Please remember that wars are fought in a way that regular people/civilians bear the most cost. Feeling for everyone that lost their lives through the 20 Year War,  the extraction from Afghanistan, and the traumatic events of New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

From my archived IG post:

'Someone recently asked “what was the first major news story you remember?” Mine was OJ (I was young but I can remember my grandma being glued to the tv watching that white bronco), but the second would have to be 9/11. I think about this day a lot. I remember it clearly. I’m from Washington, DC and went to DCPS; that morning I was sitting in school and all of a sudden people’s parents started coming to pick them up. Names being announced over the loudspeaker. Okay, this is weird? We basically just got to school. My teacher turned on the tv. A plane hit in New York- and then another plane hit. And then a plane hit the Pentagon. An explosion at the Pentagon. Holy shit. They thought downtown was a target, the White House, the Capitol building. My mom worked downtown. I couldn’t reach her??? This is before we all had cell phones. I tried to call her job, the lines didn’t work. They locked down everything. No train or bus. Nobody picked me up. I couldn’t reach my mom. I stayed at school for a few more hours, until Grandma picked me up. She said she’d been trying to get me since the morning but there was soooo much traffic, cars everywhere. Nobody knew what was going on. Bus and train locked down, downtown shut down. Another plane headed for DC had crashed, the whole city shut down. We still hadn’t heard from my mom. The phone lines didn’t work. Scariest day ever. My mom got home at like 11 o’clock at night. Her building had been locked down. She took the train to work and couldn’t get home. Ended up catching a ride with someone that night after they let them out of the building. Scariest day ever. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years honestly because I remember this day like it was yesterday. Things changed forever.'

Thank you for verbalising how I felt the last couple of years. When the attack happened my Mother wouldn't let me and my siblings look at the news coverage because it was just too much for us to comprehend at the time. There was worry about FedEx being a target since it's headquarters is here. When I was 20 I started to look at the 9/11 docs and I was overwhelmed with grief and heartbreak. I just couldn't imagine the fright and panic folks were under. A lot of folks are so disconnected from reality saying they don't care about the 9/11 attacks and have no idea how many businesses occupied/surrounded the Twin Towers.

Vermillion!!!

I feel like people are able to say this because so much of the dialogue about America and its place in the world has been wholly mythologized by people who have fallen deep into the rhetoric and academic jargon of social justice. People love to talk about America the Concept, America the Horrible place that did the horrible thing to MY home country, not America the real place with real people, and they’re so caught up in “sticking it to white people” and decrying “American exceptionalism” that they just sort of erroneously ascribe that belief to everyone who is born here, especially Black Americans. There’s a very gross discounting of the humanity of American citizens that gets tossed into (valid) critiques of the gov’t and certain social and political institutions here, and it permeates how people take about other things that happen in the world. It’s disturbing.
