Marie stood in front of the watch, hesitating. So Dominique’s story was true? He timidly reached out with his trembling hand toward the watch.

-Are you afraid?

-A little…

-Of what?

-I’m afraid of turning into a woman, since that’s what happened to you.

-It seems you didn’t quite get what I said.

-No, the watch devoured my manhood.

-No, it took my lie as payment.

-The fact that you hid your trans identity?

-Yes, so unless you’re like me, you have nothing to fear.

-What if I didn’t know? Have you thought about that?

-It’s not something you can ignore, believe me. You can repress it, but ignoring it is impossible.

-How can you be so sure?

-I’ve done a lot of research and noticed it often follows the same pattern. A more or less intense repression, only to eventually come to terms with it sooner or later.

-I’ve never had a thought like that, at least not that I can remember.

-Then you’re not at risk.

-And how far back do you want me to go?

-Hmm, I’d say an hour.

-An hour ago, we were still in the bar—aren’t we at risk of running into ourselves?

-You’re right, let’s avoid time paradoxes.

-So what do we do?

-Here’s what I suggest: let’s spend an evening together, and then, when night falls, we’ll use the watch together to go back a day in time.

-Worst case, I’ll spend a lovely evening with a pretty woman.

-Hehe, flattering.

-I’m serious.

-I don’t doubt it for a second. Make yourself comfortable; I’ll go get something to drink.

-Thanks.

Marie settled into the sofa before Dominique returned with two beers. The two friends began talking about their past, laughing at their silly antics and their somewhat far-fetched old dreams, before settling in to watch movies. During the evening, Dominique would occasionally snuggle up to Marie, which made the young man a little uncomfortable at first, though he eventually got used to it, thanks to the alcohol. However, neither of them dared to take things beyond a night out with friends. The last movie ended around two in the morning, and Marie got up to go home before collapsing heavily back onto the couch.

-I don’t think you can go home in this state.

-Where do you want me to sleep? Your couch is too small.

-Sleep in my bed with me.

-You can’t be serious. I’m a man and you’re a woman.

-In your condition, I doubt you’d even try anything.

-I… Yeah… I’m not even sure I’d be able to…

-Don’t finish that sentence.

-Sorry.

-Come on, I’ll help you.

So Dominique helped Marie get up and took her to her room. She laid her down on the bed, helping her take off her shoes.

-There you go. If you stay dressed, there’s even less chance of a slip-up.

-Yeah, good night.

-Wait, we still have to do the watch test.

-Oh right, go ahead, bring your timepiece.

Dominique brought the watch and explained what to do, so Marie followed her instructions before falling asleep. When he woke up, he was in for a shock: he found himself in his room, more specifically, in his childhood bedroom at his parents’ house. He checked the date on his phone and was shocked. He had indeed traveled back in time. He was also certain it wasn’t a dream because of his contact with Marie. So he ate breakfast and waited, somewhat impatiently, for his meeting with Dominique. When the time came, he hurried to the park to meet his friend and was in for a surprise.

-Dominique... Your chest!

-Yeah, I know. I guess my transformation wasn’t quite finished.

-I can see that.

-So, do you believe me now?

-Yeah, totally, and ahhhhh!

-What now?

-I forgot to check if I’d changed.

-Hehe, I don’t think so.

-Phew, but do you realize the power you have with this watch?

-What do you mean?

-You can win the lottery for sure, be unbeatable at betting basically, you have complete control over your earnings and resources.

-I see. I’ve never thought about that, I’ll admit. But there’s a problem.

-What is it?

-The watch is gone.

-Are you kidding?

-Not at all. I don’t know if it’s a sign that my transformation is completely finished or if it’s because we both used it.

-That’s too bad. Where do you think it is?

-I don’t know. Maybe it went back to the antique dealer, or maybe it fell into someone else’s hands.

-So what do you want to do now?

-I was thinking about… this.

Dominique moved closer and suddenly kissed his friend. He was certainly surprised, but returned the kiss a moment later.

-Are you sure about this? I know it’s a huge change.

-Well, you know, I haven’t told you everything about myself either.

-Oh yeah?

-Yeah, I found out a few years ago that I’m bisexual.

-And what does that have to do with me?

-Well… I’d started to wonder if I actually had feelings for you.

-Hihi, in the end, it looks like we’ve both gained something.

-Yeah, in the end, your watch was surely a sign of fate.

-Or our city.

-That’s true, and now, what do you want to do?

-Go for a little walk?

-I’d love to, let’s just let the wind carry us.

-Hehe, yeah.

So the two lovers set off for a walk, wondering what the future held for them, but one thing was certain. They would face it together, the two soulmates having found each other.

THE END
