Grim took a seat in the corner of the Transport Cannon, his back hunched in about seven different spots to keep his head from tearing through the ceiling above. Humans really didn’t have any sense of scale anymore.

If one was to seal out the majesty of the stars above with a roof, then they could have at least had the decency to make the roof grand. He’d have even settled for one that hadn’t been built to house ants.

Unfortunately, he got neither. Grim suspected Noah wouldn’t have been particularly happy if he accidentally destroyed the Transport Cannon. That would have been less than ideal. There were a very select few things that Grim wanted to avoid.

Pushing Noah too far was one of them. After all, he’d never had an easier time getting his hands on good runes in his lives. Grim felt remarkably like what he suspected what one of the fat housecats he’d eaten at some point in the distant past did.

Life was good when you were pampered. Sure, he had to steal an extra rune here or there, but this was without a doubt the easiest any manner of his existence had it in a very long time. It brought back old memories.

Ones so distant that he could barely even recall much more than their taste. But they were ones that he would have given nearly anything to feel again. He — they — were so close. The doors to infinity were just a short few steps away.

Perhaps Noah would already be at them if he didn’t have this… gaggle of creatures following him around. Then again, they seemed to motivate him. Perhaps a purpose was exactly what someone like him needed.

A flicker of distaste passed through Grim. He’d gotten a great deal more of Noah’s memories than he would have liked. Nothing could have prepared him for the immensity of the hellish existence that was stored within the man’s soul.

All those years never should have been allowed to remain in any mortal creature’s mind before it had ascended to the point to process such things. The man’s soul had been warped beyond belief even before it had been blended together with that of a demon.

It was a minor miracle that he still even had the coherence to speak. Perhaps these little ducklings were exactly the reason why Noah was still able to keep himself focused on anything at all.

Grim had seen exactly what would happen without their influence. When everything was stripped bare and the rune that had been soaking within the true essence of Noah’s soul finally started to manifest itself.

The amount of Chaos energy that it had called was terrifying. That shoddy, poorly put together Rune… the fact that it had nearly begun the ascension to godhood was ludicrous. Grim didn’t even want to think about how much potential would have been lost if it had happened, but he couldn’t help but wonder just how powerful Noah would become when he did manage to properly ascend.

I must ensure that happens. There has never been a Herald like this. Even the past one — well, he is of no matter. His mind is scattered in so many different places that any thoughts he may as well die from one part of his mind to the next.

Grim looked across the room. It had filled considerably since he’d last checked. Noah’s damned soul was ruining his already poor perception of time. He’d managed to lose a few minutes just sitting there in his own thoughts.

In that time, Lee had somehow gathered every one of Noah’s little goblins. There were quite a few of them, and even though Grim had really paid the majority of them little attention, Noah’s memories filled in the gaps.

The core group was of the most interest to him. Isabel, Todd, Emily, James, and Alexandra — all of them were leagues above the others in their own ways. They had potential even in spite of their low-ranked runes.

That wasn’t even to mention Lee and Moxie. The two of them stood entirely on a separate level. Their potential was incredible. Grim found his attention drawn particularly to the latter.

He could sense the power within Moxie in a way that he had never felt from anyone else within this pathetic little petri dish of an empire. Sure, Sievan had been heavily involved in her creation, but the woman had built the rune herself.

She was well on her path to power. Even without Grim or Noah’s influence, it was only a matter of time until she achieved it. Lee likely wouldn’t be far behind her. The small demon’s appetite was so intense that Grim could feel the malicious aura coiling within her like a snake unhinging its jaws.

That wasn’t to say the others were weak. Eline was on the same path as James, just well behind him. Yulin’s path was similar to Alexandra’s, but she didn’t have nearly as much drive as the other girl did.

The demons held some interest for Grim themselves — and that was only partially because he wanted to eat them.

In time, they would make a suitable honor guard.

He just had to make sure they lived that long. Noah was currently busy sleeping off the immense amounts of damage his soul had taken. That was vital for him — but the others couldn’t afford to waste time while he recovered.

So, unfortunately, the task of fulfilling Noah’s duties fell to him.

“Is this everyone?” Grim asked. “Or have we lost a few between the cracks?”

“This is all of us,” Isabel said, caution and worry mingling in her voice. “What’s going on? Lee just said we had to come immediately. Did something happen? Why is—”

“Noah will be fine,” Grim said. “He is simply taking a little rest.”

Isabel sent him a sharp look. “Who?”

Grim tilted his head to the side. His memories weren’t the clearest, but he was pretty sure that —

“Ah,” Grim said. “You are attempting to protect his identity. That is of no matter. Nobody here is capable of bringing harm to him. The Empire will not last nearly long enough for his identity to carry weight.”

“What are you talking about?” Yulin asked.

“The man behind me is not Vermil,” Grim said. “I don’t remember which of you know and which don’t, but Vermil was a pathetic worm with no worth to his name. I will not dishonor the Herald by sullying his name with one of a coward. Your professor is Noah Vines.”

“Did he give you permission to reveal that information?” Tim asked with a frown.

“He gave me permission to do what was necessary,” Grim replied simply. “And it was necessary for me to ensure you all understand exactly who it is you are working with.”

“I knew there was something off about him. He didn’t act like a Linwick at all,” Eline muttered.

“So… he is a demon?” Yulin hedged.

“No,” Grim said. “He is something different. That is not relevant. What is relevant is that we have obtained a few runes that he would like distributed to you. It is generally inadvisable to advance too quickly — but the circumstances call for it. You will simply have to give your souls some time to stabilize once we’re done.”

“Whoa,” Todd said. “What exactly happened? You just found runes?”

“No,” Grim said. “Noah killed the heads of the Torrin and Herron families. I am now in possession of the majority of their runes, which he broke into chunks to distribute among you.”

“He did what?” Yulin asked, aghast. “Biya? He killed a Rank 6?”

“Yes,” Grim said. “Two of them. That is what I just said. He killed them and took their runes. I will now distribute them to you. If you do not yet have a plan for advancing to the next rank, I would strongly suggest you begin thinking about it.”

“Shit,” Yulin breathed. “I can’t believe it. A second Torrin Head dead… so soon after the first.”

“Noah killed her too,” Grim said, no shortage of amusement in his voice. “It seems he has a bit of a habit of hunting Torrins. Is this a problem to you?”

“No,” Yulin said. “I’ve only promised to fight alongside one Torrin, and it isn’t Exal.”

“Wasn’t,” Grim corrected. “But I don’t have the energy to stick around forever. We must begin. Whoever has the strongest idea of what they want their next rank rune to be, approach. Everyone else should think — and quickly — as to what it is they will become.”

There were a few moments of silence as everyone stood, glancing at each other as they tried to figure out who should go first.

Grim’s eyes flicked to Moxie. He could feel the stability coming from within her soul. Even without a domain of his own, there was no doubt that she was the farthest along out of everyone. She certainly wasn’t timid, either.

“Why are you waiting?” Grim asked, pointing a slender finger at her. “You should be first.”

“Me too? I thought we were just pushing the students ahead a little,” Moxie said, her eyes widening. “Wait. How many runes did Noah get?”

Grim smiled. “Enough to make sure every single being in this room has gone up an entire rank by the time Noah awakes. And that is exactly what we will do.”

Wow well we’ve got a small army tuning into a bigger army

I wasn't ready to see Grim embark on the full Noah Suite character. Those were interesting insights. Funny that he feels he's getting treated right :) "You're professor is Noah Vines". I so wish Jalen, Brayden, Silvertide and Bird had been there for this reveal 😂

Ben Riker

It's time. For a rune montage.

JohnSnowden

Damn Actus, the continuous chapter home runs have been great! Thanks for the awesome story

Richard Davis ll

didn't know I could have a gif as my profile pic thanks for that info

Fuckin eh let's power up!

Emily Gurnavage

"Grim felt remarkably like what he suspected what one of the fat housecats he’d eaten at some point in the distant past did." Bad unimaginable abomination of soul twisting necromantic origins! Bad! We do not eat kitty cats in this story!

Lee

I like we got a glimpse in Grim’s headspace. Also even Grim acknowledges these people are important to Noah and even HE treats them with respect. Even if he’s dangerous I appreciate the character development of this nuanced character (or book). Looks like Orlen or Loren was a herald? And Grim was possibly his book? So much pieces? I could be wrong but that meddle mind space reminds me of Orlen. Okay. Let’s talk it out. (Personally I really love this web novel. I feel like involved in a weekday book club).

Ywoak

Im loving Grim as a character, and the fact that he is dead set on assisting Noah as best as he can until godhood, I love strong allies ex especially those as interesting as it

Aironfaar

Ah. Ah, yeah. The "because he wanted to eat them" bit makes sense, given how demons are tied so closely to their runes that you could say they *are* their runes already at much lower ranks. That said, it also kind of makes sense to stitch a bunch of different demons together to create a grimoire that can store insane amounts of runes; following the earlier thought, you could outright call that a patchwork tapestry of runes. Eat a demon, eat some runes, assimilate some more beings into your patchwork. You are what you eat, eh?

Emily Gurnavage

I feel like Grim is maybe about to get a whole lot more unstable, and a whole lot more talkative/part of the story. He's got the power to be a bit more part of the group now, everyone knows about him, and it sounds like he absorbed enough of Noahs memories to go even crazier than he already was. Remember how unstable Noah was back when he was still losing track of time? Oof. Good. Need more funny-ness again with both Jaylen and Mascot gone.

Chris Welsh

Seems like some very strong hints around the identity of the previous “herald”, although I’d recheck the grammar here: > His mind is scattered in so many different places that any thoughts he may as well die from one part of his mind to the next.

Andrew Denton

Um, I don't have anything to add. I just want to say thank you for inviting me to the book club, and I'm happy to be here.

Aironfaar

Eye of the Tiger has started playing in my mind and I blame you. 👀

Philipp Battenberg

It's nice to see how Noah is corrupting Grim with his teacher sensibilities.

realitiesincrease

The cat and Jalen. I just can't. One of the funniest duos i read about in ages. Imagine if Noah fixes Mascott right on Renewal's Lap from a distance.

Crow Says Caw

Yeah couple of grammatical errors in the text but I think you’re probably right on the hints - it’s the dude with the name that is an anagram. I forgot who. Orlen? Something like that

Crow Says Caw

I think it’s because he sees him as his ticket to eternity. And has also deduced that to oppose him is to COURT DEATH! 🤣

Crow Says Caw

I too am happy to be a part of the weekly book club! I love commenting and theorising each chapter 👍❤️

Chris Welsh

Yes, the one with the face situation

Crow Says Caw

GIFs don’t show on my reader, but I’ve gone for a meme so thanks!

Firel Dakuraito

I can live with Grim end goal being access to the Astral? Afterlife?.... to the space filled with runic energy. I am still sceptical towards him, but this chapter does paint him in good light. He is going to share a TON of energy after all.

Arnon Parenti

Goodbye Arbalest, so long and thanks for all the runes.

Firel Dakuraito

Lorne/Orlen Two shrapnels of the same mind/person? Yeah, it felt right that Grim was talking about them. And not only because of lack of other candidates, but also because that is THE character that comes to mind when chaotic mind is mentioned. I would honestly not be surprised if Lorne heard about our earth Cloud technology, and literaly threw his brain at first literal cloud to just beam his conciousness from there.... and still continue to work

Prospector of Sagas

Very excited to see everybody powering up. The two I'm most interested in are Lee and Todd. Lee is strange because her Runes might be more less or different demonic Runes now because of her greater demonic power. They might not even need demonic Runes now because they stole enough from decras to make a version of a rune of self from decras's runic energy. I'm curious to see how Lee functions now. Todd has many possibilities for what he makes his Runes. He could take the fire and water Runes to make a semblance of heat and pressure and with stone make his Runes Diamond flavored. He could go with Oceanic Volcano for his rune. He could go a step further if he knows some science and make a Cavitation Shrapnel rune where he changes his magic from explosions to implosions. He could focus on the explosion version but idk what form that would take. The others I am interested in like Moxie or Isabel seem to have paths laid out for them so I'm just interested to see if their Runes do what they want or if something new like Noah's chaos rune comes up. OH OK wait maybe moxie starts on the path of an Order rune because she controls the balance of life and death. As always excellent chapter, can't wait to see where this goes from here.

DeltaV

Only squirrels! The fat ones, and the blade wielding ones too!

yazu

now that's a fun theory. i hope whatever he ended up doing is gonna break some more norms

yazu

i wonder if grim will end up being a host for spider if he keeps absorbing parts of noah

Winfin

A rune montaging montage

bananaphone

hey, can someone point me approx. at a chapternumber, because for the life of me i cannot remember lorne... O.o I think i am reading too many novels at once i fear. (was that the guy cutting up faces? or is that another novel? xD)

Lee

Oooh. I like that concept. What happens if he uses people and things for his mind or soul (think Horcrux)? That would be so interesting.

Lee

Anyone is welcome! I love to see everyone’s ideas! I really enjoy it. I hope one day during any convention we meet this mad genius Actus.

Lee

I actually frown when I read that part. No eaten of any pets.

Lee

Wait. I think Grim is greedy. Also I think of the opposite, Grim is becoming more stable. I believe this is a worse scenario than what you mentioned. He’s starting to interact with the the group that means he’s starting to be swayed by Noah’s thoughts. He’s starting to care and that’s not good. How is that not a good thing: What happened to Seymour when he couldn’t eat and appetite became too much? He turned on his caretaker and surrounded individuals.

Spencer Needler

I feel like grim will end up being an outlet for Noah’s chaos so that it doesn’t end up changing his personality kind of like a pressure valve for all that excess energy

Emily Gurnavage

Exactly! Squirrels and rabbits - yum. Pets - off limits.

Lee

I don’t think so. In theory, since he has the rune of self his rune shouldn’t effect (or affect - help me out I struggle) him too deeply. But that soul damage on the line is what we need to consider. He hasn’t really tackled that. Luckily the demon he hosted actually helped him out and locked it away. That trauma has been knocking for a while.

Ywoak

Which I’m absolutely fine with, the best relation those 2 can have is mutual benefice

Lee

Sorry buddy. I don’t remember the chapter number. Lorne is the dude that literally scattered face. There’s belief he is very important. Wizen (sticky’s previous master rune user, went into damned plains because of dude, mentioned orlen/loren). We (readers) believe he is another “herald” and leads og and other demons.

realitiesincrease

I just saw "Lee replied to your comment". Only downhill from there normally. But then you talk about greed and the impossibility to eat more. Lee? Are you cheese? 😂

Xurszi

If they gathered everyone then Brayden, Silverside and Bird should be present.

JC Silver

TFTC! Note: the following passage should probably be edited for clarity. "His mind is scattered in so many different places that any thoughts he may as well die from one part of his mind to the next. "

Ryan

Power Leveling at its finest.

Firel Dakuraito

I dont think Wizen went into damned plains because of Orlen. But thanks to him. Like Orlen was the main source of information that helped him learn about Sievan and how he can help Wizen reach the afterlife. Wizen went to damned plains and afterlife for his daughter, until Noah explained to him The Line

Lee

I meant Noah went to the damn plains because of Wizen. Wizen mentioned Orlen/loren to Noah. I was trying to jog someone memory.

Lee

Maybe. I actually like cheese. I’m discussing Grim and little pieces of Grim’s psyche becoming stable and the negative connotations. Then I compared Audrey II (look it up) to Grim. How their greed eventually was the downfall of their caretakers.

realitiesincrease

Interesting, i hadn't seen that. Not sure though. The mention that he had access to more of Noah's memories than he would have liked to, and the fact that Grim seems to have respect for Noah, and possibly feels overfed, seem to speak against that hypothesis. But it is q disturbing character nonetheless of which we don't know the objectives so it's still possible he'll eventually turn.

Kitti Lumpo

the fact theat grim is so plagued by memes that he's making them on accident is hilarious 🤭🤭🤭 "what is this, a ceiling for ants??"

Ben Bass

TYFTC! Dang, I really love how you are filling out Grim and brining out their backstory and powers.
