Made another attempt at working with grayscale values first and applying color on top.

I'm thinking it would be nice to have a more consistent palette. So I was experimenting with a workflow to use a value painting and then apply colors from a curated palette.

But I don't think I could make it work. Fun to try out things anyway, but colored grayscale always has that old timey colored photo feel.
