As I run my Gatekeepers campaign for PF2, the player running a ranger with a bear companion ("Brogue," who is beloved by the team) and I are learning the Companion rules together.

Sometimes, we both think there ought to be an option to expand the existing options, such as with a feat.

Here are some of those feats.

Accinge          [Feat 1][Druid][Ranger]Prerequisite An animal companionYou can use Command an Animal to command your companion to take the Ready action. You set the terms of the Ready. If your animal companion takes the Ready action, they gain a reaction that can only be used for that ready.

Heel          [Feat 1][Druid][Ranger] Prerequisite An animal companionYou can use Command an Animal to command your companion to stay near you. The animal can take up to 2 actions each round, but only to Leap and Stride, and only to move closer to you. Your companion continues to gain these 2 actions each round until you use the Command an Animal action again, and it cannot take any other actions on a round when it has already used actions from Heel.

I have questions, and I'm most likely going to make an ass of myself because I haven't read "the book" since I ran the playtest... * This looks really expensive as far as character resources go. Even though most characters get more feats now than in PF1, two feats for something that was part of a skill in the previous edition is, as I said expensive. On the other hand, could these apply to familiars too? * My only excuse for not reading the book(s) yet is that I'm 50 years old and I am going back to college full-time with nothing but dwindling financial aid to support myself and I will run out of that in 3 quarters so I'm a little stressed about the ticking clock and need to be focused on that thing. ** References would be kind if anyone could point me in the right direction. *** Be kind, rewind.

Animal companions have an entirely different action economy and cost-benefit analysis in PF2 than they did in PF2. They have played out as game-mechanically balanced so far when run RAW in my Gatekeepers game, but these two things are currently things you can't do. Because it's just annoying for the player to have these tactics off-the-board, but the creatures are currently balanced, feats seem the way to go to add new options. PF2 and PF1 are so radically different in terms of balance, comparing them in discrete examples is rarely an apples-to-apples endeavor.

I haven't read the errata just released so I may still be totally off. For the first feat Ready is a basic action and so would be covered by the Nature skill feat Train Animal, however I'm still not sure how to classify the second as an action unless to homebrew it as a specialty basic action which would then also allow it to be covered by the same feat, Train Animal. The first would require seven days training on a successful check and the second would require two seven day training sessions. But I could still be missing things here, so I would love to hear how you got to where you're at in your game. Thanks Owen
