Hello good and honest patrons.

This is my final, large version of my big huge Over the Garden Wall drawing which I've titled, "Vignettes" and which you can see starting TODAY at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra! In honor of this viewing (and because I remembered,) I am going to be taking you through my process and showing some closeups.

I started the process by watching the show and deciding which scene I would draw for each vignette. How I decided to do vignettes?? I don't know. Maybe this was around the time I made my badtober prompts so the comic page prompt was on my mind? Who can say. But I thought instead of finding one thing to draw that encapsulates the entire show or is my favorite part, I could just draw every episode since there's only 10 episodes.

The sketches I drew ended up being the same all the way to the final so that was nice. One exception was ep 5, I was originally going to draw the couple in front of their estates, but I didn't want to draw architecture hahah. I then drew the final lineart digitally, because its much easier to change things and format there. This was the lineart:

I really like this digital version I think I could make a cool B&W version of this drawing... perhaps I will.

At this point, when I do a big fancy drawing for a show I must test my materials and do thumbnails because I do NOT want to make any mistakes. This step was super important for me to see how the colors were gonna behave with each other, I mostly decide to do a pink layer over the sketches as their base, few were blue (I'll explain this a bit more later.)

Here's the tests:

OK, next step was doing THE REAL THING!! I had to transfer my drawing to the traditional world, and I chose to use illustration board! I already had one leftover from my Last of Us drawing for nucleus, and it was perfect, I tested posca on it and its super smooth and lovely (and won't buckle with all the layers and paint.)

I transferred the drawing to the board with graphite (?) transfer paper as seen below:

Once you apply pressure to the graphite paper, it transfers the marked areas to the paper underneath, so I put my printed guide on top and used a red pen to transfer my lineart. I used red so I could tell where I've already transferred easier.

This is how it turned out:

THEN, I cover all of this sketch with a layer of posca, as a previously mentioned, mostly pink. I have the big huge chisel tip poscas which both cover a lot of area and allow whatever's underneath to still show through. If I just went over this with my final colors, the sketch layer would show too much and I'd have to do a bunch of layers to hide it better, especially for the more fluorescent colors. It also acts as an underpainting.

After that, I start filling in with the colors. Its very important to think in layers when you do this!! That's another reason why it was so helpful to do thumbnails.

This sorta required level 100 brain. You can see where I did multiple layers of posca and where I did less. I discovered my green posca is quite opaque, so for the areas I was going to make green, I wanted to ensure that the sketch would still be visible after I went over them with the green (as I DO need to still see the sketch as a guide!)

As you can see, the sketch is only ever so slightly visible under the green I used two colors for lineart! I used iroshizuku inks in blue and red with some dip pens, one for detail and one small chisel. I was going to use black but didn't want to OVERPOWER anything. Also! I used glittery poscas!! I don't know why, perhaps just because its beautiful. I made efforts to not focus all the glitter in one area, but rather balance it throughout the entire drawing.

This is after the red lineart. Sorry for the picture quality, something about me is I'm incapable of capturing imagery.

This stage is nearing completion, most of the tinier vignettes are almost done, just need their background colors. I save this for last so I can clean up all the edges...

Here it is "done" essentially! I just needed to paint the background of the entire thing with white acrylic paint. This angle shows you all the sparkley areas...

AND THATS IT!!! I love how it turned out beautiful beautiful. This is a scanned version where I had to enhance the red lineart areas, but I hope some of you can go see it in the real world :-) please send me a picture if you do!!
