Hello gamers.

I am more tilted than I have been in a very long time. My Word Document for Runebound has killed itself. 1.5 million words are now dead. The only master doc is completely corrupted, so attempts to recover it did nothing. Thank you, Apple Word. My online backups are somehow out of date because OneDrive wasn't updated (very cool). The good news is I have a fuckton of backups. No content from previous chapters was lost...

except for my latest notes and today's chapter. Both of those are unrecoverable as the only document that had those fully updated was the one that decided to see god early.

So, uh, I'm tilted beyond belief. Losing a chapter is one of the most infuriating things that can happen as an author, especially when you feel like the chapter was an awesome one.

I'm going to be taking the day off to do a mental reset, because anything else I write right now is just going to suck.

Sorry for the delay, and thank you for your understanding.

Holy shit that’s so rough please take that time

Rajeev Roy

Sorry man sorry it happened

Matt

That is the absolute worst. Glad you didn't lose too much but I totally understand needing time to reset your brain. See you soon!

Brandon O'Bryant

At least it was only a chapter. I lost an entire book when an old IDE drive decided if it was going out it was taking everything with it.

Ywoak

Feelsbad, on a side note, I’m already reading Alex and Noah story, do you think I should read living forge ?

Dr0g

All good, I wouldn’t blame you for needing more than today off honestly… thanks for all the work you’ve done on the story, I’m personally very willing to wait for as long as you need to get back into the shape of it all

tonright

Before you do anything big check around for potential temporary save files if you're using Windows? A lot of software keeps a couple of those around in case of sudden power loss. Might be a few saves behind but that's better than losing it all.

Minocho

Aw man, that sucks! May the digital gods shine on you going forward!

sjturner79

Wow that is so bad ! Hope you feel better soon

UnderwhelmingBird

oofa, I getcha on needing a reset. having things go poorly when you've done nothing wrong/it's not your fault is a hurtful thing even when it's not playing games with your livelihood. I think the phrase is righteous indignation?

Actus

Sadly I'm using Mac, if this was windows it would have been 100% recoverable.

Emily Gurnavage

Ughh I know that feeling too well. Pages crashed in a way once that made me lose thousands of words worth of story I had just spent a lot of time thinking about and writing. Killed my motivation hard. Hopefully you can bounce back after a good sleep or somethin. The whole doc is worse than I had to deal with though. Dang.

TheRaptorOfHermes

I totally understand, good luck. Hope you get some rest to recharge

tonright

Ah. Yeah I've no idea about navigating Apple stuff at all. Sorry to hear that. Might still have temporary files somewhere? I have no idea where you'd even begin looking though. I hope you're feeling better soon. I know losing work is the worst.

From Microsoft, summarized by ai. To recover a corrupted Word file on a Mac, first try opening it through Word's "Open and Repair" feature or by using the "Recover Text from Any File" option. If those don't work, explore Apple's Time Machine or AutoRecovery for a previous version of the document. Detailed Steps: Open Word: Launch Microsoft Word on your Mac. Open File: Go to File > Open. Locate File: Navigate to the corrupted Word file. Open and Repair (If Possible): If the Open button has a downward-pointing arrow, click it and select "Open and Repair". Word will attempt to repair the file and open it. Recover Text from Any File (If Open and Repair Fails): In the Open dialog box, look for a drop-down menu labeled "Enable" or "Show". Select "Recover Text from Any File". Word will attempt to extract the text from the file, even if it's corrupted. Check Time Machine (If Necessary): Launch Time Machine by clicking its icon in the top right corner of your screen and selecting "Browse Time Machine Backups". Navigate to the folder where your Word documents are stored. Select the file and choose "Restore" to retrieve a previous version. Check AutoRecovery (If Necessary): AutoRecovery files are temporary copies of your document that Word creates automatically. Look for files starting with "AutoRecovery save of" followed by your document's name. Sort the files by date modified to find the most recent version. Save the Recovered File: Once you've recovered the file, save it with a new name to prevent further corruption.

tonright

You mentioned that it is corrupted rather than deleted. Is there a chance you might be able to force the corrupted document open in a basic text editor and copy/paste the text you want in amongst all the garbled characters and formatting? or in Google Docs (Google Drive sometimes fixes image corruption issues on upload, not sure about text). Sorry this happened either way. Take your rest day even if you do get it back. That kind of thing throws you off even if it gets fixed.

Actus

I sadly did this, the only thing in the file was “Actus” 😭

Addanc

I dunno, try and import it to something else? Maybe Open Office can convert the file to ODF format successfully? Ask Reddit? Maybe someone there might have an idea

tonright

That's so insulting. Thinking it's recovered then it's just your name. I couldn't help but read it in an exasperated tone. If that were me I think it would be better without the false hope of thinking it worked

Green0Photon

Ahhhhhhhhhh that's the worst!!! This always tilts me too.

Prospector of Sagas

That is awful. I'm so so sorry that happened. I don't know much about writing programs besides google docs and microsoft word but I'm enraged with you. As always take all the time you need we'll be here. Take the weekend off if you need it we'll be fine.

Alexander Dupree

There’s probably some stuff you can do by unmounting your hd drive and scanning it from an in memory OS. Heck you might be able to read the section of the drive in OSX. It’s a Unix type and based on BSD so it’s pretty easy to manipulate if you’re willing to poke around in the terminal. You might need to find the ARM versions of any recovery programs though if you’re on an Mx machine. There’s almost certainly some terminal command to poke around for the techs.

Jeff

not sure if apple does anything weird compared to MS, but if it's a 'docx' - you could try using a zip program to unzip the word document, then just poke around the files that extract out of it (look for the biggest size file inside, probably 'document.xml') then search inside that for anything you remember writing recently.

Levi

MS auto recovery sucks ass. You might be able to recover your doc from hidden temp files Open Finder, press Shift + Command + G, and enter ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/Word/Startup/ Look for files with the .tmp extension and try opening them in Word.

Brian Small

Dude, that sucks, I’m sorry, get some rest

Clay Price

For what it is worth dear author, every single chapter released on Wednesday was such a banger I personally wouldn’t even notice the delay from still rereading ‘yesterdays’ for the Nth time

bioenthusiast

I feel man, I am getting my PhD in micro and we had these take home graduate tests. these things are like six paragraph questions with each answer being multiple pages. word decided to eat 4 pages of my answers. I now use google doc.

Chris

Man, that sucks. Hopefully you can get most of it back somehow. Obviously this doesn't help you now, but it may be worth a thought going forward. I don't write novels, but program code and this is basically all plain text. For everything that does not need fancy formatting (documentation, todo lists, notes, more or less everything I write), I just write it in markdown, then check it in to a git repository as needed. Since it is all plain text, there are lots of free tools to search or compare previous versions and when I need to send it to someone, I convert it to html or pdf, also with free tools. Also, I have yet to see a text editor that corrupts a plain text file (though admittedly, I never wrote anything even approaching 1.5M words in a single file).

Max Lopo

Dude. Stop using apple products. It's like having a temperamental sapient oven with the attitude of controlling hyperjealous psycho girlfriend who somehow you decided to place in charge of your finances.

Ash

Holy fuck dude. That sucks. Take all the time you need to reset.

Mechanist Grimm

Take your break man, sometimes you have to step back and breath for a minute. We'll live and probably get distracted by cat videos or something anyways.

thomas

Completely get that man, I'd be just as tilted lol. Take the time you need ❤️

Nibbleicious

hey dont worry about it!! its no biggie, we'd rather you get a good rest in than pushing yourself to post something you aren't happy with!! its ok to take a break 🫶🫶

M

100% yes, it’s great

Verdauga

Completely understandable, best of luck.

Firel Dakuraito

Take care! You more than deserve the reset :)

Douglas LK

I understand, lost my work many times because of electricit company incompetence and libre office crapness

Melody Haren Anderson

As someone who has had problems like this with my RPG writing, only sympathy here and a pox on the buggy code. I don't know what'd be better. MS Word made black text on white paper invisible when you use the wrong themes... a THEME broke it!

Ryan

I felt this in my bones.

Addison Grimes

Oh Lordy that sucks. Day off is 100% right call , maybe some sake too

Bob of Doom

Right..."Lost it " Very funny. You don't have to lie to us. Obviously the chapter was sacrificed to the gods in an attempt to stave off the destruction of our universe by your arch nemesis, Actus with a goatee, and in the process the gods took the entire story instead. They can be greedy like that. I am willing to wait because of your immense sacrifice for us.

TechB

I feel for you. Old people like me have been dealing with issues like this since the 90s. It's ridiculous that we still have to deal with corrupted data.

Nathan V

Yep had this happen too My scrivener files are all backed up in like seven different places. Take the day and reset. I will be looking forward to the new and improved chapter tomorrow.

Apep

That is a Word issue, it is really crappy for big projects even under Windows. Something like Scrivener would probably more stable.

Anakin Mas

Yeah... Apple is shit. you should put it in a hard drive directly lol

Kenshii

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Rob Sie

Fck the machines

The Creation Hub

It’s happened to me. Unfortunately word for both Microsoft and Apple just aren’t meant for storing that quantity of data

kp8080

I do IT for a living. Most Word documents are zip files with the content organized in a complicated way. It may be possible to recover stuff from it. Would you be willing/able to send me a copy I could poke at? It's been a long time since I used a mac, but you could also try changing the extension from .docx to .zip. You could then try opening it to see if the basic structure of the file is intact. If it is, you might be able to salvage text out of the xml files inside.
