I’m taking a short break from storyboarding Bun Hunting 3 today to do some studying.

Whenever I feel burnt out or lost (like right now, XD), I go back to the legendary Chuck Jones cartoons I loved growing up. This video essay is in my personal Top 5 because it perfectly breaks down what makes a cartoon truly funny: focusing on what the characters want, and the rules of what they should and shouldn't do.

It's exactly the reminder I needed.

While I know who Hank and Billy are in my head, I never properly wrote it down and often get lost and focus on the wrong things like the technical details or gags that don't actually serve the story.

My notes on Hank and Billy

This short, simple video never fails to remind me what I'm actually doing, and how to make it great! 💪

Hank: Writing is for losers who can’t remember stuff. Like... uh... what did I just say?

Chuck Jones - The Evolution of an Artist

If you grew up watching Looney Tunes, then you know Chuck Jones, one of all-time masters of visual comedy. Normally I would talk about his ingenious framing and timing, but not today. Instead, I’d like to explore the evolution of his sensibilities as an artist. To see the names of the films, press the CC button and select “Movie Titles.” This video also had a wonderful animation consultant: Taylor Ramos (http://taylorkramos.tumblr.com/) For educational purposes only. I'd never thought of the 'minimalist' aspect of Chuck Jones' cartoons until I saw this, but it makes perfect sense. Finding the 'essence' of a character and working around that. (Like a magic helmet and an opera!)

Piti Yindee

And in our head Looney Tunes cartoons always fast paced with all the loud, chaotic booming energy. Yet when we revisiting them, they mostly calm and quiet! Genius!

Maybe it's time to highlight your strengths, (drawing), and get help for the parts you struggle with? (Like maybe the plot writing wears you out?)

Piti Yindee

Yup! I always ask my friends for help with that lol XD

TJ Kahn

So what's the biggest challenges right now? How can we support or encourage you?

Piti Yindee

You guys already are by giving me strength and encouragement here everyday! I just need a day off to fulfill the juice thats all 💕

(Pauses, looks at the camera, blink blink) Is that... warm carrot juice? :D

Chuck Jones was always my favorite Looney Tunes animator, most of his stuff is excellent.

Orion-Sunset

They are true, timeless classics. 90 years from now, they will *still* be loved. ☺️

Piti Yindee

Can't believe watching cartoons gonna be part of my work!

Picori Kirby

Really? Thats awesome! ✨ Have a good time.

ARealNebula

Y'know, honestly, Hank isn't actually that far off with his thinking. "I will use my massive manly muscles and scary teeth to catch Billy Buns!" Cuz like, I meeeaaaannnn... He's right? In a way? Those manly muscles and scary teeth *are* what's caught Billy, or at least, his interest. So basically, Expectation first... And then Subversion with the unexpected Reality. 😂

El Taller de Pedro

He was and is such an inspiration for so many artist and animators. I love how simple and minimalistic his expressions were, but they were charged with a lot of emotion. He was brilliant and a great comedian.

Piti Yindee

And we love yo see our big had get foiled huhuhu

Piti Yindee

The master of timing! With most of his cartoon are move so little but make so much impacts 💕
