Hey all! Working on the next chapters right now, but since we're a chapter or two into the Survival Exam arc and are about 400k into the story, I wanted to do a quick poll to see which arc you've all liked the most. It'll help me figure out what elements you've all been enjoying so I can make sure to have more of those in future arcs.

Cheers!

Slasher arc. A lot of attention on Noah, how his powers work and how he overcomes challenges. I've liked all of it so far, but the strength of the story is in 2 characters: Noah and Lee. Lee brings much needed comic relief.

Yeah, I had a lot of fun with the Slasher arc. Honestly it's almost 2 arcs (pre-Lee and post-Lee) but that was just splitting it up too much, hahaha. I'd say the Linwick arc was the one I had the most fun writing so far, and the training was the most 'relaxed', since I was just focusing on character development. I'm looking forward to the Survival Exam arc since so many different pieces will come into play during it. It'll either be a nightmare to write or it'll be really fun. No in between, hahahaha

If there was an all option, I'd pick that, but seeing as there isn't, I pick the beginning of the story because of how you set up the characters and then the world and runes, and one of the more unique beginnings that I've read from the countless reincarnation/Isekai/rebirth into a fantasy setting tropes. What's more, each character is well written as more than meets the eye or has the potential to be more than one note, so good on you author, and I'll keep coming back for more.

Actus

Thank you! And whoops, I probably should have had a 'equal enjoyment throughout the story' option. Oh well, hahaha. Thanks again for the support :)

Love the beginning and the travel arc to the Linwick estate. The study and learning about Runes is always exciting. Time at the school is also exciting and fun although despite a large part of the story taking place there we know almost nothing about the school, how it looks, people that work there, etc. The school is huge but as far as how anything looks...nothing really there. Vermil/Noah's rooms, Moxie's rooms, the classroom Vermil teaches in and the cannon room are about it. Where they're in relations to the gardens or each other. Where they're in relation to the shops is also a mystery. I'm not even sure how the apartments are in relation to his classroom.

I liked all of it and I liked the fact that none of these arcs dragged on too long. I don't necessarily want a retread of anything but I would like to see more of him teaching his students in regards to actual rune combos. I want to see the kids reach rank 2 and have him help them with choosing and combining runes. Honestly with the amount they already know it feels pointless to hide the sunder rune once they reach rank 2.

Actus

Yeah, I don’t plan to rehash any arcs or the like, and the Sunder stuff is coming really soon in the current arc.

Matt

I picked the slasher arc because I really enjoyed the first exam. Seeing several characters compete in a real combat situation was great, and I've loved all the combat scenes so far! Hopefully the survival exam involves some of that. I think those critical clashes are a great payoff to all the chapters we see Isabel, Todd, Emily, and "Vermil" training :D

Matt

It's honestly hard to pick. My enjoyment has grown with the story, but that doesn't mean that I just want a slice of life training novel; the balance needs to be right.

Actus

Yeah I definitely agree. I expected the of latest arc to be the least ‘favorite’ since it’s been much more chill, as I like doing things in waves. Its kind of a palate cleanser/ preparation for the upcoming arc that kicked off with contessa’s arrival at the camp.

Aertheron

Your writing is highly appreciated and I hope writing the new arc will turn out to be a lot of fun!

Sean

The slasher exam was great because it was the start of the story, but personally I really liked the Hellreaver stuff just because it was the first fight where we saw a possible threat to Noah's pseudo immortality. Instead of die, try again, die, get stronger, win, die again, etc there was an actual worry that the Hellreaver would subsume his soul or something. Idk how you would include that again, but a certain amount of stakes is always appreciated.

So far I haven't really liked one arc over another. Maybe the first is my least favorite, but my main like of this story is Noah's problem solving. His mind for magic and his relationship to team mates as well as enemies. Bending contessa to his will to help his friend was a just dessert. Its a nice mix of strength and bluffing, the willingness to do to what he does to accomplish his goal.

The most interesting parts of this story all involve the runes and how Noah can interact with them differently. The overarching plot with Renewal is good, as is the minor plot involving families and backstory. The school itself though has been lackluster to me. The exams are weird, there’s no feeling of an actual school or courses, and all the training feels repetitive. Reading fights that are only written for training get boring as they don’t have any weight to them. There’s been more of that this arc than in previous. Im not saying those fights shouldn’t happen, just that you don’t need to write them fully each time.

I think the first arc is definitely the best as it represents a challenge to be overcome ans a lack of knowledge and exploration and large amounts of character growth from everyone. Other arcs are good though I would say the current arc is probably my least favourite, not to say I dislike it but this whole arc feels like a case of severe blue balls with all the waiting and aborted encounters xD

Ben Pham

Completely agree. Very well said.

Chillitsagame

I liked all the arcs but Patreon won't let me vote 4 times 😞

First arc and Linwick estate for me, mostly cause we could really feel the pressure Noah's feeling, first by arriving into a world he knows nothing about and having to fight for his life and navigate through schemes, and later by facing people much stronger than him and having to outwit them to protect others he care about.

Mike L

imma be honest I dont care which direction u go with. I like suprises

abowden

I can't decide between the first and third arc. Leaning towards the first.

Preizy

I don't have a specific arc that is my favourite. What I enjoy the most is the rules of magic and the different combinations Noah comes up with (the anticipation has been killing me these last few chapters about what his rank 3 rune is/does)

Aclys

The school is a bit wierd yes, though I think the main reason is that it is not a school like we think of it. It's more like a building with lots of professors/teachers, each of whom takes on 1-3 students to teach personally, more or less apprentice style. There seems to be some general classes and material... but we never see a school day from the kid's perspective when they dont attend one of Noah or Moxie's lessons so we have no idea what those are like or what their usual home/coursework is like. This partly makes sense since they have been coming up on the end of year/term exams... by then students are usually supposed to have already been taught everything and its mostly a matter of making sure nothing's missing and/or polish any rough edges in their skillsets. In short, should they pass the upcoming survival exams I am expecting a somewhat hilarious arc of Noah having to organize a new year's education from scratch that actually has content and the hijinks that come from that. Possibly including him bothering and getting to know other teachers and, eventually, getting even with that bureaucratic lady who loves to make people wait for hours. As for the training fights... I dunno, some are probably skippable but it has been neat to see the students grow and learn/adapt, at least the ones before the panther made them relocate where interesting, getting the 3 students to cross class(noble vs commoner) divides and work together etc. Ultimately not every one of those fights cant be spectacular compared to the literally death defying bouts Noah himself gets into since, well, the students only get the one life. Maybe once they get some shields they can get a little more risky. But yeah, I can see the point that the school doesnt feel like much of a school so will be interesting to see if that changes after the exams.

Mack

Thanks for the detailed response!

Umut Numanoglu

The school does not make any sense for me. They are paying teachers to take apprentices, but there is no real curriculum other than being a strong fighter. It is not even an important thing for noble families if we go by the standards of Torrin family. They are heavily funded by nobles but there is sign of it in their daily life or the situation by the office lady, which while amusing would be unrealistic. What I miss is the teachers researching part, I assume it would be the thing that the school is interested most but the library or anything else was not a big help until now. I'd like to see more theorycrafting, world building etc

Aclys

Well keep in mind our only point of view so far have been from two specialty teachers... one's the tier 1 outcast who got handed a couple of blacklisted students to fill a quota or some such. The other is a somehow special noble lady in Moxie's charge who is basically there to "do whatever she likes", to be given Proper training by her own house later on. Neither of the above seem like they would be typical teachers or have typical courses they teach. We havent really seen any communal classes or the like either so its possible this school just doesnt have them. Maybe its more like an apprenticeshsip based training structure, after all the guidance of more experienced teachers would be very valuable for a junior mage, getting the big classes that share knowledge like in a classic school may simply not be possible in a world like this where everyone is hoarding the rune recepies and such?
