Drakons

Drakons are a sub-species of dragons, similar in many ways to wyverns and drakes, but generally larger, smarter, and more powerful than other lesser dragons. Unlike true dragons, drakons are not innate spellcasters and are flightless, lacking wings. This often causes them to be called "serpents," such as "Swamp Serpents" or "River Serpents." Drakons grow to full size and maturity very quickly, generally within two years, and can live for 2-3 centuries, but never reach the heights of power of ancient true dragons.

Drakons are closely tied to a specific concept or power, often related to their natural territory. That related power gives drakons revelations similar to those of oracles (and using their HD as their effective oracle level for the power of such revelations). A drakon's stat block lists both the mystery its revelation or revelations come from, and one or more specific revelations. However, like feats, the listed revelations are just typical examples--individual drakons of the same species might well have different revelations from the same mystery.

All drakons written to-date are listed on the Paying-Patron-Exclusive Pathfinder Monster-Article Index. Free members can click on the Drakon tag to find the Iron Drakon, Lava Dragon, Mire Drakon, Moon Drakon, and Rock Drakon. While there is also a CR 20 War Drakon, it's available for paying members only.

(A sea drakon taking an aggressive underwater posture. Art by Петр Костюк.)

Sea drakons are creatures of the deepest, coldest depths of the oceans, though some prefer to operate in shallower arctic seas during long winter nights. Sea drakons are not vulnerable to hot waters or night light, however, and operate in the freezing dark as a matter of preference and comfort, not necessity. Among the more powerful of the non-true-dragon forms of dragonkind, sea drakon see themselves as elemental forces, apart and better than their scaly cousins.

Sea drakons have a form of possessiveness different from being classically territorial. They instead lay claim to weather, currents, and light conditions. A sea drakon enjoying a blizzard at sea is angered by any other creature able to weather the same storm. A sea drakon at the bottom of an ocean is angered by creatures better able to perceive at the lightless depths. When sea drakons form a squall or tempest grouping, it is because they wish to establish their superior mastery over some specific long-lasting environmental condition and are willing to work together to do so.

Sea drakons are particularly insulted by any other draconic creature showing mastery of the environment the drakons have claimed. Sea drakons hate, hunt, and eat dragon turtles, sea drakes, and tidepool dragons. They fear and loathe linnorms of all types, and the existence of a powerful linnorm in an area is a common reason for sea drakons to form groups. Brine and black dragons think of sea drakons as dumb brutes, but rarely actually have enough interest in the same things to cause conflicts.

Oddly, Cetuses get along well with sea drakons and often end up as slow-witted enforcers for the drakons. White dragons, especially younger ones, sometimes forge alliances with sea drakons, with the dragon claiming the land and air of an arctic region and the drakon the rivers and seas.

Fun slap… this may be a spelling error or I forgot what it was originally but it’s fun. I’m gonna go with it.
