film historians consider arguably the greatest Western ever made: The Searchers. It's in beautiful technicolor filmed in Monument Valley not to far from where you live I imagine. Another western that is arguably TS's equal is Shane. It's also in color and filmed in Montana. I love them both. If you want to be able to discuss the western genré you have to be able to refer to those two. On another topic, regarding the African Queen, John Huston made The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 7 or 8 years earlier but it's style is much griter and realistic than AQ. There is referenced romance but it's strictly adventure with some deep investigation of the human condition. These 3 have to be seen to be a well rounded cinephile.

Are they disappearing? It is a known Patreon thing that I thought was fixed but maybe not.

I think you have to say some pretty dumb things to get your comments blocked🤔. If they were blocked, there was probably a good reason🤷‍♂️

Hey Richard! Just so you know I don't block any messages here on Patreon, and I'm the only one with the ability to do so! Patreon has marked perfectly fine comments as spam before, but if you reach out to them it should get resolved! Sorry about that!!

There is an edit feature. It's the 'pencil' under your message, third from the left- heart (like), speech bubble (reply), pencil (edit), trash can (delete). edit- it is good form to tell what you edit in or out.

Stephen Borden

Charles Bronson was Danny the Tunnel King in The Great Escape.

James Coburn, who played Britt the knifeman, was also in The Great Escape. He was the one who escaped to Spain with help from the French resistance at the cafe.

CG Shunk

and Yul Brynner (Chris) was Rameses in The Ten Commandments

Since Cassie already saw John Wayne and Maureen Ohara both in The Quiet Man she should really follow up with probably the best John Wayne and Maureen Ohara pairing in McClintock.

Johan

Should watch The King & I, another Yul Brynner movie.

Julian Corbett

Oh Cassie, you are such an innocent :) It's one of the things that make your reactions so much fun to watch. When Britt told the farmer to "pull the butt firmly into your shoulder", he wasn't talking about his bottom. He was referring to the butt of the rifle. Rifles recoil (move backwards) when fired so if you don't pull the butt firmly into your shoulder when you fire, the rifle will fly backwards and smack you in the shoulder. Depending on the power of the cartridge in the rifle, at best, this leaves heavy brusing; at worst it can break your collar bone, which anyone who has had a broken collar bone can attest, it's exceptionally painfull.

What Julian says .... I was going to say the same thing till I saw his comment.

"Hey, it's the guy from The Great Escape." You might now better understand my joke from when The Magnificent Seven went up against The Great Escape in the Classics Chaos bracket: I'll vote for the John Sturges movie featuring Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn (and scored by Elmer Bernstein). (By the way, James Garner, who was in The Greatest Western Ever :-) Maverick, was in The Great Escape, but not in this movie, as he was busy starring in ... the original Maverick TV series.) This movie has one of the great ensemble casts, full of stars and stars-to-be. Not unsurprisingly, this caused some tension. Here is one of my favorite movie anecdotes, regarding their oneupmanship: https://youtu.be/iQnLfKZc2x4?t=1463

07:00 "He does not look like a Chris" Well, given that his real-life name is Yul, he more than qualifies for Chris... (Ba-dumm-tss.) 05:34 Steve McQueen (Vin) is literally riding shotgun. Given the recent passing of Tim Bachman, here's Shotgun Rider by Bachman-Turner Overdrive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_Zmwxt0VF8 12:38 "Did that kill him or just injure him?" It was just a minor flesh wound. He healed right up and is now living happily in a bucolic little farm in the faraway countryside. :-) :-) :-)

Patreon's anti-spam measures are sometimes slightly too aggressive, as I've had the pleasure of finding out. If you email guidelines@patreon.com using your Patreon account email, they should restore your comments.

OK, so John Wayne wasn't in it, but if you want to see him become John Wayne, watch "Stagecoach" - John Ford's classic film from 1939 (like Wizard of Oz) that made him a star. You can also watch Steve McQueen and Robert Vaughn together again in "Bullitt" when Steve became the so-called "king of cool".

In Bullitt was the most famous of car chase scenes. It was the first time cars went at that speed without speeding up the camera to simulate it.

Obligatory plug for The French Connection, which seems to me to have almost completely dropped off the radar. (In Cassie-speak, it stars Gene Hackman, the coach from The Replacements and evil Sheriff "Little Bill" from Unforgiven.) (I'm not really recommending it as a reaction, but rather urging all of you fine people to give it a chance.)

CG Shunk

and if you are watching Steve McQueen movies you can't leave out Pappillon

SyrupMcWaffle

So just so you’re clear part of the idea in this movie and the original is that the life of a roving gunfighter or samurai is not necessarily the glorious life you would think it is in the stories. The point is that is that it is not a life that you should aspire too though it does have it’s good parts and you can accomplish some things there are a lot of good things in life you have to sacrifice.

Bill W

I love Yul Brynner, but "Chris Adams" is one of, if not THE worst cowboy name I've ever heard.

warcrimes

"That was not John Wayne" is probably the greatest line in reactor history.

😂😂😂 Always thought this but don’t think I ever said it out loud.
