Are you doing the directors cut of Star Trek?

Cody Nelson

Cassie you've made my day!! Not only for starting the Star Trek movies(and I hope you watch all 6 of the original cast ones) but for watching The Mummy Returns! I think you're going to love it as much as the first! (hopefully lol)

Matt Rose

Cassie: do the newer director's cut of STAR TREK: TMP. The pacing is much better, among other things.

Jon-Henri Roman

Finally... looking forward to The Mummy Returns and Star Trek The Motion Picture (you are going to be in for a wild ride)

William Bryan

Still in Halloween mode. Though Halloween for me is a lifestyle not a holiday lol

William Bryan

Can't wait til you get to Wrath of Khan. Arguably the best Star Trek movie

Justin Samlal
>>123810998

I always rank Undiscovered Country ahead of Wrath of Khan! Love the politics of it all.

Mike Amandes

I'm so excited about The Family Man! It's one of my favorites, and I've wanted to see you react to ever since you saw a different side of Nicolas Cage in It Could Happen to You. And I can only imagine your reaction when you realized "Madam Secretary" is one of the leads.

Justin Samlal

I'm so excited for this run! The Family Man is one of the few movies I watch every Christmas (along with Love Actually, Cinderella Man, and It's a Wonderful Life). And PLEASE make sure to watch the Director's Cut when you watch Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's very very important to watch the Director's Cut or you'll be lost and bored.

Cody Nelson
>>123810804

I would assume so. It seems to be the default version on the streaming platforms that I’ve checked.

Roger Hagerty

Soooo happy that you are reacting to The Family Man. Hope Carly joins you. Looking forward to the PiB Live with you two gals.

Jon Johns

I've seen multiple versions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (maybe only 2 versions?) And the one with the extended special effects video sequences (that I lovingly call, 'video vomit') is the one I prefer least. It might be visually stunning, but it's a snorefest for new initiates. Someone correct me, but does that version have other character development, or plot motivating scenes as well? Or just 20 minutes + of fractal CGI?

djKENTO
>>123810804

yeah I really like how Trek remasters use CGI that’s made to look accurate to the time.

Zane From Canada

Very excited about The Mummy Returns! Looks like I'll be having to invest in a copy of The Family Man. Never seen it. Sadly, I'll be missing the Live on Dec. 9th. I've got a Christmas party of my own to attend. Hope it's a blast! As for continuing "Brenaissance" (very clever), do check out With Honors (1994). Him, Joe Pesci, Moira Kelly from Cutting Edge, and McDreamy himself Patrick Dempsey. I find it to be a very fitting feel-good movie to watch this time of year. 😊

Gábor Árki

STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE. I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it. 🤩🤩 Cassie, please react to the DIRECTOR'S EDITION (runtime 2h 16m, available on Paramount+). It is a much better version of the movie. The theatrical is not a properly finished film, they simply ran out of time.

Scott Macaulay

Star trek: TMP is a somewhat divisive movie. Some love it, some hate it. Those that like it as I do enjoy it for it's slow-burn cerebral nature and long Enterprise beauty shots. It's not an action movie, more a 2001: Space Odyssey type film. It doesn't set the tone for the rest of the franchise really. That starts with 2. My essential Trek movies for non-Trekkies: 2,3, 4, and 6.

Don

Don’t let the first Star Trek movie put you off the rest. Not saying it’s bad. But i don’t think it’s very exciting. Star Trek 2 the wrath of khan is where they get really good.

Dean Holt
>>123810998

Both Wrath of Khan & Undiscovered County are the best shortly followed by The Voyage Home imo. Montalban is fantastic but so is Christopher Plummer that’s why I find it hard to pick between the two sometimes.

Gábor Árki
>>123811546

There are 3 versions of the movie: - Theatrical (2h 12m): has several flaws. They ran out of time, so effects, sound, editing is not properly finished. - Special Longer Version (around 2h 30m): several scenes have been added back to the movie by the studio but has all the flaws as the TC. Also, some readded scenes have no special effects. Part of a special collectors BD, not really accessible otherwise. - Director's Edition (2h 16m): Robert Wise created it in 2000. Did a lot of polishing with the edit, reordered some scenes and trimmed them down. Also readded a few others. Much better pacing IMO. Also, they finished the missing effects using CGI. This has been remastered in 4K last year and widely accessible on home video and streaming.

ElmSt Reactions

IT chapter 2 is a Christmas movie, can we please get that, so not waiting a year for it lol

Cole Jennett

I’ve been blasting the Christmas with Boney M. album daily for over a week now!

Matt Rose
>>123810998

I'm the rare person that rates STAR TREK III: TSFS as 'the best' of the classic Trek films. That said, 2, 3, and 4 make for a nearly perfect trilogy of films. They show the classic crew at their best, both in high drama and in high comedy.

Jon Johns
>>123811546

Buddy!!! I've not seen the director cut! Sound like exactly what I want, thanks for the info! I wonder if it avail on Paramount +?

Celeste McAllister

Before 1970?..there's 'Scrooge' 1970 with Albert Finney,'The Bishops Wife' 1942 with Cary Grant that's two. :) 🎄💻🎁

Dean Holt

Another great week on PIB. I’m sure you won’t but don’t be put off if you don’t really like The Motion Picture as it’s the worst one imo also be prepared to have the Trek score stuck in your head as it plays on repeat for about half the film with no dialogue lol.

Matt Rose
>>123811546

do the DC. Easily the best version of the film. You still have the 3 hour flyby of the Enterprise and the 5 hour flyover of (you know what...avoiding spoilers) but the rest of it all flows so much better.

The Middle Aged Gamer

Please 🙏 don't do that star trek movie. For the love of God, it is the worst representation of trek in all its forms.

Jay Davis

Really REALLY looking forward to the Treks. Especially II... and IV... and III... and, yes, even The Motion Picture. Okay. All of them. Let's GO!

Matt Rose

As a Christmas selection, I'll again tout one of my absolute favorite films of the last 20 years or so: KISS KISS, BANG BANG with Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, and Michelle Monahan. It's a blast and, like most Shane Black films, takes place over Christmas.

Jason Dolan

The Family Man is an underrated classic. Brett Ratner gets a bad rap but despite what Abed might think he’s made some pretty damn good movies, including the best Silence of the Lambs sequel.

Bridget

@Popcorn In Bed, "Okay!...Cassie, for the classic Christmas poll: `White Christmas'(1954) & `Meet Me In St.Louis'(1944), now for the modern Christmas poll: `Violent Night' & `Krampus'. Can`t wait too see you & Carly`s reaction to `The Mummy Returns', your gonna love it, TIL THEN!!!"

Jayson Phillips

Pleaseeeeeee do not think Star Trek the motion picture is trash and then skip the others, even Gene Rodenberry didn't like the results he said it was too technical for people. ST 2 is the best imo. and also ST undiscovered country.

Gábor Árki
>>123811546

@Jon, the DC version of the movie was not really available for many years. It was made for a DVD released in 2001 and only in standard definition. The HD version of the theatrical cut replaced it soon after and was the only version available in Blu-ray and streaming until 2022. I think you might enjoy the DC version the most, based on what you said. Overall, it cuts several minutes from those scenes and other parts of the TC. In exchange it is adding back some character moments and some other special effects scenes that have only been omitted originally due to unfinished effect shots.

Neil Varma

Awesome Cassie . Be well 🙏💙🤞

hurryupmode

I love that meme from Memehotep's Mummyposting that shows Rick, Evelyn, Ardeth Bey, Imhotep, and Anck-su-namun, and says "my sexual orientation is the cast of The Mummy Returns" lol.

Zachary K. (Verified Swiftie)

It's great to watch movies with you Cassie every time you come out with a new one it makes my day. I am so thankful for you. I absolutely love you and Carly. Thank you so much

Gábor Árki
>>123815364

I wouldn't worry about that. I think we sort of got a commitment from Cassie during the TOS sampler YT live for the first 2 movies. And after that the 3rd would probably not be a question. 😉

Jon Johns
>>123811546

I will find it 😉 your description / endorsement is just what I needed.

LDC7080

I have not watched it myself yet but I’m told the directors edition of Star Trek the movie is a major upgrade . Might be worth checking out ?

Cole Jennett
>>123812622

Thank you so much for sending that! This album is my childhood, and the only Christmas song that has more nostalgia for me is John Lennon’s “So this is Christmas”🥰

Annie519

I'm so excited about The Family, thank you for doing that one! It's such a great film and puts you in that holiday feeling.

Mark Vaderr

Looks like a fun week, Cassie. Too bad that Carly cannot join you for The Family Man, you both would enjoy it. Very excited for the upcoming LIVE event, I will finally be able to give Carly my list of Romantic Movies to her. I hope that this month is filled with more joy and less stress for you. The time from October through Halloween to Thanksgiving to Christmas and the New Year has always been special to me, and I'm hoping that this time has been special for you.

Rosario Cicero

Ugh!!! Please skip the first Trek movie! Even as a stupid ten year old kid I thought to myself- “This is film is the most boring turd I’ve ever seen”

Grégory Gautier

The Familiy man great movie, you'll love it!

Duncan

The Family Man is a yearly watch for me every Christmas without fail ,it is in my top 5 list of romantic comedies and it is a fantastic movie with a great feel to it ,both yourself and Carly would absolutely love this movie and it is right up both your street ,so it would be incredible if Carly joined for that reaction if she was available

Stick Figure Studios
>>123819186

She has committed to watching at least the first three (which pleases me personally as I think the first one is woefully underrated).

Just Plain Bob
>>123819186

There is no question that the first Trek movie is different in tone from both the tv series and the subsequent movies. That said, I’ve always liked it. While different in tone from the series, it does capture the wonder of exploration and pursues ideas outside simple adventure for adventure sake. It is much slower paced than the subsequent films, which I know many people don’t like. Personally, if I were ranking the films, it would be Trek 2, Trek 6, Trek 4, Trek 1, Trek 3 and Trek 5, with Trek 5 being the only one I believe could be skipped.

Just Plain Bob
>>123813689

I second your suggestion of Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. It is a great movie that I think Cassie would love and which would make for a great reaction. It’s got several things she likes in a movie: comedy, crime solving, a love story, a buddy cop element, great dialogue, a good story and fantastic acting from Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer and Michelle Monaghan.

Dean Holt
>>123813077

Completely respect you opinion and have no issues with that as I know quite I few people like the 1st film. But for me it just feels like a 45 minute episode really stretch out to over 2 hours. I’ve never timed it but it feels like there about an hour of just the score playing with no dialogue 😂. Yes the 5th one is very poor but it has a few funny bits in and I really like the opening scene with the 3 of them in the park. The TNG movies have always felt more like double episodes to me but I’d still watch all of the before The Motion Picture as I just find it really boring.

Stick Figure Studios

This will be a fun week. I've been hoping you'd watch the sequel to THE MUMMY, but I wasn't expecting it until next October. This is a nice treat). Though not as good as the first one, I'm sure you will like it. THE FAMILY MAN is a charming holiday movie. Another one you will like. But the movie I'm most excited about this week is the first STAR TREK, the beginning of your cinematic Trek journey. The special effects of the TV show are going to take a huge leap forward in this film (and they are even better in the directors Edition which I will add my voice to the chorus recommending). It is a divisive entry in the series as you can probably tell from the multiple comments calling it "boring" and suggesting you skip it (which is really bad advice), but I'm one of those who absolutely loves it and thinks it's woefully underrated. Though not nearly as exciting and action-packed as subsequent Treks, it is actually my personal favorite Trek movie because I think it has something few other Trek movies (or few other movies in general) have: majesty. It might be more slowly paced than a conventional Hollywood movie and consequently require a bit more patience, but is stunningly gorgeous and quite awe-inspiring times. It is also thematically speaking the deepest, most philosophical Trek movie filled with big ideas and concepts. As someone else here pointed out, it's less STAR WARS and more 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (which I know probably doesn't mean much to you as you haven't seen the latter yet, but let me just say that it is not a bad thing). It also has, for my money, the definitive Star Trek music score by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. I suspect people are just asking you to skip it because they either just don't like it and don't want to revisit it with you (which, of course, they don't have to) or they're just worried you'll dislike it and as a result not watch the rest. I am not worried about that at all: a) I think you might actually like it more than most and b) I know you've already committed to at least the first three. After the third one, you'll be hooked I'm certain (heck, I could see you being hooked after the second one which is a terrific movie and generally considered the best entry). So you do you. I trust you. :) Keep up the good work.

Just Plain Bob

I hope The Shop Around the Corner is on the poll and either wins or Cassie decides to watch it anyway. I feel certain she’d love it. A young Jimmy Stewart in a Christmas movie/romantic comedy. What wouldn’t she love about that?

Matt

Looking forward to your reaction to the Family Man😊

Javier Hernandez

Please consider: Babes In Toyland (1934) Remember the Night (1940) Holiday Inn (1942) Meet Me in St Louis (1944) Christmas in Conn. (1945) Miracle on 34th St. (1947) Three Godfathers (1948) White Christmas (1954) We're No Angels (1955) But also Trading Places (1983) Gremlins (1984)

Matt

Highly recommend a new christmas film called THE HOLDOVERS, one of my favorite films all year🎄

Steve Holton
>>123821846

Well said Damian. I hope the 4th movie gets a chance too. Harlan Ellison, writer of “The City On The Edge Of Forever” actually suggested the concept based on an outreach from Leonard Nimoy. It was long considered one of the most accessible Star Trek features for non-fans and its great success spawned the development of the Next Generation Star Trek series.

Just Plain Bob
>>123821846

I started to try to sum up what I like about the first movie and why Cassie SHOULD NOT skip it and then I ran across your post. Perfectly stated and I agree with everything you said (although I don’t love it quite as much as you).

Gábor Árki
>>123819186

I've always seen TMP as sort of the archetype for the next generation era. It introduced a new aesthetic and design that - although was partly used in the upcoming movies - was only truly adopted and built upon by TNG. It also explored more complex and philosophical themes that are more akin to the hard sci-fi episodes of TNG than the action-oriented ones of TOS.

Stick Figure Studios
>>123821846

Like I said, she'll be hooked after three, so she's definitely doing the fourth... especially since everyone and their mother will be telling her his great it is.

Stick Figure Studios
>>123821846

Thank you. Yeah, I know my regard for it is unusual, but there are enough of us out there that the film's reputation is bouncing back a little bit.

Gábor Árki
>>123821846

It is divisive for sure. More than I ever thought of, based on the comments I'm seeing here during the past few weeks. But I think there is devoted minority of Trekkies who really love it. You probably don't have to go further than Popcornrequests. It is currently beating V and even III, and is practically on par with VI based on the number of requests.

David Collins
>>123819186

Not sure why people grumble when she watches movies they don't like. I'd have been fine if she skipped TMP. I'm not especially a fan of the first one either, though it's still a decent SciFi movie. I'll certainly watch it again since she isn't skipping it. Be patient, she'll get to the better ones soon.

Stick Figure Studios
>>123813077

It's certainly not for everyone and it does require more patience than a more conventional blockbuster (it's almost more of an art film), but it can be very rewarding for those willing to be open to thr experience. The older I get, the less I find I am needing my movies to "excite" or "stimulate" me and the more appreciative I am of films that can "awe" me, make me think or fill me with wonder (like ST: TMP or 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY or AD ASTRA or CONTACT or SOLARIS) though there's a place for both kind of films of course.

In terms of Christmas music, I've been listening to the classic Christmas song FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK by the Pogues Feat. Kirsty McColl. It is one of the greatest Christmas songs you could ever hear at Christmas. There is a really great BBC documentary on how it got made. RIP Kirsty McColl and Shane MacGowan, who died just a few days ago aged 65. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUSNzqqLFT0

I joined your $10 a month patron but I am not really sure I know what I’m doing. I tried watching your live free or die hard reaction and the movie kept coming in all blurry you could not even see it and I doing something wrong

Randolph Tirazona

Cassie!!! I'm hoping and praying that you and family including Carly can watch "Christmas Jars" 2019 and you'll see why I've been pushing this one so I much!

Just Plain Bob
>>123825563

They have to blur the movie for copyright reason. For the full length reactions you have to find your own copy to follow along with, typically streaming on Amazon or a similar service.

brooke atkins
>>123825563

You have to have a copy of the movie she’s watching. She has to blur it out for copyright laws.

kaiielle
>>123825563

Hi Ted, full-length reactions require your own copy of the movie to sync up along with the reaction, Cassie usually gives around a minute at the start of the movie so that you can hear the audio and see the visuals in order to get your copy synced up. This is explained more in the pinned post: https://patreon.com/posts/patreon-faqs-64689290

Odd Thomas

First Star Trek movie isn't great but 2 onwards is where it really sings. My favourites are 4, 6 & 7

Wesley White

Gee-wiz, quite the line up! I can feel the Christmas magic, it is one of my favorite times of the year! A darn shame I won't be able to get my Christmas package to you on time, I'm still waiting for a few items! On the plus side, my move got extended to June next year so at least I'll get to enjoy my home a while longer! Although to be honest, I've been a bit of a depressed mood lately, not to be a downer! I hope you don't mind me sharing this, but (putting it mildly) my father has been very sick lately, so I've not exactly been in the best of spirits lately! In fact it's been eating away at me so much, I still haven't watched your full length of LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, feeling depressed by worrying about a family member sucks! Aside from that, AH CRUD!!!! I can't believe you're already jumping into THE MUMMY RETURNS so soon, I got you and Carly matching tshirts again, talk about bad timing😭😭😭lol! Well, I guess all I can say is I can't wait to see that reaction, plus I also did get you two matching tshirts for another movie I hope to see you two react to by next Halloween, tshirts of the movie VAN HELSING! Unfortunately, there's a chance I won't be participating in the next LIVE, not only because I won't have a Christmas package for you and Carly by then, but because of the timing! I might drop in and at least say Hi, but that's about it! I feel so bummed and ashamed that I can't make it, I'm so sorry! You and Carly are just such amazing people, you both are sweet, kind hearted, loveable, adorable, down to earth, quirky, funny, and pretty all around amazing with hearts of gold! You two are like the sisters I never had and I can't tell you how blessed I am to be a part of this community! Anyway, once my package is completed, I'll send it out to ASAP, I don't mind waiting for the next LIVE after this one coming up, for you to open it! I hope you, Carly, and the family have a wonderful Christmas coming up, love and support and God bless all of you [virutal hugs to Cassie & Carly🤗🤗] 🥰😁😉😇🙏👍🌹

Ted Millrr

I haven’t got a clue how to do that get your own copy and sync up stuff. I’m one of them old guys that doesn’t know anything about computers and Internet.

MatthewBrown74m

The first star trek movie puts me in a snooooooooooooze

MatthewBrown74m

The mummy returns very enjoyable 😉 I can't wait for you to see all the great star trek films

Texas Anla'Shok

When you get to Star Trek VI, see if you can watch the extended version. The theatrical version seems like it’s missing pieces to me. In either case those watching along will need to know which version it is.

Rick Williams

I like the lineup. Good movies. Better than last week when I couldn't find the live watch along. Very disappointing. 🙁

Shawn Kildal

Oh no Cassie!! I sent a few things over but won't be there until the 13th or thereabouts. Dang it. Can we have a small part 2 the following week?? 🙏 I'm so sad.

I love the first one, but I realize I'm in the minority on that. Enough people have told her how great the second one is (and it is terrific) that I'm sure she won't quit after the first.

I agree. I am one of those who loves TMP, but it's pleasures that are very different from those of 2, 3, 4 and 6.

Stick Figure Studios
>>123811546

@Gabor: as much as I love the directors cut, my first exposure to the film was the "special longer version" and I wish some of those scenes/lines were kept in the DC. For me, ST: TMP is like the first SUPERMAN movie: there's no such thing as too long and I can always watch more. :-)

Stick Figure Studios
>>123810998

I'm that exceptionally rare person who likes the first movie the most, but I acknowledge that two, four and six are all terrific.

Roger Hagerty

The only time I saw Star Trek the movie was waaaaay back when it came out. It was underwhelming at best, and I was a huge fan of the show. The streaming version would have to be an improvement.

Mike LL

Such excellent picks this week. Has restored my faith! To Infinity . . . and Beyond! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Seymor Butz

He'll yes for Family Man.

Silver Machine

Please watch the recently released Director’s Cut version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It is a HUGE improvement over the theatrical version.

The Mummy Returns, YES. Was worried I would need to wait until next Halloween.

Fellow old here. I have a desktop computer. Most of her movies can be rented from YouTube. She provides links to other sites where you can rent or watch her movies. If you still have physical media and a DVD drive hooked up to your computer of course you can use that. Open two windows, one for the movie you rented and one for Cassie's reaction, side by side. Then you just have to eyeball it and make sure they both play in synchronization. There are probably other methods that more computer-savvy people will propose, but this is how I do it. It's pretty straightforward. If you made it to this site and managed to make this post, you have the requisite computer skills.

Larry Darrell

Not complaining... just curious. Do not very many people like Christmas Movies? Is that why Cassie doesn't watch a whole month of Christmas films, like in October with Horror films? I could see maybe thinking there aren't that many of them... but, there actually are. In my opinion, most of the best ones are older films, so I don't see that going well with Patrons. There are just so many Special Classic Christmas Films that I'm pretty sure Cassie would love and just might add into her "Must Watch Every Christmas" List of Films, that she then watches and passes down to her kids... like my Mom and Dad did with me. I posted my 34 Days of Christmas Films List in the last Update, and I was serious. I may not get them all watched, because, well, that's a lot... but there's a good number of them that are Must Watch Films for me, and I will make time. There is a much, much larger list too, by the way... and they're not all old. So much changes over the years... some for the Good and some for the Bad. These Christmas Films, for at least once a year, Remind me of the person that I want to be and I like that. A Big Part is Nostalgia, too. Nostalgia for when I was a kid and Christmas seemed so much bigger and grander and Magical. It's a Feeling I never want to forget. Merry Christmas Everyone... I hope it's a Magical One.

My_Cousin_Mose
>>123848957

I might like Christmas movies even less than I do horror movies. Just the movies though I still love Christmas. Hope you have a great one this year.

Mike LL
>>123848957

Like I don’t understand why The Shop Around the Corner has to be on a poll (where it is sure to lose) since Cassie said she wants to watch it!

John Liebling

Oops, watching the first Star Trek movie from 1979 is going to be a big let down. Of all the six lead Shatner movies it is by far the weakest. Its the second film, Wrath of Khan which carries the Space Seed them forward. And the third film, is better than the first but not so great. No spoilers, the end of the second film has a huge surprise, and to find out how that is resolved, then okay you'll need to watch the third film, and at the end of the third film, there is another big something which happens, and to watch how that is resolved, you need to watch the fourth film. The reason why Star Trek II, III, IV will be helpful, is because there is a different twist to those stories in the Chris Pine film...well the second film, but its better to watch his first film. So my long winded recommendation is no to the first Star Trek movie... And go will Star Trek II, III, IV then the first Chris Pine movie and the second Chris Pine movie...The third Chris Pine Star Trek movie is only so so and does not carry the thread of any Star Trek you've scene.

I’ve been thinking she is still unsure of older movies. She knows she has liked them in the past, but there hasn’t been that Hook yet, that pulls her back in. She hasn’t seen enough to get the feeling “I want to watch more.” I still say She needs a Classic Week, with… It Happened One Night (1934) Bringing Up Baby (1938) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) Arsenic and Old Lace (1944), etc, etc. For myself, Christmas Movies were a Big Hook. There was a point in my teens, when it occurred to me that there were other movies like these Christmas Movies that I love so much, just without Christmas. I Wanted to watch more. Cassie is gonna have to want to watch these films, because otherwise, not enough people are going to vote for them in a poll. Christmas seems like the perfect time to get more Classic Films watched, because there are so many Classic Christmas Films that most people Love and watch every year.

Stick Figure Studios
>>123853295

I love the first movie. I love its majesty and it's weight and it's patience and it's depth and it's beauty and it's profundity. I love it's incredible special effects, it's sense of Wonder and imagination, it's willingness to engage with more philosophical concepts/ideas and it's awe-inspiring spectacle, not to mention it's gorgeous music score by the late great Jerry Goldsmith (for my money, it is the definitive Trek score). I realize it's not for everybody as it is the least conventional Star Trek movie and it's certainly far from perfect, but I still think it is woefully underrated. It swings for the fences and if it falls short, that's just because it has more courage and ambition than most movies made then or today (personally, I think it's better to strive for greatness and fail than to aim for mediocrity and succeed). It may not be as entertaining as most of the others or as sensational or exciting or action-packed, but it is still immensely rewarding for those open to its particular pleasures. It is Star Trek as an art film (if Tarkovsky had directed a Trek movie, I think it would look a lot like this) and of the original six, I think the fifth one is by far the weakest. I still enjoy it (as I enjoy all of the movies featuring the original crew), but that one is just incompetent and clumsy and lame with subpar effects and really dumb set pieces. Give me the first one over it any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Cassie something you may need to know. In 1977 Paramount was planning a new Star trek series starring most of the original cast except for Leonard Nimoy. Then Star Wars took the country by storm and the Star Trek Phase Two was put on hold. After months of back and forth argument they decided to make it into a movie to rival Star Wars which was finally finished in 1979. They adapted the script for the first two episodes of Phase Two into the movie script and when they convinced Leonard Nimoy to come back they were stuck with the actor they had already hired to play his replacement as a new Vulcan science officer. In the end the production company wrapped all the costs of the now cancelled Phase Two series along with its ten already written scripts, new sets and already partially completed special effects into the budget for the Motion Picture which caused it to be very expensive for its time and uf not for the loyal fans it would have actually lost money, except superfans went to see it multiple times each in the theater. Then bought the VHS and Laserdisc releases and paperback novelization and assorted other paraphernalia which made the film creep up just into profit territory. Later when Star Trek the Next Generation started in 1986-87 they jumped forward a century so they could have a whole new cast who would work for less money than the quite famous by then original cast. Anyhow just before the second season of Next Generation started the Hollywood writers union went on strike. The team quickly adapted the ten unused scripts from Phase Two as a stop gap and solicited amateur writers to send in scripts because amateurs were not covered by union rules until they had made at least one professional sale. This provided another ten or eleven scripts and the season ended with a clip show from throughout the first two seasons to give them 22 episodes, the least of any modern Trek until the release of modern 21st century Trek with its half length season format. Some of those amateur scripts bought in season two led to professional Hollywood writing careers so in the end it was a good thing and the practice was continued through all three spin off series, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. Most seasons had at least one amateur script or a script adapted from an idea proposed in such a fan sent in script. This makes Star Trek almost unique in TV history as most shows that get amateur scripts just thrown them straight in the shredder to avoid issues of paying royalties to a writer who doesn't have an agent and doesn't understand Hollywood writing contracts.

Most Christmas movies are super sugary and not very well made. On the other hand, there are literally hundreds of good horror films to watch.

Richard Maurer

Classic Horror film poll happening soon, right? Good, everything is going to plan.

As well as Trading Places. (I could have sworn Letterboxd indicated she had seen Gremlins. Mandela effect?)

I'm not sure I'd use the word "sings" when it comes to Star Trek (cf Shatner, Nimoy)... :-)

Shawn Kildal

I more week until Star Trek 2. I can't wait!!

>>123848957

The Shop Around The Corner still has a chance. Cassie said she might be watching the runner up

Shawn Kildal
>>123848957

If Cassie spent this whole month watching Christmas movies and combine it with all the Christmas movies she's already seen, there probably won't be that much more for her to react to in future years. I don't think that issue exists when it comes to Horror movie

Most of us probably have only the theatrical cut to watch along with though. "The needs of the many..."

I also would recommend the Director's Edition. It doesn't change the story at all but adds some nice enhanced visual effects, not many as the visual effects in this movie are overall great anyway. Either way let us know which version you watch so we can match up our copy. Tidbit: the motion picture cost more than all 79 regular season episodes of the tv series.

So we all agree on the Director's Edition for Star Trek yes? I haven't seen anyone saying otherwise. The theatrical cut isn't just inferior, it's borderline unfinished. Director Robert Wise himself referred to it as a "rough cut" and was personally involved in the new version - so it really is a true *director's* cut, that's not just marketing spin. Plus the new 4K version of the Director's Edition just came out last year and looks absolutely gorgeous! (I got the box set) Btw, there are also director's cut options for II and VI. However, they make relatively minor changes and while I generally prefer both over the theatrical cuts it doesn't really matter.

Sorry I just have to correct you here that the DC definitely does more than add some visual effects. There is significant re-editing, dialogue is added, the flow of entire scenes is different. It may not change the underlying story, but it dramatically changes the storyTELLING (for the better).

II, IV, VI, I, III, ............................................... V ;) That said, the few reactors I've seen do Star Trek had surprisingly positive reactions to V so I guess we'll see

Family man is a great Christmas movie!!! glad you watched it.

You had me until you forgot to recommend the Undiscovered Country which is the perfect bookend to the series and crew.. 3 brings modern klingons yes, but literally the whole movie is recapped in 4.

I look at it this way. TMP will provide Cassie with another opportunity to bond with the crew before TWOK...and that's not a bad thing.

Andrew Roach

Not sure about a directors cut, I was referring to the Directors Edition (which I think is what you meant) as only that and the original is available on Prime and while I may be wrong I really don't recall to the best of my recollection any real difference other than effects when I watched a recent reaction. Either way we can both agree that the DE is best for TMP. I do prefer theatrical for the rest however.

Robin T
>>123873496

Yes, the Director's Edition is what I meant - just spaced on the official title

The most important thing the Director's Cut is remove some scenes and moved one short scene to a different place in the film. I do love the extra effects and that we finally get to see the ship built for V'Ger. It is by far the best upgrade of a film from the theatrical to the director's. The theatrical I would give 7/10. The Director's Cut I give 10/10. It is one of my favorite SF films. I know there is a really long tv version but I have not seen that yet.

I have to admit I am not a fan of the director's cut of Wrath of Khan. I only watch the theatrical. VI? I like both about the same.

thansen
>>123832849

I love it, too. It is my favorite Star Trek film. I never thought I would say that.

CG Shunk

OMG don't watch the first Star Trek movie, it was arguably one of the worst movies made. Just go straight to The Wrath of Kahn.

Mark Vaderr
>>123951426

Worst ever made? Have you not seen anything with Tom Green or Adam Sandler? How about The Twilight Saga, or any of the Transformers movies from Michael Bay. There are a lot of movies that are in contention for worst ever made, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is not one of them.

There are significant changes in the editing. The theatrical had a premiere date and runtime set way ahead and could not be changed, but they ran out of time. The edit was in a state of an assembly or workprint cut at the time. Most of the effect shots finished have been just dropped in as is when they arrived, without the proper editing. This also meant some live action footage had to be cut to keep the runtime, because that could be done faster. The theatrical version has been literally a wet film hand carried by the director to the premiere and seen for the first time by the crew as well. They were very displeased with it. It was full of jarring editing mistakes, and flaws. Some scenes took too long, some effect shots didn't start moving in time, etc. They asked the studio to allow them at least a superficial polish before the widespread release, but it has been denied claiming it would signal that the studio has no faith in the movie. The DC is a huge overhaul. Has hundreds of small cuts, trimming down shot sometimes by less than a second or just a few frames. It also rearranges others to make more sense, or to have a better understanding of events or scale. This altogether is trimming the runtime by several minutes, which is utilized to readd several of the character moments to the movie that were always intended to be there. Most importantly a complete scene with Spock. Also, they are fixing some of the shots with missing special effects (no sky on Vulcan, missing Enterprise in several shots, faulty forced perspective shots when they exit the ship, etc) and completing others that could not be finished in time originally. But this is just a small part of the changes. Additionally, they also fixed the audio. The mixing wasn't finished either in the theatrical version, which has been properly done for the DC. Additionally, the 2022 remaster recreates the mix from all the raw elements from scratch, as they have been able to locate all the ADR voice recordings that have not been used due to lack of time for the theatrical run, and also the original recordings of the score in the Paramount Vault. It is a very beautiful, pristine, detailed and powerful mix.

@thansen: I think the best upgrade goes to KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. But this movie is also very high on the list. Haven't seen it either, but AFAIK the longer version is just the TC readding several live action scenes that have been quickly cut due to the contractual commitment for the runtime. Most of those have been added back to the DC.

Gábor Árki
>>123893877

It seems that people who want this reaction to happen are unanimously promoting for the DC. I haven't seen any case made for the TC either. I think it is unfair to call it borderline unfinished. It was truly unfinished. The first, still wet print was literally hand carried to the premiere by the director and seen by the crew for the first time there. And they were not pleased with the result. The other side seems to rather push for skipping it altogether. Frankly, I'm a bit stunned by the level of animosity this movie is receiving.

Dare we hope that the director's cut of Napoleon will yield a similar improvement? :-/ (I don't, but who am I to cold-bloodily murder Hope?)

Robin T
>>123893877

Yes, and I hope having the DC widely available again will help to turn its reputation around. But it's worth noting that even the original cut was better received than is remembered, at least by fans. Adjusting for ticket price inflation it actually still has the highest domestic gross of the original films, and second-highest overall (just a hair behind 2009). Still not the astronomical Star Wars numbers Paramount might have been hoping for, but it certainly wasn't a failure.

Katie Jackson

WOW! Thought I already commented on this one but I guess I missed it. I'm really looking forward to the live and hoping everything made it there on time. Excited about you starting the Star Trek movies and while The Motion Picture isn't my favorite I've come to appreciate it more as I've gotten older. I'd definitely go with the directors cut which is better all around than the theatrical version. Finally The Family Man. I think I first recommended this one 2 years ago and I'm so excited to see you getting to it. It's definitely one of Nickolas Cage's best movies and is so sweet and touching that I think you'll be adding it to your rotation of Christmas movies along with While You Where Sleeping. See you Saturday 👋

Hi Ted. You may have to rent or buy a movie on Prime if you can't find it elsewhere for free, but it's totally worth it to watch the full length reactions in my opinion. I watch the reaction on my laptop and the movie or tv show on my tv, so they're both in my eyeline. I hope you stick with your subscription.

Luke Godfrey

Can't wait for The Family Man reaction. Surprised you hadn't seen it already, but lucky for us we get to watch your reaction to this classic romance movie with a twist. Plus you get to see more Nicolas Cage at his best.

Richard Maurer

It will be interesting to see how Star Trek (TV and movies) does on YT. I'm not going to make any predictions but if I had to guess I'd say they'll be mid-level of what Cassie's YT videos normally do.
