Hidden Figures: Rachel Johnson #BlackHERstoryMonth 5/28

Hailing from Englewood, NJ, stylist Rachel Johnson attended HBCU Florida A&M University, where she majored in English education. Despite her major, Johnson was a fashionista at heart, and wore one-of-a-kind vintage clothing that she also sold to her fellow students, realizing that fashion could be a career. Johnson graduated from FAMU with a degree to teach English, but two years out, she scored simultaneous assistant gigs under June Ambrose and Sybil Pennix, who styled Notorious B.I.G. and Sean Combs. From there, Johnson built her own roster of music clients, including Pharrell Williams, Keyshia Cole and Jamie Foxx. In the mid-2000s, Johnson sought a career switch, and in 2005, Jay-Z introduced her to Lebron James' manager, Maverick Carter. She was hired as James’ stylist, completely revamping his off-court look, and in 2008, she styled him on the April cover of Vogue magazine. Other athletes followed suit, launching her career as an athlete stylist, and her current client list includes: Jalen Rose, JR Smith, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire, Victor Cruz, and, arguably most famously at the moment, Colin Kaepernick.
