The TL on this is a little confusing, but these appear to be the facts: the original SA lawsuit (alleging rape of a 13-year-old during a 2000 VMAs afterparty) against Diddy was filed by Tony Buzbee on behalf of 'Jane Doe' in October 2024. Buzbee then reached out to Jay-Z for mediation to negotiate a monetary payout for his anonymous client, which Jay-Z declined. Jay-Z’s lawyer then filed an extortion lawsuit against Buzbee on Jay’s behalf (with Jay as a 'John Doe'), stating that Buzbee threatened to falsely accuse Jay of rape of both men and women to ruin his reputation if Jay refused to pay. Buzbee countersued by pulling his original Oct. 2024 lawsuit and refiling it, naming Jay-Z publicly. Since this has come out, Buzbee has also accused Jay-Z of harassing his family, and another woman has come forward saying Buzbee tried to coerce her into falsely naming celebs on her unrelated SA lawsuit for more money. Upon learning of this, Jay-Z's lawyers have requested that the identity of 'Jane Doe' be revealed, and the case dismissed. The NFL has also announced that they will be continuing their contract with Jay-Z until the legal matters are settled, so presumably Beyonce will be doing her Christmas show, and Roc Nation will continue to plan large-scale NFL events like the upcoming Super Bowl.

This topic made me think of two clips I’ve seen on YouTube and they feel appropriate in this context and related. First is when Bell Hooks spoke about the spectacle of violence when it came to oj’s case. Nobody really cared that a woman was abused to death, the story was oj because of his celebrity status, because he was a powerful man. Like you said, at this point it doesn’t matter what’s true. It doesn’t matter to the gp that a young girl might’ve been a victim of SA. The tragedy of what might’ve happened is removed because Jay Z is who he is and that’s what’s entertaining. To me it feels disingenuous the way most people have gone at him and Beyoncé online and in the media. I have not made up my mind about if he did or didn’t do it but I have no interest in contributing to the gross speculation and fodder. The second clip this made me think of was a conversation this filmmaker Michael haneke had about his movie Benny’s video. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the movie but I’ll share this quote from what he said discussing the movies themes; “When you learn life and reality only through the media, you have the sense that you’re missing something. ‘I’m missing the feeling of reality’ if I only see a film, only images, even images of reality, a documentary-I’m always outside, for once I wanted to know what it’s like to be an actor in reality…We see the world through the media so we’re in danger of believing that only through the media is there a reality. But it’s exactly the opposite. We allow ourselves feeling when facing an image but not when facing a person because it’s more dangerous. The image can’t react anymore.” I hope you see how I’m connecting the dots because I’m not so articulate in these comments but all of this has me thinking I need to pull away from social media almost entirely. Twitter and tiktok especially. I think the court of public opinion coming down on Jay Z before we know anything at all based in truth is a reflection of people in our society wanting to be “actors in a reality” because if they can’t control what’s going on at home, they can get online and have a real impact on a strangers life. I want to be in reality, and living on realities terms. I’ve committed myself to reading real books for entertainment now instead of incessant scrolling. Sorry if this is incoherent but great episode as always!
