While COVID-19 is certainly spreading, the most important thing to do right now is try and prevent the spread by WASHING YOUR HANDS, covering your mouth when you cough, and practicing social distancing like not shaking hands (which has always been disgusting) and limiting contact with huge amounts of people. Please remember that in the case you DO get it, 80% of patients will have only mild to moderate symptoms and will recover with bed rest and fluids while under quarantine and self-isolation. There is no special medicine or radical magic treatment.

Those most at risk are the elderly and those already sick with respiratory issues or a compromised immune system. There have been ZERO deaths of children. If you are between the ages of 10 and 39 you have literally a 1 in 500 chance of getting COVID-19 and dying from it. For comparison, that same demographic has a 1 in 114 chance of dying from a car accident and a 1 in 370 chance of dying from gun violence.

Also, while COVID-19 has been classified as a pandemic, please keep in mind that context is always necessary for any numbers, reports, or estimates that you may read. Just because something happened in China doesn't mean it will happen here; Wuhan, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak, has a population of 11 million people. New York City, our most densely populated city in the US, has a population of 8 million. Los Angeles? 4 million. Being so densely populated helped the spread in Wuhan. Unless you live in an area like Seattle that currently has a significant number of cases, please calm down.

Italy, which has seen a high number of deaths? 21% of their population is over 65. The amount of people over 65 in the U.S.? 7% of our population. Having such a high number of elderly sparked high deaths in Italy. You can't assume that because those things happened in Wuhan and Italy, with their different population demographics, they will happen in the United States.

The CDC and WHO saying 'be prepared' doesn't mean buying 37,000 rolls of toilet paper and giving in to panic and mass hysteria. It means being sure you have enough non-perishable food, medicine, and other goods in your home to last a few weeks in case of quarantine, making sure you wash and sanitize your hands, not touching your face, and keeping your home and objects like cell phones clean (and if you can't find standard cleaners, 91% rubbing alcohol, lemon juice, and bleach can all be used to clean). Hand sanitizer is primarily made up of rubbing/ethyl alcohol suspended in gel, and USA Today has provided a guide to creating your own hand sanitizer at home (link below). Also remember the main symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath, not sneezing, runny nose or watery eyes- that is probably allergies.

KEEP CALM and WASH YOUR HANDS! This has been a public service announcement.
