Issue 4: Trails & Leads

The battle was in the skies this time. Meteor Woman was active, but thankfully the Meteor had given her a more flowing silver costume to disguise her pregnancy. It was sort of like a maternity dress, her normal silver leotard instead covering her legs and flowing loosely over her body, though it still pulled tight against her bust and, of course, showed her cleavage through a cut open ‘window.’ But while it was, in many ways, like a traditional maternity dress, her cape was more like a long blue coat that gave an extra bagginess to her appearance. No doubt the tabloids would go nuts over her new style and speculate on it, but as far as she was concerned, she still looked good, and more importantly it made her bump harder to discern. In many ways, she was just borrowing a trick from celebrity women who were hiding their early pregnancies: a less tight dress and a coat to obscure the bump.

“Can’t believe you still don’t close that thing,” she muttered to herself.

‘It is part of your aesthetic now,’ the Meteor Entity spoke into her mind. ‘It wouldn’t be there if you didn’t accept and embrace it as part of you.’

At this, Meteor Woman smirked to herself. “Well, I guess you did give me a pair of spectacular tits. Would be a shame not to keep showing them off. Thanks for covering up the belly, though.”

‘Alexis spoke to me earlier and recommended it. I do not understand what ‘public relations’ is, but she seemed to consider it a mighty foe.”

Kara smirked as she lowered a hand to stroke her belly, where that little new life fluttered within. “Trust me, it is one big enemy if you get on the wrong side of it. I wouldn’t even be up here if things didn’t seem urgent.”

But they were. A kaiju threat off of the coast of Tokyo combined with a hurricane evacuation down in Florida had diverted many heroes away from Star City, leaving only a skeleton crew. And as if waiting for the perfect, and very convenient, opportunity, a previously unheard of gang calling themselves ‘The Sky Thralls’ had suddenly burst onto the scene in Metropole. Cell towers were destroyed, facilities damaged, and her own damn prenatal clinic had had its power cut, along with a hospital wing that nearly lost its generator power as well. There had been chaos in the streets, but once enough forces arrived to put an end to their chaos, they had taken to the skies. Two members were surfing on rocket boards, their bodies encased in high-tech armour that blocked Meteor Woman’s X-ray vision, while another had some kind of mutation that left him looking like a fallen angel with far too many wings on one side, each covered in eyes. His angelic scythe sent forth beams of light that melted through almost everything. The last member of the Sky Thralls was a knight in shining armour riding a serpent that looked like a Chinese dragon. Even Kara hadn’t seen something that weird in a while.

But they hurt my people. They hurt my neighbourhood. They damaged Yusuf’s shop again. They’re not getting away.

But she couldn’t take them on directly, no matter how much the knight upon the serpent darted at her, flying at speeds that nearly matched her own and striking out with strange glyphs that erupted in the air like flak gun fire all around her. She focused her power into her laser vision and scorched the side of the creature, which howled and began to spiral out of control. The knight sent up dozens of exploding glyphs which blocked her pursuit and covered their brief retreat. The angel was the main focus; Ice Shard and Lightning Lass were tackling it, as well as Blue Trident and Tacticon, one of their own mech members.

Damn it, I can contribute more if I weren’t fucking pregnant!

But even moving as she was, she knew she wasn’t on top of her game. They’d taken the fight far into the air, even up just beneath the clouds, but the helicopter below was filming everything, and she was constantly conscious of how much of her belly she might be displaying, if the paparazzi in the second helicopter noticed that her already massive bust was just that little bit bigger. Hell, they’d probably comment on her change in fashion and speculate wildly anyway!

“Ugh, who knew being a mother would be such a full-time job!?” she muttered under her breath, and then launched into action as the two mech-surfers soared by her, firing lasers in her direction.

Kara dove up into the clouds and shifted about. Her X-ray vision allowed her to zero in on their boards. She missed the first laser shot, but the second cut the engine in half, forcing the mecha-man upon the board to leap off and rely on his much slower jetpack.

“That’ll do it, time to - WOAH!”

She should have seen it coming. She knew she should have. But sleep hadn’t been great lately because of all her damn hormonal changes and the pregnancy tiredness, and so she was caught off guard by the massive energy beam from the dark angel’s scythe. She would have been hit - perhaps even hurt - except that she was pushed gently but emphatically to the side by someone who was very dear to her heart; her very own sister.

“Meteor Lass!” she cried. “What are you doing here? I thought you were with the wards today.”

The pair spun around. Meteor Woman used her laser vision and Alexis launched forward to catch the mech-man who’d just dodged it, annihilating his board and flinging him across the battlefield.

“What am I doing here!?” she erupted. “What are you doing here? Don’t think that costume change will fool anyone up close! You need to get out of this fight now.”

“I’m still good for it! I’ve been keeping to the sidelines and using my laser vision.”

They dodged another beam from the fallen angel’s scythe. Something far below in the city erupted, and Lightning Lass dove down to see if anyone was hurt.

“Don’t be stupid!” Meteor Lass yelled, punching at the dragon and causing it to retreat again. “Ugh, I can’t believe I’m the one being responsible for my much older sister right now! What’s next, you’re going back to being a burglar?”

“I would never - watch out!”

They dodged another beam, then soared up separately in a flanking manoeuvre to punch the lights out of the dragon, sending its teeth flying and the creature beaming through a portal to get away from them.

“Nice,” Meteor Woman said. “And as I was saying, I would never do that!”

“Well, you could have fooled me, sis! You’re endangering your baby! What would Ralph say? What would little Dinah think? Aren’t you meant to be with her?”

It was like a dagger through Kara’s heart. Her shoulders sagged, and she immediately felt like an idiot.

A big, stupid, oafish idiot. The kind of ugly idiot you used to be when you had a penis swinging between your legs, Kara. Only now you don’t have the excuse of your blood flowing from your brain down to your dick as an excuse!

“You’re right,” she said. “Jesus, sis. I’m such a fucking idiot.” She shot loose a laser to batter at the angel again, but it was a half-hearted gesture. The enemy was already flying away at rapid speed, trying to shed Ice Shard’s pursuit. With a burst of white light, the enemy teleported out, and Tacticon rocket cages captured the two mecha-men.

“I’ll get these two to the Hero Dome for processing,” he said before flying off.

Meteor Woman remained floating in the spot next to her sister as Ice Shard flew closer. “What was all that about?” she asked, Blue Trident approaching as well, born aloft on a liquid bird conjured by his power. “Kara, you stuck to the sidelines for that entire battle. We could have taken down that angel bastard if you weren’t out here. What is going on?”

“Don’t be harsh on her,” Trident said. “We all have our off days, Shard.”

But Ice Shard was smart, Kara knew, and damn prickly. She lived up to her moniker: pale white her, her white and blue snowsuit showing off her lovely body but also her theme: that of being cold as ice.

Shit. She’s good. And she’s got good reason to be pissed. I showed up to this fight which meant she didn’t call in everyone else. Because I’m the heavy hitter.

Meteor Lass coughed beside her. “My sis has something she’d like to say,” she said.

Kara bit her lip. Since when was I taking orders from my supergeek of a sis? Sign of the times, Kara. Sign of the times.

“Okay, I was on the sidelines because . . .”

She pulled her loose costume tighter, leaving her swollen belly unmistakable. Trident’s eyes went wide. “Congratulations!” he said, moving forward to embrace her.

“I - woah, I did not expect this,” Ice Shard said. I’d say congratulations . . . except are you fucking stupid!?”

“I know-”

“No, you don’t know! You’re putting your child in danger. What kind of fucking mother are you?”

Meteor Lass flew in front of Meteor Woman, holding up her hands for calm. “Woah now, just calm down, Ice Shard.”

“Calm down? We just had a pregnant woman fight mysterious new supervillains in the sky? What kind of fucking outcome do you think this have if it leaks? Hell, even if it doesn’t, this is a joke.”

Lightning Lass emerged back up, flying beside her frigid counterpart. “Ice Shard, I’m happy to report no casualties and just minor injuries! I helped out this really cute barista and she helped me find some people who were trapped and - oh my God! Meteor Woman, you’re pregnant!”

Kara blushed, holding her belly. “Yeah, I guess I am.”

“You’re - you’re pregnant! No wonder you’ve not been at the Dome lately! And you were fighting! What? Why? When!? Who!? How!?”

“You’ve short-circuited her,” Meteor Lass said with a smirk.

But Ice Shard cut any humour short by expanding her field of cold around herself, drawing attention. “Meteor Woman, this was stupid and you know it. Get back to the ground, get back to your already-existing child, and know that you are officially on leave from hero duties, as of four months ago. That will be official. And don’t go to Flame Dancer on this one. I don’t doubt she knew about this, but I doubt she knew you were still superheroing. You are on leave. Got it?”

Kara was never one to let someone else get the last word in, though. The only problem was, she couldn’t think of a thing to say. So instead, she gave a nod of apology to her little sister, then flew down and away, trying to hide her pregnant belly. Not that she’d be able to do that soon.

Over the next month, Kara threw herself into her role as a mother and her role as a security company manager. Conway Security was booming, particularly in the Metropole area, but something about that made her deeply sad, and not even her assistant Mark remembering exactly the way she liked her coffee could cheer her up. Hell, not even him still sneaking the occasional glance at her fabulous cleavage made her feel a sense of smug pride anymore. Right now, everything was like a ticking time bomb. This strange conspiracy in Metropole, the dangerous attacks there, her own uncertain position within the Hero Society, and most of all the baby that was now five months along and kicking inside of her womb.

“It’s not your fault, ya little fella,” she said, caressing her stomach. “It’s just bad timing, that’s all.” She rose to leave work and go pick up her daughter from daycare. Mark was there, staying late as always until she was finished. The man was loyal to an absolute fault, and she threw him a smile as she walked out, one hand on her stomach.

“Mark, get out of here already! You aren’t even earning OT right now.”

“I know, I know,” he said. “I was just making sure we’ve got enough stock ordered for the next month. There’s been a lot more burglaries and the like lately, our Metropole customers are going wild for our stuff.”

Kara sighed. “Yeah, that’s what I’m afraid of.”

“Mrs Conway?”

“Nothing, Mark,” she said. “Just wish our services weren’t needed sometime.”

“It’s funny,” he said, “but I did a little bit of research and found out that four separate companies buying up a ton of our gear actually belong to the same conglomerate: Blackwell Enterprises, you heard of it?”

Kara frowned. “I think I saw their CEO on the TV a while ago. Seemed like an asshole.”

Mark chuckled. “Always blunt, boss. Yeah, Harrison Blackwell. He’s a real go-getter in the corporate world. Got his fingers in all the pies, you know? I’ve got his autobiography on my shelf at home. You should give it a look; real inspiration. But . . . I gotta warn you. If his companies are buying up our stock, then that might mean he’s interested in some kind of buyout. You know, checking out our equipment, replicating it, diverting from our standard markets. It’s his modus operandi.”

Damn it. Just another fucking thing to think about. An asshole CEO who steps on the little guy trying to make moves on my company. Can’t be Meteor Woman, can’t be Conway Security. What even am I these days? I better still be Kara, because there’s no way I’m goin’ back to being Burt, I tell ya.

“Thanks for that information, Mark,” she said diplomatically. “Keep an eye out on this Harrison Blackwell person for me. I might have to arrange a meeting with him.”

***

There was something so very familiar about the white-haired woman in her thirties who was entering the prenatal clinic just as Kara Conway was leaving it. She waddled out, clutching her pregnant belly. She was officially five months along as of three days ago, and she was getting more and more frustrated with goddamn everything. In the sky, a number of heroes were responding to some emergency over in South Metropole. The news station in the clinic had made it clear: another supervillain attack, another new gang.

Where the hell are all these gangs coming from? I swear we only manage to catch one or two members each time and they don’t say jack shit once they’re caught. All lawyered up and ready to go. Co-ordinated.

She sighed. She couldn’t do anything now. She was over halfway through her pregnancy, and had little Dinah in her arms, resting on her impervious belly as they left the clinic.

“Mommy,” her girl said, before touching her belly. “Baby. Baby in Mommy.”

“That’s right, kiddo. Another little one for the fam, eh? You hungry?”

Dinah nodded eagerly. “Then let’s get to the food court. I’m meeting a friend.”

They arrived a few minutes later, and Marli had already saved them a seat. She was looking enormous by this point, her stomach positively gravid with her twins. And yet despite some extra fat in her cheeks, a result of her bodily changes, the woman looked absolutely radiant in a way that Kara didn’t always feel. Beside her was an Asian woman with a slender figure and slightly crooked teeth. She smiled politely and waved for them to join.

“Well, hello little Dinah!” Marli exclaimed. “How are you?”

“More babies!” Dinah exclaimed. “Mommy, look! Even more babies!”

Kara chuckled. “That’s right, honey. Even more babies. Lots of moms around. Hey Marli, hey Leticia. How are you both doin’?”

“Hungry as hell,” Marli said. “And pregnant as fuuu - firetruck. Pregnant as a firetruck. Sorry, gotta learn to cut down on the swearing.”

Dinah just giggled as she took her seat next to Leticia. Kara went to move her back, but Marli’s partner just put up a hand. “It’s okay! She can stay here if she wants.”

Dinah was more than overjoyed about this, despite having only met Leticia twice before.

“Okay, so what are we having?” Marli asked. “Because I am craving Chinese right now.”

“That’s nice,” Leticia said with a giggle. “I’m flattered.”

“Oh, that’s funny. Very funny, honey. What about you, Kara?”

The superwoman smirked, rubbing her stomach where her little one was doing flips and kicks. “Hmmm, baby wants . . . meat. Lots and lots of meat. Maybe that combination rice from the Korean place. Mhmmm . . . yeah, that.”

They laughed, getting ready to order their meals. Dinah had her little Kids Club meal with extra fries. The growing girl loved fries. Kara, on the other hand, devoured her food and went for seconds, which got a chuckle since Marli was doing the same for her dish. The whole scene brought Kara a lot more peace than she’d had in days, however.

It’s actually . . . nice to hang out with another preggo and just shoot the shit. Maybe I can enjoy being on leave if I can just let go of all this shit.

Things got even better when Ralph finally arrived. He kissed his wife on the cheek and scooched next to her, taking a moment to feel her stomach as he always did so lovingly. “Sorry I’m late! Following up on some investigations,” he said, bouncing an excited Dinah on his lap after she’d run around the table to greet her Daddy. He looked at Kara. “And I think I’ve got something significant we can talk about later.”

“Hey, no work talk at the table!” Marli exclaimed with a grin on her face. “It’s all baby excitement, food, and babymoon planning here, got it?”

Ralph put up his hands. “I surrender!” he said. “Besides, I’ve been trying to get Kara off of her work brain and enjoying this lovely pregnancy. Doesn’t she look glowing?”

“Extremely,” Leticia said. “And, if I may say so, I’m a little jealous.”

“You want to get pregnant?” Kara said.

“No way,” she said. “That’s for Marli, not me! But . . .”

She gestured her chest, then extended said gesture as if she were pretending to cup a much, much larger pair of breasts than her slim chest possessed. Marli snorted, and Kara blushed a little.

“They, um, got bigger than I expected.”

“Thank God someone finally said it!” Marli exclaimed. “Girl, you stacked as hell! I bet you can’t keep Ralphy here off of you, right?”

Ralph just laughed at this. “She tries! But you know what they say about the second trimester and those excitable hormones . . .”

Kara gave him a playful punch on the shoulder, but she giggled. In truth, she was pretty proud of her big rack these days. She was just a little daunted with how much milk she was likely going to make. With Dinah it had been a lot. Not that Ralph had minded ‘helping’ her out.

“Where are my excitable hormones?” Marli said. “I’m missing out, damn it! These twins just got me tired all the time.”

Kara gave a sympathetic smile. “Maybe-”

But she didn’t finish the sentence. Her super hearing suddenly lit up. She could hear distant panic, a moment of shock, something crashing into a building at high speed and -

“GET DOWN!” she yelled. “EVERYONE GET DOWN!”

Ralph was already grabbing their child, and Kara, despite her pregnancy, leapt with her super strength over the table and in front of Marli and Leticia. A momentous KRA-KOOOM bellowed beyond the food court, and suddenly glass shattered everywhere. It was like a concussive wave, millions of shards heading straight for entire families. Kara reacted with just a split-second to spare, screaming at the same time and releasing her sonic power. It crashed against a majority of the glass, sending it flying back into the road, but she couldn’t get it all. Shards pinged off of Kara’s skin, tearing small holes in sections of her red maternity dress, but she was impervious to such damage. A massive explosion had gone off in the distance, right where she’d just walked with Dinah just forty minutes ago. Already alarms were blaring, and numerous people in the food court were screaming, some of them injured, though not as many as could have been, thanks to timeliness.

There was no thought. She turned to Ralph; he had glass shards in his arm and was grunting in pain, but little Dinah was safe, though she was squealing. She applied her X-ray vision immediately upon her family and friends, and then around the room. Ralph’s injuries were not serious, and Dinah was physically unharmed. But several other bystanders were more seriously hurt and would need quick bandaging.

“Ralph!” she screamed. “Get Dinah to safety! Get everyone out the safe entrance, now!”

He nodded, knowing exactly what to do. Leticia led Marli by the arm, and Kara quickly helped them up. She then strode across the room, mindful of the panicked fluttering of her own baby in her womb. She added a little super kick to her speed, and again to her strength so she could rip up some shirts and fabric from the parasols that had been knocked inside. At the same time, she gripped her watch and pressed the hidden button on it, speaking directly to the Hero Dome.

“Allison Food Court, Metropole, Meteor Woman speaking. There’s an explosion and many injured. Get here fucking NOW!”

She took care of the three most serious injuries and was about to attend to more when she used her X-ray vision to see the sight of the explosion. Various villains she didn’t recognise were fighting a couple of blocks away, but the site of their terrorist attack made her gasp.

It was near the clinic. Right near the Metropole Prenatal Ward.

Those fuckers. Those absolute fuckers. They attack my home, my family, my friends, and now THIS!? They aren’t getting away with it.

She launched out of the Food Court, not caring who saw her, and then connected to the power within her.

‘Be careful, Kara,’ the Meteor spoke in her mind.

“Don’t worry,” she said, teeth gritted. “They don’t stand a fucking chance. I’m saving that goddamn clinic and everyone in it.”

She flew, her Meteor Woman costume now the classic silver leotard again, her gloves and boots their usual blue, her cape of the same colour streaming behind her. Her pregnant belly stretched the material quite obviously, but she didn’t care who knew she was knocked up right now. There were people to save. Kids to save.

“Those fuckers,” she said again, tears forming in her eyes as she arrived at the clinic in a split-second, her very arrival causing a gust of wind that knocked one of the villains back. “YOU COME TO MY NEIGHBOURHOOD!?” she screamed. “YOU COME TO HURT MY PEOPLE!?”

A villain with a bomb theme went to throw a device at her, but she zapped it in mid-air, then lasered his foot right off. He screamed as he fell to the ground, but Kara was already moving. A large golem-like creature was tearing apart a section of the prenatal clinic, which looked heavily damaged by the blast. Kara shot forward and pounded at him with her fists, then delivered a kick that literally shattered an entire arm segment. Another blow sent him down the road, bursting a pipe and leaving him stuck in a crater. That goddamn dragon turned up again, but she had no time for it. She rose into the air and moved so quickly that everything was in slow motion. She punched the knight off of its back and sent him flying practically to the horizon, uncaring where he landed. She was all reflex, all anger, all rage and hate right now. These people had nearly hurt her Dinah. Her Ralph. Her friends.

They weren’t getting away with it.

She gripped the dragon’s neck and pulled it down, her strength greater. She’d never cut loose like this before. Everything was a flurry of movement, the world slowed to a crawl around her as she broke one of the dragon’s arms and then lasered off one of its claws. She sonic screamed right in its face, causing an eye to pop in a visceral manner, then grabbed hold of the neck again. The dragon changed, shrunk somehow, but she kept her grip, screaming in rage, tears flowing down her face as she prepared to snap it and kill the being. Something was yelling. Someone else was yelling. She could hardly make it all out.

And then she was frozen. At least, her lower half was. Kara was so shocked that she dropped the dragon, only he wasn’t a dragon anymore; he was just a regular man with fear in his eyes and a missing arm, not to mention a bloodied eye.

“P-p-please don’t k-kill me!” he cried.

Kara gasped. Oh God, I nearly murdered . . .

“Stand down, Meteor Woman!” came a voice. “It’s over.”

Kara looked behind her. A white-haired woman with a severe face and a slight dome in her belly was standing there, ice magic curling around her finger tips, which were outstretched towards her. It was then that Kara realised that she did recognise this woman.

Holy shit, it’s Ice Shard out of costume. This is what she looks like. And . . . she’s pregnant? That fucking hypocrite!

The clinic had frozen walls and ice pillars keeping it up. Kara realised that Ice Shard had been in there, and had acted just as quickly as she had.

“Everyone’s safe,” Ice Shard said. “Only minor injuries. Now stand down before you kill someone.”

Kara stepped back. Her heart was beating like a jackhammer. What the hell did I just do!?

“Ice Shard,” she said. “I didn’t . . . I didn’t mean . . .

The other hero walked closer, dropping her hands down and placing one on her own belly. With her X-ray vision, Kara could tell that she was, perhaps, just three months along, finally coming out of hiding in the belly department. But she could barely take all of this in.

“I didn’t mean to,” she repeated, tears filling her eyes and pouring down her cheeks.

And then the unexpected happened. Ice Shard stepped forward and put an arm around Kara, giving her a hug.

“Shhh, it’s okay,” she said. “I’ll take it from here.”

And for once, Meteor Woman was glad of it. She nodded. Ambulances and police cars were arriving, fire trucks too. She couldn’t deal with the PR right now. She couldn’t deal with any of it. It was all becoming too much. With a nod from Ice Shard, she took to the sky and began to search for wherever Ralph had taken Dinah to safety. Her fears were assuaged when she found them, and she emerged from a nearby alley as her other self, dress still torn, top buttons undone, and she embraced the pair. Dinah was just now calming down, but Ralph looked as shaken as she was.

“They’re gone,” she said. “I, uh, fucked them up.”

Ralph cradled her cheek. “Good,” he said. “I don’t want to say it, but good.”

Kara calmed a little. Dinah jumped into her arms wordlessly, and she cradled her child, weeping a little more with her. “It’s okay, baby, it’s okay.” The super woman looked at Ralph. “Honey, there’s going to be some bad news for me soon, so tell me you have something good.”

Suddenly her husband was in reporter mode, and perhaps that helped him a little after such a terrifying experience. “I think I’ve got something big, Kara. That Harrison Blackwell is connected to this. His people have been meeting with the mayor and the city planning committee. But . . . I’ll need your help and your equipment to bug his office.”

Kara narrowed her eyes. “I’ll do a lot more than that, Ralph. They attacked our community and I just fucking lost it. I can’t do that again. For all of us. But . . . I think it’s time our community fought back.”

To Be Continued . . .
