Main takeaways:

1. Awards are not objective markers of artistic merit and serve no real purpose in determining the validity, legacy, impact or trajectory of a career. Artists should create for themselves and not necessarily to be awarded/rewarded.

2. Awards are simply advertising for artists and as ratings events for televised shows meant to generate ad revenue.

3. Awards are also meant to uphold the status quo: the dominant white power structure, the classist capitalist matrix, and the mainstream sexist heteronormative power structure. They do not reward subversion or marginalized groups unless they have no choice. They especially replicate the ways in which we love Black American culture but hate Black American bodies.

4. Awards should be abolished or they should be made radically transparent with the voting bodies names and decisions made public.
