I love your reactions. I joined because of your Star Trek reactions.

Celeste McAllister

What I love is loyalty and dedication of life long friends...♡David♡

Jeff Mar

I love how quickly you went from “Wrath of Khan” to “Search for Spock”… You are a “Trekkie” like us too… It was torture for those of us who had to wait (back in the day) for it to be released in theaters… I know you’re going to love “The Voyage Home”… Those of us who live in the “Starfleet headquarters” area did! Live long and prosper…

Jeff Rogers

As you will learn, all of the even numbered movies are better than the odd number movies... Two is better than one, and four is better than this one.

Just Plain Bob

I remember watching Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in theaters. There was no idea on the part of theater goers at the time that Spock was coming back. As far as we knew, he was dead for good. I was heartbroken, having grown up watching reruns of Star Trek in the 70s and thinking of the crew members as my friends. Leonard Nimoy had published a book a few years before the movies titled “I Am Not Spock” and had been open about his reluctance to reprise the role due to typecasting. This was also before bringing characters back from the dead became commonplace in science fiction. So, when the third movie came out it was a real blessing for all us Trekkies. Spock was back! I remember thinking that they retconned the ending of the second movie because I didn’t remember his mind meld with Bones. I was mistaken, of course. Turns out, at the last minute when filming Wrath of Kahn, Nimoy expressed some interest in coming back. They added the quickie mind meld in the hope he would do so. PS: Years later, Nimoy published “I Am Spock.” In the intervening years he had come to realize what a blessing the show and the character were and how much of a cultural impact they had made. Not only had he made peace with the character, he had come to embrace it.

Wow 1984 was an amazing year for movies!!! The Terminator Ghostbusters Amadeus Once Upon a Time in America A Nightmare on Elm Street Gremlins Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Beverly Hills Cop The Karate Kid The NeverEnding Story Streets of Fire Footloose The list goes on... I guess we have amazing films today as well but so many classics in a single year, over 40 years ago.

Crassus

David was entirely too much like his father in the end. But he went in a way that at least did credit to himself, in a way his old man couldn't have helped but to approve... fighting against the odds to protect his friends.

Kristin D

Yay!!!! Though, I wish Cassie had been able to watch the episode Journey to Babel before this movie. It would've explained Spock's family, and it's a great episode. It's such a delight to see newbies come to Trek so enthusiastically.

Marcos

Excited for Star Trek IV! (You can skip V, 😂)

Darren Young

Montgomery Scott, the patron saint of us engineers.

No, films today aren’t nearly as good in the same quantity, there’s a reason why YT is filled with reactions to all of the movies we grew up with.

Jason Fulbright

Look at you, Getting lost in the drama of friendship, loyalty, honor, death, and life in a sci-fi flick from the 80's. Who'd a thunk it?

Katie Jackson

A list of The Next Generation episodes to get you started. This will probably have to be narrowed down but it's just a start. *Encounter At Farpoint part 1 & 2 *Skin Of Evil *The Measure Of A Man *Q Who (Must Watch) *The Emissary *Yesterday's Enterprise *The Offspring *The Most Toys *Sarek *Menage A Troi *The Best Of Both Worlds Part 1 & 2 (Must Watch) *Family (Must Watch) *Reunion *The Loss *The Drumhead *Half A Life *Redemption Part 1 & 2 *Darmok *Unification Part 1 & 2 *I, Borg *The Inner Light *Relics *Face Of The Enemy *Second Chances *Attached *Lower Decks *All Good Things Part 1 & 2

Justin Samlal

Cass, these Trek reviews are absolutely warming my heart! But also: Uhura (ooh-hoo-ra)

Brent Fugett

This never gets old.... (Audi commercial with Nimoy and Quinto from 2013), Cassie I think you'll like the reference to the death scene at the end.... Lol. For your reference Zachary Quinto played Spock in the reprised movie. Ps: I think you should do a quick reaction to this commercial. 😁. Who's with me?? https://youtu.be/MVoDnGVkWCA?si=IHJ73IOLCSQ2h7wm

Flashbacks to Rocky. Also reminds me of how people pretend that Superman V doesn't exist.

Around 1968 or so we were playing at our friend Gary's house. Then his mom said it was time for him to eat dinner and he bolted off. I grabbed my stuff and went upstairs and found him sitting at the table eating and watching "Star Trek." I watched a moment and then his mother came and said it was time to go, so I bolted home and saw my first episode of TOS! I loved everything about the show but none as much as Spock! Some years later my beloved Sister got me a poster - the one that says: "Everything I need to know in life I learned from Star Trek" Here's one for you: "IDIC" IDIC is an acronym for "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations," the basis of Vulcan philosophy, celebrating the vast array of variables in the universe. I watched TOS and then the cartoons (they call it the animated series lol), then the movies came out!!! "The needs of the many, out weigh the needs of the few... Or the one." This has been my personal motto since then. SPOCK!!! Then TNG The Next Generation came out! YEAH! Brand new - exploring what could be! DATA!!! Then Enterprise came out... I couldn't for the life of me get into it. Deep Space 9! OH YEAH Commander Sisko - to a point! Then MSN had vTrek! So I joined, it was a chance to play any character you wanted! Via email or chat! Ensign Tiraz, Rand a Bajoran; then that evolved into Star Trek: A Call To Duty. Then Voyager was announce and then the news hit that there was going to be a woman Captain! Way Cool! Back then a lot of fans didn't like that for their own reasons. Then it was announces it was going to be Kate Mulgrew! I knew her from Mrs. Columbo and other shows! Excellent! Then the first few shows came out - and many couldn't help but to like her as a Star Fleet Captain Kathryn Janeway!!! "I TOLD YOU SO!" Yeah! The TNG Movies - Star Trek: Generations is a must! Discovery - I couldn't get into either! Prodigy, Lower Decks I might give a try... Now there is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds! It is Thee best Star Trek show that will ever be! Una Chin-Riley!!! Christopher Pike!!! This is how Star Trek should be! But as almost all shows go - there'll be a 'need' for more action, battles, etc. I dread that day when it comes to SNW. Sadly there are only 10 episodes per season and currently they're working on Season 3! So yeah! I am a Trekkie! I have the first TNG Comm badge and Beam me up (TOS) mugs from QVC! Interesting facts: Dad worked on the fenders for the Lunar Rover for the Apollo program. And now I'm working with the Space Shuttle Endeavour. I was operating the lift so Mrs. Oschin could have her first entry into the shuttle. Shortly after she stepped inside, that the first time was when I first realized my families links to NASA, I almost lost it.

Search for Spock? Let me save you the trouble, here he is: 17:25. (Or if you prefer, 33:46). Now that I've saved you all this time, you can spend it reading my own reactions to the reaction. :-) 16:50 Hey, it's Miguel Ferrer! (If you remember him from the big screen, it's likely from RoboCop.) 17:07 For shame, Cassie! Stan Lee is very disappointed in you. 17:21 Well, Kirstie Alley did go through some physical changes through the years... 17:36 Who knew Vulcans spoke Hungarian? 22:44 Quack! 25:24 "They're going to self-destruct themselves?" This would generally be a pleonasm, but... :-) 26:39 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p70ZtYkhqfQ&t=2588s 29:07 Fool! Do you not see Kirk has the high ground? 29:50 Joke of the sadist and the masochist. 30:17 By George, I think she's got it! :-) :-)

Don

Yes this isn’t the best of the trek films but it was such a relief that Spock was brought back. I watched this one over and over again when I was a kid. Really looking forward to number 4. It’s so much fun.

Disclaimers: First, in case I wasn't clear, I was joking; I do not really think that two Vulcans* would be speaking to each other in Hungarian. Second, I do not speak Hungarian, and I would not be surprised if those who do would feel differently, but: If I were to hear Saavik's last two words to Spock at 17:37 in this video out of context, I wouldn't hesitate to identify it as Hungarian. (Much more so, to my non-Hungarian ears, than Benny Safdie's Edward Teller in Oppenheimer.) * OK Trekkies, I realize that those two only add up to one Vulcan. :-)

Gábor Árki
>>126606247

If it wasn't clear, I figured you were joking. I was just curious why you think they were speaking Hungarian. To me, as a native speaker, they do not sound Hungarian, maybe a little like the Swabian dialect that some elderly people spoke on my father's side after living for a century in the country settling in from a German region. Although I can't attest how our language sounds to other non-speakers. From work I do know some are usually surprised it does sound distinctively not Slavic, which they usually expect (it is a completely different language family). At first, I was quite surprised and put off by Benny Safdie's Teller accent in Oppenheimer. To me, it often sounded more like an accent a Slavic speaker would have. Although looking at actual interviews with Teller he does seem to have a unique accent. PS: the accent of Leó Szilárd does sound like an actual Hungarian accent, although he is played by Hungarian born actor Máté Haumann.

Happy Hanukkah
>>126606247

All I was going by is my own audile-mental associations. We'll have to ask Cassie to put up a poll to decide the issue. :-) "surprised it does sound distinctively not Slavic" What?! Next you're going to tell me that Finnish [1] is not a Scandinavian [2] (aka North-Germanic) language! I quite agree with you on Safdie vs Haumann. (And not having known the latter, I now know why I shouldn't give him too much credit. :-) ) I'd continue this discussion, but I found this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBvaeSBwvLo and started being reminded of the Turkish accent. At which point I figure I'll quit while I'm ahead [3], since the only question remaining is who I would offend most, Magyars or Turkis. :-) [1] Yes, I know. [2] Please, no political debate. [3] While I have a head. :-) [ADDED:] I have just reminded myself that we cannot compare further as Von Neumann does not appear in Oppenheimer. I guess Nolan decided he had reached his quota of Martians. :-) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Martians_(scientists)

Regarding Leo Szilard, I have an old collection of short stories he wrote (The Voice of the Dolphins)*, many of them featuring a wonderfully dry sense of humor. An excerpt from "My Trial as a War Criminal," in which the USSR has won the Cold War and "he" is offered a chance to move to Russia and collaborate: "As far as going to Russia was concerned, my mind was made up. Having been raised in Hungary, I had lived in Germany and in England before I settled in the United States, and that is as much migration as is good for any man. Moreover, when you are above fifty you are no longer as quick at learning languages. How many years would it take me to get a sufficient command of Russian to be able to turn a phrase and to be slightly malicious without being outright offensive? No, I did not want to go to Russia." *One can only futilely hope that the Oppenheimer movie would lead to a renewal of interest in this book by a leading physicist, most of whose stories deal with the implications of the burgeoning nuclear age.

Gábor Árki
>>126606247

Actually, you're not that off with Turkish. Hungarian had a lot of Turkish influence over the time. The tribes migrated from the Ugric homeland through several regions before the conquest of the Carpathian Basin: north of the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus, near the Azov Sea, and finally near the Black Sea west of Crimea. They settled in each of these regions for centuries and lived near/together with Turkic people and borrowed words from their languages. Then later, there was an Ottoman occupation in the 16th and 17th century. So, a lot of Hungarian words have Turkish origin and I think there may be some grammatic similarities as well.

Gábor Árki
>>126606247

I would have liked more of The Martians as well. But it was a story of Oppenheimer, and the entire Manhattan project took a back seat. I hope that someday someone is going to make a limited series focusing on the entirety of the project. I know there is MANHATTAN (2014-2015), but from what I heard it's a heavily fictionalized soap-opera with very little historical accuracy.

Happy Hanukkah
>>126606247

Absolutely. I remember some silly comment* complaining the movie did not sufficiently focus on Richard Feynman. The Manhattan Project featured quite a few people who besides being great scientists were also fascinating individuals who could each easily be the subject of their own movies. The focus of this movie should be obvious from its title. In contrast, I have yet to see Napoleon, mostly because (weak-minded person that I am!) I've been influenced by some of the criticisms. A major one is that the movie had insufficient focus and that Ridley Scott tried to cram too much into a mere (!) 168 minutes. (In contradistinction to eg the 1970 Waterloo.) (There was a movie about Feynman, Infinity (1996). It was directed by and starred Matthew Broderick, with a screenplay by his mother. My impression was that while its heart was in the right place, it was distinctly underwhelming.) * Tsk tsk. Be polite. "A comment that struck me as misplaced." :-)

Late-dawning joke in response to your first comment: "Hungarian? Where?" Right there! In mirror! Ba-dum-tss :-)

Why didn't Spock blow up like the planet?

Don
>>126623804

The planet wasn’t stable. But the things on the planet were. Everything aging and evolving quickly was linked to the planets rapid decay. But one the planet is gone they were ok. Anything else “grown” on the planet would also have been ok if it was removed before the planet died. Star Trek science

Scott Macaulay

I have grown to love this movie. It's one of my top 3 Trek films now. I think comparing it to so much crap being made now really raises it up in my view. It also has a lot of canon origins and memes in it.

Robin T
>>126598054

I've been working on my own suggested TNG list and it's quite similar to this. Glad to see lots of support for Family among the comments (not because I think it's important to tie into the movies - it isn't - but because it's a damn good episode). Quieter moments like that rather than big plot events are often what TNG does best. And along those lines I think you need Data's Day in there. And I'd strongly recommend either Clues or Cause And Effect. Also glad to see Relics on your list. Not really among the great episodes but Cassie specifically will love it.

Katie Jackson
>>126598054

I'm definitely open to suggestions on my list but I do think Family is important because Picards family will tie into the story in one of the movies.

Robin T
>>126598054

I mean, it ties in very lightly. When I first saw the movie I either hadn't seen that episode or had forgotten it and the moment worked just as well. It takes literally one sentence to explain the relevant backstory and the emotional meaning is all there in Stewart's performance. That's why I say it isn't important - it doesn't add anything to the specific story the movie is telling that isn't already there. Still, good episode on its own merits so I won't push my case too much ;)

LittleGalaxyBoy
>>126590633

Agree. Indie films thankfully get more attraction now compared to alot of mainstream films that for me at least lack alot of quality.

Paul Rich

Too bad everyone's fave Trek character has so. little screen time,

ContrabandDonut
>>126598054

I'm sad to see Data's Day not on your list, but I respect that chioices had to be made. I'd trade it for The Most Toys. But I think its a very well thought, well curated list.

Katie Jackson
>>126598054

Thank you, I have a revised list in the comments of Star Trek 4. The Most Toys does make it to the second half of my list. Both are great episodes.
