Pre-Constructed League! Play with us on discord! (Patreon)
Content
With all the stuff happening in Magic and with both new players and vets that are here in Patreon and our discord. We wanted to have a fun way to play some games together monthly. Larry & I have been excited about this for sometime. Everyone has access to a pre-con that you could buy at your LGS, or Anazon or you could use Moxfield to recreate a precon list. As I show you how to use that to play over spell table here:
IHYD HOW TO PLAY MAGIC MTG COMMANDER ONLINE!
The quick overview: we pick precon decks that aren’t on our internal ban list that we will create to keep it fair since not all precons are fair. First round no upgrades. Then each month we slowly upgrade with both budget restrictions and card amount restrictions. This is supposed to maximize our fun. This is all about fun more than winning. Especially if you are an older player to hekpnour new players get excitement and not feel overpowered by crazy decks that we can build. This should be a fun way we can help each other with suggestions on how to slowly modify the decks. Let’s have fun. Yes Larry, Ayli, myself and over IHYD guests will be participating in this league. We have people all over the United States, Europe and Australia. It doesn’t matter where you live we are going to find a pod for you.
Following message is written by Larry with excitement to help us continue this conversation together and have a fun season of a league play games. To bring the community together playing Magic together and slowly over time upgrading our precons together to have fun with players at all skill levels.
Let’s have fun all the best,
Lynch
From Larry:
“What's up everybody! Thanks for taking interest and furthering the conversation around this commander league endeavor.
I'll be discussing various aspects of rules and logistics to get this thing off the ground. My hope is to have an acceptable framework that we can adjust with group input. With that said I would like to propose the following schedules and rule sets for all players interested.
***1. Logistics and pre-league to do's.***
We will play 10 total matches. Matches will take place every 2 weeks. Schedule modifications for holidays of course. I figure we can start as soon as 2 weeks from now.
I'm looking to match up pods of 4 based on time zone and availability. After that it's up to individual pods to figure out their time preference for games. (I'd feel silly telling everyone they gotta play on Fridays at 8pm)
After 10 matches we can set up a playoff round provided we have enough pods that fired off.
1 member of each pod will be responsible for confirming each match's results with the pod and communicating those results to league moderator.
In addition, each player submits the following information:
- time zone
- top 2 days of the week for you in terms of availability.
- vote for bans in ranked order. Pick 5 precons and rank them 1-5 (5 being highest). The top 5 precons from among all our votes will be banned for this season.
- write 1 proposed achievement rule. Something like "be the first player to deal combat damage" or "cast your commander 4 times in a game". This can be an easy-ish or more difficult achievement. Prior to each game 2-3 achievement rules will be selected at random. (This allows players to gain additional points in a given match while making it difficult to farm points from match to match.)
***2. Budget and Deck changes***
After the initial cost of your unmodified precon, you'll spend a maximum of 5$ per match in cards for a roughly 100$ investment in paper. Free if you decide to use moxfield.
After each match you are alloted 5$ to make up to 5 changes to your deck.
Card value will be pegged to TCG mid prices. Unspent money can be rolled over into a bank for your next match.
Changes need to be submitted 3 days prior to matches being played. Moxfield would be great for tracking and inputting these changes / linking into Guildpact or a shared document.
You can change your commander as one of your five changes, budget restriction applies as normal.
Changing your commander counts toward 1 of your 5 changes per match. So if there is an alternate commander in your precon you may use that starting from match 2. Changing commanders to a card already in your deck does not count toward your 5$ budget.
You can swap basic to basic for free. This does not count toward your fives changes per match.
***3. Games and Scoring***
- to start you need an unmodified precon. This can be in paper or using moxfield if you prefer.
- match points:
Winner- 4 points, 2nd place 3 points, 3rd place 2 points, 4th place 1 point.
In the event of killing multiple players at once (same combat step/game action/trigger), match points are award in turn order proceeding from the active player.
- after list updates have been submitted, 2-3 achievement rules will be randomly selected for the next match only.
-after the match, all players go over and confirm the scoring. Then one player chosen ahead of time communicates scores to league moderator.
-negative points: I'm inclined to say no, but am 100% open to ideas.
-I figure part of how this plays out is if one player is starting to run away with it by week 3, the other players will be strategically correct to kill the player in the lead first. I think that's okay, I'd encourage everyone to lean into the idea of respectful competition and the conversations it will take to get there. That said, disputes can still happen, we're all ears for suggestions about how best adjudicate those situations.
- at the end of 10 matches the points leader of each pod wins the season. Hopefully playoffs thereafter
- no scooping permitted. You can, however kill yourself with your own spells or effects
****4. Individually banned cards****
Na.
(Just the existing banned list)
***5. Prizes***
This page intentionally left blank.
Jokes aside, the chief winnings at stake will be bragging rights. Stuff like challenge coins, trophies could definitely be in play. Up to us.
Thanks for making the time to read through. Questions and ideas are encouraged, let's make this sweet idea into an awesome reality - together.
Cheers - Larry.
