Today on Valve News Network, we take a look at a recent leak of a pre-release build of Half-Life Alyx that kept in all internal non-VR testing tools and commands still built in. These tools now allow modders to create non-VR mods for Half-Life Alyx much faster than previously thought. In fact, with the right files and noclip bound to a key, it's possible to play most of the game using Half-Life 2's weapon-set, however, the question needs to be asked, is it even good?

I find the videos tone to be very aggressive almost accusing those who want to play hla without paying 500 for VR and a upgrades of committing a crime.

Tyler McVicker

The intended message of the video is that playing the game without VR is missing the point, and will not be an enjoyable experience for the end-user.

AtomicTEM

Not enjoyable at all? I mean hla is meant to be slower paced, but the story beats and set pieces are of half life and valve. It may miss the point of VR, but wouldn't it expose a new generation to half life and make them curious of how it must be in VR and 2d half life would great for accessibility.

Believe me when I say this, but I could never imagine playing this game in any way other than vr. The way that this specific game is designed would be absolutely dreadful on a flat panel. You lose almost all aspects of realism from the horror, the gunplay would be far far too easy, the puzzles would be useless or boring, and you would just fly through the game. That isn't to say that I don't think that people messing with the flat panel aspects of source 2 is bad. I would absolutely love to see people remake HL2 in source 2 because that game deserves some love and I would love to see what valve does internally with the engine. Although, after playing this game I honestly can't say I would ever want to go back to a flat half life game. It is a totally different experience that brings the world to life. I do hope that this game will kickstart a push toward more AAA vr games, forcing manufacturers to innovate and lower prices -- making VR more commonplace.

I totally agree with Tyler here. There is something called "Game Design". If there is a game which is designed specifically for VR, the game's feel will not be great. Think of it like huge blockbuster movies. Let's say there is a movie which just came out, and you've been waiting for a story continuation for the last 13 years. You're most likely going to the cinema to watch it, since it was designed for cinema. While you can watch it on a 4 inch phone screen, it's not going to provide that excitement, as cinema does. Same here with VR. I get it. A movie ticket and a vr headset are not comparable regarding their prices, but the analogy is totally valid.

I totally agree with Jacob as well. I'm not sure if I ever want to go back to a flat half life game anymore. The thought itself actually started growing inside me at the 8th chapter, but I finally realised that I NEVER would want to go back to a flat half life game ever again, after Eli gave me the crowbard. That was Valve's intent to do so, and they totally got me. I want more VR half life, whether people like it or not. It IS the WAY Half Life should continue to live on. Most people cannot sympathize with this thought since, they did not experience this. Please be patient. I was a VR skeptic at first as well, but as I've seen Alyx in VR... Well... I wouldn't say NO to a 2D Half Life, but for me, it wouldn't feel as good as this did to be completely honest.

Daniel Serezane

It wouldn't be enjoyable, trust me. If you want it just for the sake of the story, pick a good playthrough and give it a go. If you want to *actually* play it, you have to do it in VR.
