I think of the modern movies the power of us was really good. This movie actually made me cry!!!! Of the older ones I really like the Lucario&Mew movie it was a really good movie when I was like 8 I haven’t watched it in years tho. It also gave us cunty regirock with a handbag so it’s extra especial!!!!

I am not a Genwunner by any stretch of the imagination, but my favorite of the Pokemon movies I've seen is still the first movie. Mewtwo just makes for a very interesting antagonist.

2000 easy. It was a playground event that many recesses were spent discussing, and reinacting. One of few, truly uniting moments in schoolyard shared fandom. A link cable for culture of the era.

Destiny Deoxys because the city it takes place in feels like absolute peak classic Pokemon world human and tech synchrony

I really dig the Manaphy movie. The set pieces are really pretty!

Destiny Deoxys really sticks out to me all these years later. Deoxys being such a unique pokemon that matches the futuristic city it takes place in with a slight horror angle when Ash and friends have to hide and avoid it's clones.

pokemon heroes, mainly cause of how absolutely pretty it is! I was a big fan of latios and latias, . The setting of Alto Mare being based off of italy lends itself to a lot of super pretty background shots. Its pretty standard pokemon movie fare but i think the sheer beauty of the movie makes up for it!

Pokemon Ranger with Manaphy is also my favorite. I'm a sucker for storylines about forgotten kingdoms. It's why castle in the sky is my favorite movie.

For me, it has to be The Rise of Darkrai. It is beautifully animated, as most Pokémon movies tend to be when compared to the regular anime, and it has an incredibly touching story revolving around Darkrai, a Pokémon who simply wishes to protect the peace, but was burdened with a malicious power that caused it to be seen as a villain. It also kicked off the trilogy of Sinnoh-era movies, the only time when Pokémon movies have been concurrent with one another, which I think only adds to the storytelling that it presents, since unlike other Pokémon movies which are mostly non-canon, aside from the first one, the events of this movie do have an impact further down the line. However, my personal favourite aspect is the inclusion of the song "Oración", as both the diegetic magical MacGuffin that saves the day and the non-diegetic theme of the movie's climax. Composed by Shinji Miyazaki, who later went on to compose for the Generation VII anime (also filled with lovely compositions), it is an ode to the peace that Darkrai sought to protect, befitting the name "Oración", which is Spanish for "prayer". Oración is probably the most iconic aspect of this movie, as it would be reused many times throughout the anime's run, as well as serve as the basis for the ending theme for 2017's I Choose You!, and as being incorporated during the Cresselia VS. Darkrai event in Pokémon Sleep, audible once players had collectively gained enough sleep power to overcome Darkrai's nightmare and allow for it to rest on the islands with the other Pokémon.

All the movies have some really great characters. I can't choose between these two but I'd have to say The Power of Us and Destiny Deoxys are my favorites. Both of them have a really good city setting with very different executions. All the characters are fun and unique and the soundtracks to both are amazing with beautiful animation as well. I'd put I Choose You with them but I don't like that the dub didn't use the original score.

As someone who has been heavily invested in the anime for a really long time I have mixed opinions on the movies after so long. For the longest time I would say either 2000, Movie 3 Legends of the Unown and Heroes were always competing for my favorite spot. Lugia became my favorite Pokémon because of Movie 2000 and the plot of the true hero that saves the world really worked for Ash as our main character, but then you have the emotional impact of Movie 3 with the Molly just trying to get her family back just hit you. As for Heroes it’s just a beautiful movie with a wonderful locale the emotional weight of Latios’ sacrifice to protect those he cares about and the ambiguous ending with Bianca and Latías is always fun to revisit. I do want to give a huge props to the Power of Us which to me is a better showing of Lugia than its prior showings but I haven’t really watched it as much as the older ones for it to dethrone anything yet, maybe in the future.

I love all the Pokémon movies so it was difficult for me to pinpoint my favorite but it’s ultimately Movie 7: Destiny Deoxys (or in JPN Sky Splitting Visitor: Deoxys). I have way too much to say so I’ll try to keep it concise but I love the dynamic characters, the brilliant use of settings, the layered unfolding of an awesome multifaceted story, and its exploration of themes that are central to Pokémon. I think this movie integrates the strengths of the previous 6 and transforms them into a great story that can only be told with Pokémon. The context is established extremely well through a documentary-esque narration with a montage of Pokémon habitats that ends on a question about outer space. Rayquaza, which appears to be inspired by East Asian serpentine dragons, guards the ozone layer and feels threatened by this Pokémon from space so they have one of the most legendary and brutal battles in the series that makes great use of the environment and sets up Tori’s trauma along with his father Professor Lund’s research. Deoxys’ relationship to Rayquaza and its ability to emit auroras to communicate is symbolic. The Earth’s ozone layer protects the surface of the planet from harmful solar radiation and it seems Rayquza embodies that. Auroras, like the ones Deoxys use to communicate, are kind of like a dance of atmospheric particles settling after being excited by charged particles from solar winds. Real auroras happen in the thermosphere which is farther out from the stratosphere but they can sometimes temporarily deplete ozone at high altitudes, though it thankfully heals quickly. The transition to LaRousse City 4 years later effortlessly introduces the rest of the cast in an awesome idealistic high-tech Pokémon city full of Pokémon cameos and characteristic moments for each of the characters. May’s passport photo is still cracking me up 20 years later. The city feels lived-in and the movie makes you feel like you’re a visitor. The Battle Tower is exciting, the double battle has fantastic choreography, and the soundtrack is fantastic. The artstyle, colors, and animation are beautiful. The cinematography in this film is on another level aided by visual storytelling that communicates the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of a wide cast of well-written characters effectively. You feel the impact of every hit and the emotions between every interaction. You can really empathize with Tori’s trauma and it’s fascinating to watch Ash go from relentless optimism to a more sensitive place where he can help Tori slowly confront his fears and overcome his struggles. This Side of Paradise is one of my favorite songs the ENG dub ever made and it’s a sophisticated reference to the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name. The movie lacks a conventional antagonist and the antagonist changes as the story unfolds. At first we have a neutral struggle between two wild Pokémon, then we have Rafe and Sid who are rival competitors to Ash, then when Deoxys shows up we enter a movie monster phase. Deoxys is the main antagonist structurally but its role becomes more complex as we learn about what it’s actually doing and why, then that’s compounded by Rayquaza’s arrival and the actions it takes. Then as a result of all that in a masterstroke of setting integration, the city’s utopian hightech infrastructure goes haywire causing the city to temporarily turn into a dystopia. Everyone has to work together and everyone’s strengths are well utilized. On a more personal level I need to add that I also love the design/behavior of Deoxys plus the evacuation leaving our main cast having to be stealthy in an empty city and the Toho monster movie vibes and the creepy thriller moments and the drama oh and all the Pokémon in it and the awesome action!! I adore the sound of Deoxys’ “RAAA” that sounds like massive old metal doors creaking and the sound of bells for the auroras and Rayquaza’s ferocious roars that are exactly what you’d imagine that type of dragon would sound like. Blastoise and Blaziken make a rad duo, Plusle and Minun are adorable, and Munchlax is hilarious. Sirskit and Masqueraine are lovely additions and Metagross steals the show when it’s on screen. Our usual heroes have some of their best moments and the friends they make are all worthy of being mainstays. The ending is so satisfying and it’s just all around a very enjoyable and meaningful experience to me every time I watch it.
