Fall Cosplay on the Evandra x Nixie Ship (Patreon)

As someone who has been an active participant in many fandoms before, I was expecting that some of our characters would be paired off, I think what I wasn't expecting was how quick and how definitive the Evandra and Nixie ship would be within our small fandom. I honestly love it, I think the art is adorable and the fact that people are seeing our characters, who admittedly at this point have only just started working together as a team, having the potential for a loving relationship is beautiful.

There is definitely an audience for relationships that have a serious/goofball dynamic, I know I personally grew up consuming media that had this dynamic in all kinds of relationships; romantic, platonic or familial. Shows like the Simpsons, Pinky and the Brain, The Road to Eldorado, so many animes... It was also the foundation for the whole comedic duo from vaudeville theatre that has evolved into the buddy movies. So I completely understand why this dynamic would be attractive to shippers who see Evandra and Nixie together.

What I think is more interesting however is also how underneath the shallow descriptors of "The Serious one" and the "The Goofball'' is how similar these characters are. They've both had their tragic pasts that have accumulated into destructive behaviours designed to keep others at a distance. They've both felt rejection from their family, those who are ‘supposed’ to love you the most. They're both powerful and their weaknesses and strengths play well together. They're both complicated characters that see rules and laws as suggestions and NPC lives as disposable obstacles (which, admittedly, is somewhat appropriate seeing as they are in a fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons in which these character's players won't face real world consequences for their actions). Of course this is all my own conjecture as an actor of one of these characters and as a fan of this show as well.

As for whether I ship Evandra and Nixie myself? I decided early in the production of the show with the permission of the creators that I would portray Nixie as ace/aro, she doesn't feel sexual or romantic attraction. That doesn't mean she can't form deep and intense relationships or feel love for others but rather it wouldn't be of a romantic or sexual nature. Does Nixie care for Evandra? I think she's learning, She's learning to open up and trust and love. I would never tell people that ship Nixie and Evandra that it would never happen because who's to say that they couldn't end up in a Queer Platonic Relationship? I have no idea what lies in store for these characters and where their journey will take them, I think it's why I love the episodic structure of this show so much, nothing is impossible.

It makes me happy to know that people are enjoying our characters, if it means that they want to ship some of them together then I support them. A version of our characters will exist in everyone's mind and honestly I have no say over that, I just want people to enjoy the show, however that may be.
