ORC, Kuoh, Japan

–Motohama Kenji–

Sona arrived in Rias’ office as if she owned it, had something to hold over Rias’ head, and knew that she was right. Rias also reacted as if she expected something from Sona, likely a word lashing, but fortunately for Rias, there were other people present, which is probably why Sona did not give Rias a piece of her mind.

Or, that’s what went through his head anyway. There was no distinct buzz that could indicate a spike in magic, but they could just as easily be communicating telepathically, bypassing a physical conversation anyway. Since they were in the presence of allies and one completely untrained human, there was no risk of their communications being hijacked by a third party.

“Rias.”

“Sona.”

Instead, he got this. Sona sitting right next to him, facing Rias, who looked like she would much rather sink into the larger than necessary chair she was sitting on than face Sona and her no doubt barbed words.

“I have already filed the necessary paperwork. All that is left is sending it to Satan Leviathan. That way, we can–”

“No.” He straightened up in his seat at Rias’ tone. There was a troubled expression on Akeno’s face as well, as if she was resigned to whatever was about to happen next, “We are not going to just give up and run to them at the slightest problem. This is our territory and we must–”

“Slightest?” Sona replied, leaning forward a bit, “You call a Fallen Attack on two sacred Gear holders in our territory a slight problem? Have you gone mad? This is a significant escalation from their usual moves. We must make sure that they are taken care of, either from our side or by the Grigori. You know as well as I do that there are many Fallen that do things without authorisation from their leadership. If this is one such case then–”

“Exactly!” Rias stood up, banging her hands on the table, leaning forward with an excited sparkle in her eyes, “Which is why we must take the initiative. What if they were working on their own and we were able to solve it all on our own?”

“Rias,” Sona sighingly replied, “What if they are? What then? You think we can handle a Six Winged Fallen on our own? Worse, an Eight Winged? A Cadre? Are you confident in being alive for even a second if a foe of that level attacks us?”

Rias froze at that, her energy seemingly being drained by every single word Sona spoke, until eventually, he collapsed in her seat, returning to her listless energy from before.

“We can’t call them too. You know what that will mean.”

Sona, unexpectedly, nodded and agreed with Rias, “I know. It will just call into question our ability to hold territory. That is why I have not yet sent the paperwork.”

Rias’ “Hey! I thought we agreed not to do that unless both of us agree to it!” was promptly ignored as Sona continued, “But I can’t delay that indefinitely. We can work on getting the problem solved, but I need you to agree to retreat the second I feel we are outnumbered, agreed? Also, the paperwork will be sent out, along with an SOS at a predetermined time unless we come back and deactivate it.”

Rias thought about it before she nodded, "That's fine.”

“Good,” Sona said before she finally turned around to address the elephant in the room, i.e, him. The one-third of the Perverted Trio and one-half of the Perverted Glasses.

“I assume you know all about the supernatural world?”

“Not all but enough.”

“Good. You will need it.”

“What?” He gave her a confused look.

Sona then elaborated, “You have a Sacred Gear.” Then, her eyes gained a sharp look before she turned to Rias, “You didn’t tell him?”

Rias just whistled innocently. Sona sighed and turned back to him, “You are now an unaffiliated human wielding a Sacred Gear of considerable strength. I can sense your strength even now, hidden as it might be. You have no faction and decent strength, so please expect constant recruitment attempts, not all of which will be peaceful.”

Huh. So, that’s her angel. He had to admit. A different approach from Rias, and one that might actually work. Rias worked on dangling his mother’s safety in front of him in exchange for becoming a Devil, and Sona did the same, but by emphasising the faults of other races, and projecting them as the good option.

Damn. He had to take it back. Akeno and Rias were not the good cop, bad cop duo. It was Sona and Rias, if it was scripted anyway. From Rias’ expression, this was probably just an attempt from Sona to get him.

Unfortunately, it was not going to work. He made that abundantly clear to Sona as well.

“I am sorry, but I will take my chances. I don’t want to become a devil right now. Slavery does not sound good to me.”

Sona glared at him at that, as did her Queen. Interestingly, none of Rias’ peerage members gave any reaction to that, as if they knew what it was and did not care about it. Either it meant that Rias had brainwashed them thoroughly, or they knew what it was and just accepted it either way. That made Rias a good King. Well, not that it was going to tempt him anyway.

Good King or not, she was still their King, and he had no intention of getting one.

“You sound as if you have opinions about our systems.” Sona pushed her glasses back and wow….There was actually a small buzz of magic around her glasses when they flashed right at him, despite the room being light controlled and all the lighting being either diffused or magical in origin that spread evenly throughout the room.

No overhead focused lamp that could create that effect.

He gave her an incredulous look, “Did…Did you just use magic to make your glasses flash with light?”

…..

….

…

There was a snorting sound from Rias as Sona whipped around to glare at the Crimson Devil, who promptly shut up. Sona, completely ignoring his statement, stood up slowly, “I will gather everyone and survey the city. We need to know more about their base of operations and their numbers before we can do anything. My people are better suited for that. You only have one tracker,” Sona glanced at Koenko before continuing, “So leave that to me. I will contact you soon.”

Rias nodded, “Thank you, really.”

And that was that.

Wow, what an incredibly awkward conversation. Either way, he had his answer, and he now had a mother to secure. Now, all that was left was to come up with an excuse to make sure she got into the Club building without telling her about the supernatural.

He really didn’t want to knock her out and keep her here, asleep, but he also didn’t want to deal with the fallout of telling her everything. So, he turned to Akeno, the resident mental magic user, “How long can you safely keep my mom asleep?”

Akeno blinked at him before continuing, “As long as her body has nutrients. There is a built-in safety condition that wakes the target if her body is in any danger or is running low on water, air or food.”

Huh. That was very helpful.

“Great. Come with me.”

Heaven

–Michael—

He looked at the throne, letting his wings and his entire body slouch, as it was only him in the highest level of Heaven, and no one else to look at the haggard state of their leader. Despite his obvious exhaustion, he still walked forward. After all, it was his duty.

With Father gone, it fell on him to continue running Heaven. He could ask the others to help share the burden, but he knew it wouldn’t work for long. Worse, it might just weaken them permanently, unlike him, who could take a few breaks and recover using the System itself.

The others did not have the System privileges he did, and by the time they understood some of the System’s workings, it might just be too late for them. There would be no point hurting his brothers and sisters for temporary relief from this soul draining pain.

Alas, the System was never really made to be sued by anyone other than Father, and maybe….him. Both of them were gone now, and for better or worse, all that was left was him.

Shaking his head, he sat on the Throne, hesitating only for a second before reclining in it, flinching as the System attached itself to his soul, a full body shudder escaping him as the massive avalanche of information poured into his mind.

He closed his eyes, the eyeballs moving rapidly behind his closed eyelids, as he struggled, even after all these years, to process this much information at once.

As was his habit, he immediately dismissed the less important notifications, only to pause as he felt the dreaded notification come to the forefront of the interface.

As he read it, he felt far heavier than he should.

One more, he thought to himself, lamenting the savagery and blasphemy that continued to increase in the world, the human world at that. It was hard to think that humans of all beings could indulge in cannibalism, especially against supernatural beings still connected to the System.

Only the Fallen and the Angels were connected to the System in a way that their death and life could be individually tracked.

Opening it, he blinked as he read through the details.

Two Winged Fallen. Teenage Human. One Wing. Near Certain Death. Now Alive.

It was confusing, and he certainly wished to investigate more about it, and yet, the workload in the background loomed over him, forcing him to just curse the boy and then transfer the job to the Church, as he had far more important stuff to deal with.

He wished he could handle this on his own or send in some of his siblings to do so, but not only was the country of origin Japan, the specific location was a sensitive one.

After all, Kuoh City was in the hands of the Devils, and while the Devils themselves were far better examples of morality than the vast majority of their race, they would certainly be wary of any Church presence, let alone actual Angels.

No, it was better for the Church and their people to deal with it. At least, they were all still humans in the end.

Good realistic depiction of heaven in dxd. At the end of the day there are no good guys in dxd just some factions worse than others.
