A Kick In The Teeth! Podcast E11: On 'Cruella' and The Refusal To Let Women Be Unlikable Villains (Patreon)

Unlike 'Joker' where I felt the emphasis was on showing a downward spiral, 'Cruella' tried to really give us a relatable backstory where Cruella DeVil of all people is like some innocent victim of circumstance??? They never truly let her embrace her role as a villain; even if they want to depict it as a struggle against her darker urges, they never really show her giving in to that like they should. I can't help but feel that Disney has written themselves into a corner with their refusal to embrace real darkness, for the record, women do NOT have to be likable! They do not have to be scrappy plucky anti heroines with a sad little sympathetic backstory. It is okay to make a bitch a villain.
