Chapter 280

Zack was wholly unsurprised that Allie challenged the new Ascenders to a fight. He probably would have done it himself, though he would have at least waited a little longer, and been a bit more polite about it. First impressions, and all that. But at least this way, he would get to fight them right away, thanks to his partner’s proclivities.

It was oft annoying, but useful on occasion.

The moment Allie teleported the room to the canyon they used for sparring he was already flying backward to dodge the falling table, even as the rest of Team Zero flew backwards to clear the area.

Perfect.

He had been waiting years to find out exactly what precisely Quill could do, and the reveal that he was Matthew Moore, one of the first candidates they’d eliminated, was a shock that didn’t help anything. Zack had investigated Matthew at his Tier 10 tournament and found him to be a fairly standard fighter, no more than the normal number of tricks up his sleeves. It was likely that his mana Concept had more depth and power than had been shown, which would go some ways towards explaining Quill’s feats, but reviewing his past assessments, it still didn’t quite line up.

There had to be something more there, and he was assuredly going to get a glimpse in a few moments.

Allie flickered, returning with a very particular chest that used to be at the very bottom of a carefully-organized stack. A few seconds later, he was out of the clothes he was wearing and inside a surprisingly nostalgic robe. It was heavier than he remembered, having since grown accustomed to wearing same-Tier armor, but the spiritual weight the enchantments carried felt like the embrace of an old friend.

He hadn’t worn these clothes in eighty years, longer in subjective time, but in many ways it felt like just yesterday. It was odd to feel sentimental for a suit of armor scavenged from a rift and that needed replacing every half-dozen delves, but there was a certain level of simplicity and satisfaction inherent to the action. And, it would be nice to not fight teams specifically outfitted and trained to shut down all his favorite tricks.

A couple of back-and-forth pings had established general ground rules for the spar, and by and large they’d hold back on any truly last-resort tactics, full Willpower exhaustion, and any generally grevious wounds. They weren’t trying to kill one another, just feel each other out in the way only Ascenders could appreciate.

Quill, Torch, and Scoop were already outfitted, having quickly swapped to what would have been their newest armor. Allie was off convincing Bulwark to oversee them, and while they waited, he recalibrated what he could use for this spar, and coordinated with Allie to ensure that they would be on as even a footing as they could be. Comparatively little in the way of Intent usage, scaled-back skill potency, avoiding use of their higher-tier skills when possible, and certainly no usage of their Power Talents. Meanwhile, the other three were completely unrestricted. It was impossible to truly return to where they’d been nearly half their life ago, when adjusting for time dilation, but they could at least attempt to be fair. While it went unspoken, Zack knew that he and Allie alike would be taking it a bit easy on the newcomers. It wouldn’t do to end the fight before they properly got their measure.

Zack took a moment to inspect Torch and noted that she was using the shield and spear that she used as Torch, but her armor, while outwardly similar, was far darker and infused with blood mana.

So the blood magic was her main combat power. He would potentially need to throw out a number of strategies he had thought of to counter the pyromancer, but hopefully there was something salvageable from them. Blood was an exceedingly uncommon element to fight with, so there wasn’t much in the way of literature he could draw on for reference if she acted as more than an alternative water mage.

Scoop seemed to fight in line with her bloodline, judging by her armor and frozen staff, which limited the scope of what new tricks she might pull out. A number of news stations had attempted to call her out as a false Ascender, but history was not kind to those who doubted the legitimacy of the mantle. No leader in the past hundred thousand years had allowed a charlatan to finish The Path and represent their Great Power as an Ascender; such deceptions never lasted long and universally disgraced all involved beyond measure.

The moment General Darrow was outside of the canyon, the match began.

In less time than it would take most people to even use a skill, Allie teleported mere inches away from all three of their opponents, her daggers flashing in an attempt to eliminate the Ascenders before they could even properly react. The blades, empowered with her Talent and Domain, were sharp enough to cut space, and anything vulnerable to physical trauma fell before their might.

Her attack cleaved through Torch, bounced off a set of light blue mana armor Quill had summoned, and was blocked by a [Bulwark] the instant before it would have cleaved Scoop in half and she was back at his side before the three had finished reacting.

Had he transferred the durability of his Talent armor to his defensive spells, perhaps? It was difficult to tell how Quill had managed to have such powerful defensive tools, but Allie would certainly tear through them with a few more strikes, even if her probing attack hadn’t finished the fight. Still, at least they’d gotten Torch… Ah, no. The Ascender flickered red for a moment, turning into blood and fixing the infinitely thin cut that Allie had removed her head with.

Then Torch, Quill, and Scoop began to flare with magic as they activated their skills and charged.

Zack cast a pair of spells meant to enhance Allie’s daggers with decay and her body with lightning, his partner appearing just as she was needed for the buffs to actually connect. The next instant, she was gone, and with a sweep of his staff Zack unleashed two dozen [Mana Bolt]s, each a unique aspect to test for weaknesses in their defenses. As they approached the trio, Zack felt a fairly insistent force trying to dispel them and tear his attack apart, but he easily pushed past the effect. Quill cast a [Bulwark] to block the assault, but Zack responded with a force [Laser Blast] to break the shield before it could block the rest of his attacks.

His own spell made a hole through the opposing shield just large enough for his first volley to pass through, before Quill reinforced his shield and the damage closed. The volley splashed without much effect against the blue armor, and from his mana sight, he judged that the sand attack had done marginally more damage than the other spells. None had done much, though. As he swept himself up on a column of air, Zack started summoning clouds of sand to start harassing the opposing team.

Allie was busy jumping between the three of them, forcing them to focus on her and not him. Even then, her attacks weren’t especially firm. After her initial attack, she was simply probing their defenses, wearing them down a bit, rather than trying to finish them off. This was a friendly spar, after all.

Quill was fending her off with excellent sword-play, while Torch and Scoop had each summoned assistance- a clone made of blood from Torch, and a vaguely bipedal mass of ice for Scoop- to keep Allie on the defensive as well.

Zack unleashed his attacks, sandblasting the trio, and Allie made her proper move, teleporting behind Quill and stabbing him in the neck.

Implausibly, she missed. Zack wasn’t entirely sure how that was possible, but she was blocked from an immediate follow-up strike by a sword warding off her probing attacks. He must have had a fairly firm spatial lock in his immediate surroundings, or else Allie would have stabbed the man no matter the distance he was buying for himself.

Quill teleported, and Allie followed immediately behind, a single attack continued uninterrupted from Quill’s attempted escape. The man brought up a forearm to block the strike, but Allie twisted space to still stab Quill directly in the gut.

This time, her attack broke through, but barely. She was immediately forced back by a combination of raw repulsive force and an incredibly large blast of lightning. Zack blunted a lot of the attack with his ongoing sandstorm, the raw power of the assault turning branching streams of sand into slightly muddy glass. He took those shards and exploded them back at Quill but the other Ascender didn’t even seem to notice the shrapnel.

Allie reappeared right in front of Scoop, only lightly singed by Zack’s estimation. Her blades flashed down, but a powerful, icy wind engulfed the area around Scoop, turning Zack’s sandstorm into a blizzard. He reasserted control a moment later, but frowned as Scoop kept contesting him. She must have been expending serious amounts of mana for that.

He’d dealt with worse, and soon the blizzard was a sandstorm once again. Still, it foiled Allie’s attack long enough for Torch and her clone to flank his partner. Allie teleported behind the real Torch, but a coiling tendril of blood manifested from thin air and tried to wrap itself around her arm, forcing her to teleport a few inches to the right and continue her attack.

Suddenly, Quill and Torch had swapped places, but Allie once again followed the teleport and landed a strike on Torch, cutting deep into her shoulder. A geyser of blood lanced out, nearly spraying Allie in the face, but she bent space to make it miss. Then it looped back around, spreading into a blanket that Allie was forced to teleport to dodge.

The blood simply returned to Torch’s shoulder and sealed up the wound on its way in. Zack couldn’t tell if there had been any lingering damage, as even the decay effect, strong enough to rot Tier 27 monsters to dust in moments, didn’t seem to have taken hold. Zack had taken advantage of the momentary weakness to force sand through the gaps in Torch’s armor and was currently turning them into miniature whirlwinds, trying to sandblast Torch’s eyes into paste, but the moment he first tried the helmet had filled with blood, and he refocused his efforts to re-open the wound Allie had inflicted but they were closed before he could do any real damage.

Allie had returned to harry Scoop once more, but had been stymied by the Ascender riding around inside her summoned elemental, and Quill’s continual attacks. Though Zack rendered the ice elemental into rubble with just a few moments of focused sand-blasting, that didn’t do much to help his partner. Even attempting to cut open a huge swath of space had been parried by Quill, a move that stumped both of them. Torch’s clone wasn’t making things any easier, displaying enough combat prowess to keep Shadow from staying still for even a second with its reckless charges.

Over to his side, the real Torch had pulled her way out of his sandstorm and was quickly closing in on him. Hundreds, even thousands of blood pellets, like a [Water Bullet] but harder than steel, were already pelting him which forced him to drop his attacks and put up defenses. Just as she was just about to reach him, Zack was suddenly elsewhere, as Allie teleported him to the opposite side of his storm compared to where he had been.

Quill took advantage of Allie’s momentary distraction, and struck at her with his sword. Two copies of said sword, each made of neutral mana, also closed in on his partner, as did a wicked [Ice Spike] and a spear thrust from Torch’s clone. She gracefully backflipped, passing through the space which didn’t exist between all the attacks.

Zack formed a rope of sand and sent it at Quill, trying to tie the man down. As it connected, Quill’s armor, followed almost immediately by his mana swords, transformed into a hardened crystal, and a blast of wind and repulsion pushed the sand away forcefully enough that Zack nearly lost control of it.

Torch re-entered the fight with Allie, stepping in for Quill as the man suddenly lost all weight, and was sent tumbling through the sandstorm. Then, he usurped the sand around him and began riding the wind. His sword shifted subtly, and he thrust it under himself like it was a flying sword. Zack didn’t even have time to react as the unstoppable force was suddenly within feet of him.

Allie was forced to abandon her engagement with Torch and Scoop to pull Zack out of the line of fire, but he left a parting gift for Quill in the form of a targeted joint dispel and mana bomb, each right in Quill’s path. Quill narrowly dodged the trigger by ducking out of the way, but Zack activated it manually, and sent the other Ascender tumbling. Unfortunately, it looked like the armor he was wearing hadn’t so much as flickered, but hopefully he had come out on top in the mana exchange.

All three were burning mana at a truly prodigious rate. He knew that Quill, or rather Matthew, rather publicly had a Concept that boosted his own mana regeneration and that of those around him, but he hadn’t expected it to be so strong. Their Minkalla run had ended with Mind Over Matter, so he could no doubt keep up the effect nigh-infinitely, but that didn’t explain just how the effect was so powerful.

A flash of red caught the corner of his eye. Blood poured out from Quill’s form, a veritable waterfall of the substance cascading into the valley. Torch and her clone waited at the bottom, directing the veritable tidal wave of blood into a cohesive form and sending at him and Allie. The world turned red as the combined attack barreled down on them, and Zack’s panic spiked.

Fuelled by the sudden shock, Zack blasted past Torch’s control over the spell, disrupting it far more easily than her clone had been, and-

And very nearly used his Tier 25 Talent to turn it into an illusion. He mentally cursed Allie for the restriction that only really affected him, and very lightly called upon his Intent to snuff out the entire working. It collapsed in on itself, splashing into a surprisingly large drop of liquid mana. Zack dismissed his Anchor, and then there was no sign of the massive attack.

All three of Torch, Quill, and Scoop froze for a split second in surprise, so quickly most people wouldn’t even notice it, but Zack punished it mercilessly as he whipped his sandstorm back into high gear. Blades of sand raked across Scoop, forcing the mage to raise a potent barrier of wind to deflect it.

Before the Ascender could raise a barrier more solid than just air, Allie teleported in next to Scoop, but the fox burst into a cloud of snow and flew back towards Quill for cover. Zack stilled the air and called up a hail of fire, forcing Scoop out of the elemental form in a scramble.

She attempted to teleport away, but Allie was already on her, and Zack countered her next half-dozen skills as she tried to save herself. Then Allie’s attacks landed, scoring lines across her back that bubbled with caustic mana. Torch moved in mere moments later, wrestling with Zack’s spell with sublime control, but to no avail. She made an additional clone and sent it towards Zack, while the first charged in and warded off Allie’s follow-up attacks against Scoop. After Allie dodged the first attack, the spear broke into a dozen questing tendrils of blood and forced Allie to teleport out.

As the new Torch clone approached him, Zack was simply moved to the opposite end of the battlefield without so much as a flicker, maintaining his minor sandstorm with ease.

It was then that Quill made his move. Summoning an orb of total darkness to hand, Zack felt reality sharpen and the local gravity increased substantially, disrupting his flight and attack spells alike. As he stumbled in the air, both Quill and Torch launched themselves at him, and Scoop fired a glittering ray of ice that he was able to fairly easily counter, fizzling it into a bit of chilled mist.

Allie appeared in front of him, intercepting each of Quill and Torch’s main attacks with a dagger each, but the ribbons of blood and two additional swords went unblocked, incredibly.

Well, he could take care of that.

But to do so he needed to release his lingering control over the sandstorms, regretfully releasing Scoop from the last of the battering sands. In exchange, he usurped one of the crystalline swords and used it to block the other, then summoned an aura of lightning to lash out at the encroaching tendrils of blood.

The lightning conducted down the tendrils, only to be negated as the blood turned into scarlet flames which he lost control of. That was negated with a mix of earth and ice mana, and he counterattacked with a sun [Laser Blast], covering for a barrage of crystal, ice, and metal [Shard Volley]. The blood warrior simply tanked most of the attack with her shield, cutting the solitary remaining ice shard in half with a flicking tendril of blood and sending it spinning into the distance.

He also unleashed another scouring blast of sand at Quill, beginning to abrade at his armor until Scoop entered the contest with an attempted dispelling. She was partially successful, but Zack maintained enough control over his spells, and usurped a small measure of her own, to change the scorching heat of the initial attack into a frigid assault partially fueled by Scoop herself.

He didn’t escape wholly unscathed, his own armor being rimed with frost. With a flex of his skills and Intent, he shed the clinging ice at an unfortunately high cost of mana before Scoop could grab into it and punish him for his maneuver. It wasn’t enough to fully save him either, as Quill and Torch relentlessly pursued his moment of weakness. Allie intercepted all of Quill’s attacks, the man having re-summoned the sword he’d usurped, and Zack dispelled the spells empowering Torch’s attacks.

He also attempted to dispel the clone attacking him, but it was weirdly resistant to his attempt. The struggle for control still opened up enough room for Allie’s cloak to fly from her shoulders and tie the clone up, leaving only the real spear to nigh-effortlessly pierce through all of his layered defenses and score a deep wound in his torso. Simultaneously, another gash opened on his leg, though Zack couldn’t identify what had caused it.

Inside of him, his blood began to roil as a foreign force sought to claim it, but he flushed out the attempt with a blast of dispelling healing mana. Space fractured around him as Allie punched through the spatial locks they were under, and then they were elsewhere. Instantly, the three enemy Ascenders began to chase them down, but Allie had moved them far enough that they still had a few moments to breathe. Honestly, it was impressive they knew so quickly just what way they’d went.

“Mental effect on Scoop’s ice, seems less threatening than it is. Separate Quill from the others, his Concept has to be what’s keeping them going. Once we take one of them out the others will fall quickly,” Zack said as he patched up his wounds, preventing them from worsening until the dedicated healers could see to them. A punctured gut and severed femoral artery. He had dealt with worse this week.

“The clone is sturdy, more than it has any right to be. Scoop has more summons up her sleeves, it’s not just the basic ice one, or from a normal skill. Don’t get caught by her slows, they’re a tad chilly.” As she spoke, the violet cloak that entangled Torch’s clone dematerialized and then reappeared around Allie’s shoulders, no worse for wear. “Hey, this is fun, right? So much better than just telling each other what we can do.”

As he looked to their opponents, Scoop had reverted to her fox form, staff held in her mouth, tiara stopped from falling off by one ear, and sporting a number of cuts along her flanks that Torch patched up with blood magic-based healing. They each had some form of crystalline armor ability, Torch with golden crystals that radiated blood mana, Scoop having frozen her fur into what looked like ablative ice armor, and Quill used… Now that he had a chance to study it, it wasn’t just summoned crystals from crystal magic, but mana crystals, not that it made any sense. His floating swords registered the same.

Did they coordinate their defensive abilities for aesthetic purposes?

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Zack smiled as he prepared another spell.

They needed to take out one of the trio at least, and between Quill’s general nature as a frontliner and Torch’s status as a phoenix, they’d be the hardest to eliminate. Granted, their ground rules had included Torch tapping out if she would otherwise trigger a resurrection, but it would be foolish to assume that was all she’d have as a healing ability.

Allie swept through, separating the trio and pulling Torch and Quill off to the side and into a functionally-inescapable spatial dome, leaving Scoop for Zack to focus on.

He withdrew Codex, and after a moment of communing with his growth spellbook, settled on a plan of attack. He fired three lava-aspected [Cutting Halo]s, dedicating the rings of molten stone to ruthlessly hunting down Scoop. Just as the attacks reached her, she skillfully dispelled the magic sustaining the rings with [Dispelling Wind], then froze them solid with a surge of frost.

Zack immediately sent a pulse of earth magic at the now obsidian rings, and violently shattered them before they could hit the ground. Scoop shielded herself, naturally, but even as Allie was fending off two Ascenders and two clones, she used her spatial control to turn the expanding cloud of shrapnel back on itself and curve around Scoop’s shield, shredding through much of her armor and puncturing her skin and muscle. Scoop stayed upright and summoned a pair of elementals to sweep her away, but Zack usurped the spell from her and redoubled his efforts. Sound rattled her bones, shards of glass lacerated her face and limbs before melting and encasing her in a crystalline cocoon, and lightning left her limbs spasming.

She fought back, and Zack very nearly lost control over the spells he was using to keep her immobilized, but he held firm. He kept pushing inwards, looking to sever her limbs, but she managed to literally freeze him out. Still, a moment later, he received a ping that she was too spent to continue.

Zack released his hold, and Scoop dropped to the ground. She shattered the glass encasing her, then limped off to the sidelines. There, Bulwark was already working on patching her together as she watched the rest of her team face off against Allie.

His partner was still doing an admirable job keeping Quill and Torch contained, but Zack could tell that she was stretching herself to do so. Still, she could hold them long enough for him to charge up something really impressive. A dark mass grew before him, empowering a potent yet constrained stormcloud with the spare mana left in his growth staff.  Two hundred thousand mana ready to destroy anything it encountered. Once it was ready he unleashed it, the cloud nearly as solid as stone without even a flicker of lightning to indicate its true nature.

Allie teleported back next to Zack, grinning madly even as she bled from a dozen wounds, just as Zack’s stormcloud reached Quill and Torch. Allie had done her job and prevented them from escaping, stopping any attempts at mounting a defense.

Quill leaped in front of the storm-orb, but instead of having his armor blasted off and knocking him out of the fight altogether, his blue crystalline armor turned black for the briefest of moments. Quill extended a hand, and a beam of black nothingness shot out and intercepted the stormcloud, cutting through it and lancing towards Zack.

With a resounding boom, the jet black beam cut through the roiling storm, detonating the spell structure and causing the entire thing to erupt in a massive explosion of lightning, deafening thunder, and winds strong enough to strip a mortal to the bone. Curiously, the beam turned to a more normal blue-white six feet away from Quill.

The first bolt of lightning struck against Quill’s pitch-black armor without so much as a ripple, but the armor returned to its white-blue crystalline form in time for the second, third, and a dozen other forms of attack to crack and break away the crystalline armor.

Finally.

The armor reformed nearly as quickly as it was breaking, but Allie was merciless in punishing the few gaps it did open up. Zack directed the flailing explosion as best as he could, trying to coordinate lightning, thunder, and winds to strike at weakened points for his partner to exploit. It was challenging, as Quill’s counterattack had dispersed most of the attack, but he still made it work, and Quill took enough direct hits from Allie that he was surprised the man hadn’t tapped out.

But instead, he simply maintained that inexorable, overwhelming beam of mana. Codex had spun up a multi-layered shield, but it was breaking under the concerted assault. Zack tried to usurp the spell, but it slipped between his metaphorical fingers faster than he could properly grip it.

One shield fell, then two, and three, and finally, Zack returned Codex to his spirit before they might get hurt. Instead, Zack reached out with his considerable mana control and a trickle of his Intent to pull on the structure of this spell, and take it for himself.

He formed a small force field around his staff to disperse the beam, but the cost even for this small deflection was draining him. Fortunately, his staff was absorbing the waste mana of the spell at a tremendous rate, but not enough to make up for his own expenditure.

Waste Not.

Want Not.

His Domain was all about efficiency, and he knew he could outlast any mage in a battle of control and attrition, let alone a melee fighter.

Instead of fighting for control over the wasteful spell, he simply created a weak point in the spell and let the mana ribbon and feed his shield. It still did tremendous damage, but it was well within his control limits to deflect and block. The longer he battled the spell, the more he realized how much more of it there was, how much mana was being spent on this single ability. It was sloppy, too. The mana was controlled well enough considering how much of it there was, but it was the kind of control that Zack would have expected to see from an experienced delver, not a veteran soldier.

Not from an Ascender.

It didn’t make sense.

Just as he felt he was about to burn out his mana channels to keep up with the battle, he messaged Allie to help him, and instantly, a dozen knives lodged into Quill’s armor, forcing him to end the struggle. Only a scant few had managed to actually strike flesh, but it was enough of a threat that he couldn’t afford to stand there and attempt to overpower Zack.

Her attacks of opportunity still left Allie open to counterattacks from Torch, who was ferociously attacking with four clones. His partner had done an excellent job avoiding what was, by all accounts, five exceptionally good spear-fighters working in perfect harmony, but even she hadn’t gone unscathed. She was a lot better off than Torch, though. Allie was perhaps the best dagger-wielder in the Empire, even before her command over space was utilized, and she’d torn the golden crystal armor to shreds, even cutting off several pieces of armor underneath. Torch wasn’t bleeding despite several gashes on her body, and while her clones were made of blood, their lack of armor meant they had taken far more attacks, and bands of decay were spreading across them like ink in a glass of water.

Allie dodged the first spear, teleported around the second, flipped over the third, sliced at Quill from ten feet away to bait out the fourth, and landed an actual attack that broke through the blue crystal armor as the fifth attack grazed her side.

Zack was impressed. Normally, when someone tried to stab Allie in the head, they missed by a few feet. It didn’t make it past Allie’s armor, but it did force his partner to turn her attention back to the squad of Torch instead of pressuring Quill.

Quill, for his part, froze in place as Allie’s [Paralyzing Strike] took hold, and his movements were somewhat jerky. Despite that he managed to start moving sooner than Zack expected and he knew they needed to step it up.

Feeling ragged but determined to win, Zack infused his steps with lightning to rush toward Quill, with a plan in mind to end this fight for good. He withdrew Codex and called to hand a carefully-constructed [Piercing Shot] infused [Mana Slash] formed from light, plasma, and metal. He’d used the combo often in the past to pierce even the most potent of armors, and this would be no different. He empowered it further with his staff, its mana reserves, and even a non-trivial amount of his own willpower. Quill attempted to dodge, but the spell was not so easily avoided. It connected, and sliced through the crystalline armor, tore a gouge into the armor beneath, and nearly severed Quill’s leg at the thigh.

Quill grunted in pain, but that wasn’t Zack’s goal. With his armor down, and bare flesh exposed, Zack pulled out his favorite trick he had found while on The Path.

[Inspect Reserves] was a minor divination spell, used to analyze the specific structure and characteristics of spells that reserved mana. Few people used it.

When Zack used his Talent to aspect the spell to mist mana, it did rather the opposite: any active reserved spell would cause the reserved mana to dissipate in the spirit, often causing an opposing fighter to lose more than half their mana in an instant. Used later into a fight, it was oftentimes an instant win. Given the mana Quill had expended, he could not possibly have much mana left, and could not regenerate more through his Concept in time for it to matter.

No one could fight without mana, not at this level.

Using a paltry three hundred and twenty-six mana, a small white ball shot out from Zack’s hand and hit Quill in the exposed thigh, doing visually nothing, but accomplishing everything.

Retrieving his rapier from his ring, Zack ran up to stab Quill in the skull. Clean, quick, and there was no way for him to defend against the attack, not with the disparity in what spells they had boosting them.

Quill barely even seemed to notice.

Just before Zack’s blade hit Quill’s skull to end the fight, his left hand came up with impossible speed to grab Zack’s blade, even as the armor reappeared far too quickly. Zack tried to pull his blade away, but the man was too strong. Zack wasn’t the strongest person around by any means, usually just utilizing [Arcane Manipulation] to fake it, but Quill was holding onto the Tier 27 blade Zack had completed the Path of Ascension with, in his bare hand without it leaving so much as a mark.

Still holding on to Zack’s rapier, Quill lifted his own sword and swung it at Zack’s neck, faster than he could possibly dodge. It was only thanks to Allie warping space to her limit that allowed Zack to drop his blade and escape from the clutches of Quill.

Codex, even in his spirit, was throwing out dozens of improbable theorems for how Quill managed to rebuild his armor so quickly, but he didn’t have time to pay attention. Allie teleported him out of the melee where Torch was ready to run him through from behind and they regrouped.

Or no, that was the clone. It only had a spear and shield. It had become proper flesh at some point, instead of a mass of blood, but he couldn’t tell the difference between it and the original.

“Well fuck me sideways and upside down. That combo always works. Did you fuck it up?”

Zack didn’t dignify her surely rhetorical questioning of his abilities, but instead shared what he had learned.

“He's incredibly strong. Stronger than a pure fighter should be. Don’t risk taking one of his attacks head on.”

“Well the blood babe isn’t any easier. I did my dagger trick to the head but she’s still going. Barely even slowed down.”

Zack wanted to frown, but before he could, he felt a massive spell engulfing their surroundings.

Allie reacted the moment he flinched and teleported them miles into the air above the valley.

A valley that was no longer there.

The entire mile-long valley had slammed itself shut like the jaws of an earth elemental.

The display of raw power involved in reshaping a landscape ten Tiers above them so quickly was mind-boggling, but before he could properly adjust, he felt the atmosphere around them fall under Quill’s control as well. The pressure began to rise, and millions of air blades began to form in an area that spanned miles to each side.

A desperate move, but Zack sensed an opportunity to turn a trump card back on its wielder. It had to be a talisman of some kind for that large of a working. Most likely, an attempt to overpower him with raw mana, a move that had failed time and time again.

He always enjoyed when he could snuff out his opponents hopes and spells in a single move.

It was just efficient.

Want Not, he told the world with his Intent, and the world responded, redirecting the spell responsible for the working to him.

Power flowed through him, and Zack struggled to get it under control. As the total mana rapidly blew past five million he expected the flow to stop but the power kept coming, and a struggle turned into a losing battle, then into an uncontainable torrent as the mana blew past what he could control.

The moment that happened there was a massive pop of mana, and then Zack knew only darkness.

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch! ʕ•ᴥ•ʔゞ゛

MinE

Zack kinda got screwed with the rules of the match. He doesn’t know how ridiculous Matt’s mana regeneration is, and his tier 25 is the only combat applicable talent that is being restricted.

Bob Bryan

Did Zack just try drinking Infinity?

Michael Younger

And Matt immediately pops his Senior Ascender like a balloon... The End!

Bunny Waffles

Ooh, it is always a delight to see Matt hard counter abilities predicated on the normally fundamental concept that people have to run out of mana at some point.

Polaris

Lol! Zach is gonna be so pissed when he find out Matt is ENDLESS!

Redgidor

Looks like Zack tried to drink from a fire hose and lost. 😈

DowagerOfVeils

It's even better because that particular spell is a net benefit for Matt given how his regen works

Dylan Alexander

In this situation Zack may be a wizard, someone with a clinical mind when it comes to mana but Matt is a sorcerer, mana is him.

Neil

It's interesting to see how Matt was such a hard counter to Zack, but in turn Matt + Zack will probably be completely absurd.

Bob Bryan

Probably not. Matt is an ally and teammate after all. Jealous, possibly. Interested, definitely.

Teatime42

Hah, he took himself out XD

Vayash

Haha. The definition of eat yourself to death.

Domy

Good fight

Gavin

Oh baby he thought 😂

Derze

Yay

Lucas Posner

Did… did the “halving” of Matt’s mana bring him from 1% to .5%? Which brings him from 100% per second to 200% which is basically a tier up?

SodaBoBomb

Mantis, I genuinely mean this, your fight scene are among the best I've ever read. I don't know how you consistently come up with new stuff, without going overboard and while keeping in line with each person's powers. Dodged through the space that didn't exist between the attacks? Poetry. I'm only sad about the cliffhanger. :(

Havokk

And theres Zach thinking hes drinking from a garden hose when in fact its the largest high pressured fire hose made

Raymond Horn

You can't outlast Matt only overwhelm him. It's always fun when people try to beat Matt through attrition, I mean surely he's got to run out of mana soon, right?

Psyren1596

Thanks for the chapter!

Michael Olson

the mounting desperation is delicious

Tetrasimplex

Seeing zack completely fail to understand how much mana they have and thinking he's wearing them down is legitimately hilarious.

I loved the way that you could see they could have dealt with Matt much easier if they knew what his talent was. It makes it so great that it’s been kept secret.

InsaneSam

Zach is going to find Matt's Talent and Concept absolutely disgusting. They could not be more different it seems. Zach outlasts opponents with incredibly efficient mana usage and Matt outlasts anyone who tries to win endurance battles with him by shitting out billions of mana and not caring.

Fleetpanda

No it was more a theoretical halving. Light assumed that the majority of Matt’s mana was tied up in reserve skills and that he’d get rid of all that. Matt doesn’t use any reserve skills since channels are more effective for him, so Light’s trick did literally nothing.

Luciaron

I’m sure Zach will have fun playing around with what he can do with all that Matt mana

Alex

His Domain was all about efficiency He's the anti Matt

Aztracity

aight that fight might be my favorite so far.

Firinen

You can be as efficient as can be, unlimited wins.

MikeL

Was expecting Melinda to be on hand for the heals.

Skyra

It was not a short chapter, but damn it felt short.

The Grey Mage

Speaking about Aster being a false Ascender, I get the situation was against her, but it feels like she doesn’t have anywhere near as good a showing as the other two, and it also feels like that’s all she has.

Novel_Rabbit

You can absorb all mana? Who Decided That?

Polaris

Oh I didn’t mean that he would hate him or anything. They are just polar opposite. Exacting precision and mana conservation vs. chucking planets worth of mana at the issue

Jason

no Matt's mana regen is a fixed number when current mana goes under 1% total

Alex

His efficiency coupled with unlimited mana? Yup, that would be impressive. Then again, pretty much everything is impressive if coupled with Matt's mana

zenot funr

Matt's just like mana production goes burr

Kain

Both L&S were pretty hard countered shadow’s an assassin that excels at minute manipulations and hitting weak points going up against a juggernaut that can brute force her manipulation and an amorphous blob that looks like a woman with 0 weak points to hit and Light is a finesse mage used to out lasting his opponents with efficiency going up against literally unending well of mana that can also punch him real good.

C. Mantis

A lot of people are saying this so I might buff that portion but shes a support who is directly countered by Zack and was separated to be taken out early. Its hard to show off there IMO.

Alex

Well, life isn't fair. Besides, he was an ascender with time to spare even without that talent.

Alex

... Can't wait for Monday. I want to see their reaction to Matt's crazy talent

Istyatur Elestel

He thinks it's hooked up to a tanker truck, not realizing it's connected to a water main.

Havokk

Thinks hes hooked up to a river only to learn hes hooked up to the ocean

RedeyeA

Will MLA usurp the gem girl from the tournament's aesthetic for their ascender names? Zack pointed out that they all have crystalline defenses. The gem girl hated Quill, but maybe she has gotten over that by now.

Jason Hardman

TYFTC! Spotted minor error in phrase with a missing word, "cohesive form and sending at him and Allie", likely should be "cohesive form and sending it at him and Allie"

Jason Hardman

Looks like Zack took on more than he could handle :D

Namorat

Now that was fun! I always love reading from the “enemy's“ perspective 👍 looking forward to learn QTS's new names, by the way.

S

So, my understanding is that it effectively disperses all mana being used for reserve skills. If he wants those reserve skills back, he needs to reserve currently available mana to re-enable them. For many, that is effectively halving their available mana. This isn't halving mana capacity, just available mana to be used. At least, it would if Matt was normal. Instead, Matt uses very few reserve skills compared to most and has unlimited available mana anyways.

ALEXEI

I love the series but tbh most of this fight was underwhelming to me till the very end. Why do both Matt and Liz spend the entire fight fighting as just melee fighters I thought they were supposed to let loose I thought they would test the waters then go all in but Matt casts nothing offensive till after aster is gone. Aster being very underwhelming is another issue. It just feels like all the effort of making the fight interesting went to light and dark while the mcs just chased them around with melee weapons and reacted defensively. Matt should have started using offense much sooner.

Fozzy

This is a badass chapter!

Havokk

one possible edit in the line "He had been waiting years to find out exactly what precisely Quill could do" that might flow better using either "exactly" or "precisely" instead of using both in the same sentance

Serran

The battle was incredible and I am happy to have read it. The way they feelt each other out and adapted to the abilites of the others was especially good. I mean, it is what you need to be able to do if you are going to be an Ascender but the way you pulled that presentation of was beautiful. Also completely in line was the end. Sometimes you got to flex and the fact that Matt has about eight times as much mana to throw around in a second as Zack has in his pool needed to be shown.

WillPowah

Every time! This happens every time! You release some absolute banger of a chapter and now I have to wait till the next one!

The Grey Mage

I get that, but just in general it feels like Aster is always less impressive than the other two, and while her lack of power has seemed impactful to the outcome of a fight, Matt and Liz lacking her support doesn’t usually feel that impactful. It feels like Light and Shadow v Torch and Quill, and also a support mage. Without Aster, Matt and Liz feel worthy of being Ascenders. Without them, Aster doesn’t feel worthy of being an Ascender.

Fozzy

Edit: what way they’d went Should be: which way they'd gone. (2 grammatical changes)

skewness7

You could give L&S some feats of renown without peer, because at this pace they will just be known as the ascenders between mana boy and concept uncle

Dominic Pernicone

Efficiency in the face of Infinity, how inferesting

Sam Joy

Fantastic

ALEXEI

It just feels like the point of the chapter was more to show off light and dark And next chapter will be Matt and lizz, which I'd be fine with but it feels like they let aster go without even trying.

RedeyeA

I am thinking Opal or Diamond for Matt, Ruby for Liz, and Diamond or Quarts for Aster. Opals look closer to what I imagine neutral mana looks like, but diamonds are known for their durability, and their denseness corresponds to the singularities of his domains. Also, I don't know that many crystals, so there is probably one that looks more like ice for Aster that I haven't thought of.

Discordian23

I feel like aster really needs to play into her illusions more enemies are gonna target her more especially since you can't really hurt Matt thru all his defenses and Liz is practically immune to damage and also a phoenix. Aster needs to be extremely difficult to target like fighting a blizzard. There should be extra asters out there doing shit asters disguised as Liz clones meanwhile the real asters chilling behind Matt not even actually being targeted

S

@C. Mantis, you don't necessarily need to buff her here. You just need to find a time in the future to really show off why she is an ascender. This has to happen both on her own and in a team. Right now it feels like any time she is pulling off the impossible it is off screen (defeating the rift challenge for instance). It has also never felt like her support is necessary. Ascenders must stand on their own. Matt and Liz do that. It makes it hard to show the power/need of a support mage. Perhaps in the war Aster can support non-ascenders? Single handedly turn the tide of war through supporting the normal troops? The problem is I don't think she has that power right now. It feels like "oh, she can also single handedly beat high tier dungeons off-screen". From the on-screen stuff, Aster just isn't that special. Even her debuffs never end up changing anything. Probably because it is hard to show the audience how a debuff really helped against elite opponents (works great against swarms of low leveled).

Esch

I don't think you can overwhelm Mat any longer (in his Tier bracket at least), with his mana generation bolstering his defences anything short of a Death Star Laser being blasted into his face will be shrugged off.

Drakken17

If Matt makes a guild I can see Zach being in charge of the budget. Can't have him Wasting infinite mana

Fake Name

I am more inclined to the armor aspect of their crystals. After all, what is an empire without its knights?

Dureke Sanchez II

Matt probably had some reserve skill active, but all Light did was free up additional mana generation for Matt, not dispell his mana.

Scott Felton

Just wait till they team up.

Havokk

I can see Zach's eyes twitching as he lecture Matt yet again on not being wastefule and Matt just saying.. shut up and have a few billion mana

S

Building on my previous point, Matt and Liz are not really well suited to winning large scale battles. Their main use it taking out enemy elites freeing up elites on his team to "punch down" and build momentum. I can see Aster one day taking the roll of controlling a large scale battlefield the same way Duke Waters does. The problem is she is nowhere near that yet. Effectively, Matt and Liz would be Aster's support. They prevent the elites on the other side from taking over while Aster completely controls the flow of the bulk of the battle. Aster moving into battlefield command/support style roles also works well with her eventual goal of going into leadership. Also, yes, Matt and Liz do have large scale attacks. However, they are nowhere near controlling an entire battlefield, just turning the tides.

MikeL

Shadow is 1 free teleport, 3 control space, 25 teleport anywhere by creating a waypoint. light is 1 turn spells Arcane, 3 change Arcane spells cast to other element. 25 change spells far away once again to a different element.

Alex C

New patreon app is a pain, I can see that there are comments, but scrolling to see more than a few immediately closes them.

Fake Name

Yeah that is an issue that geniuses have to face in real life when compared to better geniuses, sometimes you are just the guy standing (Botticelli) between Michelangelo and di Vinci.

Tanner Gaskin

She was, right? My understanding is that Bulwark == Melinda

austin kutz

Unless the wording is used to demonstrate Zachs personality

austin kutz

"You actually think you have more control than me?"

JoshCalmick

I see that a lot of people feel like Aster is the weak link. I definitely agree. It makes sense for her to go down this chapter, but I would like to see a chapter or 2 this arc about her realizing that she is the weak link and working to rectify that.

austin kutz

You can make it so she makes up for the difference in focus and instruction time that Matt and Aster got from both Luna and Kurt. Aster demonstrably got less attention and training from the two managers and I think any differences in base abilities can be made up for in a few decades or centuries of training and possibly her getting extra dragon essence to further refine her bloodline

Polaris

Melinda is wellspring

Violet

They're fighting for real, but part of fighting effectively is not showing your entire hand, so both sides were slowly doling out new tricks to see what might stick. Gathering information through smaller exchanges at the start of a fight is a standard trope. Also, Matt and Liz are letting Light and Shadow show their hands first, which means maintaining the information advantage throughout the fight. That's important, since they're fighting against combatants with a century of experience on them. Since Matt and Liz are both specialized for endurance combat, letting their enemies set the tempo just makes sense until the enemies start to flag. That just works out a little weird here because Zach likes to let his opponents wear themselves out, too, and Matt... complicates that strategy. Finally, Light hard-counters Aster and partially counters Liz. He takes a lot of the spellcasting capacity they have completely off of the table, which forces Liz into melee and puts Aster out of the fight. That's why they're being forced into close combat.

Bryan

Do we know how much mana Matt's concept gives now?

Bryan

I noticed that too. I figured out you need to go to the bottom of the page to open them.

Wrathwind

The empire has teams that work it improve their weaknesses I’m sure this will come up then.

Matt H

This chapter demonstrates why Aster more than anyone else needs to have extremely rare, defense-oriented natural treasures like the Stygian Gossamer Matt used shoved down her throat. She also needs some very targeted growth items and gear created to increase her survivability. As a support mage she'll be targeted and focused down first just like a healer would be. She needs to be able to survive until Matt and Liz either put down the enemy or can protect her and it looks like she's not at that point yet.

Havokk

Meanwhile Eric and Deena each grin as they look across the table to the other members of team zero and simply say "Pay up"

Luke Scheffe

Matt does use reserve skills at this point, mainly because his channel skills can’t handle all his regeneration.

Jacob Gordon

Zack has mana control. He wrestled control of elements mla are experts in away from all of them, sometimes while being far away. I suspect that's pretty an incredible feat? Ally has control of space and dagger combat. So I think they do have stuff. It's just not as impressive or flashy as infinite mana and being able to casually look at someone who doesn't need to breath, and convince them they are drowning while in space. I hope next chapter we get to see mla talk about how shocking light and shadows feats were too though. In this one we really only got Zack perspective.

Violet

Fun. Aster definitely needs more tricks in her toolbox (which shows, here), but MLA as a whole are outperforming what I expected from them (although how much of that is because Light is trying to beat them using the one strategy that will absolutely never work I'm not sure). Light, buddy... At some point, surely you should have come to the conclusion that the amount of mana in use indicated that you had incomplete information and stopped depending on it? Guess we're seeing a downside to his preparation. He's too formulaic.

PrometheusDarkflame

Zach: “I can’t waste a single point of mana!” Matt: “Is a billion mana enough for this lightning bolt? I feel like that’s probably fine. Maybe I’ll add another billion or so.”

Sheepdog

This is good soup

Zachary Blevins

Yep that’s what happens when you overfill a balloon. It pops.

PrometheusDarkflame

“I’m probably winning out on the mana exchange!” “He’s burning through a lot of his mana, he can’t do this for too much longer!” “He’s got to be near empty soon!” “Surely he’s low now, right?” “Right?” Meanwhile Matt is still at the same amount of mana he started the fight with.

Mownmbasa

Well i suspect that is their role in this story, to showcase Matt and Lizz's power, to give a sort of a standard to follow and to get a sense for their power. Watter boy cannot be used that way until they reach T35 which i suspect will be awhile. Honestly i am slightly underwhelmed by Matt's power. His talent should be overpowered enough to literally make him an ascender by itself without any fluff. The fact that Luna trained him the way she did should multiply that by many times over. The way i see it reserve mana can literally allow him to spam channelled buffs into oblivion and become an impenetrable fortress of power and durabillity + speed. I feel that the author reached that point with him a couple of times and realized the situation and reigned in his powercreep. It's hard to balance a talent like his. As much as he keeps trying to say Lizz is stronger than him, the fact is that multiple times he could've overpowered her. Even his T25 talent seems like a nerf in my book, so unless the author comes with a cool way in making it seem op i will consider it a heavy nerf and a useless talent upgrade. Could've gone so many ways with it, mana conc above the normal limits, technique infusion/empower, skill infusion/amplification, effect of channeled skills increased, Intent expansion, etc. I mean i was more impressed by his performance in the golem war and game war between the kingdoms than his performance as an ascender. I felt his power there against the "many" like the fortress defend he did in the beginning of the war. Everything after that felt like a constant dance of upgrade and nerf. Gave me League of Legends bad vibes hahaha. I'm fine with it but i just hope he eventually puts Matt on his rightful pedestal of number one.

John S Barksdale

I agree with everything you said Stephen except Matt and Liz not really being suited to win large scale battles. If you were referencing them winning without catastrophic casualties by the other side (including maybe the support that are typically spared), I can agree. If it is pulling a Waters and just taking out every enemy, both are scarily capable of that. Remember it is Liz's greatest fear to become what blood mages before her have become (individuals that wipe out planet after planet). Matt, on the other hand, could already do the same but could do so in infinite different ways if given the right talent or talents (which they are about to start getting). But, seriously, great post. You said most of what I was thinking and gave me new things to think on!

1FantasyFanatic

Absolutely incredible! Great decision to show this from Zac’s point of view.

S

10 * 2^(tier-3) = 41,943,040/s at tier 25.

Zachary Blevins

One down one to go I hope the next chapters is from shadow’s point of you I want to see the two of them, wear her down with their teamwork Liz is eternal and Matt is endless I want to watch them where the teleporter out

Havokk

Thats Matts Talent not his concept. I dont think we have ever seen actual numbers on how much his concept refills others

rpatz

Thank you!! Do you remember what chapter this is from?

1FantasyFanatic

I thought it made complete sense. Light and Shadow are hard counters to a support mage. Light to dismantle her spells and shadow to teleport right to her. Makes sense to me.

Nick Pincus

You can't outlast infinity sorry zac, your tactics are hard countered. If you knew what you were fighting you might be fine but none of your tools are built for this.

John S Barksdale

Regarding Aster, I feel like she is better viewed if you imagine her impact on other teams. Imo, her addition would have pushed teams that had to drop off close to the end over the hump to becoming ascenders. In other words, on a different team than Matt and Liz, Aster could become an ascender and therefore should not be questioned regarding her qualification.

Drakken17

I wonder how much practice he has gotten since he just doubled his mana. That would explain his control being weaker right now

Havokk

In the tier 10 tournament Light assessed Quill as being great when he can plan things out but if things dont go to plan he will have a hard time adjusting and coming out on top. It was great seeing that assessment getting flipped right back around on Light

Shawn

Aster feels like a wet piece of paper here. If she can't manage some impressive defense in a spar then I'm worried about her chances in a real fight with the elites of other great powers. I think you are trying to show that Zach is a counter for her and she's mainly a support but I think Aster needs more of a showing to prove herself instead getting thrashed early and limping off with her tail between her legs.

MinE

One of most hilarious things about this is even with the current tier gap, he would have better luck trying this on Luna than Matt. Matts mana regeneration is so high that the only reason I didn't say the emperor is he can copy matts talent.

Stormbuilder

Zach is probably going to be mildly offended by the sheer inefficiency

MinE

I think the last time it was mentioned he could give 40 mana a second for basically free, so he can probably give 100+ mana a second before pulling from his willpower reserves.

Bryan

Pretty sure 40 mana a second was given I think around minkala

Jessica

I can't wait to read the reactions! This was a FANTASTIC fight scene! I thought it was perfect!

Zachary Blevins

I think that’s coming at level 30 he will have the same outfit as a level 50 at that point it’ll be a level 30 going up against level 35 and then when the war expands it’ll be a level 30 going up against level 40 and 45 And if he’s forced to ascend early, it’ll be him at level 30 something going up against people at level 55, 65, 70

Ethan Cartlidge

While I agree his combat prowess seems like it should be higher. I'm not sure how the primary effect of the T25 talent will play out but the secondary effect reflects his long term goals of sharing his mana reserves. It wouldn't be very interesting if Matt could use a lock down space channel spell and then a siege level destruction spell and one shot everyone within 5 tiers of him. I think what we'll see is Zack helping Matt with mana control and he'll eventually be that powerhouse. I don't see how Liz could ever be stronger than Matt unless she some how learns to use people's blood while it's inside them and just pops people.

S

His tier 25 talent is far from a nerf. It's direct combat applications aren't great, but its utility is unmatched by anything I can come up with. At least, it will be at later tiers. Possible use cases: 1. Easy upgrade of mana each tier. (low priority, but nice) 2. Funding his future guild. Being able to just drop dense chunks of mana crystals will be a big help. The alternative is having planet sized reusable mana stone vaults to store mana to be used by crafters. The space requirements and cost would be the limiting factor eventually instead of his production of mana. 3. Keeping rifts fed. Need to setup farming rifts? Drop a mana crystal to feed it so you don't have to go top it up or spend a lot of money on rechargeable stones. 4. Selling. Need money? Sell mana crystals. Way easier than going somewhere and charging them in person. 5. Need mana for the war? Drop a mana crystal. Need Malinda to have infinite mana for her overpowered shenanigans? Drop a mana crystal. Matt's mana power has been limited by him only being in one place at a time. This is a game changer. Oh, he also gets access to swords which keep up with his tier whenever needed. It isn't on Hastor's level, but that will be useful when finding weapons of his tier becomes more and more difficult. Don't get me wrong, a lot of this doesn't matter right now. Like all of Matt's talents, they start off pretty weak and then at some point they become the most overpowered bullshit in the realm.

Jacob

Lol. Bad intel will bite you in the ass every time.

John S Barksdale

A few people have mentioned how powerful the combo of Zack and Matt will be. I think Allie and Liz have some interesting synergies as well. Allie can teleport a "Liz" anywhere and Liz will be wherever she is teleported. No matter how many Liz's there happen to be. She could be simultaneously sparring in the rift with everyone while also commanding and leading wars on innumerable planets. And in each spot, it will actually be all of her with all of her powers...not just a clone.

Adam Andersson

I think you should take a page from the multiplayer videogame balancing book, here. The best way to buff or nerf a character isn't usually to outright strengthen or weaken them. It is often to make their counters more or less viable, or to change the environment to give them room to show off their abilities/allow opponents to outflank them/take away or open up sightlines. She needs more opportunies to show off.

Zachary Blevins

No, she’s the support and she has always been the weakest link. You don’t need to turn her into something else? If anything, you could’ve simply added a tit for tat A quick inner change where Zach says are you all right? And shadow says i’ll be fine i’ve had worse a dozen times, but this really stinks as she pulls ice shards out of her stomach. That way she would’ve been knocked out, but she still got her own pound of flesh That, and I always thought it was funny to imagine her as an icy little porcupine

S

Wait, can he directly enchant mana crystals? That would also be interesting. I wonder if he can turn them into talismans or whatever.

Caelum

Did I almost exhaust your mana? Yeah, I was at less than 1% there at the end.

John S Barksdale

It has been a while since our group has been in large scale battle so it is easy to forget how overwhelming and destructive Liz's blood abilities can be. Liz is a planet killer. So when she can now be in numerous spots with full power at the same time, how do you stop that? Sure, you could build a team designed specifically to counter her, but so what? Kill her on that planet and Allie will have her on 20 different ones. We saw in the talisman selection and minkalla visions exactly how scary and deadly blood mages can be. None of them had phoenix resurrection abilities nor the ability to not even need resurrection because you can't really kill "all" of her anyway.

Kain

I feel like that would destroy her spirit or something maybe a handful but even that’s a long shot maybe imo

Clara

It sounded like Light countered any of their (non overcharged) ranged attacks with ease, which meant resorting to melee, and Aster getting fully negated

Elaine

good chappie

Rui Lourenço

Don't forget these are two other people with absurdly broken talents. And in subjective time they've been training for a while as Ascenders without the restrictions of the path. Infinite Mana is OP, but Matt doesn't yet have too many spells that use it efficiently.

Rui Lourenço

Zach's third talent would've made this fight basically impossible for MLA.

Aaron Hardin

I was also under 1% at the start, but who cares about that.

Rui Lourenço

Eh, they tried. But Allie can't get hit by ranged stuff and Zach can just yoink their spells. This is showing how fucking broken Zach and Allie are. Our protags are broken but everyone is broken at Ascender level.

skewness7

That would be terrifying. A real cockroach cultivator. Interesting interaction if she can swap places with Matt with her ring.

LeapoldJKLOL

MAL just feel very Basic, like everything they do needs to be balanced for some reason. Light and Shadow don't feel that way. They pulled off some really cool stuff, but MAL was exactly the same as they have always been. They get their Skills and that is all. Its hard to put into a coherent thought, easiest way to describe it is Light and Shadow get Ascender Shenanigans to buff their power and do cool stuff. MAL doesn't have that. I mean shadow is Teleporting all over, bending space doing all kinds of crazy stuff. Light is Countering or Taking over a big portion of every skill cast, his intent is basically a Skill Steal it looks like, then there's MAL, just taking hits, throwing out a skill or two here and there, looking kinda basic. I guess Making your opponents knock themselves out is a strategy, its how they got thier wins vs strong people.

Tsorov

Also, all of their skills haven't been upgraded yet. LS skills have been upgraded to tier 36 i think, and they trained with them for a few hundred years. So it is pretty good what MLA are showing

Rui Lourenço

To be honest, I found Aster's level was fine here. She's a support mage vs a disruptor and an assassin. That's a terrible match up unless you heavily overpower the opposition. And Aster has yet to use all the goodies that are going to be thrown at her now that she's an Ascender.

Rui Lourenço

He'll make it is life's purpose to train the innefficiency out of Matt.

Vega

When your skill counters people with tons of mana, but is hard countered by anyone with the designation mana: yes

MikeL

I keep closing the story page and reopening. Really annoying!

Fozzy

Comments aren't working well for me today so I apologize for starting a new thread. I agree with others that Aster came off a bit weak in this fight. If memory serves me correctly, I thought she had the mindset that Matt and Liz started fights slowly so the best way to support her family was with early, overwhelming power. And she chose a legacy with that in mind. As a newly ascended mage, I didn't really expect her to have survivability. But I expected her to be an early offensive threat LS had to respond to.

MikeL

I’m surprised Aster hasn’t leaned into Lunas specialty, of breaking Apart spells. There must be a way of using her debuffs. I guess without void it’s difficult.

MikeL

The last line of the chapter should have been “quick somebody find Wellspring.”

Ryan Romano

So i'm guessing Matt hasn't had time to go get his mana concentrated before the fight? Shouldn't he have gone to use the machine before he reported in?

hachetnif

I do not think that's true honestly Zach is a pretty good counter against Matt because Zach can steal mana he can do so much with it and if he had his 25 talent it wouldn't have been a fight she would have just turned his armor into something else and so much more so in my opinion it is just that Zack is handicapped and does not know his opponents abilities that screw them over

Neil

That isn’t a very fair comparison, they were handicapped for fairness. MAL haven’t been geared up properly and don’t have decades of training with their T25 Talent and Intent. Once they are able to catch up a bit, I think it will be pretty even without the handicap. Stealing mana from somebody who treats it like air isn’t nearly as impactful as it is against others.

hachetnif

Yeah that's a funny part Matt's control is actually pretty insane for how much he manages

RedeyeA

That took him like a week to recover from last time. This is mere hours after the ceremony.

LeapoldJKLOL

L&S controlled that fight basically at all times, they forced MAL to respond to them the entire time. At No time were either L&S really in any danger. L&S never had to respond really, even when MAL did something it was easily countered. MAL's most winning Strategy vs strong opponents is to get them to knock themselves out.

Ryan Romano

That was at least 100 years ago, I'm sure they've refined it more, plus his being lvl 25 should offset a lot of the strain. But you're correct its been like maybe a day since the ceremony, wouldn't it have made sense for him to take the few days for him to get his mana concentrated and then deal with the strain so he could report in and be ready for any deployment they'd have for him, i mean I'm sure they'll spend a lot of rift time training first, but he's going to need to go do the machine anyway before training because any mana control he gains from the training will need to be redone after using the machine

Coorsbie

I don't think he needs it anymore. Doesn't his black hole form naturally compress his maximum mana? I think he accidentally created an infinite power loop.

Rip Woodham

I think Aster's performance was realistic. She was up against Light, with an assist by Shadow. Aster is support in a team of 3 and dependent on one element. Light is half his team, as well as older and more experienced. This goes to show Aster needs to develop more survivability and resource generation that isn't dependent on her teammates and can't be as universally countered. She's also simply the most prone to either dominating or being dominated in an exchange, imo, and it should be expected against Light/Shadow here and cut off from her team. As for our team being conservative and not trying to overwhelm them immediately... well, give Light and Shadow some credit here - they kept up the pressure really well. But it was probably a strategy by our team as well - let them think it's a battle of attrition, let them be overconfident, etc. The longer it goes on, the better the position they are in, and the worse position Light and Shadow are in, as long as they don't reveal too much of their hand too soon. Of course, they probably didn't think Aster would be taken out so suddenly. Frankly, Aster isn't on the same level as Liz and Matt in my opinion and they've just been able to ignore it. She's an Ascender, yes, but of the 3 of them which would have the hardest time Ascending alone? Aster. This has always been the case imo because of her focus, her reliance on one element, and Matt's mana battery.

Ryan Naquin

This is a spar. Zach may be seriously injured i think they'll call it here.

Zachary Blevins

You might be right the description of that and then all he knew was darkness that doesn’t sound like something you just walk off But we have a pretty good healer on staff

lockx

Probably none due to the whirlwind of ascending and all the stuff related

John Anastacio

All correct. Isolated Aster = Dead Aster. Hopefully she'll get treasures and gear and spells from completing the Path that would help her escape and survive in case Shadow can't pull her out or reposition her.

ALEXEI

That's my problem is it doesn't feel like mat does try he casts one offense spell the whole fight until the very end. If you stay defensive you build no momentum and they are free do build pressure, of course aster was in trouble Matt just played defensive and used his sword till she was gone. Again I get he doesnt want a blowout he wants his teammates to feel strong and they are it just felt to me like Matt especially was overly passive to make his pop off next week bigger.

Alex

It was heavier than he remembered, having since grown accustomed to wearing same-Tier armor Why would they wear same tier Armour? MLA usually used stuff above their tier (though I suppose at the end it got too expensive to upgrade their growth items enough) But still, with all the empires resources, why are they wearing at tier Armour and not above? (also, stupid patreon app isn't letting me scroll through the comments. The moment I try scrolling it puts me back to the chapter instead. Quite annoying)

ALEXEI

Does it ruin my experience. No but it was noteworthy to me that they felt one dimensional.

Alex

Cause she's support. That's why theyre team ascenders. Also it's sparring and not life and death. Makes people act differently.

lockx

*theoretical* halving because usually someone would have reserved mana skills rather than channeling everything the way mat does

PoeticSaint

You gotta re read what his talent just did for him in the chapter where hw went over his new talent and the experiments with it. He can concentrate his own mana now by exhausting it and forming mana crystals out of the expended mana.

Skyra

Issue was not really concentration that is logarithmic curve so benefit of any single concentration this high tier is not that great. The issue is that he has bad mana control for an Ascender by having his mana doubled every other decade and no time to practice to truly refine it like they had. On top of that he had doubled his mana pool just before the ceremony.

Skyra

Mana would be still limiting factor even with Matt next to one of her. And also we don't yet know if the consciousness gets cloned as well or if she is multitasking like with regular blood clones.

Alex

LS can show their real talents and fighting styles in the war. Holding back is preferable, but showing everything is also fine. MLA will still have to handicap themselves, because Matt's talent needs to stay secret for as long as possible so the empire can prepare for the true war (and Matt can level up a few more times before the true war too)

Alex

He shouldn't have been below 1% at the start. He generates 1% in a fraction of a second. So after even a second of not using his mana he would have more than 1%. Not much more, but still more. (only way he stays consistently below 1% is if he always dumps all his regen into his AI when he's not fighting, crafting, recharging stuff. Can his AI even still handle his mana? 40mil per second is quite a lot for a T26 skill)

Alex

Yes. It sucks so much. It worked for like 2 minutes a while back and I got really exited, but now it's back to being shit. I kinda thought that maybe my phone is the problem, but if I'm not the only one, then that's not the case obviously

Skyra

Matt also have reserve skills for quite some time after all he has stupid amount of mana not only stupid amount of regeneration he overtook regular mage at tier 17 if i remember correctly with amount of mana he has in one percent compared to full amount mage has. And on top of that skills that reserve mana take from his maximum so his regen takes a hit of only one percent of what is reserved.

Alex

Thx dude, it's working. Still annoying, but better than nothing :) scrolling to the bottom of the story fixes it. Also, showing newest comments/replys on top is dumb. Makes reading replies quite annoying cause you have to read from the bottom up

Alex

I remember he doubled his mana, I don't remember if he drank a concentration potion.

Skyra

Biggest issue Matt had was that he took a hit to the mana control since he doubled his mana just before the ceremony.

Alex

Yeah, Matt really managed to hide his talent pretty decently. Long preparation and planning is the exact opposite of his brute force drown them in mana approach. (and his real fighting style needs to stay secret the longest. LS, just as Liz and Aster are fine if they show their real talents etc. Holding back is preferable, but not necessary. Matt's mana though will spark a true war, so he needs to keep it secret for as long as possible, so MLA is still not gonna be allowed to go all out, even now that they became ascenders.)

Alex

Yeah, but let's not pretend that his mana control is all that great even with practice. It's good, but still far below what you'd expect from a regular ascender

LeapoldJKLOL

The Problem is MLA seem very much constrained by Rules to keep Matt from Being OP. But no one else is bound by those rules. Are they Going to Sacrifice Aster every fight so they can pull off the Outlast them Strategy?

Alex

I want a chapter from Shadows pov, but I also want to see everyone's reactions of the fight without waiting for friday

Alex

Idk, maybe he just passed out. It happens.

Fleetpanda

They need to restrict themselves to the tier of the battlefields they fight in. Rn they’re an ace in t25 battlefields, so they can’t use anything above that

Alex

OK, but Matt's mana is so crazy it's literally gonna change the entire universe, you don't simply expect that. You will try to find more reasonable explanations first (like, he has good regen and a higher than normal pool) his talent breaks everything they know about talents. It's gonna change the entire universe.

Nicolas Maganto

When he learns Matt couldn't lvl up his mind capabilities from the get go he will be mind blown

Alex

He's gotta run out eventually right? Those were some of the best parts of the chapter. No sane person would guess Matt's talent. It's a talent that's gonna change the entire universe, you'll come up with a couple thousand more reasonably theories for his output first

Alex

Knights in sparkling armour

BigFun

Quill was the talisman ascender, and no talismans were used in the spar.... Wonder when L&S will notice that

Alex

When they first introduced the names I thought Matt would be Wellspring. The name just fits his unlimited mana so well

Alex

He's not quite at billion yet :) 40ish million per second right now I think. He will be soon though

Alex

Zach and Luna may get along well. I can already see them debating about how to fix some tiny inefficiency somewhere.

Alex

Yeah, he already has a higher mana regen than a T50

Jonathan Robichaux

I've always thought aster, and any support mage, has been written criminally underpowered and weak compared to everyone else

Alex

That makes sense I guess. I somehow assumed that only applies to personal cultivation considering only elites are strong enough to use above tier gear anyway. Your strength determines the gear you can wear. Pretty fair. And at tier gear is kinda shit for ascender level combat. Using only at Tier stuff means that people will use above tier natural treasures to upgrade their bodies or sth, and it benefits mages that only use skills. Skills aren't restricted for example.

Jonathan Robichaux

Yeah I remember thinking that everything he assessed on Matt and quil were just terribly wrong lol

Wes

They would be a great match. hope we get to see them meet one time

Fleetpanda

Water boy can’t ever be standard. He’s basically anime MC levels of power. He had a domain (the next stage past intent) at an early tier than Matt got his intent. He’s T31 and fighting other T35 ascenders

adam1

Matt blew past T50 regeneration 10 tiers ago.

ZaA

I mean.. it was a 1v1 and she's mainly a support mage who had no teammates due to their tactics. I think this went how it should and will be a wakeup call that they need to work on counters for these situations. I also think it might be a wakeup call that they should jump straight to the abuse of Matt's mana (like he seems to do at the end of the chapter) earlier in any real fight against powerhouses because next time it won't be her limping off, she will have died due to carelessness.

Fleetpanda

He can only do it to spells he controls. It’s a big boost but it’s not like he’d be changing CPA to death mana or something

adam1

Zach T25 talent to keep changing spell mana types would give him versatility, but I still think he'd be out of luck against Matt. Matt's defense would help against a lot of mana types. Zach would probably do a lot better against Liz if he could use his ability to better infiltrate and degrade her blood.

Mashiara

Just goes to show that MAL's chances of winning basically goes way up the longer the fight goes. At this point, you have to kill them with overwhelming power right from the very start to have a chance. I think Aster's power was nullified by LS pretty well. Personally, if they knew MAL's power set, I think they would have targeted Matt first. All in all, great fight.

Haikaiko

Liz was the phoenix warrior, and she didn't cast a single fire spell. Aster was the freeze queen, she she didn't eat a single bowl of ice cream during the match. They all held back.

Vayash

I really really really want zack to ask about the bandage talismans from the t10 tournament. I think itd be fun 😇

Haikaiko

The issue is: we're supposed to believe that *any* contest of magic against him would be more effective than a mosquito trying to stop an eighteen wheeler by ramming into it. He generates more in a second than entire cities full of mages can pool together in a day. He shouldn't EVER feel even slightly contested by a single mage in the raw brute mana category, even if they're fellow Ascenders, even if they heavily out tier him. Heck, he struggles just finding channel spells that can handle his thoroughput, and even the T50 emperor admits that when he needs quick mana asap, Mattery is the brand he trusts.

Havokk

I have noticed a lot of comments on Matts mana control, even Light commented on it, and some even mention that Matt hasnt had time to rebuild his Mana control since his tier up. But I think we all missed something here in that Light is assumedly one of the best at mana control but when he tries to actually manipulate all the mana Matt has put into the wind blades it blows past his ability to control that mana in a matter of seconds or less. Matt is controlling up to 42+ million mana a second and is able to still show at least the control of an experienced delver.

Rip Woodham

Yeah, but they're about to go into a war... Light's strategy to isolate Matt and Liz and focus down Aster isn't exactly a master stroke only he can come up with. It's sparring yes, but that goes for the other side as well. This is the only way you can prepare, and Aster died in that preparation, and not because of some fool move like Light made but because she's simply much more vulnerable when cut off.

Lucas Sevenants

Hey yall, new patreon sub here. Is there a schedule here for chapters? I'm fresh from royal road and I'm not sure if there is a set schedule or anything. Just curious!

Dureke Sanchez II

Mondays and Fridays for regular chapters at 1pm MST on the dot. There's also gonna be 'Echos' chapters (side content reaction to them completing the path) every Wednesday, same time. Same time as RoyalRoad, essentially. Welcome btw! Glad to have you :)

Dan

Monday and Friday 3pm est

Daniel B

Monday Friday around noon pacific time

TimeDrawsNigh

Echoes will still be Wednesdays but not every week according to Mantis, gives them more time to polish each side story chapter.

Aaron Martinez

Shadow controlled the fight because her powers are literally battlefield control.

S

@LeapoldJKLOL, It looks like that to us because we have been following them for awhile. Liz can heal from just about anything, Matt can spam strategic level spells and Aster... is cute. Anyways! From the point of view of just about everyone in world, Matt and Liz definitely perform ascender level shenanigans. One thing to keep in mind that the brokenness of an ability is limited by where it is on the scale of Talent > Domain > Skill. What talents/domains would you have MAL give up in exchange for what other powers that allow more "ascender shenanigans"? Skills are too weak to provide what you are after.

Jeppe Fiig

Waste not, want not meeting Unlimited Mana... And it broke Zack 🤣 infinity cant be wasted

Itsigu

Does he? I was under the impression that reserve skill also effect his mana generation since it effectively lowers his max mana.

SwiftFate

Zack: How much mana DO you have? Matt: Yes.

Mario Reiman

im guessing quill should remain a Talisman + sword fighter for until his talents get discovered. Otherwise those valley moving effects would give away his actual mana pool waaay too quickly

nknesflkesfe

The funny thing is, Lights domain isn't about efficiency, it's about not wasting mana. Which is a subtle but important difference. For most mages it means efficiency. But for Matt? If he's not using his full regen he's wasting mana.

Gabriel Night

The moment he finishes getting regeneration and upgrading it he will be all but unkillable.

Mownmbasa

@Stephen Weinberg While i agree on surface that his talent might have useful economic applications, we are forgetting a very important aspect of this story: constant strife and war. He will probably never be relaxed or free enough to enjoy crafting or creating all his grand plans before his ascension. Even rift mana feeding, it was an awesome little slice of life in Matt's mana shenanigans that's all but forgotten by being suffocated with constant battle. Even that chapter felt like it was censored after due to the implications of his power and the op nature of it. Personally i would love to see 2 things happen: either he stays in this form and shows more of his economic power for the Empire or, steps it up a notch in terms of fighting prowess and becomes the Empire's beacon to rally around.

Gabriel Night

Yes lights strategy is now anything novel. The difference is the ability to execute the plan. Shadow is all about controling where everyone is. She is a teleport specialist.

Evernap

I was thinking about this And wondering if they were gonna try to get the others to bet against MLA. Since LS have been stuffed full of treasures st this point+experience. Then making sucker bets. Where they give up a tiny bit if they lose but a large pay out to balance out the long odds. Playing it as them betting on "their" team regardless of the outcome.

Dion Crump

I suspect it has to do with how fit the armor is for the person. The same tier armor fits like a perfectly tailored glove while having over tiered gear is more clunky

Alex

If same tier Armour is better, why is everyone using above tier stuff? Above tier stuff is more expensive, nobody would use it if same tier stuff was superior

Joanne Hans

Hurry up Audible Book , I want to listen to that fight. :D

Raymond Horn

Only if Melinda is around. Even if he has an upgraded regeneration eventually the healing cooldown will come into play.

Alex

Maybe also throw in that they were the ones to "create" the bandage skill in the first place :D that's just as impressive as his AI bandage talisman

Matt H

Because the Path is a race against time. To make it people need to be fighting multiple tiers above their own and also advancing through the tiers quickly. They would either need Talents dedicated to creating armor or growth armor to keep up with the pace. Otherwise, the best they can do is to use armor that's up a tier or two so it still does something when fighting up so many tiers and just dealing with the added spiritual strain.

Alex

But the war also potentially makes them fight against people that are their equals. And they're not gonna stop challenging rifts above their rank. Forcing everyone to use same tier gear will drive the price up crazy high to squeeze every bit of strength out of the materials. Just like all the minkalla specific gear that was made to be at the very limit of T14. It's unnecessary and difficult to sustain on such a large scale as a war

Matt H

It also felt odd that Zack was able to batter down and overpower her ice, an element she's gone all in on, with sand, just one of many elements that he uses. I thought there was an implicit trade off between versatility and sheer power/expertise when focusing on multiple elements vs. just one, but it seems like Aster's come out on the losing side by having limited versatility and still being overpowered by other elite fighters. After rereading the chapter the best and only thing Aster seems to have accomplished was slightly freezing Zack's armor for a moment allowing Liz to stab him. Beyond that, all of her attempts to control the area or dispel attacks seem to have failed. And even worse, it didn't seem like Matt and Liz were struggling any more in the fight once Aster left it which is a really damning indictment of her effect on the battle.

RedeyeA

When Matt’s sword shifts and he uses it to fly to Light, that implies he is using his growth sword. I thought he stopped using that sword a few tiers ago because he couldn’t get it upgraded to t25.

Skyra

Highest upgraded regeneration has overhealth effect same as Melinda healing, but only on healing done via regeneration limiting factor are number of upgrade orbs and rate at which mana gets consumed.

Etia

on the path they had limited resources, after they finished they effectively uncapped those, so they'd be able to tier all their growth eq. up

RedeyeA

It has been a few hours since they have completed the path. The standard way to upgrade growth items is to schedule a visit to a hallway full of materials and hope your growth item eats enough to tier up. They were traveling for two years picking their friends up after reaching peak t24, so maybe they had time then, but currently this mention clashes with the last mention of the sword.

Skyra

I did not miss that, only pointed it out because if this match happened in a decade Light woud get steamrolled.

Itsigu

He can't use it for combat. But for utility purposes like a flying sword it still works fine.

S

I think Matt is on the eventual path of becoming emperor, uniting the realm, and building a path for ascending that can be used by all. I think if he ever ascended, it would be the end of the story. We can see this being his path from some clues in the story: 1. His work towards aura. He has developed the technology to create aura at scale which is needed to get people to Tier 15. Even better he proved in minkalla that unaspected aura is possible. 2. The discussions of using his mana to tier up planets. Not just the tier 47 to tier 50 but all the other ones as well. With enough planets at each tier, they can mass ascend significantly more people. Matt can bring more value to people through economics than through war. In fact, I would argue that he could contribute significantly more to the war economically than by fighting himself. I actually appreciate the economics/experimentation more than the fighting. Having Matt be balanced in this way is in my opinion good for the character and the story.

Violet

Oh, sure, the actual specifics of his Talent are unreasonable to guess, but Zack isn't even thinking like his opponent is an Ascender. If Matt didn't have mana to spare, then spending mana like he does would be amateur hour. An Ascender isn't going to make stupid mistakes like that. Therefore, if Matt is spending mana like water, he's doing so because he can.

RedeyeA

It seems like it is the sword he was using for combat. The chapter says that it shifted subtly, not that he pulled out another sword.

Evernap

@The Grey MageThink back to the Soddus fight. She was essentially rag dolling a character with 2 different bloodlines with innate flight. She's a debuff/buff mage. Zacks kit is based on finding the exact counter to your abilities. Armor stripping Matt, Lighting conducting Liz, and for Aster removing her buff targets. Remember her kit is about making enemies desperate enough to burn resources.

Evernap

@C_Mantis Definitely what I thought. Zacks ability to ruin her summons was significant. Plus Zacks experience with resisting dispels. It definitely feels like her character/kit isn't as well expressed in the story leading to a feeling of lesser impact.

Kain

After rereading a bit I think something that contributes to Aster being seen as weak/ an extra is that in all of lights rumination on how to make the fight “fair” the fact that it’s a 3v2 is never brought up once. He goes over L&S’s advantages but never factors in “well they have an entire extra ascender” as a point to counter balance L&S’s extra time at tier 25 he acts/thinks as if the numerical advantage doesn’t exist and then aster gets ejected from the fight first thing and Matt and Liz still end up winning. Just an observation I had. This honestly seems like a continuation of the issue “is the team ascender level or are the individuals” like if we consider L&S as a unit = “ascender level” and MLA as a unit = “ascender level” his thought process makes sense but if each individual is at “ascender level” completely disregarding a 3V2 disadvantage is insane.

Caelum

This is a very solid point.

Robin Richards

When outside of combat Matt uses his AI to mine crypto...

adam1

Support builds support their team and are the least suited to being caught out on their own. They'll always appear weak on paper since they won't be the ones actively engaging, but shine when they need to give a critical edge to the offensive component of their team. This was just a bad matchup for Aster, fighting two mobile controllers who can negate her own attempts at controlling the fight at the same time that her tank protection isn't able to protect her. Similarly, Allie and Zack are still in trouble against Liz and Matt, as Liz and Matt are the two components of their team that can overpower and outlast control-type strategies. Even without Zack taking himself out of the fight, I think Matt and Liz would have carried it.

adam1

His Tier 25 doesn't concentrate his mana, it just enables him to store it effectively. His Intent has a slow concentration effect, but I bet that will combine with the concentration device. Between the two effects, his mana concentration should skyrocket given enough time to use them and recover.

adam1

On rereading, it is interesting that Zack comments on Matt's poor mana control, but not that the spell effects or raw mana he's stealing seem to be weak. So it seems Matt's mana concentration must be enough that he doesn't seem too far below where a Tier 25 fighter build should be.

Jonathan Campbell

I love the fight, kinda wish it had a partial "WHAT THE F.." right before the mana pop and blackness. Also wish I had waited a month before upgrading to 10$ for the one month's worth I could spare it, didn't realize that half the month would be a break till I had already done it.

Mister Cakers

I hope Zacks okay after trying to control so much mana

Yvng Dante

Aster got hard countered, she is strong but very dependent on her team to really show her prowess. Allie and Zach are pretty much zone specialists so cutting off Aster was significantly easier for them than it otherwise would have been. If she had a bit more defense to hunker down and wait until Matt and Liz can provide support or a very good way to escape when forced into an encounter similar to something like the switching matt and Liz can do it would prevent stuff like this from being possible, It feels like she underperformed here but she was fighting a losing battle ability wise from the start.

Yvng Dante

Yep, Matt likely would have significantly better mana control than the vast majority of the empire If he was rocking a regular mana pool, he is controlling more mana than most tier '40s have as a tier 25 who has had no practice. He has so much quantity that the fact he can even control it at all at his tier is a testament to his skill and effort.

Alex

"Did they coordinate their defensive abilities for aesthetic purposes?" TEAM SPARKLES. What a great new ascender name for them that would be xD totally fear inducing.

Alex

Same

Jonathan Campbell

Honestly I'm not sure how feasible it would be for her 'selves' to be on opposite sides of a rift portal, and I feel like that would just compound exponentially as time dilation increases.

Alex

Sure it can :) just gotta be more creative.

Chimera80

It’s generally accepted that out of combat Matt sits on about 10%. He reaches 10% after about ten minutes, but it’s days and weeks to go much higher. And he does have ongoing maintenance costs - AI usage, talisman creation, wtc

Chimera80

Yup. That’s specifically the main reason for upgrading [Regeneration] - overhealth. He has the Skill, he’s getting the orb… he’s gonna be pretty much unkillable.

Chimera80

12 Tiers. He’s currently regenerating 4096 times faster than a Tier 50…

Chimera80

They do… but he’s got so much regen at this point that he can afford that now. He was explicitly shown using [Mana Strength] (a reserve Skill) a few chapter ago. Back when he couldn’t afford to power *literally everything at once* and still have spare capacity, reserve Skills were contraindicated. This is no longer the case.

DiAlpha

Light popping like a a too small resistor is just amazing. I don't Hope that he is severely damaged but I think that everything we have seen before would point to that specifically being Concept damage the efficient king meets unlimited resource

Kconraw

Great fight. Thx for the chapter
