“You have a class?” Arwin exclaimed, so surprised that he couldn’t keep the words from slipping free from his mouth.

Wallace and Koyu sent him confused looks.

“You spend a bit too much magic on the armor, Arwin?” Wallace asked with a frown. “Maybe you should sit down. I’d damn well hope I have a class. Otherwise, I’ve been talking out my ass for the past few dozen years.”

“Not you,” Arwin said. “The Armory.”

“Wallace is right. Take a breather. The Armory can’t have a class,” Koyu said with a shake of his head. “It’s a building.”

A pillar of red mist twisted into being beside them. An invisible form shifted through it as the Armory made itself manifest.

“But it seems that is not the case,” the Infernal Armory said. “I am no mere building. I would thank you not to refer to me as such.”

“You’re telling me you have a class?” Wallace tugged at his beard. “From what? Making the armor?”

“So it seems.” Mist twisted in what Arwin suspected to be either delight or excitement. "There is power within me that I have never felt before. Magic. Not power borrowed from anyone, nor drawn from materials fed to me, but power of my own.”

“What kind of class is it?” Koyu inquired. “This is… foreign. Even to me. I’ve never heard of a crafted object growing powerful enough to gain a Class of its own. Even the most powerful artifacts aren’t capable of such things.”

A thought struck Arwin. His eyes narrowed.

Hold on. There’s no way, is there?

“The Living Forge,” Arwin said. “That’s your class, isn’t it?”

There was a moment of silence.

“No,” the Infernal Armory said. “That isn’t it.”

“Oh,” Arwin said. The wind fell from his sails and he sheepishly cleared his throat. “I kind of thought the Mesh was having a laugh at our expense by giving you — oh, never mind. It did feel appropriate.”

“It does,” Wallace admitted. A grin played across his lips as he let out a chuckle. “Seems suitable. Would be hilarious if the build — er, if the Infernal Armory managed to get a Thief class. Could you imagine a whole arsed forge tryna’ sneak up on you in the street?”

“That would be quite the sight,” Koyu said. “So what is the name of this class you obtained?”

“The Infernal Armory,” the armory replied.

“Your Class name is… your name?” Arwin asked. He tilted his head to the side. “Really? I can’t tell if the Mesh is trying to be smart or lazy. What abilities do you have? Did you get any?”

“I did,” the armory confirmed. “But much of them are what I was already capable of doing. Controlling aspects of what resides within my walls. But that isn’t all. It seems many of my abilities are tied—”

“To the armor,” Arwin finished, his eyes going wide in realization. “That’s it. The Armory got a class because it has a body.”

“Fascinating,” Wallace said. “What are the other abilities? Anything useful?”

“There are some interesting ones,” the armory said noncommittally. “There is one that seems promising. It allows me to create a temporary forge at the location of my new body when I have sufficient materials. It will allow me to continue my work, even when Arwin has decided to leave Milten for yet another inexplicable reason.”

That’s… pretty sweet, actually.

“A portable forge,” Wallace breathed in delight. “I’ll be damned. Do you have any idea what some of the other Dwarven Smiths would pay for something like that? They’ve been trying to find a way to port their whole setups out of their volcano-holes for years.”

The armory let out a dissatisfied scoff. “They hold no interest to me. I wish to rest and investigate my class further.”

Then the red mist parted, billowing into clouds that broke against the ceiling of the room before fading away.

Arwin, Koyu, and Wallace were left alone within the inside of the Infernal Armory. No trace of the pumping lava or scraps of metal that they had gone through while creating the Gehenna armor remained.

Even the armor itself was gone, stored within [Arsenal].

Someone could have walked into the building at this very second and, if not for the exhaustion dragging down every one of the three’s features, thought that they’d been doing absolutely nothing since they’d stepped into the smithy that morning.

“Sure cleans up well,” Wallace said. He scratched at his beard. “Can’t tell if I like it or not. The mess kind of makes me feel like I did something, you know? Right up until I have to toss it all out. Then it’s a royal pain in the ass.”

“It saves me a lot of time and feeds the armory,” Arwin said with a shrug. “And time is one thing I can never get enough of. I’d rather be spending it with Lillia and the rest of the Menagerie than sitting around sweeping metal.”

“Fair enough,” Wallace said. He paused. “Especially if we get some of Lillia’s—”

“Finest. Yes, we’ve heard it,” Koyu said. He adjusted his ragged clothes. “On with it, then. I’ve never participated in the creation of something that I’ve actually been excited to see someone’s reaction for. It is a foreign feeling to me, but I would very much like to see what the rest of the Menagerie thinks of Gehenna.”

“Then we’ll get right to it in a moment,” Arwin said. “I want to take a look at my new ability offers. Feel free to go ahead if you want.”

“We can wait,” Wallace said with a wave of his hand. “If anything, I’m curious to see what you’re going to get at this point. Your class is such an odd mishmash of different things that the Mesh must get a headache trying to come up with something to offer you.”

Koyu nodded in agreement, and Arwin saw no reason to waste a second longer. A part of him was surprised the Mesh had waited this long. He normally didn’t find it was particularly willing to wait for him, but he certainly wasn’t about to complain. Arwin eagerly turned his attention to the last of the glowing messages hanging in the air before him.

Alright. Let’s see what there is to choose from this time around.

You may select one of the following skills.

[UPGRADED][Metal Wraith] – Increase the bond granted by [Arsenal] to all items within it, allowing you to swap locations with any bound item . The amount of time needed for [Metal Wraith] to activate and magical energy consumed scales on the distance between yourself and the item. Repeated activations of [Metal Wraith] in a short amount of time will require greater amounts of magical energy.

[UPGRADED][Eyes of Scouring Flame]: Bring [Soul Fire] to your eyes, imbuing them with power to grant you the ability to see the magical effects and structures within materials. Peering deeply enough into a material while this effect is active will trigger a Vision.

[UPGRADED][Shroud of the Harbinger](Passive) – Loosen the restraints binding your soul, allowing it to partially meld with the Awakened weapons in your possession and strengthen yourself within any Visions. This ability can be activated, allowing the full potential of your soul to burst free in in a wave of magical pressure around you. The direction and intensity of the pressure can be controlled by applying extra magical energy to this ability. Magical entities impacted by this pressure react in a way dependent on the difference between their strength and that of the source of this ability.

[UPGRADED][Soul Spike] – Empower your next strike to inject your soul into its target and strike directly at their own soul. Damage done in this manner takes significantly longer to heal on both the physical and soul level. Repeated applications of this ability can cause permanent damage to both you and your target’s soul. Striking a magical material with [Soul Spike] will weaken its resistance against your desires.

For a few moments after Arwin finished reading, he could do nothing but stare in mute analysis. These abilities were some of the longest ones he’d gotten — and not one of them was weak.

Shit. The Mesh is really shelling out now, isn’t it? This class is incredible. When I was the Hero, the abilities I was getting in Adept Tier were completely worthless. That must be the difference between just getting rushed through the levels by the Adventurer’s Guild practically feeding me kills and actually earning and learning myself.

I’m pretty sure that I’m already more than a tier stronger than I was back when I was the Hero at an equivalent rank… and these abilities have the potential to make that gulf even wider.

Arwin forced himself to reign his thoughts back in. He couldn’t get too excited and end up choosing the wrong ability on accident. All of them were good options, but he had to select the best one.

And some of them… some of them concerned him a bit. These weren’t just powerful. They had the potential to be devastating.

Koyu and Wallace watched on with interest as Arwin stood there, brow furrowed and arms crossed. His fingers drummed as he read over the literal walls of shimmering gold text floating before him.

I need to look at more than just the surface. Some of these seem like they’ll have a lot more application than what’s immediately obvious.

So which one do I go with?

Chapter 458

The skills waited patiently as Arwin examined them. While he wasn’t sure which one was objectively the best yet — he didn’t have too much trouble finding one that he definitely wouldn’t take.

[Soul Spike] was dangerously close to the bad aspects of Soulmancy. Striking materials to shatter their souls and force them to form into the shape he wanted instead of convincing them or finding pieces that actually wanted to work with him…

Arwin had absolutely no desire to do that. There were more than enough materials that were willing to play ball. Soulmancy was meant to be a collaborative effort. Smashing the shit out of his partners so they had to obey his commands was just completely opposite to his goals.

Not to mention that its other effect is making lasting injuries to opponents. That’s more for torture than a normal battle. I don’t need that.

Arwin’s attention was next drawn to [Eyes of Scouring Flame]. The ability promised benefits to his smithing that he definitely wasn’t going to ignore. Being able to see within his components to work out exactly the best way to use them was certainly appealing.

It was also completely opposite to everything Wallace had taught him. Dwarven smithing was about feelingdesires. It wasn’t a purely logical science. It was an art. And when Soulmancy came into the mix, that was only even more true.

All the information he needed came from actually speaking with his materials. From hearing their desires and feeling their wills. Being able to look at them wasn’t going to change anything too meaningful.

And that left him with two options. [Metal Wraith] seemed like it was purely a combat focused spell. There was definitely something appealing about flinging a dagger at somebody and then swapping positions with it just in time to hammer them in the face.

But I’m not exactly a speed focused fighter. This certainly wouldn’t be a bad option to add to my wheelhouse. Teleportation is a damn powerful and versatile ability. I just don’t know if it’s the best one. It also has no application for anything crafting related and has some drawbacks for over usage.

[Shroud of the Harbinger] was the only ability remaining. It had applications for both combat and crafting, but it was also probably the vaguest of all the offerings he’d gotten. Arwin wasn’t entirely sure what exactly it meant by impacting entities.

He chewed his lower lip for a few seconds in thought as he went back over the options. But, in the end, only one ability truly stuck out to him. Vague or not, [Shroud of the Harbinger] had the most potential to be useful. It would also get stronger the more Awakened items he created.

With a thought, Arwin selected the new ability.

There was a thunk from somewhere deep within him, like a key being slammed into a lock and given a firm turn. Arwin’s chest thumped as a loud buzz erupted in his ears and a knot suddenly formed in his stomach. It was like he’d swallowed a brick of steel.

Then all of the sensation vanished as one, and he was exactly as he had been.

Arwin blinked. He looked down at his hands, brow furrowed, and glanced up to Koyu and Wallace.

“Done?” Wallace asked. He squinted at Arwin for a moment. “Did you do something?”

“I’m not entirely sure,” Arwin said. “I did choose a new ability, though. Do I seem different?”

Koyu grunted. “Something is changed… but my senses aren’t as keen as they once were. I’m not picking it up. What manner of ability did you take?”

“One that connects my soul with my Awakened gear,” Arwin replied. “There’s a small passive effect. I guess it isn’t too significant. That’s probably good, but I don’t want to screw around with it right now. Lillia and the others are waiting for us.”

Wallace shrugged. “Never going to say no to a chance to drink some of the good stuff. I’m with you.”

“Then let’s get to it,” Arwin said. He clapped Koyu on the shoulder. “And this time, you stick around for the afterparty, yeah? Enough slipping away the moment nobody is looking.”

Koyu hesitated for a moment. Then he inclined his head. “I will consider it.”

“All I can ask for,” Arwin said with a grin. He started to turn toward the door, but paused as something caught his eye. His smile faded and his brow creased as he tilted his head slightly to the side. “Hm.”

“What is it?” Wallace asked. He and Koyu both looked in the direction of Arwin’s gaze.

Standing in the corner of the Infernal Armory, where it always resided, was his Soul Guardian. The suit of Ivorin Armor didn’t look like it had so much as twitched from its spot since Arwin had first put it there. Its polished sheen was untouched by dust and unmarred by any fingerprints.

At least, it should have been. Arwin could have sworn that was how it had been when he’d arrived in the Infernal Armory that morning. But something had changed. It was so small that he’d barely even noticed it, but there were a few specks of something dark on the Soul Guardian’s right fist.

“I see nothing out of the ordinary,” Koyu said.

I guess some specs of something must have gotten on it while we were working. I’ll have to clean it later. I really can’t be bothered right now.

“Never mind,” Arwin said with a shake of his head. “I think I’m just seeing things. Probably tired from all the smithing we just did. Let’s get moving, shall we? It’s late enough that we should be able to get the tavern all to ourselves soon enough.”

***

Eleven rested her chin in the palm of her hand as she sat at her favorite corner table in the Devil’s Den. It was in a perfect comfortable shadow, out of the way of the majority of the hubbub that tended to make itself at home in the inn.

She yawned, then took a sip from her mug without even budging her chin, somehow managing not to spill a single drop. It was a technique that had taken her quite some time to learn. She was rather proud of it.

Lillia is getting stronger. She’s starting to block me out. I was able to travel around her tavern and snoop on things pretty easily just a short while ago… but now she’s managing to block me out of conversations.

Eleven yawned again. She didn’t really mind about being cut out of a few important exchanges. No guild was going to want somebody spying on everything. Eleven had ways of finding out important things regardless of what actions anyone took to stop her.

What she was really interested in was that Lillia was actually strong enough to interfere with her. For several minutes a few hours ago, right after the idiot dwarf had been dragged screaming into the tavern, the innkeeper had managed to completely and utterly block Eleven out.

And that wasn’t all. Lillia’s aura was growing stronger. It seemed to happen at a rate far steadier than any normal boost to strength should have. Lillia had been little more than a slightly interesting adventurer when they’d first met.

Now, she had enough strength to make Eleven’s senses prickle. A twisting aura followed her around like a monster lurking within her shadow.

I’m really quite curious to see what they do for the Blacktongue party. I passed it off to them, just like One told me to… but I was having my doubts they’d actually accomplish much. The Blacktongues may well be useless, but the people attending that event are not.

The Guild is not sending pushovers. There are some enemies strong enough that One wanted me to personally oversee this to make sure things don’t go too poorly. Now I’m wondering if that’s even necessary.

I can’t wait to see Lillia in action again. I can’t miss it this time.

As for Arwin — well, he was strong, but I haven’t seen him advance anywhere near at the rate that Lillia has. I suppose there’s only so much one can expect. He’s already impressive enough as he is. We can’t hope for two anomalies. After all, Lillia—

Something prickled against of Eleven’s thoughts.

And then it screamed a warning.

Her eyes snapped to the door of the tavern, cutting through the darkness and past the adventurers that still remained within the tavern. She shot to her feet, power pooling within her as she lowered into a fighting stance.

Something was coming.

Goosebumps raced across Eleven’s flesh and the hair on her arms stood on end. Her senses were keen enough to know when danger was approaching — and this was a step beyond it.

The entrance to the inn swung open.

What is someone like this doing in Milten? And how did they show up so suddenly? The amount of power pouring off someone this powerful should place them at around the peak of Expert Tier. There’s no way I wouldn’t have sensed someone at that level until they were already at the door!

Eleven tensed.

And into the room stepped Arwin.

Eleven stared in disbelief. It couldn’t be possible. She’d just seen him that morning. This power couldn’t have belonged to him. But her thoughts could not change what was. There could be no mistaking it.

The deathly aura was coming right from Arwin.

What is going on?

Is his soul strength being augmented by each of his bonded items? Or just the addition of Gehenna is THAT drastic. Either way, she forgot that Arwin is a crafter, his strength is determined by his gear.

Crow Says Caw

““Seems suitable. Would be hilarious if the build — er, if the Infernal Armory managed to get a Thief class. Could you imagine a whole arsed forge tryna’ sneak up on you in the street?”” The visual for this made me laugh so much Heck yeah Arwin is moving into seriously OP territory TFTC!

Really, Eleven ? You fell headfirst into the trap of underestimating the MC ? Aren’t you supposed to be a super spy or something ?

Tsorov

Or his soul is already strong from before, because his hero class improved it or because he travelled between worlds, and was strengthend even more by the soul lava trial. Now that his soul influences his awakened items, including the new legendary growth armor, the effect compounds and makes him stronger? Could also be that now that the infernal armory has a body, eleven can feel the connection and the combined strength of them both.

No she just thought that Lillia was the MC, Lillia is prettier than Arwin after all. So I can see the confusion.

Ty

I'm thinking the massive difference is one part genuine strength increase as a reward from crafting Gehenna, another part perhaps from his deeper soul bonding to his awakened items and perhaps an echo of their power as well, and further intensified by Arwin finding out what happened with gideon and his street and guild member being tossed thru a building the moment he stepped outside and put two and two together from the obvious destruction and crumbled buildings.

" YOU CAN'T SEE -GROG- INFERNAL ARMORY!"

Ben Bass

TYFTC! I wonder how much of the power is Arwin’s new ability coupled with Gehenna, Gehenna is providing power and Arwin just set his soul up to couple better with his Awakened items. I do think it is funny how Eleven was just talking about how Arwin hadn’t been growing as fast as Lilia, and then he goes and does THAT. Now, when Arwin noticed the Soul Guardian, was that due to his deeper connection to it?
