^^^ the billboard I saw that had me concerned about Gwen being the main character of the film. Honestly, I was sooo disappointed in this movie. I genuinely feel that Miles got nothing to do in the plot. I also didn’t really feel there was any character growth with Miles at all, as so many of his themes and plot points were basically rehashes from the first movie. His conflict with his parents which was also a problem in the first one. He’s growing up which was also introduced in the first one. He’s lonely/misunderstood which is also a theme from the first one. He’s also dealing with the responsibility of being Spider-Man which I think was handled better in the first one than here. He has no friends or outside interests (he doesn't even tag anymore?) because he is obsessed with Gwen. He is sidelined from the main action repeatedly because of the 'big secret' that no one is allowed to tell him.

Gwen was the main character and driver of the story; the movie really a character study for her that also advances the mythology of the Spider-Verse. Miles did nothing except follow Gwen around and respond to her actions, and his relevance to the movie is the twist at the veryyyyy end! The twist, while excellent and doing great set-up for the next movie, did not save it for me. Not to mention, this movie also suffered from 'middle movie syndrome' which is a weak plot where most of what actually happens is setup. The plot meanders all over the place in order to stretch it out for a third movie and the main antagonist, the Spot, disappears for a good chunk of the film as well, all for us to stretch out into a third one. We also ended in the middle of the conflict with no resolution which is straight up cheating the audience to me.

Two thumbs down, sorry.

Oh my God... I sooooo wanted Gwen to be a lesbian as well! Totally agree with you on that, I also hated that they shipped Miles and Gwen, I feel like Hollywood is just allergic to platonic relationship between males and females for some ridiculous reason. I agree with all your points about Gwen really, and I was kinda disappointed by her prominence as well, I felt like if they wanted to focus on her that much they should've given her a spin-off.

I thought that the twist for the third movie was gonna be that Miles wasn't actually an anomoly since his world and Earth-42 never glitches once after that spider came to Miles' universe, which is what has happened when people from other universes try to insert themselves into another. Also, when Miles was sent to Earth-42, he started glitching. Even the spider DNA from Earth-42 didn't help. I thought the vampire-spiderman was just projecting bc he fucked up another world and got retrauamtized when his alt-universe daughter died. Then again, this would mean the glitching that happened in the indian-spiderman's universe is now a plot hole... It definitely did feel like they were padidng the movie tho. All those recaps about the first movies plot and Miles'and Gwen's backstory was annoying to me. There was hardly any new information. And that was like the first 20mins of the movie. They definitely could've shuffled around the Gwen backstory to not overshadow Miles. The backstory could've been revealed when Miles was asking why she's betraying him. It definitely didn't have to be info dumped at the beginning of the movie. The love plot was irritating to me too, but mostly because it seemed like that was the only thing on Miles' mind for most of the movie. It tried to present it as him being lonely and missing his friends, but he was not thinking of B Parker as much as Gwen. I dont even remember him asking Gwen if she's seen B Parker recently when they met up again. After a couple minutes of the movie, it felt like his character started to revolve around Gwen. Also, i forgot about Miles' best non-spiderman friend. Makes it feel like Miles' loneliness was forced bc that friend knows he's spiderman. Why didn't Miles lean on him and why weren't we shown that? Spiderpunk is great tho. He was lowkey MVP by the end of it
