Stoker

Oh. Oh no.

David Lee

Ah yup yep. I wonder if the American foster care system was ever *not* part of the greater right wing christian nationalist diaspora ideological project

Amazing Mr. X

There's something especially heinous about telling a kid to get used to drowning. Sorry you went through that, Rick.

Arty

Oh my god. Rick if you made this into a book or if this becomes a physical comic I would buy it. Fantastic pacing. Im hooked every week

Startide

Gotta love all the completely broken logic fundamentalist parents seem to be capable of

Simon Tesla

Huh. Don't think I ever explicitly logicked my way into furry like that but it might explain some preferences. Also, ominous.

Char89_Charizard

Foster Care? Oh boy. I bet they're gonna try and convert a foster kid who's an atheist.

This is extremely compelling, super bleak stuff here.

That first page got me a chuckle. The last one… 😰

I've recently started seeking a therapist for childhood trauma and a lot of this resonates.

Rick, you and I had the same childhood. That's friggin wild. Evangelical parents (southern baptist, huzzah), home school at the end of middle school, back into public school, and parents decided to become foster parents at the start of high school. Stop reading my mind. It's dirty in there.

Spending 13 years living next to a church I learnt thing. Most old Christians seem to be smiling knoves. And never practice the fundamental of Jesus’ teachings aka don’t be a dick. God may be a megalomaniac and one of the most evil characters humans have created. But Jesus was a chill dude. “Love thy neighbour.” “Cast the first stone” and “the Good Samaritan” are damn good lessons to live by.

You didn’t lock this behind your paid Patrons. Thank you. I think I’ll sub now, LOL.

2026-10-06 00:00 I also had similar thoughts and guilt with things involving nudity and sex when I was growing up in an Evangelical household. This complicated my feelings around that as well as my sexuality, and then I fell into the furry fandom. After looking at certain images, including those of men, I thought that I wasn't nothing more than a dirty sinner and I was on a path to Hell. I believed at the time that not only was God watching everything I did, but everything that I thought was a sin, because according to what I was taught, to lust was to sin. Eventually, I met people, read webcomics, and it all brought me around more, but I felt guilty because I lusted after guys. And when I finally could no longer deny my sexuality, it was also around the time that I began questioning my religion, if it really was true or not. It was after during a Sunday sermon, when my pastor went on a homophobic rant about a Christian singer who was featured on the news or something. He said that he wanted to throw his remote at the TV after hearing about how her friends and family accepted her. My mom noticed how uncomfortable I was feeling, and asked if I wanted to leave, which I did, and I never forgave that man. It was at that moment that I knew there was no God, because what kind of God would allow his own followers to spew such hate and discord among his own creations? Everything I was taught up until that point had all been a lie, just as a means to control others. Since then, despite how I may crack a sex joke here and there, my drag queen personal comes across as a sexual being, but no matter how many kink events or parties I've been to, I find myself being rather shy and scared when it comes to matters of intimacy. It's not that I don't want it, it's just that I worry about... well, my fear of being inadequate.

Heh, I got into furry stuff in part through a similar line of thinking. After being caught watching porn I got a talk about how often pornography is bad because the women in it are not actually enjoying themselves and are being exploited. I then figured cartoon porn, particularly furry porn where everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, is fine as no one is being hurt. So furry porn is moral and 'real' porn is not.

Thanks for sharing this story. I’ve been reading your comics for well over a decade now and is interesting to see the story of the creator. I just recently became a father and your story is helping me see that the way my kids brain works will probably be very different than my own, as I get the feeling your brain approaches issues very differently than your parents. Thank you for helping me see this. Also, I too grew up in a family where we brought in and cared for kids in the foster system, with varying degrees of success. One I truly consider my brother and we fully adopted him. My sister was also adopted, but she untimely became estranged to the family. The rest of the kids were temporary housing situations. We gave them a place for a while and cared for them like they were part of the family, but ultimately they went back to the system and I have not spoken with them since.
