Yesterday I gave a preview of Njor culture for a fantasy setting. One of the things I often like to do to explore the attitude and tone of a culture is to write up some words of wisdom common among them. Here are twenty-one common Njor idioms.

Well crafted, well kept, serves well.

Honor is the gift you give yourself.

Gold is gold. Coin is coin. Grain is food.

Once fired, an arrow has no provenance.

Better a broken shield than a broken arm.

Fire is the heart of civilization, and fire burns.

Railing against the storm does not stop the snow.

The friendless and faithless are not always clanless.

Yesterday brought today, today will bring tomorrow.

A full larder is better than the memory of a day of rest.

A starving town does not ask from where came a feast.

The dead do not always lie easy, and their ears are long.

You can clean spilled blood, but not the memory and pain of spilling it.

The cleverest fox is still a poor wolf, the strongest wolf is still a poor fox.

Respect your elders. They have survived that which you have not yet faced.

What is written is no more than what is remembered, colored by what is desired.

A fat wolf is less dangerous than a lean one, but it remains unwise to feed wolves.

Once your tongue is known to speak falsehoods, even speaking the truth does not earn you trust.

A good dog has far more uses than a good husband. A bad dog is still better than a bad husband.

It is best not to invite a foe into your house, but if you must, remember they are your guest until you cast them out.

Those who mistreat others must never show the slightest weakness, or the treatment shall be returned to them twelvefold.

SupportA number of folks have asked about helping me cover my medical expenses as I recover from my pulmonary embolism, and prepare to battle my cancer. While I'll do a GoFundMe if I absolutely have to, and expect there to be more product bundles to raise funds come April, the main way to support me right now is to increase your pledge level here at my Patreon, or make a direct contribution at my Ko-Fi.
