See you next level, huh?

This isn't like most of the monthly updates, but it's probably one of the most interesting in recent memory. For those of you who may somehow be unaware, my humble beginnings as YuuriVoice spawned from a Yuri on Ice Tumblr blog during the airing of the series and as of last night the follow-up movie 7 years in the making is now officially canceled.

I thought I wouldn't have much to say, or that it wouldn't really matter when the plug was finally pulled. I thought I had made my peace, and that YOI's place in my heart was mostly cemented over and left as just a quaint memory.

I thought wrong.

Join me for nearly 30 minutes of reflection, a retrospect on the impact that the series had both personally and for the community, and what appears to be a fond farewell for now.

Memo

I remember my first time watching Yuri on Ice I was 13 or 14 and I still remember how my heart pounded while watching it. I fell in love with the show and the music and the characters. At that point in time I was discovering my sexuality and the show really helped me come to terms with it. I wasn’t from an accepting family but that anime helped me accept myself. I watched Yuri and Victor be in love and realized it was okay. I could be me. I could love who I wanted and I wasn’t wrong for it. I’m so sad this movie never came to fruition. Not just for me but for all the people it could have helped too.

I’m late to both Yuri on Ice and this community but it still had an incredible impact on me. I watched it for the first time in 8th grade and thought nothing much of it, and actually despised it a little. The reason that I didn’t like it wasn’t because I thought it was bad, but because of my personal history with ice skating. I had been getting continuously injured so I was progressing incredibly slowly, if even at all. People that had been consistently training for 2 years were accomplishing what I couldn’t do in 5 and it was shattering me. But one night last year, I decided to rewatch it, particularly influenced by one of my closest friends who was obsessed with the show. And I just, can’t really put it into words. It hurt so much but also felt amazing. I was finally (albeit slowly) letting go of my thoughts of inferiority and self-hatred for not accomplishing as much as I had wanted. I cried as I finished watching it. You were right when you said it truly impacted a specific audience in an incredible way. I’m glad this piece of media was able to help out so many people in different ways :)

I speedran YOI ahead of the last episode thanks to a tumblr mutual in the HANNIBAL fandom of all fandoms recommending it. I was a junior in college, and it was also right before my best friend left for her Spring sophomore semester abroad in Osaka. At the time, she was doing all the classic university stuff a couple of hours away (sorority, boyfriend, partying etc) while I was working my ass off at her parents' shop trying to figure out what I wanted from the world. YOI without a doubt reignited our friendship- we had met in middle school bonding over shoujo animes and musical theater, and those things never really faded. Knowing she did figure skating before she moved here, I practically demanded she watch it over the holiday break so we could talk about it before she left. She LOVED it and it set off a chain reaction of waking up to random pictures of merch, food, and marketing materials she found amongst other updates throughout her trip. We hadn't bonded like that in ages, and it was good to see that side of her again. When IA was announced (and delayed. and delayed. and delayed AGAIN.) we had a running joke that MAPPA was in a dead heat with her boyfriend proposing with no end in sight. Spoiler: they got married this time last year, and when I told her the news today she said, "oh now I'm sad, I thought they canceled that years ago! ...Speaking of cancel, listen to this shit-!"

Summary. MAPPA cancels long-awaited Yuri!!! On Ice movie, angering fans who accuse studio of exploitation and greed. Original anime had massive impact, winning awards and praised for same-sex relationship representation. I read it, not my own words! They had an update on it Edit (11:23): Honestly some of the reasoning is just annoying 🤷🏾‍♀️. I mean I met my now best friend from this series, we both were looking forward to it 😭 YOI honestly have led me to find so many people in my life now that I am so grateful for. The shitty part about life is that things happen that are out of our control. I know all of us have had things happen to us that were not proud of and so on. Yet that's the thing about life, we can't run away from what cards were dealt.

Honestly,I’m sure we all knew the movie wasn’t coming. Though that’s not what has me upset, because change, especially after success, is great but leading on an entire fandom to believe we would eventually get the movie is what pushed my buttons about the situation. If they had just accepted its failure in production and cancelled it earlier, it wouldn’t be too bad. Yuri on Ice had such a big impact on me, which eventually led me to discovering YV and honestly I’ll take that over any movie. But, as you said, although many of us thought we were at peace, we weren’t and we are kinda grieving something that could’ve been but we knew wasn’t coming. YOI will live in heart and I thank it for the friendships and communities that I made/joined because of it

Yuuri, your work DOES have an impact. I've been struggling with some serious sh*t lately, and listening to your characters and especially your comfort audios has really been helping to get me through. That's such a monumental thing...you're just putting out your creations, and then they're helping to make a difference in the life of someone you've never even met. That's powerful. And I'm so glad that you've come so far since you were sleeping on that 6 inch mattress. You deserve it. Never doubt that you are making a difference in this world, and that your fans appreciate you for it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! It was a very interesting reflection. When I first heard the news I wasn’t surprised but definitely disappointed. Makes me wonder what could have been. Especially for a lot of other creative projects that never even got the chance.

One of my best memories around anime, was during the Yuri on Ice airing. I was at a convention with a friend, and we crowded around a small iPhone to watch the new episode. I think it was the Christoph one 😂 but the episode was so fantastic, and then the day after the convention….literally every single person was talking about it. Everyone, in a huge convention. It was a moment in time where everyone had the same enjoyment, and the 180 when everyone realized it wasn’t queer baiting? Probably the best realization in anime history. Been here since the beginning, and I hope you know how much we appreciate you 💖
