Worst Ever: The OUYA Failure

Comments

Who were the people throwing money at the Ouya Kickstarter? Cost conscious gamers? No, these were people who had $100 to blow. They probably already had the desirable gaming consoles. Why would those people want to buy Android games for the TV on inferior hardware? Most of the probably lost interest immediately. Just remember, pretty much all the games on here were not "ports" in the standard sense. They were just Android games. I haven't looked it up, but the developers of these games almost certainly would have to do nothing but send out a lite and full version of the game that they were already building (as was the style before it became more like DLC). This is why Oddworld runs like no one had bothered to test it on the system...they hadn't. And since it's like a 1 hour task for a company to have Bobby the Builder send off the APKs, you wouldn't have had to make very much to do try this. That it reached a point where they needed to asking for a demo version says a lot for how bad things were, then. And clearly they didn't have any standard for getting onto the store. At least the Massive Cleavage vs Zombies people bothered to test the game on the console since they knew to tell you to get another controller.

The hype surrounding this thing was absurd. I remember hearing claims that the entire Ouya library was going to be free full-stop, that the system would be ungradeable so that it would become The Last Console You Ever Need, and so on. Nonsense like that is how you get an outfit like Forbes to claim that it's going to be competition for the PS4.

It's sad that you were so fair with this console, but the OUYA still came out as such a train wreck.
