Ep: 6 for some reason the strangest place but also the best possible moment to open up

You guys are almost to the end!!!! Nice picture choice -- Lucas taking care of Max.

E6: Hopper instinctively tries to protect Elle but we’re way past that – she needs to protect him now. They’re all in over their heads – especially with the knowledge that the Upside Down is actually a WORMHOLE dimension from one point (our world) to a different place in the universe. The wormhole inclusion this season isn’t surprising in that it’s a huge plot point in “A Wrinkle in Time” -- Mrs. Whatsit specifically shows Meg how it works in a way that’s now been mirrored in multiple other films. I get why Ken doesn’t like the “black hole” idea (it’s not actually a black hole, that vacuum is the vacuum of outer space and/or nothingness surrounding the “wormhole/conduit” that is the actual Upside Down), and why the “wormhole/conduit” version of the Upside Down seems far less elegant to you both, as I felt that way too on first watch – but it’s a central idea to what Vecna is actually doing, to be revealed in the last two episodes. Surprisingly, although it felt to me like an idea the Duffer Brothers had conceived later in the writing, apparently this was ALWAYS their concept of the Upside Down even from Season 1! The science teacher and the librarian are hooking up? That tracks! Ha, that bastard is still limping from what Will did to him! I just love that Will thrashed Vecna so hard last episode, suck on that! Robin’s really pulling her weight this season. Her brain might be firing on so many different cylinders at once, but she’s the quickest at putting things together. (With visual aids too, yes!) Jamie Campbell Bower is really knocking his performance as Vecna out of the park. I’m not really into Amazon’s “Rings of Power” (I watched S1 on a lark, it felt like fan fiction at times), but I have to admit him being recently cast as Celeborn for the upcoming S3 has me intrigued. Anyway, you’re now probably wondering where Vecna has physically stashed the kids, since that dusty (and kinda organic!) cave looks unfamiliar to us right now…. I like seeing how much Max has grown since we first saw her – while she’s still “her”, she actually engages Holly rather than just impulsively shoving her (and her ideas) away. I remember a time when she would push everyone away reflexively. Aw you guys are so suspicious of Kali! What has Kali ever done, lol? So innocent! But yeah, you can see this new complication coming up – how WILL they deal with the never-ending threat of the military trying to use them to create more monsters like Henry? Great moment when Dustin finally stops being angry at Steve and just tells him how badly he fears losing him (after losing Eddie) and Steve realizes how hard this has been for Dustin and accepts it. So happy this happened (although they had to go through shit to get there). The conversation between Jonathan and Nancy when they are preparing to die is one of my favorite moments in the entire season – some of this season has felt over-scripted and/or plot-driven, but this moment was TOTALLY unexpected, totally organic, and totally… real. I felt like I was watching two characters suddenly rebel against the script and just come to life right in front of my eyes, culminating in maybe the most romantic, “Let’s NOT get married,” proposal I’ve ever seen. [To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say you’ll know everyone’s relationship status by the end of the series.] Mrs. Wheeler, lol – she can’t keep lying around, she has a job to do!! Reflections of Jurassic Park and the velociraptors there in the laundry room… Honestly, I’m not sure if those tanks would have exploded like that, but still, there's Mrs. Wheeler coming in clutch again. Great last scene with Holly (Nell Fisher) and Max (Sadie Sink). This is why Sink has received numerous nominations (including one for a Tony award) and why they recast Fisher into Holly’s role. They’re just both well-accomplished for their ages and sold this moment so hard. LOL your description of your dog sounds like my cat Pyrrha, she does that too and lets me rub her belly for minutes at a time (which is not common with cats, they usually get prickly) – sometimes she is so NOT a proper lady.

E7: “I’m here” is a callback to what Max says the first time she escapes from Vecna (back in S4E4). I love the synergy between Lucas and her upon her return -- they are so good together. Sooo… where exactly IS Holly again? (Turns out she’s in “The Abyss”.) And watch that first step, it’s a doozy! Poor Will, for him it’s always been two steps forward, one step back. After such a remarkable triumph fighting the Demogorgons and even Vecna, that lich squirms his way into his mind again and demoralizes him with his deepest fears. In fact, Vecna is just terrible that way: Later this episode, we see him turn the natural goodness and camaraderie of the children against Holly with his lies. He twists positive aspirations and taints truth for his own ends -- Will’s situation is just a more complex version. Yay, Vecna saved Holly the Heroic from a horrible splat! What a good guy -- VECNA FOR THE WIN!!! Linda Hamilton – STILL a badass. I can’t believe they didn’t make more screentime for Mrs. Wheeler!! (Poor woman, she needs to rest.) Mike’s consolations were great, however. He knows how to appeal to his mom. Dipshit Derek, Nooooo! We need you, buddy! Help Holly!!! All those smiling kids surrounding Holly when she wakes up -- it’s a creepy sugar-frosting version “Village of the Damned.” Holly reevaluated and tried to play along, it’s unfortunate she broke her cover too soon with that head smash – just too many kids to escape. I can’t believe that one boy called her a bitch, that was surreal. Maybe Holly lost her dream version of her figurine, but I think she is made of more than painted pewter – she will rise to this challenge. Kali… Sigh. I mean, from a realistic POV, she’s not wrong about how things will likely play out even if they win this day, and this situation needs to be entered with open eyes rather than platitudes. She’s also literally seen all of her own friends die, so again her viewpoint to her IS the honest truth and she’s playing the “long game.” But it also smacks of despair on some level, which is why it doesn’t sit well with anyone. I don’t know. It’s really going to come down to Elle and what she chooses; we just know no matter what she does, it will done out of love. Yeah, the “wormhole” thing made the characters do a double-take, and we also were forced to do that as well – but I agree it’s a payoff in this episode when you realize Vecna’s master plan is to merge The Abyss into our world via the wormhole. It now makes sense what is happening… and how awful that might be. Okay, elephant in the room: Will officially comes out to his friends and family. I cried again watching it, and I was moved to see both of you feeling similarly. Did Will not know some of them already knew and still loved him? But he really needed to hear it from everyone. All I’ll say personally is that I understand it, and it was such a bold and brave move… and also necessary. So you guys might have missed the hubbub, but the viewer base really REALLY pissed me off regarding this episode because it was the WORST-rated episode of Stranger Things in its ENTIRE series run (it’s a 5.6 on IMDB, while the next lowest in Season 5 is the 7.4 finale.) Yes, a LOT of people review-bombed this episode over Will’s coming out speech – 68K people gave the episode a 10, while 61K people gave it an actual 1! If anything justifies Will’s fears in coming out, it’s the goddam reaction from supposed fans who review-bombed this episode, and pretty much the 10’s and 1’s were all either for or against this one scene with Will. The naysayers accused this episode of being heavy-handed with Will’s gay confession and jamming it down viewer throats, all while the world was on the verge of being destroyed and so how dare they use episode time so close to the finale [less than 5 minutes, I just rechecked] for this purpose. Some of this outrage was also based on the fact that some viewers did not like the plot turns this season and were expecting something more spectacular (action-wise) vs character development moments this close to the end of the series, so to them it was “wasting time” better spent elsewhere. Again, all that negativity was bullshit. From a character perspective, Will is a heavy hitter along with Elle and even from just a plot point NEEDED to do this to reclaim his confidence and power so that he could give 110% in the final battle. He had to have a clear conscience and know that his friends understood and accepted all of him. The season has explicitly set this situation up as such. But in a show that has dug into characterization at times, well, we get Elle and Hopper wrestling over what a father/daughter relationship, we get Jonathan and Nancy wrestling over what their romantic relationship looks like, and this is a formative issue for Will and so it is simply also being dealt with. Yet it was simply dismissed because of it being about sexual attraction, which has habitually been a point of contention in our culture, and the response to this episode just highlighted how awful a situation queer people often find themselves in even 40 years past the time period of this story. (At the time it came out, I actually saw people on FB saying they had watched the entire series to that point but now were not going to watch the finale because of Will's coming out scene.) Good grief. ...and so we are finally here: The Series Finale and the end of the story.

The reveal of what the upside down was pretty big. The moment Dustin mentioned exotic matter, I knew immediately what the upside down was. In theoretical physics, exotic matter is opposite of regular matter in the sense that has negative mass. Meaning instead of exerting a gravitational pull, it pushes mass away from it. It's needed to keep a wormhole open because gravity wants to close it and turn it into a black hole, so they got lucky that Nancy didn't destroy it. The exotic matter is there to keep it from collapsing so that a pathway between two points in space and/or time can remain. Otherwise, you will get a singularity.
