Hidden Figures: Anna Arnold Hedgeman #BlackHERstoryMonth 6/28 (Patreon)
Content
Hedgeman was born into a family of former slaves, where she was homeschooled until the age of seven. Her parents and grandparents emphasized the importance of usefulness, with everyone in the family giving a nightly report on how they had been useful to themselves and others that day. Civic-minded and an advocate for minorities and the poor, Hedgeman held a variety of political and philanthropic positions throughout her life, including serving as the executive director of the National Committee for a Permanent Fair Employment Practices Commission; working in the cabinet of New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr.; working on the successful Harry Truman Presidential campaign; and assisting Bayard Rustin and A. Philip Randolph in their planning of the 1963 March on Washington, the only woman on the planning committee.
