Bang girl in Rain - Process and Final (Patreon)

What up gang. Here is my latest drawing of a light-brown haired girl with bangs listening to music nervously in the rain and drawn digitally by me, flesh.png on instagram.
I had trouble with this SON OF A GUN drawing ugh!!! Specifically the hands. I don't even really change the face beyond its first iteration. The hair I sorta just like threw in the towel but it worked out well.
The conception of this drawing was simply the desire to draw a big head in profile. As you saw in my artistic inquiry post, my initial sketch had another hand on her shoulder, and she was twirling her hair around. This is cool. At the end of the day what made me stray from this was the desire to put headphones in her ears. I liked that. However, the headphones and the rain and the other hand was TOO MUCH and did not make any sense.
This semi-elimination of a problem (having to draw another hand) created a new problem (have to draw shoulder and more hair.) But I decided this was a lesser evil. The hands issue. This is a semi realistic rendering. Not lineart but not like a real person. So I had to at least add some kind of lighting to the hands and some dimensionality. I had a reference for the hands, but the lighting was bottom lit and super cool in color. In one of my days of drawing I simply pulled my pants up and go to work. I had the genius idea to simply observe my own hand in nature and see how the light affects it. The top of the fingers will be in light and everything else simply wont be. Add colors from the face. Yadda yadda. Also, the face shading is quite messy and unblended, so I made sure to make the shapes of the coloring quite geometric and blocky and not overly rendered. Which is easier said than done!
For the hair, it is quite hard (i discovered) to separate layers of hair. Its essentially one pretty consistent layer of color, the hair behind her hands is dark and undetailed as to not draw attention to it and to be good contrast to the lighter colored hands. On top of this base of hair color, is lots of scratchy hatchy lines that both "outline" locks of hair and add a darker shade (see around her eyes where bangs curl down and behind ears.) There's also a strange grayer color that is sort of supposed to be the shadow her hair casts on her face. It's not super accurate but I liked it. All in all, it is quite rough and low contrast but I think it is good for highlighting her away from the background and not drawing too much attention to the hair itself. ALSO something I did that I don't do often is draw a bunch of little hairs around her silhouette. This is what happens in real life and I really like it.
Lastly, the rain is very cartoony and scratchy. I wanted to show the difference between drops that are falling in the foreground and ones in the background. The ones in front are more full and sharp and the ones in the back are slightly smaller and much less refined. I did forget to erase part of one drop near her back it bothers me.
That is all. Please let me know if you ever inquire anything about my process. ta ta. Feel free to save for wallpapering purposes.
