Starfinder First Edition specifically assumes that special materials like adamantine are already used in armor construction to the greatest degree possible in each suit, so there's no need for special adamantine rules such as exist in the feudal fantasy version of the game. But some people adore having options, including fantasy terms having game mechanical effects in science-fantasy games. And, I admit, I am one of those people.

So, I'm doing special armor materials for Starfinder First Edition. Links to all my Starfinder special materials for armor articles (which is up to five, at time of writing) can be found, along with links to many other Starfinder entries, at the Paying-Patreon Exclusive Starfinder First Edition Index.

Special Armor Materials

Armor made of special materials can only be made of ONE special material. You can't have your armor benefit from being made of both adamantine and mithral, though legends claim there was once a special material that acted as both, called dragonsteel...

Special Armor Material: Druchite

Druchite armor replaces most of the materials normally used in the armor's construction with the shadow infused black-and-violet ore found only on the Plane of Shadow. Such armor is harder to see in dim light and darkness, even for creatures with low-light vision and darkvision.

Price is increased by +10%

Druchite just looks like a dark metal in normal or bright light, but when in dim light or no light, it draws on the planar shadow energy native to its existence and wraps itself in preternatural shadow even against forms of vision not dependent on photonic illumination.

Light sources built into druchite armor, or created by items wielded by a creature in druchite armor produce light levels on step lower than normal. If the light source already only produces dim light, it instead only illuminates to have the light's normal range.

Any armor upgrade or property that adds a bonus to the Stealth check for a wearer of a suit of druchite armor has that bonus increases by +1 (+2 if the armor is item level 8 or more, and +3 if it is item level 16 or more).

Darkvision and low-light vision treat a creature in druchite armor the same way normal vision treats such creatures in dim light or no light -- use the dim light or no light rules without adjusting them for darkvision or low-light vision. This has no impact on any other sense (see in darkness treats druchite armor normally, for example).

(Powerful self-willed undead forces often come from worlds with easy access to druchite, but such forces also just enjoy the benefits of increased stealth against those with darkvision. Art by grandeduc.)
