ShadowFinder - New General Rules Preview (Boosted Rerolls, Heroic Resolve, and Recuperate) (Patreon)
Content
I have been working on ShadowFinder, a modern-urban-fantasy play mode for Starfinder 1st edition, for more than three years. It's been badly sidetracked by societal and personal health issues, but I have never given up on it. As I slowly recover from chemoradiation treatments, I'm trying to spend a few hours a week getting back to this project.

Boosted Reroll: Some d20 reroll rules in ShadowFinder specify they allow a “booster reroll.” When you make a boosted reroll, if the result on the die is a 1-10, you add 10 to your total result. Thus, if you make a boosted reroll attack roll with a +5 attack bonus, and the d20 shows an 13 on your roll, you total is (13 + 5) 18. But if your d20 shows a 6 on your reroll, you add another +10 bonus, and your total is (6+5+10) 21.
If the result of your boosted reroll is worse than your original roll, you may choose to keep your original roll. On an attack roll or saving throw if your original roll was a natural 1, and the boosted reroll is also a natural 1, it's still an automatic failure (though if you need to know how much you failed by, you do get to add the additional +10 for rolling under an 11 on the die).
Heroic Resolve: ShadowFinders are literally people who can change the force of the Shadowblast by setting their will against it. As a result, all ShadowFinder characters (regardless of class) have access to Heroic Resolve, allowing them to expend Resolve Points to reroll failed attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks. You must decide to use Heroic Resolve after you know what your d20 roll is, but before the result of that roll is revealed by the GM. The first time you use Heroic Resolve in a game session it costs 1 Resolve Point. Each time you use it after that in the same game session it costs 1 additional Resolve Point (2 RP the second time you use it, 3 RP the third time, and so on).
A reroll with Heroic Resolve is a “boosted reroll,” as defined in this section.
Recuperate: Whenever ShadowFinder rules mention recuperating, it’s using that as a game term to describe when a character takes a 10-minute rest and expends a Resolve Point to regain Stamina Points. Thus if a typcial Starfinder ability ability says “Once you use this ability, you can’t use it again until you next takes a 10-minute rest and expends a Resolve Point to regain Stamina Points" it is the same as a ShadowFinder rule saying you can't use it again until after you next recuperate. Saying “recuperate” is just faster, and makes it clear we’re always talking about the same thing. You can recuperate even if you don’t need to recover Stamina Points, but it still takes 10 minutes and costs 1 Resolve Point.

I'm in remission from my cancer, which is great, but the bills haven't stopped just because the tumor has. Every dollar helps.
