Luckymancer is busy with life things at the moment but I had the inspiration to write an autobiographical comic. I didn't really think I'd ever make anything directly autobiographical, but given that I've kept trying and failing to instill it into some fiction scripts, I figured it'd just work out better if I was as upfront and direct about all of this as I can be. Maybe then it'll get purged from my system and I'll just write things normally like a normal person.

I'm making this in an very simplified style, so when I do update this I'm gonna try and make it multiple pages.

Mattis. Probably.

As an anti-theist I feel so incredibly sorry for you right now. As far as I'm concerned this kind of upbringing is nothing but child abuse and part of the reason why I want to be first in line with a hammer when the time comes to tear down the fairytale temples.

Sunny Haven

Oh gosh, the *dread* I felt when you brought up other Third Great Awakening churches... (I wasn't aware that was the term for them.) oh boy. this is going to be really rough, huh... I feel like if things had taken a slightly different turn in my childhood, my family easily would've gotten sucked in by one of these churches and turned into... this. So this resonates with me in a way. Hoping to see more soon

Lucaflowe

Man, this is so relatable, having grown up in a heavily religious and strict family as well (Baptist) but coming out Agnostic. That line of "Between you and God" sticks out so much from having heard that same damn thing over and over, and if you didn't do it, they would get mad at you. And having had parents break things by hitting you with them.....Still hold a grudge over that...

Othello

Don’t think I realized you were working with Luckymancer, cool. I’ve hung out with them and Nixuelle’s crew at a couple of FEs now.

Chrysalis

The way you've touched on religion in some of your other stories has seemed like there's some personal experience there, but I don't assume anything's autobiographical unless explicitly stated. I was raised Apathetically Catholic, but I've heard enough from friends to have some idea of how bad some churches can get. Never heard much about this specific one before (like many people, I assumed it was genuinely as non-denominational as it claims to be). Here's hoping this helps you work some of the toxins out of your system.

J. N. Squire

I didn't know about this sect at all, yet their teachings feel very awful considering I grew up in an evangelical family that went to more relaxed churches about how to interpret the Bible. 😰 It doesn't seem to be very present internationally, or at least in France?

rickgriffin

It is nearly non-existent outside of the US besides small pockets here and there. Not to be confused with the Church of Christ International which is a completely different and unaffiliated church that is all over latin america.

CsmicYote

One of my grandfathers was also a Church of Christ preacher (he was definitely on the chill end of the spectrum though). Also went to Evangelical school from pre-k to high school graduation which was way more a mixed bag. Think I got lucky that my parents and school were often just too busy / lazy to go super hard on most things. Course growing up with untreated ocd didn't mix well with the religion so I guess they didn't really need to be strict for me to beat myself up lol. Just want to say I sympathize 🫂

rickgriffin

I mean, my grandfather on my mom's side was also chill. Thing about Church of Christ--especially the non-institutional branch--that's made it hard to talk about in terms of religious trauma is that they don't technically *do* anything. Almost everything that's overtly sucked about it is doctrine.

Ra'Zim

Oh man.... Yeah... I was raised with this religious sect as well... None of my family were preachers directly, but they definitely fell for the doctrines. I see similar themes with my childhood already.

Shiny Umbreon

Man this is hitting so close to home that's it more like a brick through my window

Meigo

Oh wow this hits waaaay too close to home...

Magitechnician

Still sounds valid as religious trauma.

Blackspots

Sooo... this sounds exactly like fundamental independent Baptist churches and families (which my family was). Also, my dad used my mom's stencils to put the Bible verse out of Ephesians on their breadboard they used to spank us, which says "Foolishness is bound in the heart of the child, but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him" Considering this, my parents did exactly as the pastor preached, including the fact that the pastor that married my parents in 1972 proclaimed that Christians were immune from mental health diseases, and psychiatry was evil. (and my mom was mentally ill, much of it not really showing up until her later years and when dad was getting old and didn't have the energy to keep her under control)

Blackspots

Basically, North American Christianity is completely different than the rest of the world. Much of the far right in the US doesn't follow Jesus' teachings at all.

Startide

Oh wow. Yeah I always thought that the Church of Christ was just another flavor of regular church because I see them around a bunch. Do those preachers yell a lot during sermons too? My family dragged me to a southern baptist church a lot when I was little and those preachers loved yelling fire and brimstone crap

J. N. Squire

Alright, thanks for the explanations! 👍

Cirian

I'm glad you're getting this off your chest and out of your system. I can't imagine what it was like to grow up in a house that strict.

Vet

I feel you. I got dragged to a Presbyterian church. Sunday school day one. Humiliation galore because I did not know ALL the books of the Bible. I was 9! My Bible was taken (my grandmother gave it to me) as it was not the correct version. That was the first Sunday. During the week my dog I knew since I was a baby died. I was really sad. The preacher questioned me about my Sunday school issues (I was just too dumb the teacher told him). I started thinking about my dog and started crying. He asked me why. I told him including the fact that I believed that all of God creations go to Heaven. He laughed in my face then got angry at how I could believe such crap. He then berated my dad and mum as unworthy parents in front of me. I suddenly stood up and told him to go to hell and I promptly left his office. He made a move towards me which triggered my dad to shove him into the wall. There was lots of shouting and such as I left. I have not stepped into a church since except for my wedding. A private affair between me, her, and God. Later I sat with my grandma as a kid after that incident. She was half Native American. She explained how it is and how it will be. I took comfort in her words as she held me. I then understood how it all works. That was 65 years ago.

Ry Roo

Wow, learning this is what happened to you growing up makes me wanna give lil Rick and current day Rick the biggest hug. I hope it’s cathartic to let this out.

Darkest Sword

My condolences. Call me an atheist.

Arvetis

Or the United Church of Christ, which is a pretty chill mainline church.

TwilightShadow

I can say one thing for sure, your work has absolutely helped me process my own religious upbringing

Adranos

The three great lies, The Bible, Physiology, and Statistics.

Brocade

Fuck, I'm so sorry that happened to you. It's interesting being able to go back and say "this traumatic event gave me this bad coping mechanism that I'm still working through"

rickgriffin

In most practical senses, the CoC operates basically like those independent baptist churches, yeah

Quilly

Oof, I can relate so much to a religious upbringing where I wanted to be studious and learn everything right to fit in. It sucks how much of a negative impression something like that can make on a young mind. I'll be watching for these!

loddite

this is really cool

CorgiButtOnWheels

Oh how... this really struck so close to home. While I was raised in a totally different denomination, yet I related to SO much of this. Especially the "Your parents know best" leading to overthinking any critical thought let I be judged harshly or condemned... I was a good little Christian kid. From the time I was a toddler to my early 20's. Twice on Sundays, once on Wednesdays, tons and tons of extra curricular activities like bible studies, church camps, revivals, classes, singings, etc. Started noticing things were... off, in my late teens and early twenties. I was not rebellious, genuinely RARELY ever spoke out of turn. Especially when my mom would chastise me for a differing opinion by calling me disrespectful... I was made to feel like I was when all I really had done was had stated my feelings on a matter. My family had gone to at least 5 different churches since I was like... 2 all the way until I was about 21? One of those 5 we actually returned to. so 6 changes all together for as long as I was going. One of which, the second to last; we helped found. When our pastor sought council and overhead form a holiness church? We started going to their "Camp" 4 times a year. More than any I'd been to at any other church. Never in my LIFE have I felt the ick as strong as I did there.. it was a CULT. I'd always been comfortable in our churches, but that camp? Something was deeply wrong. Mind you, I was ALWAYS a good, obedient little boy to my mom. When I tried telling her that me and my best friend who was living with us were... uncomfortable. that we didn't want to go to these camps- hell we weren't even in the youth group. we were over 18. We only helped. We were not only basically forced to attend, but when I respectfully tried to discuss the reasons we did not want to go? I was cut down, told I was not only being disrespectful, but that I was a heathen and that if it were up to me I'd stop going to church all together... which was NOT at all what I was asking for. I sobbed in the back of our family fan with how badly she lit into me... Looked over at my cousin who was also raised with a good head on her shoulders and just asked "Did I say anything disrespectful or out of line?" All she could do was bite her tongue and shake her head. I'd NEVER once complained about going to church (save for not being a morning person, so Sunday mornings sucked but I always just accepted it as a thing I had to do.) Otherwise? I mostly enjoyed going. Being homeschooled it was one or two times in the week I got to get out and see a few people my age. For her to make me feel as horrible as she did like I'd committed such an offense, claiming that something I was doing must be the issue? That's what finally started to break me of "Mom knows best always." After that church, we went to one more. I went with my family for maybe a year.. met my ex-wife and stopped going not long after that. Mom blames her, but really? It was that day in the van and one other incident that relates to that holiness church group that caused me to never want to go back. Now when she talks about it, funnily enough? She talks about how bad that group and camp was, but totally acts like what happened in the van that day and every other hurtful thing she'd say regarding my own comfort going to those meetings and events was not near as bad as I say it is. Or just ignores it completely... I love my mom. she's not perfect, but she's not a bad person either... But I will *never* go back to a church with her on the regular again...

Gabriel Vadney

Wow this hit home! Growing up c of c in a small Texas town this is %100 accurate. I remember going to college to be a missionary because that is what my dad wanted. Becoming an atheist later was rough but worth it

Arid

Damn, my grandmother escaped the church of christ when her husband died. They are some tough customers!

SpokenSoftly

As a Unitarian Universalist, I hope you can work through whatever trauma you've experienced and learn to distinguish between toxic and non-toxic forms of spirituality.

Mattis. Probably.

I try to say this as respectfully as possible... But who do you think you are to assume that I must have experienced some kind of trauma to realize that religion is nonsense?

Felisalpha

I don't think you've failed to distill some–a good deal even–of that trauma into your fiction nor tangentially through your kinkier art. It's obvious the fiction was too opaque to be cathartic in *your* assessment, which is the only assessment that matters in this case. Regardless, this is a truly brave project. Risking inner turmoil for a measure of inner peace doesn't always work as planned...but you've built one hell of a community of misfits that's got your back every step of the way. <3

Tygepc

Yup. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Here's hoping sharing your story wakes a few people up to the utter abuse and horrifying life they're subjecting innocent children too. . . *sigh.* We can only hope. Looking forward to future pages.

Lord Chaos

Pretty much the same here.

Edolon

I hope writing it out helps Also offers all the hugs, I hope you are doing as best you can and have good friends and acquaintances that you can talk to

Ian

Ah yes the good old Christian spankings firbever percieved slight such as breathing too loudly, quietly, or moderately, mumbling, speaking clearly, having opinions, not having opinions, cleaning up, not cleaning up, or daring to question the Big Book of Contradictions (alternately titled Apocryphal Tales from the Middle East or alternately alternately titled the Bible).

FarmWolf

Thank you for sharing; hope it helped you at least some.

Valerio

What I admire in you Is, despite this abusive upbringing, you managed to build a religious lore in your comic that Is of great heart and inspiration even to an agnostic such as I. You already won, because that evil hurt you but didn't overcome.
