Yep, I'm giving my personal rankings of movies again, pretty much just because my 1979 Scifi Movies Rankings, 1980s Fantasy Movies Rankings, Post-Apocalypse Movies Rankings and Ranking of Scifi Movies with "Star" in the Title have proved popular. But this time I am going to tackle movies with Marvel characters in them. Not just the MCU, but all movies that include a Marvel comics character.

As always, I'm establishing some largely-arbitrary rules on what does and doesn't qualify for this list. As an objective requirement, only movies that got English-language theatrical releases are considered (limited releases count, festival-only screenings do not, nor to unreleased films like Corman's fantastic Four or Dolph Lundgrin's Punisher). Subjectively, if a movie has a character named after a Marvel character but I do not otherwise recognize the character as being at all similar to their comic counterpart (interpretations and adaptations are fine, but I have to see SOME inkling of their namesake), I won't count it.

I'm also not doing movies based on Marvel imprints, such as Icons and Malibu, so no Men in Black or Kick-Ass.

From most to least liked:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The First Avenger

Spider-Man 2

Avengers: Endgame

Avengers

Logan

Big Hero 6

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Iron Man

Black Panther

Thor

Captain America: Civil War

The Marvels

Deadpool

[I personally see a significant drop-off of movie quality between those above and below this line. I still like the ones below this line, but there are, to me, good rather than great]

Ant-Man and the Wasp

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Spider-Man

X-Men

Ant-Man

The Punisher

Blade

Captain America: Brave New World

Iron Man 2

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Captain Marvel

Deadpool & Wolverine

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Avengers: Infinity War

Black Widow

Deadpool 2

X-Men: First Class

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (The ending Rhino scene puts this up higher than it would be otherwise)

Howard the Duck

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The Amazing Spider-Man

X2

Venom

[This is another notable movie quality gap line, for me]

Guardians of the Galaxy

Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Iron Man 3

The New Mutants

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Hulk (2003)

The Incredible Hulk (1977 - pilot of the TV show, which had a English-language theatrical release outside the US)

Return of the Incredible Hulk (as above)

[Right about here, I begin to consider these bad movies. I still enjoy a lot of them, but that's more about my fandoms than their quality]

Fantastic Four (2005)

Thor: The Dark World

Doctor Strange

Captain America (1944 Serial)

Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance (The flaming excavator gets this about 4 slots higher than it would be otherwise)

Thor: Love and Thunder

X-Men: Apocalypse

Venom: Let There Be Carnage

X-Men: The Last Stand

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Ghost Rider

[At this point, I basically have no interest in seeing any of the movies below this line ever again]

Venom: The Last Dance

Thor: Ragnarok

Dark Phoenix

The Wolverine

Daredevil

Eternals

Blade II

[The movies below this line are genuinely, and I feel objectively, bad]

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Madame Web (I am shocked how many movies I rated as worse than this one, but even after a lot of consideration, I still think it's accurate)

Blade: Trinity

Elektra

Spider-Man (1977 - pilot of the TV show, which had a English-language theatrical release outside the US)

Punisher: War Zone

Inhumans (The first 2 episodes of the series got a limited theatrical release so... they count)

Fantastic Four (2015)

Kraven The Hunter

Morbius

I am currently struggling, very hard, not to be the 643,001st person to go bankrupt from medical bills this year. And as much as I hate it, those bills have literally reduced me to begging for money. Every dollar helps.

Doctor Strange may not have been great, but most of it’s problems stemmed more from it being his origin story, rather than being a truly bad movie. Did you dock it because of some the strange casting? I would have at least put it above Return of the Incredible Hulk & Hulk (2003). It seem strange for it to be below both of those & the next level down on top of it. Conversely Shang-Chi seems to be rated much better than I would have expected. Even when you consider it has origin story problems I would say it’s at least to a whole category worse. Definitely below Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Through in general I seem to like that series more than you do. I’m not going to say that Across the Spider-Verse didn’t have problems, but below Spider-Man 3 & Venom seems just too harsh. It is setting up a couple of future movies & I think when more of the series comes out it will seem much better because it won’t leave you with the hanging feeling at the end. I will admit I am a huge Spidey fan and might be rating all those movies better than their objective quality. I would put most of them 1 or 2 steps higher, (except Across Spider-verse obviously). What I really hate about the movie, is they had scenes that were only shown in the theatrical release (one of them in only certain versions). Then they didn’t even make them available on the DVD/Blu-Ray. That particular idea needs to die a final death. When Clue did the multiple versions they at least labeled them so you find the other versions & they put all the endings on the DVD. I found Black Panther Wakanda Forever really hard to re-watch. I would lower it at least below Ant-Man if not below the Marvels. The last of the big changes I would make is to lower Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania. It was setting several things up & I think it would have been better viewed if they had actually put the rest of parts out. But it still had some real problems. I just can’t see it above Age of Ultron or X-2. I am a little surprised that Blade 2 hit the never again level. It’s bad, but I can take it as part of the fandom. Also I would put Deadpool above the Marvels & X-Men First Class above Black Widow. But I wouldn’t argue over any of those.

LOTS to say here! Some deep thought went into this, though, you can tell! I'm glad that someone else agrees with me about the Waititi helmed Thor movies. There were things I liked about them, but ultimately... yeah, didn't work for me. I have THOUGHTS (TM) about why, but I'll spare you. And DAMN but I had hope for Eternals... alas!

Owen K.C. Stephens

If you felt like going into it, I'd be interested in to hear your thoughts on Waitithor.

Carl Hess

I like your stuff, Owen! I don’t agree with all your rankings, but I appreciate that you took a stand. For whatever this is worth, my favorites are Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy, respectively. I think the Marvel movies are at their best when they don’t take themselves entirely seriously, but don’t devolve into camp either.

Owen K.C. Stephens

And there's nothing wrong with that! There's a reason I specifically call these out as my opinion, rather than an effort to convince everyone my rankings are the one truly ranking list. And I think a big part of the MCU's success is that it can offering different things to different people.

Mike Myler

Morbius truly was just irredeemably awful. Shockingly bad.

Owen K.C. Stephens

It was. I'll be honest, I did NOT expect it to be the bottom of my list. But every time I compared it to one or more other films at that end of things, it came out not just at the bottom, but WAY at the bottom.

Mike Myler

I too expected it to be better. For SOME good bit to hang onto but it never appeared. :/

Gen Giggles

The top of the list is very similar to mine. I definitely have many I haven't seen on the bottom of your list and I appreciate confirmation that I shouldn't see them.
