Okay look, I know what you're thinking. Why is the James Bond podcast reviewing the sequel to the classic Jukebox musical Mamma Mia? The answer to this is largely because Alice and I are in constant competition to think of the most spurious possible link as an excuse to do an episode.

Check this one out: It has got Pierce Brosnan in it. Thank you*WEB DESIGN ALERT* Tom Allen is a friend of the show (and the designer behind our website). If you need web design help, reach out to him here:  https://www.tomallen.media/

Listening to them saying there are no gays in the experience machine. They Don't Know Colin Firth's Character is Canonically Gay. As in he ended the first movie dancing half naked with his Greek boy toy.

Addelaide Harper

listened to this after Q&A 10, total whiplash seeing how far along abby has come in her voice training

I’m very tickled by the image of the writers of Mamma Mia Two Here We Go Again desperately scouring mid twentieth century history for a conflict that fits the parameters of the song and in which Cher could conceivably have taken part.

thejackalope231

been refreshing the page all afternoon for this episode, let's go babyyyyyyyy

Aletheia

Thank you for this gift

Another to put in the Pierce Pile before moving into the Craig Continuum is the 1988 low budget marvel Taffin. Pierce seems to have traveled through time and stolen Devon's hair style. And for Abigail, there is the tall blonde Alison Doody. As for the Bond connection, not only is Pierce practicing his quips, but Alison Doody was the Nazi who shagged both Sean Connery and is grave robbing son in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade This movie may just be too terrible to dedicate an entire episode to, but it is good for anyone looking for cheesy movie night

Jonathan Smith

I think you said none of you had seen the original movie so it’s moderately important for me to let you know at the end of that one they explicitly establish that Colin Firth’s character is gay and barebacking with Meryl Streep is his one experience of compulsory heterosexuality

DK Jones

Thank you for this. I'm burying my grandma today and needed something to bring me joy

I watched this movie in the theatre with a boy I use to work with. My closeted ass was too scared to tell him I was lesbian, but I did explicitly tell him, multiple times, that this was a platonic friendly hang-out. He then proceeded to tell all of our co-workers that he went out on a date with me, and I had to have a few awkward conversations with people where I was too scared to say I was gay, but still somehow had to make it explicitly clear I didn't like this boy. Ended up never coming out to anyone at work, and the guy quit a month or two later, thank god

You three aren't the 'three dads', you're 'three wine-drunk aunts'

Ice-Chewing Empath

what exactly does Alice say at 41:42? I have not heard that second word before and I am but a simple, blonde American bimbo

Claudia

sometimes three dads can be three wine-drunk aunts

This is the Endtimes

As a self-destructive dumbass, going for that strong feeling that brings me joy without heed for the consequences has made me mostly miserable. Being careful and boring has not brought me any great happiness either, but it has helped me dodge some spectacular trainwrecks.

Bryce Connor

I am once again asking you to do the early 90s Robert Redford joint Sneakers for a bonus. Amazing ensemble cast, killer score, and a really interesting early-information age take on espionage, cryptography, and post cold war intrigue. It's a phenomenal movie and I think you all would like it, and it would fit the subject matter of the pod!

Alfred Lang

22:23 oooor is it diagetic and this is just normal in this world and the same thing is happening in every pub bar and house across the world and it has been for so long its been normalized to the point where it is expected socially that when a man attacks you with a baguette that it is a social faux pass not to return it in kind? ... i mean if nothing else it would make the world much more interesting .. and also probably reduce wars ... as it very hard to sing, dance and shoot at the same time

Alfred Lang

55:08...OMG ... this...this explains so much.... so which one of you has webbed feet ?

Erik Rådman

"a super hero with the power to create musical numbers" - are you familiar with the episode of classic cartoon Batman: the Brave and the Bold, "Mayhem of the Music Meister"?

Ignatius

and the inverse "a villain with the power to create musical numbers" is the plot of that one Buffy musical episode

Jeremy

Nice episode, but you actually missed a microscopic amount of gayness! Colin Firth's character gets together with a guy in the end of the last movie, and there's a post credit scene where the sassy border guard sings take a chance to me after young Colin goes past. Though that scene is kind of played as a 4th wall joke.

George Barker

Will there be a discussion of the Alex Rider vs CHERUB dichotomy?

Meonlights

As someone who loves rewatching the first movie (it's fun it's free of any big dark shit it's just a happy lil booze party)... the whole young-colin-firth bit retcons the way we learn about when she had sex with him in the first movie because she drove to the same lil island for the three nights of passion when she got knocked up lol.

Hazel Smith

Literally finally subscribed to the Patreon specifically because you were doing this movie, absolutely worth it - side note, it is my personal belief that Tanya is the true sire pre-srs and this film is way gayer than it lets on

Reece Lawrence

As the foremost Pierce Brosnan scholars, it's important to me that you learn how he ended up in the first Mamma Mia, despite not being able to sing. Apparently, his father had just died, and his agent sent him the script, and by sheer happenstance both his character and his deceased father had the SAME NAME. Coupled with the themes of father/child bonding, our man basically went "fuck it, this is a sign, I'll do it."

Bryce Connor

Sooooo can you go back to the scooping goo off your bodies part?

Whitneybae

Sorry what was that about Pierce Brosnan being a feeder?

oranjest1

love a movie with the courage to wholeheartedly retcon stuff in the previous one. watched the sequel before the first one and was so fucking confused

oranjest1

have to say this is an all-timer of podcast movie reviews

anamoy

I love ABBA, but thought the first movie was almost unwatchable. Then I saw the trailer for this sequel and was like "I want to see this sooo bad, but I know better..."

Moray Macdonald

This one was hilarious! It also reminded me (via Colin Firth) of Kingsmen, which would surely be bonus material? Flawed Bond satire with more than a dash of Ideology.

Karis Ritenour

I thought I remembered that! But I don't remember it being super explicit, though, I thought they just said, like "He lives alone with two dogs *wink wink*" and then in one of the dance numbers he had a feather boa and I was like "can you not say "gay" in this ABBA MUSICAL?!?!" It's been approximately 100 years since I've seen it though, so maybe my memory is exaggerating.
