Yep, I'm giving my personal rankings of movies again, pretty much just because the 1980s Fantasy Movies Rankings proved popular.

Again, some rules are needed -- I'm only ranking English-language films with some speculative science element released theatrically in 1979. Unlike for the 1980s fantasy movies, there is some thought given to actual quality of the films here. I really do believe my top 2 are the actual best scifi films of 1979, and I'd feel comfortable defending my top 10 as well.

I must note; this list does not include "Unidentified Flying Oddball." I was grounded when that movie cam out, and threw a fit over missing it. My parents assured me there'd be other opportunities to see it. To this day, those opportunities have not arrived. It remains one of two films I wanted to see when they came out, but couldn't because I was grounded, that I have never managed to catch (the other being Condorman). Since I haven't seen Unidentified Flying Oddball, I cannot in good conscience rate it.

From most to least liked:

Alien

Time After Time

[The first dividing line. I consider the two films above this to be 'Great,' and those from here to the next divider only 'Really good.']

The Black Hole

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Phantasm

Mad Max

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (Yep, there was a theatrical release before the series came out.)

[Second divider, the films below this are at-best 'okay,' though I personally really did enjoy them.]

Moonraker

Thirst

Quintet

Meteor

Ravagers

[Third divider, films below this are Bad, but I still enjoy them as part of my love of bad movies.]

Clonus

Prophecy

Goldengirl

Mutation

The Brood

[Forth divider. I can't manage to enjoy the films below this without MST3K-style assistance]

C.H.O.M.P.S.

Up From The Depths

H. G. Wells' The Shape of Things to Come

The Alien Encounters

Spaced Out

The Visitor

[Fifth divider. Yeah, Bog deserves to be singled out as terrible. Shame! Shame!]

Bog

Disagree? Tell me what movies ought to be higher or lower on the list!

I saw Meteor and Alien as a double feature, by myself, as a foreign exchange student in Japan. I was pale coming out of Alien. I was stopped on the street and asked if I was well.

Condorman is my white whale. I saw it in theaters and desperately want to own it on video. Not because it's good. Oh, lord, no - not because it's good. Just... because. If I ever get a copy, I'll hook you up.
