This is very interesting. Been thinking about this for a while too. I think gen z+ are curious but the access to so much info and communication (social media) makes this generation more referential and orchestrated where in the past was more inspired and innovative. I liked Sinners but it also gave me a bit of distance similar to some Jordan Peele stuff seeing people looking for references and easter eggs and stuff which is a good thing but it also is like I just want people to make things and have fun innovating. One of my favorite horror movies is 13 Ghost which literally felt like sfx makeup artists and set designers got enough money to make a movie and would see what people thought. Even that had a reference to the old 13 ghost movie with the glasses but people wouldnt even know that if they didnt make interviews or dvd commentary. There hasnt been a new mainstream music genre since the whisper vibe r&b and trap of like 2012. Everythings just been references/retro music and diary confessional toxic relationship moody songs that you need parasocial connection to care about. Was just looking up ATL roller skating culture of the 80s and 90s; just people developing culture just because. No reference, just cultural production. And it connected to the ATL post-disco bass and house and emerging hip hop scenes. Underground new stuff today doesnt get time or investment to even become a new genre

*EDIT. We have had evolution of 2012 whisper vibe r&b and trap (mainly trap and drill) but i feel like that era should have ended and evolved into something new by 2021-2023. We have no new mainstream sound(s)
