The sound design of this film is a Star Trek legacy of all the shows/films but especially The Next Generation

You need to watch Galaxy Quest!!!! Its a Star Trek comedy!

Since you asked about how these films relate to all the other Star Trek tv shows, etc...these three films exist inside what is referred to as the Kelvin timeline. Essentially, this is the new timeline that branched off from the prime timeline when Nero traveled back in time. All the other Star Trek shows and films are based (mostly) in the prime timeline, so these films exist basically outside that canon.

You really should watch Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and Voyage Home. Wrath of Khan REALLY should be seen before you go to Star Trek Into Darkness

None of this happened in the shows. That's the point. The other TV Shows and movies are the Main Timeline, and Spock and Nero going back in time created this new Timeline, where Kirk grows up without his Father.

There are 10 movies and 6 tv series that preceded this film. The first TV series had these characters and the first 7 movies.

Having knowledge of the previous tv series and movies really just adds another level to this reboot. Even though you haven’t seen them, even you could pick up on the chemistry these actors brought to this new incarnation of the most classic of characters. And the score is just as much one of the characters of the movie as the human counterparts. I went to see a full orchestra play this soundtrack in a concert hall and the tingles it sent from my toes right up to the top of my head… my husband and I just mouthed “Holy f*ck” at each other. Amazing.

I remember I took my mom to see it in IMAX when I was an undergrad. It was such an experience!
