Link doesn't work. I subscribed for the full length Buffy reactions, but they don't seem to work.

Tabatha Cat

Never mind! I found the link to previous reactions. :)

Patrick Armbruster

Wow. Gracie. Full points for Gracie's predictions and tippy-tappies. :)

L R

Your predictions kill me , you're not ready girl !!!

Superfan Giovanni

Giles unspoken reactions to Xander's throwaway comments and joke tags is evolving nicely, I forgot how much I loved it.

UTU49

Damn, it vastly improves your day whenever any of your favourite reactors uploads a show you love. I'm so excited... and I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control... and I think I like it. Whoo hoo!

Patrick Armbruster

In some ways, this Xander "love interest monster" went much better than the last one. I think Buffy's right near the end: The mummy actually liked him.

Dave Ford

Dumb to like this episode? No - what are you saying? it has ESKIMO WILLOW.. It's the cutest thing in the world. But, damn, such a shame you worked out already that Oz is the big bad of the season.

Cole Crouse

Alley: It’s called Inca Mummy Girl. Museum Guide: Incan Burial Exhibit. Alley:*Points Excitedly* The title!

Colleen Elizabeth

I agree with you, this is a good episode. It's definitely a monster of the week ep, but not a total throw away like a couple of the monster of the week eps in season 1; there's really good character development and the mummy is a compelling villain because she's not truly evil.

Dave Ford

"kiss him! kiss him!" 35:00 the shoe drops "No! Don't kiss!!"

Ed Badalucca

Ok, well I just aged about 15 years when you saw Seth Green and didn't immediately go "OMG, Seth Green!" He factors into too much good stuff from my young adulthood: from Austin Powers, Can't Hardly Wait and Idle Hands, to his voice work in Family Guy, Robot Chicken, the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series... And fun fact! He was cast as a vampire extra in the original Buffy movie in 1992, but was largely cut from the final film!

TheLoungingPotato

The casual racism and ignorance keeps me from rewatching this episode more often but it has a lot of really great moments tbh. But also a lot of “Xander is annoying af” moments. But Willow in her costume? Adorable. 10/10. Looks snug

Kitty

I'm so happy you liked this one as a lot of people don't. I think it has some good moments, the best being the intro of Oz.

DB

Here for Seth Green/Oz! My fun fact for this (really forgettable, imo sorry!) episode is that it was inspired by a rl story of Lady of Ampato - a mummy of a teen Inca girl sacrificed to the gods and discovered in the 90s in Mount Ampato, Peru (lol thank you wiki for making me sound like I know details of archaeological discoveries from my teen years)

Alley Box
>>38264233

im such a clueless millennial 😭 and omg thats so cool! he was like “okay, im back to claim my spot”

DB

Oh and talking about small world Seth and Aly played a couple (or well 2 tiny tweens going on a date lol) about 10 years before the show in My Stepmother is an Alien which i loved as a kid and watched too many times. When you watch it as an adult turns out the film is actually completely bananas but I do have a soft spot for it!

Lindsey Metcalfe

My favorite thing is that you forgot her name and it's literally one consonant sound away from "Impala". #fakespnfan lol (kidding)

Lindsey Metcalfe
>>38264657

Seriously, the number of different configurations that various Buffy actors have acted together in other stuff is bonkers. I've been debating if I should ask Alley to react to Dollhouse next now or wait until she's at least closer to the end of both Buffy and Angel...

Sean

It's funny that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Seth Green costarred in Scooby Doo; Buffy and her support squad of friends are called the Scoobies.

KT

I enjoy this episode mostly for the actress that plays Impata and Seth Green's appearance. And the introduction of Giles' car. The cultural appropriation dance, Xander's slow-talking when Impata clearly speaks perfect english, and everyone assuming a modern Peruvian teenager can translate 500 year old languages from "her region" is... a lot.

DB
>>38264657

I was hoping she'd do Firefly post Buffyverse actually, only because I actually never got into Dollhouse (I'm gonna hide now in shame lol)

DB
>>38263787

Ahhh don't spoil that to her! At least she doesn't know he's secretly feeding on babies!

Lindsey Metcalfe
>>38264970

It's bananas to me that this show (the series, not just this episode) was genuinely really progressive at the time it aired in terms of how we viewed that sort of thing, as well as the feminist aspects. As screwed up as things still are, it does at least highlight that we've made considerable progress in the past 20 years.

DB
>>38264512

Yep, that's where they took her name from as well - Ampata (tho I enjoyed your name suggestions much better haha)

Miricat

Sometimes the monster-of-the-week episodes are the best - they have more time to explore the characters. Was the same way with X-files. The main story is good, but it's great to get a break. Oh, and to remember Empada's name, just think of those Spanish hot pockets - empanada

Lindsey Metcalfe
>>38264657

*shrug* I never got into Firefly, so I think we're even lol. You're into what you're into, no shame in that

Koz

This one is fun, which is usually true of things involving mummies. I can’t help but like that you responded better to this one than you did to “School Hard.” 🙌 I like you!

Lindsey Metcalfe
>>38262463

I re-watched ahead of her to remind myself of the whole season because I usually cherry-pick eps in my rewatches until I get to about s4 and I forgot how wild the first few seasons are as a whole when you watch straight through.

Patrick Armbruster
>>38264657

I don't care which comes first, but both Firefly and Dollhouse certainly need Alley's reactions. :) ... How one can't get into Firefly, I'll never understand. Dollhouse can actually be hard to get into without pre-existing knowledge, because the concept makes it hard to see character development in the first few episodes. I have to rewatch that as soon as my current Buffy/Angel binge is through. :)

Valkyrie

Oh god THIS episode lmao. Honestly I think it is one of the better campy monster of the week episodes. Also that ancient mummy is one major cutie am I right boys? She could suck the life out of me ANY day. :)

Tim Pierce

Fun, stomach churning fact, Nicholas Brendon and Ara Celi had to do that Twinkie scene about ten times.

DB
>>38264657

I'm not exactly a Whedon completist tbh I vaguely remember watching half of S1 of Dollhouse and (this mostly shocks ppl) i haven't seen a single Avengers movie... But i did love Dr Horrible and Much Ado About Nothing. Oh and In Your Eyes. Loved that one a lot!

Moon Logic

Seth Green and SMG are close friends from before Buffy. Willow saying that she hasn't made up her mind yet is one of my favourite moments of her. It's such a great joke and also a character moment and quite relatable. I think Buffy saying Xander looks nice seems sisterly, almost motherly. She's obviously not jealous. If she's that comfortable about him going on a date, he should know that his chances with her aren't great.

Lindsey Metcalfe
>>38264657

I'm pretty hit-or miss on Whedon as well. I'm a little iffy about his MCU work and I honestly can't remember if I've ever actually watch Dr Horrible or Much Ado. I probably should at some point.

Valkyrie
>>38265815

I used bois as a gender neutral term dw my dude im not one of the BOIS either ;)))). happy pride month.

Patrick Lyke

LOL I totally love your reactions - you are so upbeat! :) Also fun fact, Seth Green also created a show called Robot Chicken and SMG shows up in there as well :)

Sean
>>38264964

Yeah, I think they start using the name later, but we all know they're the Scoobies.

Nikolai5

Just the same as any of other job, it's not what you know, it's who you know. Actors get their friends parts in things all the time.

SpikesEcho

"So Where's the Dead Bitch..." the unofficial title of this episode 🤣🤣 Don't underestimate Twinkies around the world! I'm given Twinkies in Egypt more than I ever see them consumed state-side lol

Pockets

"God's gift to the bell curve" has gotta be one of my favourite one-liners in the show

UTU49
>>38264657

DB: "i haven't seen a single Avengers movie... " That is COMPLETELY insane. That's like never having seen a single episode of Friends or the Simpsons. That’s okay though. They’re just movies and TV shows.

UTU49
>>38264731

Do you have nametags in all your clothes so you won't forget who you are? (I'm having one of those days where I can't tell if my teasing is too mean or not.)

UTU49
>>38264964

"So that'd be a spoiler, albeit an allowable-one." I agree. It would be next to impossible for us to try to stop ourselves and each other from using the term "Scoobies". That's just who they are to us. Plus it's not a plot point. It's just a label. When exactly a viewer becomes aware of that particular label... that hardly matters.

Rock and Roll Joe

Observations: 1.Alley dancing to the Buffy opening is total mood 2. Oz! 3. I think Xander broke Alley when he asked Ampata if she was a preying mantis 4. Xander's costume (and he even kinda mentioned it) was a reference to Clint Eastwood Spaghetti westerns, where they filmed in Italy and had Italians play Mexicans because it was cheaper. 5. Cordelia was at her worst in this episode in a lot of ways. 6. There a few things here that I will point out in the future (no spoilers) Anyways, thank you for the post and I am really enjoying watching this with you reacting. I had watched Buffy so many times before that I had actually stopped watching it due to effectively having it memorized, you are making it new again for me and I love it.

Ed Badalucca

"What he lacks in smarts, he makes up for in lack of smarts." Where was this line when I was in High School???

UTU49

This is an unpopular episode, but I've always really liked this one. Somehow they made a monster of the week story that doubles as a sweet romance... involving the monster of the week! I can't for the life of me understand how this show gets away with this kind of malarkey. So... a murderous mummy has a sweet romance with one of the main characters? There is NO WAY that should be satisfying to watch! lol.

Arnold Kim

Some say this is one of the worst episodes of the show, but I never really got that. It’s a monster of the week, but she’s not really a monster- she’s just a girl who was a victim of a very unfortunate situation, and she had to kill in order to survive- I never got the impression that she enjoyed it like the vampires and other monsters seem to. I liked the parallels between Buffy’s life and Ampata’s. And I always liked the seeds sprinkled here for a possible Oz /Willow connection.

FernWithy

I'm not a fan of the episode, but not necessarily for its premise. I just thought the Buffy-Ampata parallels were a little on the nose, leading to some clunky dialogue, and the romance just... two days and we get "I'm in love"? Eh. The idea was good, though, and there are a lot of fun little elements in it. Oz liking Willow in the eskimo costume is classic. In fact, Oz's opening scene is pretty cool.

zerofk

I like this episode (despite it indeed having some problematic race issues). Most of the reasons have already been said by Alley or in the comments, so I'll just add one more: the interactions of Giles and Buffy in this episode are some of the best we've seen so far.

Shandler

Glad you enjoyed this episode - I think I also enjoy it a lot more than most Buffy fans tend to. It's not earth shatteringly good, but it's a really fun monster of the week episode. The song you wanted to check out on Spotify is "Shadow" by Four Star Mary, and the second song the band plays is called "Fate".

Leenis

prying mantis girl. Inca mummy girl. Poor Xander. lol He should put more ice cream on Willow's nose.

Kelly Walker
>>38264964

If I remember correctly, I think the fans were regularly calling them the Scooby gang and Scoobies before it found its way into the show anyway.

The Movie Guru

Sunnydale doesn't have money in the budget for things like glass cases and barriers in museums, or even security guards for that matter. All of the tax payer money goes to repairs from the latest "gang on PCP" rampage. Also, yes, glad that Oz got introduced, but are all of you other fans glossing over the other character introduction 😉? And Alley, when you straight up amine fall over, I just about die, it's hilarious.

UTU49
>>38271815

Ice cream on Willow's nose may well be the answer to most of the world's problems.

Kelly Walker

I love watching you instantly fall into new ships! Seriously it is the best! And the fact that you excitedly figured out who Oz was talking about right before he even said it. I wasn’t looking forward to watching this one, but I liked it more than I thought I would, problematic stuff aside. It added some interesting complexities to the monster of the week with her having had this done to her and wishing for a normal life that was impossible.

UTU49
>>38264964

Oh, did that label actually come from the fans, and then get used by the show? That would be cool.

Todd Bell

You keep apologizing for things that, when I get around to watching an episode, never actually matter at all. Your dog is a good boy, the spike episode was totally fine, and I'm sure the echo will be, too. I appreciate the effort and perfectionism, but, it's all good. :)

AlyAdmirer

Let's also remember Seth and Alyson did a movie together when they were kids. :-)

ModernArtery .

!!! I want to watch this reaction right now but I have stinky homework due at midnight :( I definitely will be putting this on at 12:01 tho!

Superfan Giovanni

Hanging a blanket is a great temporary solution for eliminating or greatly reducing a room echo

Moon Logic
>>38266102

They also did a television episode together, but Seth and Sarah seem to have an especially close bond. She's been very involved with Robot Chicken.

Pam Nail
>>38273095

Jonathan! (His name isn't mentioned in the dialogue, but he's credited as Jonathan in the end credits, so it's not a spoiler.) I was sure he'd shown up before, back in the first season, but nope.

Pam Nail

Oh gosh, I never even noticed the bodyguard guy was Billy from Twilight! I knew that face looked familiar! I enjoy this episode, even though it has some seriously yikes cultural appropriation stuff (it's the "but where are you FROOMMMMM" of episodes). I think Xander and "Ampata" are actually pretty cute together, and it's nice to see him with someone who seems to genuinely like him. And Oz wins me over immediately by being so immediately smitten with Willow (whose Eskimo costume is AMAZING).

The Movie Guru
>>38273095

I want sure that he was credited by name, so I didn't want to mention. He's one of my favorites.

Richard Lucas
>>38269730

This episode is hard for me because of the death of the young man. Imagine his parents finding he died in the US while being a foreign exchange student. A lot of the innocent deaths in this show hit me too hard but this is one of the worst. I wish they had made it so everyone she drained revived when she died. I still try to head canon that.

ModernArtery .
>>38263787

Hey so it's probably not a good idea to do the whole "joke spoiler" thing, because Alley doesn't know what's going to happen, and so therefore is not in on the joke -- and by revealing "joke" spoilers, you are in fact revealing information about future plotlines, in terms of what will or won't happen. I think it's best to just keep discussion focused on things that Alley has already learned. Once the fans who have seen the whole show start using Alley's comment box as a platform to talk to each other about the show, it becomes pretty much inevitable that they're going to start hinting at stuff in future episodes -- stuff like "I'm not gonna say what happens but we all know what character I'm talking about and what crazy thing happens", stuff like that is just needless and tbh selfish. Even stuff like "I love this episode cause it's the first time we see X character" -- congrats, now you've revealed whether or not the character you're referring to comes back in later episodes or not. There's just literally no reason for any of it. We're here to share in Alley's experience watching the show for the first time -- we don't need the constant "wink wink nudge nudge" from the audience setting expectations, and "cleverly" dancing around spoilers with hints that are rarely as subtle as the people typing them seem to think

KT
>>38270231

Yeah I explain it away by her being 500 years old but also 16, falling in love after a couple of flirtatious interactions seems like something someone with that experience would do.

TaraFromTerra

I personally love that you love the monster of the week episodes. They're some of my favorites and have unnecessarily gotten flack over the years. Also: OZ!

Rockworm

At least someone liked this episode. I can't stand it. Too much casual racism here. From Xander and Cordelia hell everyone exhibits racism in some capacity in this episode. Xander doing all the Mexican stereotype voices and Cordy with Sven complaining that he doesn't speak English while she's barking orders acting like someone from a different country is a moron. I do like the part where he mocked her "Is Cordelia even from this country?" The whole gang just assumes Impata can translate the seal because she's from south america. Hey everyone from there knows Inca text from an ancient seal right? Speaking of Impata my suspension of disbelief can't buy that she would find Xander's stupid jokes this episode the slightest bit charming. Everything that comes out of his mouth this episode annoys me to no end yet this girl falls in love with him. You know when their in Buffy's kitchen and Xander is all "where did you go" he says slowly and completely being condescending to her yet she's liking it? Meanwhile she's speaking perfect English and no one says "Xander can you please stop being an idiot for one second" I'm rambling but i have a lot to say about this episode. I can't stand it and in fact think its the worst of the entire series.

Rockworm

Some Seth Green info for ya. Scooby Doo and Buffy isn't the only thing he's done with Sarah Michelle Gellar. They did a commercial way back in 1985 when they were little kids. They've been childhood friends ever since. Also its telling his character is showing interest with Willow as he did a movie in 1988 with Willow's actress Alyson Hannigon called My Stepmother is an Alien where they dated.

DB
>>38264657

Which reminds me... I don't think I've ever seen a full episode of the Simpsons lol Re Avengers it's just that I was never into traditional superheroes and I grew up in environment where comics were not a big thing culturally speaking. I think the only comics I read back in the day were Asterix... It's odd because I grew up with a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, and they're both genres that are omnipresent in comic books, and yet it completely skipped my interest. But I'm never saying never - maybe one day I'll get into it :)

Ged Kelly

Please use my Patreon contribution this month to buy Gracie some treats. I firmly believe that dog feets on a hard floor is the happiest sound in the world, and I loved her clickyclacking all over your opening dialogue. As for the episode, I agree with you - the fandom generally hates it but I was always rather charmed by it - it's nice to have one episode where Xander isn't just a clown. Also some important character debuts in this one (yes, plural) but I'll say no more on that for now. i just hope you're making notes as we go!

Kenny Teeology
>>38293364

I don't know - I've visited Ecuador and my brother-in-law's family seemed to be educated in Incan culture and the surrounding sites. It wouldn't be inappropriate to ask them if they were familiar with the Incan symbology. Sven is not from a different race and exists in this episode just to show the weaknesses in Cordelia's character. I'm not a woman but I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to find Xander attractive and charming, especially since Impata desperately wants to belong in this foreign land and time. I'm sure that Impata could sense that Xander was into her and didn't mean to mock her.

Brandon Scott

Great video... Yeah, just wanted to point out that you'll notice a sort of pattern throughout the seasons in the numbered eps. For instance, watch out for episode sevens (*hint)... Also, you're a millennial? I didn't think you were born during that period.

Glad you enjoyed this one, as it is often ranked one of the worst episodes. If you like this, you are going to be blown away by the rest of season two!

Rock and Roll Joe
>>38293364

Xander isn't mocking Mexican culture here, this is a reference joke and even after Xander spells it out you missed it. I might have the exact words off here but it's pretty close: Buffy, "What are you supposed to be?" Xander, "Mexican. Or rather, an Italian pretending to be a Mexican in a fictional Montana town." This is very clearly a reference to the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns such as, "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly." He is even dressed similar to Eastwood's character. Spaghetti Westerns were a particularly B-Movie sub-genre of the traditional Western. In order to film at a fraction of cost of filming in Hollywood or on location, they instead filmed the movies in Italy and had Italians all playing the roles of Mexicans.

Rockworm
>>38293364

Rock and Roll Joe I am literally talking about everything else Xander says in this episode and not in that specific moment. You chose the one moment when Xander isn't being completely offensive the entire episode and a moment I didn't even mention to act like I don't know what I'm talking about.

Rachael
>>38293364

I agree, Rockworm, I can't stand this episode for the same reasons, plus referring to South America the way so many shows refer to Africa as if it's a country and not a continent. Ugh.

Nikolai5

The monster of the week episodes tend to contain a nice amount of progression to the characters relationships and what not as well as whatever is going on. So there is always something that will carry on story wise in these episodes even if it's not the main arc. Sometimes even things that turn into big story arcs later on. While they are obvious what kinds of episodes are what they shouldn't be dismissed. Unlike in X-Files where there are some episodes that offer literally nothing and they act like they've had a mind wipe by the next episode.

Damon Pearcy

You crazy young folks. It sad state of my age that I have to keep Urban Dictionary as a favorite link to keep up with your lingos. Had to look up “hontea” and many other terms since finding your YouTube Buffy videos. I am getting to old to keep up.

Kirby
>>38264964

Fans called Buffy and her friends the Scoobies before it was used in the show. However, there were references to Scooby Doo in season one. Willow wore a Scooby Do T-shirt in Out of Mind, Out of Sight. In the same episode, Xander says "Can you say 'Gulp'?", which is a pop culture reference to Scooby Doo.

Damon Pearcy
>>38430762

I was 24 when Buffy came out the first time. I remember my sister, RIP, played the theme song of the spin off show Angel with her cello. I miss her

L R

The monster of the week episodes are good though some contribute to the overall arc more than others but they are great for character development and even the worse ones have some of the best lines . The pace of the season once you've finished and can look back is perfect big episode then a couple of episodes to let you catch your breath then another couple of big episodes . The big episodes though in Buffy are epic so watch out .

UTU49
>>38263787

Yeah. ModernArtery, I have to agree with this. I absolutely LOVE to give reactors fake spoilers, but I try to limit myself to little or none these days. If you are watching a show with your friend and you give them fake spoilers, that's just funny, because you are just one person and your jokes could only ever affect the two of you and no one else. With reactors, though they have dozens or hundreds of viewers, so every time you post a tiny spoiler it isn't actually "just one little spoiler" -- you are actually contributing to a collection of dozens of examples of "just one little spoiler". Fake spoilers are tons of fun, but I think they are problematic in where they can lead.
