Ooooof, this hits so hard. As a teen I struggled with questions like that, to the point I dreaded having to attend church for fear I'd be pressured into another reason to doubt while also feeling pressured to evangelize to everybody.

Simon Tesla

I feel like a big part of the reason I got so good at compartmentalizing my life is so that I could have both church and friendships outside it. Sure, there was mounting guilt in the church compartment, but it meant that evangelizing was usually the furthest thought from my mind in friendship mode. :P

This kinda contextualizes the various Jesus thumpers I’ve run across; I always thought they were morons and/or jerks, but some of them might genuinely have been fear baited into doing that

I'm so glad I am a Buddhist.

Oof, the arguments were probably falling apart because they're from an extremist cult. Also that lack of garanteed salvation and guilt-triping discourse despite most people attending that church being baptized is very messed up from a biblical pov 😰

When I was a young furry, I distinctly remember also being massive into dragons (Thanks Eragon books) and it still affects me today. When I was first exploring the spicy, sexy roleplays, I couldn't get enough of the "being a dragon online" part. What a time to grow up.

We're all going the hell in a bucket. At least enjoy the ride.😋

Religion hates it when you question how illogical it is. It all boils down to 'trust me bro' levels of blind obedience

This is pretty hard to read and understand for somebody who's not religious at all because it doesn't make any sense. It sounds like some extremely occult stuff...

Every time I read one of these, I just want to give you a hug. :(

As an ace person it's fun looking back at how they twisted themselves in knots trying to tell me it was bad that I didn't have those sinful urges. All the kids I knew growing up played along with their parents' religion of choice and couldn't get enough of shit talking it when the adults weren't around. It laid a solid foundation for my atheism.

My grandad stopped believing in the church the day a priest said with a straight face it was 'gods plan' at the funeral of a 5 year old. I never really did believe, and the older I get the more I feel that if god exists he is a monster that responsible for more death and suffering than all the despots of history combines combined with multiple instances of direct infanticide and child murder. Jesus seemed to be pretty chill tho, idk why CHRISTians can;t follow the teachings of the guy they lit take their name from Ie Love thy neighbour Let he who is without sin cast the first stone and how a Samaritan can be a better neighbour than a Priest

This comic brought me to a weird tangent. In an episode of WILTY, David Mitchell had the truth revealed "As a child I was scared of the sun." As a child he was told if you look at the sun you go blind. So he was afraid even just seeing the sun from the corner of his eye for a moment would be the onset of blindness. His explanation was that advice for children is calibrated to protect the most reckless of children, leaving the timorous children in terror. And in your case, the teachings are optimized for the average child/adult. You were trying your hardest to be faithful, but also very analytical. This caught you in a trap, because the teachings were meant for people who don't really put a lot of thought into it or don't take the faith bit as serious.

Hedronal

I'm not sure I understand what hedging means in this context. I know it as "hedging a bet" (essentially betting on both sides), but it seems to mean something like "going so far that we only do what's definitely allowed, functionally making a moral line". What's it mean?
